							<![CDATA[KOH S’DACH, Cambodia — Bristling with coral reefs, marine life and palm trees, the islands dotting Cambodia’s western and southwestern coasts have long lured tourists and investors alike with white sandy beaches sloping into the azure waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Beyond the postcard views, limited regulation and the availability of 99-year leases for fully foreign-owned companies have made these archipelagos a magnet for tourism magnates who, along with fugitives and government officials, have sought to cash in on the coast’s potential since the 2000s. Speculative island purchases ran rampant as Cambodia’s tourism industry grew, with islands bought up and sold on again throughout the 2010s. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, brought much of this to an abrupt halt. But as the pandemic’s grip on Cambodia loosened, Kay Samroum, chairman of the Koh Kong provincial council, announced on Feb. 4, 2022, that nine of the province’s 35 islands were slated for development. Details for the future of the province’s 237-kilometer (147-mile) coastline and its inhabitants are sparse. That same day, a deputy provincial governor, Sok Sothy, talked up the potential of the yet-to-be finished Dara Sakor international airport to serve Koh Kong’s tourism industry, although the airport’s Chinese developers have been mired in controversy. Then, on Feb. 6, Ouk Pheaktra, another of Koh Kong’s deputy provincial governors, took a delegation from the Council of the Development of Cambodia to a number of islands where investment licenses had already been issued and called on the licensees to expedite their projects. Now, a study of hummingbirds in Panama suggests that sporting male-like feathers helps some females avoid intense bullying, researchers recently reported in Current Biology. To find out why this surprising pattern arises, researchers studied the white-necked jacobin (Florisuga mellivora), a hummingbird native to Central and South America. Illustration by Jillian Ditner With a vibrant sapphire head, glistening green back, and bright white belly, the male white-necked jacobin looks like a jewel-encrusted figurine. The mildly tinted green-and-white female looks drab by comparison. However, discerning a male white-necked jacobin from a female is not so simple, said Jay J. Falk, who led the study at Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology in New York. Why? First, all juveniles of the species flaunt vibrant male coloring, no matter their sex. Second, up to 30 percent of the females retain their male feathers into adulthood, said Falk, who is now at the University of Washington in Seattle. An evolutionary explanation probably accounts for this rare violation of conventional avian plumage, researchers believe. Scientists have speculated that male ornamental mimicry among some female birds evolved for social reasons, rather than for sexual purposes. The four of us came together because we were frustrated by the lack of transparency in the perfume industry and sought to gather information and provide resources for consumers and other perfumers about how to make more responsible choices. They’re aiming for coastal estuaries, gateways to freshwater rivers where they will live for decades. When visibility becomes poor, eels can read an estuary’s unique magnetic map to navigate upstream. New research led by Alessandro Cresci, a Ph.D. candidate in biological oceanography at the University of Miami in Florida, is highlighting two key stages in the migration of European eels (Anguilla anguilla), an IUCN Critically Endangered species. “There’s a lot of work on how eels respond to patchy stimuli like light,” Cresci said of past research. “But we wanted to look into more stable navigational cues.” Glass eels are one phase in the complex life history of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Figure adapted from Cresci et al. (2019a). The first study, published in a recent issue of Communications Biology, describes eel navigation using magnetic fields in brackish waters. The second, published in Royal Society Open Science, identifies lunar cues that guide eels at sea. European eels begin as leaf-shaped larvae riding the Gulf Stream across the Atlantic Ocean, from the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda to the continental shelf off western Europe. Over the two-year crossing, they metamorphose into transparent glass eels just 7 centimeters (3 inches) long. Hundreds of millions arrive each year at coastlines from Scandinavia to Morocco. A patchwork of clues had led the researchers to the tree’s charred remnants in this small Guinean village of not more than a few dozen families. The tree had once been home to bats that locals would nab on occasion for a meal. It was also a spot where Emile Ouamouno might have been before he got sick. Emile, a toddler from Méliandou, is thought to be the first person to contract the illness in this outbreak. With little else to go on, scientists postulated that the origin of the virus that infected Emile might be the tree and its bats. The virologists told a reporter for Science that they couldn’t confirm if people from Méliandou had burned the tree to get rid of the bats that they feared might be carrying Ebola virus. But ecologist Merlin Tuttle has little doubt that was the case. To him, this type of persecution is part of the pattern set in motion when there’s a whisper that bats might be involved in a disease outbreak. 							<![CDATA[Trees from one of South America’s fastest-disappearing landscapes are ending up as charcoal on the shelves of European supermarkets, according to a report by the NGO Earthsight. The London-based watchdog group claims international grocery store chains in Spain and Germany – and ultimately, the restaurants and barbecue chefs who buy the charcoal – are connected to the unsustainable destruction of the dry tropical forests of the Gran Chaco in Paraguay. “The clearance of the Chaco forest is one of the largest and fastest losses of natural forest ever seen,” said Sam Lawson, who directs Earthsight, in a statement. “It is absolutely outrageous that major European supermarkets should have a hand in this.” A map using data from the University of Maryland and visualized on Global Forest Watch shows the extent of intact forest landscape and its loss on the IRASA lease location in the Gran Chaco from Sep 2011 to June 2016. Bricapar produces charcoal on the IRASA lease in Paraguay. In an investigation that spanned an entire year involving multiple forays into the Paraguayan Chaco, Earthsight reported on July 6 that, at current deforestation rates, 200,000 hectares could disappear from the Chaco’s forest this year – an area the size of Manhattan every two weeks. The cleared land will ultimately become cattle pasture, but in the meantime, charcoal “helps cover the up-front costs of clearing forest for cattle,” write the authors of the Earthsight report. So calm it’s eerie, in fact. No one is working on the grounds. There are no animals in the collection of holding pens and chutes. Despite a few spots of rust, the green paint shows none of the wear that would have come with housing cow-size animals. A silent generator sits in the corner, and the whole area is surrounded by heavy cable fencing that’s never been tested. On a side of the road sits a sign that reads, “THE DANUM VALLEY BORNEO RHINO SANCTUARY, DVBRS.” The text explains that I’m looking at the site of the breeding program for the Bornean rhinoceros, but a parenthetical below notes, “THERE IS NO RHINO IN CAPTIVITY AS YET.” In the three years since the center’s construction not far from the town of Lahad Datu, the Bornean subspecies (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni) of the Critically Endangered Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) has only grown more elusive. Most experts agreed in 2015 that the only ones still living in Malaysia were the three captive rhinos in an enclosure at Tabin Wildlife Reserve, east of the town of Lahad Datu. 							<![CDATA[SUKAU, Malaysia – At first blush, the muddy waters of the Kinabatangan River in northern Borneo seem to laze through a hodge-podge of sleepy fishing and farming villages. The river winds past oil palm plantations pushing right up to the river’s edge, crumbling (and striking) limestone cliffs, and abutting explosions of vegetation extending from carpets of hyacinth (Hyacinthus spp.) – introduced by a British colonist who liked the way they looked, according to local lore – to the twisting lianas and the tops of the tall trees standing guard on the river bank. But like most rainforests, the stillness along Malaysia’s second-longest river belies what is in fact a dynamic and ever-changing place. The Kinabatangan and the narrow wildlife sanctuary named for it, pinned to its banks by thousands of hectares of oil palm on all sides, have recently pulled the state of Sabah into the spotlight, as the opposition from local and international conservation groups to a planned bridge in the town of Sukau across the river has grown. The bridge was cancelled in mid-April, according to a speech by Sabah’s chief conservator of forests, Sam Mannan. But Saddi Abdul Rahman, Sukau’s representative to the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, hasn’t given up on the project yet, and said in a message to Mongabay that he will wait until he has official confirmation from the state’s chief minister. Take the blue-and-yellow macaw with its egg-yolk breast and turquoise back – “the usual gaudy colouring of the intertropical productions,” as Charles Darwin put it. But recent research in the journal Global Ecology and Biogeography contests the idea that wildlife and flowers in the tropics are more colorful than those in temperate climes. They may, in fact, be blander. People, including scientists, have a bias for “thinking that tropical regions are filled with really vibrant and exuberantly colorful things,” said lead author Rhiannon Dalrymple, who completed the study at the University of New South Wales in Australia. “But there&#8217;s never been any strong test of the idea.” To assess how colors change from one place to the next, researchers have relied on evaluating the hues of specimens by eye. But for the first time, Rhiannon and colleagues applied an objective lens: measuring color with instruments. The approach also allowed them to capture wavelengths of light, such as ultraviolet, that are invisible to people but apparent to bees, birds, and other animals. The researchers amassed species and subspecies of a wider breadth of flora and fauna than in any previous study about color: museum specimens of 424 kinds of butterflies and 570 kinds of birds, as well as 339 kinds of freshly collected flowers. Spanning 34.5 degrees of latitude in eastern Australia, the samples hailed from tropical rainforest to heathland. Butler Pitcher plants (Nepenthes species) have long captivated our fascination. Typically growing in acidic and nutrient-poor soils, they have developed the ability to eat insects and other small prey to supplement their diets. Nepenthes grow modified leaf structures which form a saucer cup with a slippery rim lined with visual or edible bait. When an insect approaches to investigate the reward, they slip off the rim and into the cup which is usually filled with a viscoelastic fluid. Unable to escape, the prey is slowly digested and absorbed by the plant. However, observers of the Nepenthes rafflesiana, found in Borneo, discovered that the effectiveness of some traps is dependent on the weather. Dubbed Rainforest: Live, the initiative hopes to raise awareness of quickly vanishing ecosystems and species. &#8220;So often coverage of rainforests focuses on the threats to jungles and wildlife. Amid stories about palm oil, deforestation, logging and poaching, it&#8217;s easy to forget the beauty and wonders of these forests,&#8221; said Matt Williams, Communications Manager for the Orangutan Tropical Peatland Project, which is spearheading the project. &#8220;If people in Southeast Asia and across the world are reminded of this incredible natural gift, then we have a better chance of saving tropical rainforests everywhere.&#8221; No-where in the world are rainforests falling faster than in Southeast Asia. According to the Global Forest Watch, Malaysia has the world&#8217;s highest deforestation rate from 2000-2012, having lost over 14 percent of its forest during a dozen years. Indonesia is third, wand Cambodia comes in fifth. Moreover in 2010, Conservation International rated the forests of mainland Southeast Asia (the Indo-Burma region) as the world&#8217;s most imperiled. Not yet 30, Paul Rosolie has already lived a life that most would only dare dream of&#8212;or have nightmares over, depending on one&#8217;s constitution. With the Western Amazon as his panorama, Rosolie has faced off jaguars, wrestled anacondas, explored a floating forest, mentored with indigenous people, been stricken by tropical disease, traveled with poachers, and hand-reared a baby anteater. It&#8217;s no wonder that at the ripe age of 26, Rosolie has already written a memoir: Mother of God: An Extraordinary Journey into the Uncharted Tributaries of the Western Amazon. It&#8217;s an exuberant, brash, and thrilling adventure story, and already garnered praise from the Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, while being selected in the Barnes and Noble 2014 Discover Great New Writers series. But what sets Rosolie&#8217;s book a part from other young adventurers, is that he&#8217;s not simply seeking thrills and regurgitating them to arm-chair enthusiasts. The West African rubber frog (Phrynomantis microps) hides in the humid nests to survive the long dry season of southern and central Africa. However, the ant colonies are armed with highly aggressive ant militias that fight off intruders with powerful, venomous jaws. So how do these frogs escape attack? A study recently published in PLOS ONE found that the rubber frog excretes chemicals that camouflage it from the ants. Ants detect threats by &#8220;smelling&#8221; them with their antennae, but the frog&#8217;s unique perfume makes it invisible to the ants, allowing it to slip between their defenses undetected. Flying snakes achieve surprising amounts of lift through the shape of their bodies, report researchers from Virginia Tech in a paper recently published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. The study examined how paradise tree snakes—one of five species of so-called flying snake found in Southeast Asia—shape their bodies to achieve the lift that allows them to glide up to 30 meters between trees. During flight, the authors write, the snake flexes its ribs and, &#8220;morphs its circular cross-section into a triangular shape by splaying its ribs and flattening its body.&#8221; The resultant cross-section resembles a wide triangle with its upper vertex rounded and lower edge slightly concave. The researchers determined the shape by examining images of snakes in flight, and used a 3D printer to create a model cross-section of the body. They then studied the lift and drag of the snake at various angles of attack by recording the movement of microscopic reflective beads suspended in water as they flowed around the model. The authors were surprised to discover that the body of the paradise tree snake in flight out-performs airfoils and other similarly shaped objects tested under the same conditions. When tilted to a 35 degree angle, the snake achieved an usually high and unexpected spike in lift, while at 0 degrees, the shape provides negative lift and pulls the snake down. Conducting aquarium-based experiments and a series of reef dives using high-intensity blue lighting, the researchers led by scientists from the American Museum of Natural History identified more than 180 species of biofluorescent fishes across 50 fish families. &#8220;By designing scientific lighting that mimics the ocean’s light along with cameras that can capture the animals’ fluorescent light, we can now catch a glimpse of this hidden biofluorescent universe,&#8221; said co-lead author David Gruber, an associate professor of biology at Baruch College and a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History (AMHN), in a statement. &#8220;Many shallow reef inhabitants and fish have the capabilities to detect fluorescent light and may be using biofluorescence in similar fashions to how animals use bioluminescence, such as to find mates and to camouflage.&#8221; Glowing surgeonfish (Acanthurus coeruleus, larval). © PLOS ONE. Wolves have been known to dig into bear dens and snag a cub. But after gray wolves returned to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, grizzly bears ate more berries in the summer for a pre-hibernation nutritional boost, researchers reported Sept. 4 in the Journal of Animal Ecology. The wolves help grizzlies indirectly by preying on elk. Elk graze on shrubs such as serviceberry, so with fewer elk, plants have rebounded via a two-step process known as a trophic cascade. A team led by ecologist William Ripple of Oregon State University showed that hungry grizzlies feasted heartily on the berry bonanza. By examining grizzly feces, known as scat, the scientists discovered grizzlies ate significantly more fruit a decade after wolves returned than they had before, as much as 20 times more in July and twice as much in August. They also considered the size of the elk population in their research area, about 60 kilometers north of Yellowstone landmarks like the Old Faithful geyser. Although unlikely to pass anytime in the near term, recurring legislation that would hand over 80,000 acres of the Tongass Rainforest to a Native-owned logging corporation has put local communities on guard in Southeast Alaska. &#8220;The legislation privatizes a public resource. It takes land that belongs to all of us, and that all of us have a say in the use and management of, and it gives that land to a private for-profit corporation,&#8221; Andrew Thoms, Executive Director of the Sitka Conservation Society, told mongabay.com in a recent interview. &#8220;Most of the land has been selected for its timber, and we can expect some of the largest and oldest trees on the forests to be clear-cut. Other parcels were selected for non-timber commercial value or for cultural and historic value, and these parcels have created a lot of heartburn in communities in Southeast Alaska because the parcels include places people depend upon for hunting and subsistence or recreation or are major access points, and again they will be going to a private corporation.&#8221; The legislation, known formally as S 730 and HR 1408, has been written to allow Sealaksa to select logging areas outside of long-designated areas, allowing the company to pick-and-choose some of the last stands of old-growth forest. Photo by: T.J. Watt. A picture is worth a thousand words: this common adage comes instantly to mind when viewing T.J. Watt&#8217;s unforgettable photos of lost trees. For years, Watt has been photographing the beauty of Vancouver Island&#8217;s ancient temperate rainforests, and documenting their loss to clearcut logging. The photographer and environmental activist recently helped co-found the Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA), a group devoted to saving the island&#8217;s and British Columbia&#8217;s (BC) last old-growth while working with the logging industry to adopt sustainable practices. This February the organization succeeded in saving Avatar Grove&#8212;which was only discovered in 2009&#8212;from being clearcut. Abandoned by NGOs and the World Bank, carved out for rubber plantations and mining by the Cambodian government, spiraling into a chaos of poaching and illegal logging, and full of endangered species and never-explored places, Virachey National Park may be the world&#8217;s greatest park that has been written off by the international community. But a new book by explorer and PhD student, Greg McCann, hopes to change that. Several years ago while teaching a course in environmental science a student raised her hand during our discussion of the circumstances of modern ecological collapse and posed the question, &#8220;what happens when there is no more environment?&#8221; At the time I had no response and stumbled to formulate some sort of reply based on the typical aseptic, apathetic logic with which we are programmed through education in the scientific tradition: that there will always be some sort of environment, that life has prospered through the five previous mass extinctions and that something will survive. While this may be the case, the time has come for more of us to consider the broader spectrum of what global humanity is facing as the planet’s ecology is decimated. It seems that before the environment is completely obliterated people who love life will conspire to preserve and restore biodiversity. They will do everything in their power to fight for whatever is left of the natural world, regardless of the difficult and disturbing nature of the challenges they face. I recently had the opportunity to discuss environmental collapse with one such unrelenting conservation scientist and educator. For foreign travelers, Turkey is a nation of cultural, religious, and historic wonders: a place where cultures have met, clashed, and co-created. However, Turkey has another wealth that is far less known: biodiversity. Of the globe&#8217;s 34 biodiversity hotspots, Turkey is almost entirely covered by three: the Caucasus, the Irano-Anatolian, and the Mediterranean. Despite its wild wealth, conservation is not a priority in Turkey and recent papers in Science and Biological Conservation warn that the current development plans in the country, which rarely take the environment into account, are imperiling its species and ecosystems. &#8220;The current &#8216;developmentalist obsession,&#8217; particularly regarding water use, threatens to eliminate much of what remains, while forcing large-scale migration from rural areas to the cities. According to current plans, Turkey&#8217;s rivers and streams will be dammed with almost 4,000 dams, diversions, and hydroelectric power plants for power, irrigation, and drinking water by 2023,&#8221; the authors write, adding that other threats include urbanization, wetland-draining, and poaching. The Ramsar Treaty was an international agreement meant to address the loss and degradation of wetlands worldwide. Wetlands provide a multitude of ecosystem services to humanity including safeguarding unique biodiversity, buffering against flooding, acting as fish nurseries, purifying water, replenishing soil with moisture, and storing carbon among others. Despite their importance wetlands face an abundance of threats including conversion for agriculture or livestock, draining for development, pollution and sewage, rising sea levels due to climate change, invasive species, and efforts to control wetlands with dams and dikes. Surveying a little-explored park in the Peruvian Amazon has paid off in dividends: researchers with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) have cataloged 365 species that had never been recorded in Bahuaja Sonene National Park. The species new to the park included two bats, thirty birds, and over two hundred butterflies and moths. This was the first time the park had ever been so extensively surveyed. &#8220;The discovery of even more species in this park underscores the importance of ongoing conservation work in this region,&#8221; Julie Kunen, WCS Director of Latin America and Caribbean Programs, said in a press release. &#8220;This park is truly one of the crown jewels of Latin America’s impressive network of protected areas.&#8221; Created in 1996, the park is located in the Madre de Dios department in south-eastern Peru and covers over 252,000 hectares. It is now known that Bahuaja Sonene National Park is home to over 600 bird species, 180 mammals, 50 herps (reptiles and amphibians), 180 fish, and 1,300 species of butterfly. 							<![CDATA[Tree shrews and nocturnal rats in the forests of Borneo have a unique relationship with carnivorous pitcher plants. The mammals defecate, and the pitchers are happy to receive. A study published on May 31 in the Journal of Tropical Ecology shows a species of giant mountain pitcher plants (Nepenthes rajah) supplements its diet with nitrogen from the feces of tree shrews (Tupaia montana) that forage in daylight and summit rats (Rattus baluensis) active at night. When the small mammals lick nectar from the underside of the pitcher’s lid, they stand directly over the jug-shaped pitcher organ. The pitchers grow in nutrient-poor, acidic soils and require a supplemental source of nitrogen. Carnivorous plants usually digest bugs, grabbing nitrogen from protein. The Bornean pitchers consume nitrogen-rich feces. A summit rat, Rattus baluensis, licking the lid of a Nepenthes rajah pitcher. A third species provides daytime roosts for Hardwicke’s woolly bats in exchange for guano. Fittingly, the winner of the 2011 Veolia Wildlife Environment Photographer of the Year award captured the shock of last year&#8217;s BP Deepwater Horizon spill in the US with a single image of oiled pelicans huddled in a rescue center. Spanish photographer, Daniel Beltra, was documenting the environmental impacts of the spill with Greenpeace, for whom he has worked for 15 years. The photo was taken in a temporary rescue facility in Fort Jackson, Louisiana. &#8220;The sheer simplicity of this powerful image makes it really beautiful and shocking at the same time,&#8221; said the Chair of the judging panel, Mark Carwardine. Beltra&#8217;s image was chosen over tens-of-thousands of entries. &#8220;Today’s news of Daniel’s compelling, groundbreaking award marks the first time that the internationally prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year’s winning picture shifts from pictorial to journalistic,&#8221; John Novis, Head of Photography at Greenpeace International, wrote in a blog today. &#8220;It signifies that it’s time to take a completely new look at the environment, not just as nature as something beautiful, but also as nature in crisis.&#8221; Other winners included Mateusz Piesiak, 14, from Poland, who won the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year award for a photo of two oystercatchers in Long Island, New York. With wild waters and shores, the Patagonia Sea is home to a great menagerie of marine animals: from penguins to elephants seals, albatrosses to squid, and sea lions to southern right whales. The sea lies at crossroads between more northern latitudes and the cold bitter water of the Southern Ocean, which surround Antarctica. However the region is also a heavy fishing ground, putting pressure on a number of species and imperiling the very ecosystem that supplies the industry. Conservation efforts, spearheaded by marine conservationist Claudio Campagna and colleagues with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), are in the early stages. Campagna, who often writes about the importance of language in the fight for preservation, has pushed to rename the area to focus on its stunning wildlife. &#8220;We invented the term &#8216;Patagonian sea&#8217; in an attempt to shift the focus of attention towards the diversity of marine species: the wildlife spectacles in and around the sea,&#8221; explains Campagna in a mongabay.com interview. &#8220;The geographic name given to this ocean is the South West Atlantic, but the Argentines like to call it the Argentine Sea. Not far from where the great Amazon River drains into the Atlantic, it splits off into a wide tributary, at first a fat vertical lake that, when viewed from satellite, eventually slims down to a wild scrawl through the dark green of the Amazon. In all, this tributary races almost completely southward through the Brazilian Amazon for 1,230 miles (1,979 kilometers)—nearly as long as the Colorado River—until it peters out in the savannah of Mato Grosso. Called home by diverse indigenous tribes and unique species, this is the Xingu River. &#8220;The Xingu River is a symbol of Brazil&#8217;s cultural diversity and biological heritage. The river and its forests sustain the livelihoods of over 25,000 indigenous people from 18 ethnic groups, riverbank populations and innumerable species of plants and animals,&#8221; Christian Poirier, the Brazil Program Coordinator with Amazon Watch, told mongabay.com. A Contested Vision The Nantu Wildlife Reserve is located in northern Sulawesi’s Minehasa Peninsula, in Gorontalo Province. Sulawesi is among the largest of Indonesia’s some seventeen thousand islands. Its shape is bizarre: a sinuous sprawling monkey, with lavish tail, poised to leap the straits of Makassar. Sulawesi lies to the north of Bali and Lombok and to the east of Borneo. Alfred Russell Wallace, the nineteenth century English explorer and natural scientist of broad expertise, spent a lot of time in Sulawesi’s northern peninsula, casting his curiosity and observation with such singular acuity that his mind apprehended “Darwin’s theory of evolution” independently from and possibly before Darwin. His work described the zone of transition between the Asian and Australian zoographic regions and was so accurate and thorough in its logic that today, some one-hundred and fifty years later, the zone is named Wallacea. She has worked twenty-two years to form and protect the wildlife reserve. At the same time, she has become the world’s foremost expert on the rare and idiosyncratic babirusa pig. Nantu is a wonderland of biodiversity and endemism. The babirusa, for example, occurs only in northern Sulawesi and Nantu is its largest remaining undisturbed range. There is no question that Earth has been a giving planet. Everything humans have needed to survive, and thrive, was provided by the natural world around us: food, water, medicine, materials for shelter, and even natural cycles such as climate and nutrients. Scientists have come to term such gifts &#8216;ecosystem services&#8217;, however the recognition of such services goes back thousands of years, and perhaps even farther if one accepts the caves paintings at Lascaux as evidence. Yet we have so disconnected ourselves from the natural world that it is easy—and often convenient—to forget that nature remains as giving as ever, even as it vanishes bit-by-bit. The rise of technology and industry may have distanced us superficially from nature, but it has not changed our reliance on the natural world: most of what we use and consume on a daily basis remains the product of multitudes of interactions within nature, and many of those interactions are imperiled. Beyond such physical goods, the natural world provides less tangible, but just as important, gifts in terms of beauty, art, and spirituality. Earth Day seems as good a day as any to remind ourselves what nature gives us free-of-charge. Here then is a selective sampling of nature&#8217;s importance to our lives: Tad lo waterfall in Laos. This is a question making the rounds in conservation and environmental circles. Why is a nation that has so much invested in its wild lands and wild animals willing to pursue projects that appear destined not only to wreak havoc on the East African nation&#8217;s world-famous wildlife and ecosystems, but to cripple its economically-important tourism industry? The most well known example is the proposed road bisecting Serengeti National Park, which scientists, conservationists, the UN, and foreign governments alike have condemned. But there are other concerns among conservationists, including the fast-tracking of soda ash mining in East Africa&#8217;s most important breeding ground for millions of lesser flamingo, and the recent announcement to nullify an application for UNESCO Heritage Status for a portion of Tanzania&#8217;s Eastern Arc Mountains, a threatened forest rich in species found no-where else. According to President Jakaya Kikwete, Tanzania is simply trying to provide for its poorest citizens (such as communities near the Serengeti and the Eastern Arc Mountains) while pursuing western-style industrial development. &#8220;We have to develop to an industrialized country and to get there we should think through, plan and put strategies in place. One of the major tenets behind the creation of a national park, or other protected area, is that it will not fade, but remain in essence beyond the pressures of human society, enjoyed by current generations while being preserved for future ones. The protected area is a gift, in a way, handed from one wise generation to the next. However, in the real world, dominated by short-term thinking, government protected areas are not &#8216;inalienable&#8217;, as Abraham Lincoln dubbed one of the first; but face being shrunk, losing legal protection, or in some cases abolished altogether. A first of its kind study, published in Conservation Letters, recorded 89 instances in 27 countries of protected areas being downsized (shrunk), downgraded (decrease in legal protections), and degazetted (abolished) since 1900. Referred to by the authors as PADDD (protected areas downgraded, downsized, or degazetted), the trend has been little studied despite its large impact on conservation efforts. &#8220;People have been aware of these events since the dawn of the international conservation movement. Because most conservation research and action is at the local or regional level, however, those of us in the conservation community recognized—and addressed—individual PADDD events but not the larger phenomenon of downgrading, downsizing, and degazettement,&#8221; co-author Mike Mascia. a senior social scientist at World Wildlife Fund (WWF), told mongabay.com.
