That landslide of mining waste, or tailings as it’s known in the industry, occurred on Feb. 18 at a storage area in Morowali industrial area in Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province, a key hub of the country’s nickel industry. The facility was operated by PT QMB, a tenant of the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), and the incident left an excavator operator dead. Steven Emerman, a hydrogeologist and mining waste expert who reviewed the videos, concluded that they showed the phenomenon of liquefaction — a failure in which partially dried mining waste suddenly behaves like a liquid. “The video clearly shows liquefaction of a filtered tailings stack,” he told Mongabay. Filtered, or “dry stack” tailings are widely promoted as a safer alternative for storing mining waste than the wet sludge held behind conventional tailings dams. The material is filtered to remove its water content and stacked on land as a damp, soil-like mass. But a new report by U.S.-based environmental NGO Earthworks that Emerman contributed to raises concerns about how the technology is being applied in Indonesia. It says some facilities are being built “taller and contain more waste than they can safely hold,” and cites problems with design, drainage and quality control. In its Aug. 12 ruling, the court upheld a lower court’s earlier decision that the environmental permit should never have been issued in the first place in light of experts’ warnings of potentially disastrous fallout due to the project’s location on an active tectonic fault. “Now the Supreme Court has made it clear: further development of this mine is unlawful,” Mangatur Lumbantoruan, a resident of the village of Sumbari in Dairi district, North Sumatra province, said in response to the ruling. “The mine is dangerous. Government and financiers should withdraw their support.” Residents of Sumbari and other villages sitting within the project’s zone of influence have for years petitioned against the development of the mine. The central object of their criticism is the planned dam to hold mining waste, or tailings. An independent analysis by experts identified extreme risks of the dam collapsing because it would sit in one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Data from news portal Volcano Discovery show there are about 41 earthquakes on average per year in or near Dairi. So far this year alone, Dairi has experienced 27 quakes of magnitudes above 2, and up to 4.7. 							<![CDATA[Kalpitiya, SRI LANKA: The Feb. 11 beaching of 14 pilot whales in Kalpitiya, about 172 kilometers (107 miles) from the capital, Colombo, may have occurred due to the recent seismic activity in the Indian Ocean, marine experts say. The whales beached on Sri Lanka’s northwestern Kudawa beach in Kandakuliya, Kalpitiya, prompting 15 and a half hours of strenuous efforts from authorities to send the mammals back into sea. “We launched efforts to send these whales back into the sea at around 4 a.m. after we received a tipoff from a fisherman,” Upali Kumarathunga, the wildlife ranger who was in charge of the rescue operation, told Mongabay. “It was challenging for us because the whales kept coming back to the shore even though we kept pushing them back into the waters.” Kumarathunga noted that about 25 personnel from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Coast Guard and other volunteers had participated in the operation that came to a close around 7:30 p.m. Colombo time. While the rescuers managed to send 11 whales safely back into the sea, three had died. “After completing a postmortem examination on the dead whales, we will report findings to the court and bury the carcasses. After her son returned from working in the Middle East, they built her a new home near the Melamchi River, in Sindhupalchowk’s Melamchi municipality. But following massive flooding in the area in June last year, Tamang says she fears losing her home once again. “Landslides and floods threaten to wipe away the new house as well,” she says. 							<![CDATA[PENYARINGAN, Indonesia — Stretching across Bali’s southwest coast and up into the mountainous hinterland is Jembrana, one of the least populated of the Indonesian island’s nine administrative districts. Its name originates from jimbarwana, a Balinese word for vast and dense forest, and unlike the southern tourism centers, its primary economic sectors are agriculture, forestry and fisheries, followed by transportation and warehousing. Skirting Jembrana’s southern edge is a 70-kilometer (43-mile) stretch of Bali’s busiest road, the Denpasar-Gilimanuk highway, which connects Bali to the neighboring island of Java by ferry. Covering a long and narrow central section of Jembrana is the village of Penyaringan. Known for its thick forest, it was once home to abundant wild boar, birdlife and other animals that provided ample game for residents. With its history of hunting, it is believed the village takes its name from the word jaring, meaning “net.” After heavy rains in late September, however, Penyaringan was one of several locations to be devastated by flash floods and landslides. Sumerti, a young resident of the village, said that although it rained heavily for only a few hours, the flooding was severe enough to damage the back wall of her house. A sibling also had losses to bear: the 2,000 seedlings of porang (Amorphophallus muelleri), a tuber crop they had just planted, were all washed away. The Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam), an Indonesian NGO, says 104 mining concessions, covering a combined area of 1.6 million hectares (3.9 million acres) — half the size of Belgium — are vulnerable to earthquakes. Forty-nine of these concessions are located on the island of Sumatra, with 23 on Sulawesi and 21 in the Malukus. Most are opposed by communities living in those areas. “These mines aren’t operating in vacant space,” said Jatam legal researcher Muhammad Jamil. “The majority of them are operating in disaster areas.” Jatam data from 2019 show the government has issued at least 783 mining licenses in disaster-prone areas. Before the quake, Iksam, an archaeologist at the province-run Central Sulawesi Museum here in this eastern Indonesian city, would often dive in Palu’s narrow, horseshoe-like bay. He had little company; only one dive resort brought customers to the reefs here, though a tour guide Iksam knew at the better-known Bunaken dive site in neighboring North Sulawesi province had also planned to take a group to Palu’s reefs. The coral also supported the fish that helped sustain the economy in this region of nearly 1 million people. Then the Palu-Koro fault shook. More than 4,400 people died in last September’s magnitude-7.5 earthquake that simultaneously triggered tsunamis, landslides and nightmarish liquefaction, where moist soil turns into quicksand, swallowing up houses, cars and people. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced, and the government estimates rebuilding will cost $2.6 billion. Several thousand people in fishing families lost not only their homes to the tsunami, but also the boats and equipment on which their livelihoods depended. Now, it seems they’ve lost a critical link in their food chain. Like thousands of others, Jumayar’s house fell early on Aug. 5, as the second of four large earthquakes in the span of three weeks ripped through the Indonesian island of Lombok, clobbering his village of Beleq in the process. Registering a magnitude 7.0, the Aug. 5 quake was the most powerful of the four. It injured thousands of people, left 350,000 homeless, and killed 460, most of them crushed in the ruins of their homes. Although Lombok, which is next to Bali, sits squarely on the quake-prone Ring of Fire, heavy, concrete homebuilding is the norm. These rigid structures became death traps during the earthquakes. Only the handful of wooden traditional houses in Beleq, with their lightweight, flexible designs, emerged unscathed. Ancient wisdom The customary homes in Beleq draw on the centuries-old traditions of the Sasak people, who make up most of the population of Lombok. Though elements like floor height or wall width may vary in different parts of the island, all traditional Sasak homes employ the same basic design: Thatched bamboo walls enclose dirt floors, connecting them to roofs of woven reeds. In fact, many social and ecological processes and current events will likely undermine the project’s success. The plan involves excavating and dredging a 275-kilometer (171-mile) swath and constructing a canal with locks from the Atlantic Ocean across the Cerro Silva and Punta Gorda Nature Reserves, through Lake Nicaragua, and westward to the Pacific Ocean. Scientists and project proponents agree that the feasibility of the venture rests, in part, on water quality and quantity flowing into Lake Nicaragua and the future canal. Additionally, both acknowledge that seismic activity in the region could pose dangers to the integrity of the design’s infrastructure. HKND, the Hong Kong-based firm with the concession to develop the canal, has sought to quell concerns about the plan’s feasibility, but scientists remain skeptical. Indeed, their suspicions seem to be well-founded, judging by current conditions and recent events. Drought, declining water levels, expanding deforestation, rising sedimentation, and frequent seismic events do not bode well for an undertaking that requires stable ecological and geological conditions. Minimal water depth required for the canal to allow the transit of 400,000-ton ships through Lake Nicaragua, as envisioned by the developers of the proposal, is 30.2 meters (about 100 feet) above sea level. By 24 hours before the quake they had completely vacated the area. A recent study documenting the animals&#8217; retreat with camera-trap data suggests that animals may have an uncanny ability to sense and flee from irritating portents of seismic activity. Historically, scientists have dismissed accounts of animals acting strangely before earthquakes, mostly due to the anecdotal nature of the accounts and a lack of reliable sources. “[T]he infrequency and unpredictability of earthquakes means that most relevant pre-earthquake studies suffer, of necessity, from small sample sizes and from difficulties with reproducibility under comparable conditions,” states the recent study, published in the journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth. However, a few credible observations of odd animal behavior do exist. For instance, before a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy, in 2009, researchers detected unusual toad behavior in areas where they also detected atmospheric disturbances that typically occur before earthquakes. Disasters risk undermining recent economic gains in the region. Cyclones, severe storms, earthquakes, and other disasters kill thousands and cost billions of dollars every year. Climate change is worsening the impacts, especially in low level areas prone to flooding. &#8220;The region has borne the brunt of the physical and economic damage of the sharp rise in natural disasters since the 1980s,&#8221; said the Asian Development Bank in a statement. &#8220;Its people are four times more likely to be affected by natural disasters than in Africa, and 25 times more likely than in Europe or North America.&#8221; The report says that natural disasters killed more than 650,000 people in the region between 2000 and 2009. It adds that 152 million people are currently considered vulnerable to natural disasters, partly a product of urban population growth and expansion into areas not suitable for habitation. The report recommends increased spending on urban planning and boosting defenses instead of the more costly approach of repairing damaged infrastructure in the aftermath of a natural disaster. With oceanographers at Columbia University&#8217;s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Google Earth has fine-tuned its oceans&#8217; resolution in selected areas from 1 kilometer to just 100 meters. &#8220;In spite of the importance of the oceans for life on earth, the landscape beneath the sea is hidden in darkness and poorly mapped,&#8221; says oceanographer William Ryan from Lamont-Doherty in a press release. &#8220;While we can map the surface of planets from spacecraft in a single mission, to obtain comparable detail of the hidden seascape requires visiting every spot with a ship.&#8221; Our general ignorance about the world&#8217;s oceans has led to the common, and accurate, quip that we know about the moon&#8217;s surface than we do our own oceans. Google Earth, however, is working to keep up with the latest data from oceanographers, including nearly 500 cruises covering 3 million miles over the last 20 years. Such expeditions are about much more than simple exploration; mapping the seafloor helps researchers better understand marine ecosystems, and provides better insights into earthquake and tsunami zones, perhaps in the future saving lives. Japan usually imports plywood from China, Malaysia, and Indonesia, however the forests of Southeast Asia are facing tremendous loss due to logging and clearing for industrial-scale agriculture, such as palm oil. According to a press release from Wood Resources International LLC, the Japanese government has already requested 30,000 prefab temporary houses for disaster victims over the next two months. Demand for imports is expected to increase once infrastructure has been repaired and power restored. &#8220;Over the next 6-12 month, it can be expected that there will be a rise in demand for both lumber and plywood. This will result in increased importation of processed products and of logs to supply domestic Japanese mills,&#8221; reads the press release from Wood Resources International LLC. A recent article from the Borneo Post largely agreed. “One timber player rules out a &#8217;30-40 per cent jump in exports&#8217; to Japan – which mostly buys plywood from Malaysia – but expects a probable steady rise in demand from Japan to help in the reconstruction process, depending on the extent of the damage to buildings,” AmResearch, an investment research firm based in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, told the Borneo Post. The images reveal large-scale devastation of coastal areas in the Sendai region of Japan. &#8220;Today, we’ve published imagery of the Sendai region at even higher resolution, which we collected on Sunday and Monday,&#8221; wrote Keiichi Kawai, Senior Product Manager, on the official Google Blog. &#8220;The new Sendai imagery, along with satellite imagery from throughout the area, is now live in the base imagery layer of Google Earth and will soon be visible in Google Maps.&#8221; Google says it will continue acquiring updated images and posting them on Google Earth to facilitate post-tsunami recovery efforts. &#8220;We hope our effort to deliver up-to-date imagery provides the relief organizations and volunteers working around the clock with the data they need to better understand the current conditions on the ground,&#8221; continued Kawai. &#8220;We also hope these tools help our millions of users—both those in Japan and those closely watching and sending their support from all over the globe—to find useful information about the affected areas.&#8221; The 9.0 earthquake and subsequent earthquake killed more than 10,000 people. Analysis of global positioning system data at the Geospatial Information Authority in Tsukuba found the 9.0-magnitude quake moved the peninsula 5.3 meters (17 feet) and dropped it by 1.2 meters (3.9 ft). The displacement was the largest on record for Japan, according to the agency. The quake also shifted other points of Japan, including Tokyo, although the movements were smaller. The earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami that killed thousands along the eastern coast of Japan. The tsunami also crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Google says it is providing the high-resolution imagery to emergency crews and organizations working on the ground &#8220;We&#8217;re working to provide this data directly to response organizations on the ground to aid their efforts,&#8221; wrote Ryan Falor, of the Google Crisis Response team, on the official Google Blog. &#8220;We hope this new updated satellite imagery is valuable for them as well as everyone else following this situation to help illustrate the extent of the damage.&#8221; The March 11 earthquake that triggered the tsunami was recently upgraded to a 9.0, the strongest quake to hit Japan in modern times. It was the fifth strongest quake since record-keeping began in the late nineteenth century. The tsunami struck the eastern coast of Honshu island, moving it nearly 8 feet east. It caused heavy damage to infrastructure, including nuclear reactors, three of which partly melted down. More than 10,000 are feared dead. AmResearch, an investment research firm based in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, said logging companies that export plywood to Japan are poised to benefit from reconstruction. “We have contacted timber players, who are also unsure of the extent of damage stemming from the latest earthquake and the aftershocks,” AmResearch is quoted as saying. “One timber player rules out a &#8217;30-40 per cent jump in exports&#8217; to Japan – which mostly buys plywood from Malaysia – but expects a probable steady rise in demand from Japan to help in the reconstruction process, depending on the extent of the damage to buildings.” AmResearch told the Borneo Post Japan accounted for 46 percent of Sarawak&#8217;s total wood panel exports by volume from Jan 2010-Nov 2010. Hardwood prices have risen 19 percent over the past year. Ta Ann Holdings Bhd, one of the timber companies covered by AmResearch and one of the largest forestry firms operation in Sarawak, a state in Malaysian Borneo, exports 90 percent of its plywood production to Japan, according to AmResearch. Ta Ann has recently been criticized by environmental activists for its links to Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is the center of a corruption scandal. 							<![CDATA[Erosion caused by hurricanes and large-scale deforestation may have contributed to last year&#8217;s devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people in Haiti, according to a geologist at the University of Miami. Analyzing stresses in Earth&#8217;s crust in the fault zone of last year&#8217;s January 12 quake, Shimon Wdowinski and colleagues suggest that redistribution of sediment from mountaintops to the lowland Leogane River Delta in the aftermath of four major tropical storms &#8212; including two hurricanes &#8212; in 2008 could have been enough to trigger the catastrophic shock. Near-complete deforestation of hillsides worsened erosion from the storms. Jeff Masters of Weather Underground&#8217;s WunderBlog summarizes the research, which was presented in December at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in San Francisco: Wdowinsky computed that the amount of mass eroded away from the mountains over the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake was sufficient to cause crustal strains capable of causing a vertically-oriented slippage along a previously unknown fault. This type of motion is quite unusual in this region, as most quakes in Haiti tend to be of the strike-slip variety, where the tectonic plates slide horizontally past each other. The fact that the 2010 Haiti quake occurred along a vertically moving fault lends support to the idea that the slippage was triggered due to mass stripped off the mountains by erosion over the epicenter, combined with the extra weight of the extra sediment deposited in the Leogane Delta clamping down on the northern portion of the fault. As it has done in previous catastrophes, Google worked with its satellite imagery providers &#8212; in this case DigitalGlobe &#8212; to provide the updated imagery less than 48 hours after the disaster occurred. The images show before-and-after scenes of neighborhoods and the national palace as well as open areas which have become make-shift refugee camps. Google also announced a $1 million donation to organizations working on the ground in Haiti. On the Official Google Blog, the search giant highlighted several groups including Direct Relief, Yele Haiti, Partners in Health, Red Cross, World Food Program, Mercy Corps, Save the Children, Lambi Fund, Doctors Without Borders, and The International Rescue Committee. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck on at 4:53 pm on Tuesday, January 12th. It was centered about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Port-au-Prince. The quake is thought to have killed tens of thousands of people in the Western Hemisphere&#8217;s poorest country. The quake also devastated a subpopulation of riparian frogs, Rana swinhoana, which had been under scientific study for three years prior. This devastation allowed scientists the opportunity to study the population changes in a species affected suddenly and irretrievably by natural disaster. Dr. Yeong-Choy Kam, one of the studies&#8217; authors, concluded that &#8220;the most valuable part of this work is that we have provided a piece of data on effects of natural disturbance on frogs that will probably not available again.&#8221; The IUCN lists Rana swinhoana as Least Concern, yet due to habitat loss and deforestation in Taiwan, the frog&#8217;s populations have become fragmented. The epicenter was located 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Bengkulu, Sumatra and 620 km (385 miles) west-northwest of Jakarta at a depth of 30 km (18.6 miles). The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks &#8212; the strongest of which registered at a magnitude of 6.6. A 3-foot tsunami was recorded in Padang, on the island of Sumatra, several hundred miles northeast of the epicenter, according to Suhardjono, an official with Indonesia&#8217;s meteorological agency, reports the Associated Press. Initial reports suggest seven people were killed and more than 200 were injured. In December 2004, a quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people, including 160,000 people in Indonesia&#8217;s province of Aceh. That quake was nearly 10 times as powerful as Wednesday&#8217;s quake. The city of Yogyakarta was hit by a powerful quake that killed more than 5,700 just over a year ago. Both quakes caused widespread panic and triggered tsunami warnings for Indonesian and other Indian Ocean nations devastated by the December 26, 2004 tsunami that killed 230,000 people. The tsunami caused minimal damage but at least three people were killed by collapsed buildings and fires from the earthquake. A further seven people were killed in Bengkulu according to the Social Affairs Department. The earthquake was felt widely in the region, causing skyscrapers to sway in Jakarta, Singapore, and Malaysia. Using more computer modeling, improved seismograms and new imaging techniques, Das showed that rupture rates during a 2001 earthquake in Tibet may have been as fast as 6 kilometers per second along some straight portions of the strike-slip fault &#8212; more than twice the conventionally held &#8220;speed limit&#8221; for quakes.
