Large companies trading in timber and other wood products meet just one quarter, on average, of the 22 best practice indicators for deforestation and biodiversity, according to the latest report published by the Sustainability Policy Transparency Toolkit (SPOTT) — a corporate transparency initiative launched in 2014 by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). SPOTT publishes annual assessments for the 100 most significant companies trading in a particular forest commodity, such as timber, rubber, and palm oil. Each company’s policies are scored according to 175 environmental, social, and governance indicators, making the report “the first step in a robust due diligence process for anyone sourcing tropical timber or palm oil to have a clear idea of which companies have a good commitment in place,” said Charlie Hammans, Forestry Technical Advisor at SPOTT. Companies assessed in the 2020 Timber and Pulp Assessment received an average score across all indicators of 22.6% — up 2.2% from 2019, despite more stringent criteria this year. Companies met an average of just 26.7% of indicators in the deforestation and biodiversity category, but one criterion — commitment to zero conversion of natural forests — was achieved by 56% of firms. Personally, I am enchanted by the flutter of leathery wings at dusk. But bats’ nocturnal habits and sometimes bizarre faces have led to many people fearing and persecuting these species. Globally, around a quarter of bat species are threatened by factors including habitat loss, roost destruction, hunting, and climate change. To find the most effective ways of conserving these creatures, researchers at Conservation First, the University of Leeds, and the University of Cambridge (where I work) have updated a report that gathers together information on how well attempts to conserve bats actually worked. First published in 2013, the original bat synopsis was widely read and downloaded, despite the authors finding relatively few studies of conservation actions for bats. The new update just released found 75 percent more studies than the original, and for the first time includes studies originally published in Spanish and Portuguese. Studies are included if they test a conservation action, which could range from adding a bat box to legal protection, and measure the outcome for bats. 							<![CDATA[Reduced-impact logging doesn’t need to be a death knell for a region’s big animals, according to a new study in Biotropica — but only if hunting is well-regulated. Employing camera traps to survey Amazonian animals in Guyana, researchers found that large mammals and birds did not see a lower population of target species in reduced-impact logging areas as compared to unlogged areas. For some species, like jaguars and pumas, population numbers actually rose. The research was conducted in an unusually managed swath of forest: Iwokrama. &#8220;Iwokrama’s management is fully integrated with the indigenous people who have used these forests for thousands of years and are now socially and financially invested in the Iwokrama project,&#8221; explained lead author, Anand Roopsind, a PhD Candidate with the University of Florida. Spreading over nearly 400,000 hectares (close to 990,000 acres) — an area a little smaller than Rhode Island — Iwokrama Forest is managed by the not-for-profit Iwokrama organization and 16 local Makushi communities through the North Rupununi District Development Board with support from the Guyanese government and the private sector. The organization funds itself in part via ecotourism and reduced-impact logging. Local indigenous people are allowed to hunt for subsistence in Iwokrama Forest, but all hunting by outsiders or for commercial use is strictly prohibited. Roopsind and team’s research suggests that Iwokrama’s goal towards sustainably utilizing the Amazon rainforest is largely working. Iwokrama’s reduced-impact logging program, which received FSC-certification in 2016, is stringent compared to industry norms. 							<![CDATA[Researchers in the Brazilian Amazon say they have found no evidence that the composition of timber species and total forest value recover even after highly selective logging, suggesting that the most commercially valuable species must inevitably become rare or even “economically extinct” in old logging frontiers. Brazil accounts for 85 percent of all native neotropical forest roundlog production, but the sustainability of timber harvests beyond the initial, typically selective rounds of logging, remains poorly understood, according to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE today. A team of researchers with the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK studied 824 harvest areas in private and community-owned forests scattered throughout the 124-million-hectare (more than 306-million-acre) Brazilian state of Pará, which is the source of almost half of all timber production in the Brazilian Amazon. The researchers analyzed data from legal logging operations that harvested some 17.3 million cubic meters of timber from 314 different tree species. They say their results show that managing yields of selectively-logged forests is crucial for the long-term health of forest biodiversity as well as the financial viability of local industries. Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine, the group&#8217;s pianist and guitarist Jesse Carmichael, and alt-rock band Guster guitarist and singer Adam Gardner visited Guatemala last December. They met with governmental officials, the Association of Forest Communities of Peten (ACOFOP), and locals involved in the harvest, processing, and export of certified wood from community forest concessions. “We saw firsthand that the benefits of community forest management extend not only to the forests, but also to Guatemalan communities,” the musicians wrote. Most of the unit escaped, but four men were killed in the attack, bringing the ranger death toll in Garamba to eight just this year. As similar stories play out across Africa, it’s easy to see why reserve managers have turned to military technology, including drones, to combat poaching of high-value wildlife. Drones to the Rescue? The use of drones, a.k.a. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), is among of the most sophisticated of the proposed solutions to the poaching crisis, and certainly the headline-grabber. Conservationists have called for deployment of UAS’s to the front lines of the poaching crisis, in order to enhance surveillance of protected areas and detection and pursuit of elephant and rhino poachers. However unlike other drivers, timber harvesting in the tropics rarely leads to outright forest clearing. Instead, logging drives deforestation more subtly. Successive harvests, especially when conducted in shorter-than-prescribed cycles, diminishes the value of the forest as a timber-producing commodity, increasing the likelihood of its conversion for agriculture or plantations. The controversy centers around a massive concession managed by Sabah&#8217;s Forestry Department. The million hectare concession, called Yayasan Sabah, was supposed to be managed sustainably upon its founding in 1966, generating money for social services into perpetuity for the people of Sabah. Instead the concession was used as a personal rainy day fund by successive politicians to enrich themselves and prop up their campaigns, leading to severe overharvesting that decimated forests and wrecked timber yields. By the early 1990s it became clear that Yayasan Sabah was on a path toward insolvency. Plunging revenue was met with ever more desperate measures, like harvesting steep slopes, expanding the pool of targeted species, and harvesting smaller trees. NASA&#8217;s Woody Turner breaks sensing technologies into two scales: remote sensing platforms like satellites and airplanes, and in-situ devices like camera traps, drones, phones, tags, and sensors. &#8220;Remote sensing involves a wide array of tools and techniques on orbiting satellites and flying aircraft,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;It enables directly observing large-scale ecosystems and large organisms, depicting the broader environmental context for biodiversity, tracking climatic and other drivers of biodiversity change (often for use in ecological models), and making consistent observations across time and space for biodiversity monitoring.&#8221; &#8220;Remote sensing is increasingly complemented by in situ sensing with cameras on stationary objects or small drones, sound recorders, cell phones, electronic tags, and fragments of genetic material sampled directly from the environment.&#8221; Camera trap in Costa Rica Turner says conservation effort would benefit from increased coordination between remote sensing and in situ approaches. Brazilian municipalities are planning to use drones to map properties and monitor forest cover as they move to step up enforcement of the country&#8217;s Forest Code, reports The Financial Times. According to a story published Monday, the municipality of Altamira in the state of Pará recently purchased a drone for a pilot monitoring project that aims to support the development of the Cadastro Ambiental Rural (CAR), a government-managed database that will contain details on all properties in the Amazon region. The CAR underpins Brazil&#8217;s recently revised Forest Code by establishing who owns what land and is therefore legally liable for complying with environmental laws. Altamira says the drone has become a necessity because Brazil&#8217;s current satellite-based system isn&#8217;t timely or accurate enough to ensure implementation at a property-level scale. Alta Floresta is also planning to buy a drone for the same purpose. According to the The Financial Times, the drones being considered by municipalities are priced upwards of $40,000 per unit. In other regions, conservationists are increasingly turning to hobbyist model airplanes for conservation work. At a cost of $1,000-2,000, these &#8220;conservation drones&#8221; are outfitted with camera and sensors and used for a wide range of applications, including tracking wildlife, collecting land use data, and monitoring deforestation and fires. Worse still, this truly bizarre bird is on the verge of extinction, following the fate of its much more famous relative, the dodo bird. Recently, conservationists estimated that fewer than 200 survived on the island and maybe far fewer; frustratingly, sightings of the bird have been almost non-existent in recent years. But conservation efforts were buoyed this December when researchers stumbled on a juvenile little dodo hanging out in a tree. Not only was this an important sighting of a nearly-extinct species, but even more so it proved the species is still successfully breeding. In other words: there is still time to save the species from extinction so long as conservationists are able to raise the funds needed. &#8220;This is the first time breeding has been recorded in over 10 years,&#8221; says biologist Rebecca Stirnemann, who has been working with Samoa&#8217;s birds birds since 2010 and is spearheading efforts to learn more about the imperiled species using wildlife drones and the latest in tagging technology. &#8220;Everyone had questioned whether the bird still existed. While the argument for altering logging approaches to limit forest damage makes intuitive sense, a new study suggests that the carbon benefits may not bear out in practice. Bronson Griscom and Peter Ellis of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Jack Putz of the University of Florida evaluated nine sites in logging concessions in Indonesian Borneo, measuring the width of logging trails and the mass of trees damaged by harvesting. From that work they estimated emissions associated with reduced impact logging (RIL) and compared them with conventional logging. What they found was a surprise: reduced impact logging &#8212; at least as practiced in the Indonesian concessions &#8212; did not meaningfully reduce emissions relative to conventional logging. &#8220;We found that concessions certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC, N = 3), when compared with noncertified concessions (N = 6), did not have lower overall CO2 emissions from logging activity (felling, skidding, and hauling),&#8221; they write. The report, titled State of the Forest Carbon Markets 2013, shows that offsets representing 8.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide were transacted in 2012, a 16 percent increase over 2011. But the average value of each credit dipped 8 percent from $8.50 to $7.80. Nonetheless the activity suggests the market of REDD+ credits may have stabilized after the volume fell 62 percent between 2010 and 2011 in the aftermath of largely failed climate talks in Cancun, Mexico. REDD+ credits, which proponents hope will create financial incentives to keep forests standing instead of chopping them down for commodities, represented about 31 percent of the overall market for carbon credits generated by forestry projects in 2012. Afforestation and reforestation projects accounted for about an equivalent share of carbon offsets, followed by agriculture and agroforestry projects (20 percent) and &#8220;improved forest management&#8221; (IPM) projects that aim to reduce the impact of logging operations (18 percent). However in the state of Assam, these commonly used weapons of warfare are being used to monitor the rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) population. The Kaziranga National Park in Assam has deployed aerial drones to monitor poaching activity within the park’s boundaries to protect the endangered one-horned rhino population. The BBC Reported that the Kaziranga chief NK Vasu said the maiden drone flight earlier this week was a &#8220;milestone in wildlife protection&#8221;. Two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinos call this park a home and it also supports elephants, tigers, and other wildlife. However, rhinos have fallen victim to poaching and the tactic of using drones is a hope to prevent this from happening. The Chitwan National Park in Nepal has used drones by the WWF recently to great success as an anti-hunting measure. Therefore, a similar system is being replicated in Kaziranga. This is the first time that drones have been used to monitor wildlife in any Indian National Park and it will now be possible to keep an eye on the remotest parts of the 480 sq km (185 sq miles) park. The grant seems certain to boost emerging &#8220;conservation drone&#8221; systems. Reviewing an extensive body of recent scientific literature, Philip Shearman of the University of Papua New Guinea and Australian National University, Jane Bryan of the University of Papua New Guinea and the University of Tasmania, and William F. Laurance of James Cook University conclude that dominant harvesting practices in tropical forests do not allow enough time for forestry recovery, leading to significant degradation of biodiversity and carbon stocks. The researchers extend their argument to conventional logging approaches as well as &#8220;sustainable forest management&#8221; techniques like reduced-impact logging (RIL), which aim to cut collateral damage to the forest from selective logging. WWF, the Global Canopy Programme (GCP) and the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) will on Monday issue a report arguing that forest bonds could mobilize private-sector money to augment public sector finance needed to the early stages of the REDD+ program, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Forest bonds issued by forest countries would be sold to investors to provide up-front capital for REDD+ activities. But a new paper, published in the journal Conservation Letters, highlights an often overlooked opportunity for conservation: selectively logged forests. A number of studies have shown forests logged for only a few valuable tree species retain the majority of their biodiversity. The new paper, authored by Princeton University&#8217;s Brendan Fisher and others, confirmed this by analyzing the number of birds and dung beetles &#8212; considered good indicators of overall species richness &#8212; in logged and unlogged forests in Malaysian Borneo. The researchers then looked at financial returns of logging in the same forests. Changes in standing timber value and species richness for all birds, understory birds, and dung beetles across unlogged (primary), once-logged, and twice-logged lowland forests. The two main categories of plantation forests are productive plantations with 109.3 million ha planted globally and protective plantations with 30.1 million ha planted globally. In fact, in 2005 1/3rd of industrial round wood was sourced from productive plantations. The ten most common planted genera are Pinus, Cunninghamia, Eucalyptus, Populus, Acacia, Larix, Picea, Tectona, Castanea, and Quercus which together represent 2/3rds of the total species planted by ha. Therefore, a successful ecosystem goods and services strategy could initially focus on enhancement strategies pertaining to these ten specific genera. Coupled with the global expansion of plantation forests along with, according to IUCN, the 1.6 billion people who rely upon forests for some aspect of their daily sustenance, it should be a critical imperative to frame out models such as total economic value (TEV) to measure, monitor, and improve upon ecosystem services that provide provisioning, regulating, supporting, and amenity values within the ecological environment of a plantation forest. For example, a TEV analysis for a plantation forest would consider direct use value, indirect use value, option value, bequest value, and existence value. Over the past twenty years Indonesia lost more than 24 million hectares of forest, an area larger than the U.K. Much of the deforestation was driven by logging for overseas markets. According to the World Bank, a substantial proportion of this logging was illegal. While deforestation rates have dipped since the late 1990s, illegal logging remains a problem in Indonesia. In fact it is seen as one of the biggest challenges for Indonesia in meeting the greenhouse gas reductions targets pledged by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono: in 2009 the Indonesian President pledged to unilaterally cut the country&#8217;s emissions 26 percent from a projected 2020 baseline. The research&#8212;which analyzed current greenhouse gas emissions emissions and reduction potential in eight sectors: peat, forestry, agriculture, power, transportation, petroleum and gas, cement and buildings&#8212;found that 85 percent of the country&#8217;s emissions result from land use: 41 percent come from degradation and destruction of peatlands, while 37 percent result from deforestation (currently 800,000 hectares per year), degradation through logging (1 million hectares), and forest fires. Some researchers argued that the economics of REDD may fall short of competing with returns from other forms of land use, including logging and plantation development, while others said that a successful REDD program could undermine wildlife-friendly farming approaches, promote conversion of low carbon landscapes for industrial tree-planting projects, and shift conservation priorities toward carbon-dense ecosystems. In the 1980s and 1990s pressure from activist groups led some of the world&#8217;s largest forestry products companies and retailers to join forces with environmentalists to form the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a certification standard that aims to reduce the environmental impact of wood and paper production on natural forests. Despite initial skepticism on whether buyers would pay a premium for greener forest products, FSC quickly grew and by 2000 had become a standard in many markets, including Europe and the United States. Companies like Home Depot, Lowe&#8217;s, and Ikea are today strong supporters of the FSC. But the FSC has not been without controversy. In recent years some activists have voiced concern about FSC standards as well as the credibility of auditors that certify timber operations. Some forest advocates question the certification of products from &#8216;mixed sources&#8217;, which allows non-FSC-certified wood fiber, to be labeled as FSC-certified. 							<![CDATA[Destruction of old-growth or primary forests looms large in discussions in Copenhagen over a scheme to compensate tropical countries for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD). Some environmental groups are pressing for conservation of old-growth forests &#8212; the most carbon-dense, and biologically-rich state of forests &#8212; to be the centerpiece of REDD, while industry and other actors are pushing for &#8220;sustainable forest management&#8221; or logging using reduced-impact techniques to be the primary focus of REDD. Central to the issue are concerns over biodiversity. Logged forests have been shown to be biologically impoverished relative to intact forests, but only temporarily in the case of selectively logged concessions, which under favorable conditions (i.e. reduced impact logging techniques, use of forest buffers, etc) can see a recovery of 70-80 percent of their biodiversity (among conspicuous plant and animal groups) within 30 years. Of course some primary forest specialists &#8212; species that cannot tolerate disturbance &#8212; lose out, likely heading towards extinction if at least some of their habitat is not preserved at the scale needed for their survival. While Brazil ranks at the top most years in terms of tropical deforestation, the country has dramatically reduced forest loss on an annual basis since 2005. Analyzing scientific studies on the consequences of different types of logging on great apes, Arnold van Kreveld and Ingrid Roerhorst found that logging concessions certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an environmental standard for forestry operations, can serve as useful supplements to existing protected areas that support great ape populations. Butler &#8220;In contrast to other forms of logging, FSC certified logging offers increased assurance that the appropriate habitat for great apes will be maintained,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;The western gorillas and Bornean orang-utans in particular can be found in high densities in well managed FSC certified concessions. Chimpanzees and Sumatran orang-utans seem to be more sensitive to human activities, even though they appear to be able to survive well in selectively logged concessions with low hunting pressure.&#8221; Van Kreveld and Roerhorst note that FSC-certification combines selective logging with other safeguards, including closing off roads to the public and protecting selected fruit trees species. Additionally, FSC-logging operations are third-party audited to ensure compliance. 							<![CDATA[The weak definition of what constitutes forest under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) puts the effectiveness of a proposed mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) at risk, argue researchers writing in the journal Conservation Letters. Lending academic weight to concerns that environmentalists have long voiced, Nophea Sasaki and Francis E. Putz note that current definitions fail to effectively account for degradation of forests, including industrial logging and conversion of natural forests to some types of plantations. The result: an international climate framework could ignore substantial emissions from forest degradation, a process that reduces forest carbon stock and other ecosystem services, increases the risk of fire, and diminishes biodiversity. Over the past decade global tropical deforestation was estimated to result in 1.1–2.2 billion tons year. Forest degradation is thought to have resulted in similar emissions. The UNFCCC defines &#8220;forest&#8221; as an area of 0.05-1 hectares in size with 10 to 30 percent covered by canopy consisting of trees that reach a height of at least 2-5 meters at maturity. The definition means that an old-growth rainforest can be heavily logged, with substantial amounts of timber (biomass) removed, without recognition of the loss of carbon. Green groups fear that this limitation could allow forestry companies to collect carbon payments while continuing to inflict heavy damage in forest areas.
