							<![CDATA[SAMOSIR, Indonesia — On retirement from public life, Wilmar Eliaser Simandjorang found a quiet place on a hillside overlooking Lake Toba, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, to write about this landscape sacred to the region’s Batak people. “If we don&#8217;t pay attention to this, Lake Toba will be just a memory,” Wilmar told Mongabay Indonesia at his home near the lake, the site of a volcanic eruption 74,000 years ago that plunged the world into global winter and famine. More recently, North Sumatra province’s environment department has warned of a burgeoning pollution problem from the waste dumped into Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world. Many here in this subdued lakeside region today, which is home to Sumatra’s ethnic Batak people (and the center of seven districts in North Sumatra province), say a complex array of changes taking place around the Toba landscape are reaching a tipping point. “The forest is being cut down, both legally and illegally — biodiversity is being burned,” Wilmar said. “Rainwater is just running off; it carries ash, trash and pesticides into the lake.” A study of 60 water samples published in the journal Advances in Oceanography and Limnology in 2024 confirms worrying local testimony. The research, conducted in 2020-2021 by scientists from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture, Indonesia’s premier forestry university, indicated intensive ecological distress. Researchers revealed nitrogen levels greater than the safe threshold set by Indonesia’s environment ministry, threatening both fish and water quality. At Pinatubo’s jump-off point, more than a dozen vehicles packed with tourists, including Maria and her boyfriend, were suddenly blocked by a crowd of locals. “They started shouting their frustrations,” says Maria, 23, who asked that her real name be withheld after experiencing backlash and online harassment from tour companies after she posted about the incident on social media. The Indigenous Aetas were protesting their long-standing exclusion from Pinatubo’s tourism gains. Despite the volcano area being recognized as Aeta ancestral land, private tour operators and the local government tourism office have managed sightseeing almost exclusively, with Indigenous locals only employed as occasional freelance guides. According to tourism officials, standard Pinatubo tours cost about $125 for a group of five. This includes a $12 environmental protection fee for the local tourism office and $8 for an Aeta guide for the day. That latter number is less than the minimum wage, and Aeta protesters say they often receive less, as little as $6. Between 7.8 and 7.7, values that according to worst-case climate projections will be common in ocean waters globally by the end of the century, seagrass and macroalgae, or seaweed, dominate the seascape. Since 2008, scientists from all over the world have been using this area as a natural biogeochemistry lab and a window on the future. Researchers working in these waters, naturally acidified due to the presence of underwater volcanoes, are studying animal and seagrass populations that have inhabited these rocks for generations, among other aspects of local ecology. “We have photosynthetic organisms like [the seagrass] Posidonia and other types of macroalgae, which are already somehow adapted to marine acidification,&#8221; Marco Munari, a marine ecologist and ecotoxicologist at Zoological Station Anton Dohrn (SZN) in Naples told Mongabay in an interview. Until earlier this year, Munari was coordinator of SZN’s Ischia Marine Centre; he has since moved to a different SZN branch in Fano. Within 150 years of their appearance, large fruit-eating animals like the giant tortoises (Cylindraspis indica) and flying foxes (Pteropus niger), a type of bat, were wiped off the face of La Réunion. This speck of land in the western Indian Ocean, an overseas department of France, was one of the last corners of the planet to be colonized by humans. It is also home to the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It was recently in the throes of another eruption, having erupted almost 240 times since 1650. The scars from these eruptions are now helping scientists uncover the lasting effects of permanent human settlement on life on the island, including the loss of large-fruited trees like Sideroxylon borbonicum, known locally as bois de fer de Bourbon, and Labourdonnaisia calophylloides, or bois de natte à petites feuilles. The fates of flora and fauna are linked. Animals and birds are important to plants; they help to disperse seeds, transporting them near and far. Which seeds and how far they get scattered depend on the kind of creatures that get their paws or beaks on the seeds. 							<![CDATA[The normally idyllic resort island of Bali in Indonesia has hogged international headlines since last month, following the eruption of Mount Agung that has driven tens of thousands of residents from their homes and disrupted countless travel plans. But there may be a proverbial silver lining in the very real ash cloud that has forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights to and from the island — and one with implications for slowing global warming. Swirling within the billowing ash cloud that Agung continues to spew up to 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) into the sky is a cocktail of volcanic dust and particulates, primarily sulfur dioxide (SO2), known as aerosols. The last time scientists studied the massive dispersal of volcanic aerosols in the stratosphere on this kind of scale, following the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, they found that the particulates blocked some of the sunlight, and therefore the heat, reaching the Earth’s surface. The result: a temporarily cooling of the Northern Hemisphere by up to 0.6 degrees Celsius (1.1 degrees Fahrenheit). 							<![CDATA[Geoengineering schemes that aim to slow global warming by seeding oceans with iron to boost carbon dioxide-absorbing phytoplankton may not lead to long-term sequestration of the important greenhouse gas, finds a new study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The research looked at the impact of the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which released large amounts of iron in the North Atlantic near Iceland. Some researchers speculated that iron fertilization would lead to a large-scale plankton bloom that would absorb massive amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere, helping fight climate change. The new study however dealt another blow to those hopes. The researchers found that the iron fertilization effect quickly died out due to the rapid depletion of nitrate from the upper layers of the ocean, depriving the phytoplankton of nitrogen, a critical nutrient needed for growth. “The additional removal of carbon by the ash-stimulated phytoplankton was therefore only 15 to 20 per cent higher than in other years making for a significant, but short-lived change to the biogeochemistry of the Iceland Basin,” said study lead author Eric Achterberg of the National Oceanography Centre in the U.K. The results are consistent with other research. A 2009 study published in Nature found that carbon uptake after iron fertilization was 80 times lower than suggested by earlier research. While new species are discovered every day, Peter Vršanský and company&#8217;s discovery of a light-producing cockroach, Lucihormetica luckae, in Ecuador is remarkable for many reasons, not the least that it may already be extinct. The new species represents the only known case of mimicry by bioluminescence in a land animal. Like a venomless king snake beating its tail to copy the unmistakable warning of a rattlesnake, Lucihormetica luckae&#8217;s bioluminescent patterns are nearly identical to the poisonous click beetle, with which it shares (or shared) its habitat. Most common in the deep sea where it first evolved, bioluminescence is the chemical reactions that give certain organisms the ability to produce light. Other luminescing species use light to communicate, attract mates or evade predators, as well as illuminate their environment. According to the research published in the journal Naturwissenschaften, Lucihormetica luckae is the first known case of asymmetrical bioluminescence. It sports two eye-like spots on its upper back and a tiny third one on the right side only. These lanterns are covered over by a reflective surface similar to an automobile headlight, Vršanský told mongabay.com. This allows the insect to conceal itself behind its own brightness. The zone of floating rock was first sighted early this week by a Royal New Zealand Air Force plane. A subsequent visit by a navy ship Thursday confirmed the spectacle. Lieutenant Tim Oscar, a Royal Australian Navy officer on a three-year exchange with the Royal New Zealand Navy, saw described the site, &#8220;the weirdest thing I&#8217;ve seen in 18 years at sea.&#8221; &#8220;The lookout reported a shadow on the ocean ahead of us so I ordered the ship&#8217;s spotlight to be trained on the area. As far ahead as I could observe was a raft of pumice moving up and down with the swell.&#8221; &#8220;The rock looked to be sitting two feet above the surface of the waves, and lit up a brilliant white color in the spotlight. After starting his own project to study global warming, a once-prominent climate change skeptic and physicist says he now accepts the reality of anthropogenic climate change. &#8220;Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I&#8217;m now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause,&#8221; Richard Muller writes in the New York Times as his team, the Berkeley Earth Project, releases a new paper that finds an even stronger link between greenhouse gas emissions and rising temperatures worldwide than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). According to the paper, which hasn&#8217;t been peer-reviewed yet, global land temperatures have increased 0.83 degrees Celsius (1.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in the last 250 years. The area, long-used for cattle ranching, is home to Andean condors (Vultur gryphus), cougars (Puma concolor), Andean fox (Lycalopex culpaeus), silvery grebes (Podiceps occipitalis), black-faced ibis (Theristicus melanopis), spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), and three species of endangered frogs. The protected area stretches from 3,900 feet (1,188 meters) to 18,700 feet (5,699 meters) above sea level. &#8220;The contiguous 264,382 acre land purchase around Volcan Antisana represents one of the greatest conservation successes ever in the Andes,&#8221; said Robert Ridgely, executive director of World Land Trust-US, which helped secure the properties along with local organization Fundación Jocotoco and the Ecuadorian government. Although the region was declared a reserve in 1993, 80 percent of the land had not been purchased at the time from private land owners. The next 18 years were spent securing private land for protection. &#8220;Due to a long history of intensive grazing, Antisana’s ecosystems are significantly degraded, and this affects an important part of the watershed that supplies water to much of Quito. 							<![CDATA[Two hundred and sixty million years ago the Earth experienced its worst mass extinction: 95 percent of marine life and 70 percent of terrestrial life vanished. Long a subject of dispute, researchers from the University of Leeds believe they have confirmed the reason behind the so-called Permian extinction. A giant volcanic eruption in what is today’s Emeishan province in China unleashed half a million cubic kilometers of lava and tossed massive quantities of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere 260 million years ago. The sulphur dioxide caused cloud formations across the entire planet. This cooled the Earth while subsequently dropping acid rain across the globe, leading to the planet’s most pervasive extinction. &#8220;When fast flowing, low viscosity magma meets shallow sea it&#8217;s like throwing water into a chip pan – there&#8217;s spectacular explosion producing gigantic clouds of steam,&#8221; explains Professor Paul Wignall, a palaeontologist at the University of Leeds, and the lead author of the paper. Fortunately, the researchers, publishing their findings in Science, were able to determine the exact time of the massive eruption in China, thereby linking it to the Permian extinction. Since the eruption occurred in a shallow sea it left a layer of igneous rock in-between two layers of sedimentary rock which were able to be identified with their epochs by their marine fossils. &#8220;The abrupt extinction of marine life we can clearly see in the fossil record firmly links giant volcanic eruptions with global environmental catastrophe, a correlation that has often been controversial,&#8221; says Wignall. Based on observations of the global temperature effects from aerosols released during volcanic eruptions, some scientists have proposed scattering light-reflecting sulfate particles in the atmosphere as a way to mitigate climate change. Paul J. Crutzen, winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the hole in the ozone layer, has said that injecting sulfur into the atmosphere could slow global warming by reflecting solar radiation back into space. Now a new paper by Kevin E. Trenberth and Aiguo Dai of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Boulder Colorado, cautions that volcanic eruptions have other climate effects. Examining precipitation and streamflow records from 1950 to 2004 to measure the effects of volcanic eruptions from Mexico&#8217;s El Chichón (1982) and the Philippines&#8217; Pinatubo (1991), the authors show that the eruption of Pinatubo caused &#8220;substantial global decrease in precipitation over land, a record decrease in runoff and river discharge into the oceans, and widespread drying over land during the following year&#8221; Volcano outside Yogjakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia Trenberth and Dai conclude that &#8220;major adverse effects, including drought, could arise from geoengineering solutions to global warming,&#8221; according to Geophysical Research Letters. Writing in the current issue of the journal Science, geologists at Roskilde University in Denmark, Oregon State University and Rutgers, argue that intense volcanic activity occurred at the same time ocean temperatures jumped five to six degrees Celsius during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum. &#8220;That prehistoric volcanic activity released more than 2000 gigatonnes (billion metric tons) of carbon into the oceans and atmosphere in the form of methane and carbon dioxide &#8212; two potent greenhouse gases,&#8221; said Michael Storey, a geologist at Roskilde University in Denmark and lead author of the study. &#8220;The carbon probably came from the heating of earlier deposits of decayed organic matter &#8212; similar to deposits in the Atlantic and North Sea we tap today for oil and gas.&#8221; Eruption in Java, Indonesia. The research, partly funded by NASA, shows that volcanic eruptions in high latitudes can greatly alter global climate and distant river flows. The scientists found that Iceland&#8217;s Laki volcanic event, a series of roughly ten eruptions from June 1783 through February 1784, altered atmospheric circulations across much of the Northern Hemisphere, reducing rainfall over much of the Nile River watershed and producing record low river levels which cut agricultural production. The researchers said that the Laki event had a significant impact on climate because it released large amounts of aerosol-forming sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. The aerosols, which cool climate by reflecting incoming sunlight into space, may have reduced the average temperature over Northern Hemisphere land masses by as much as 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer of 1783, according to computer models used in the study. The low temperatures may have greatly weakened the African and Indian monsoon which generally brings precipitation to the region. Further, fewer clouds due to the weakened monsoon would have meant higher temperatures across the Nile&#8217;s watershed, further worsening drought conditions. The Directorate of Volcanology and Geological Hazzard Mitigation has raised the alert level from II to III on 12th April. The authority estimated that the volcano would most likely erupt soon, in the next two weeks. On 22nd November 1994, Mount Merapi erupted, causing 67 human deaths and killing thousands of animals. In February 2001, Merapi became active again but no one was killed. At present, Merapi is returning to be very active and most of the 29,000 villagers, many are poor farmers, have already been evacuated to safer places. However, the local authority has no means to evacuate their livestock. During the last week ProFauna&#8217;s members in Yogyakarta (Central Java) has been busily monitoring the development of Mount Merapi. They also observed the potential hazard on thousands of live stock and cattle left behind, which would likely be killed if the volcano erupts. According to Reuters, government officials have advised residents to leave the foothills of the volcano, but have not made any official orders. Vulcanologists say that the volcano could erupt by the end of April. Mount Merapi is the youngest in a group of volcanoes in southern Java and has erupted at least 68 times since 1548. Volcanoes helped slow ocean warming trend, researchers find Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Release Ocean temperatures might have risen even higher during the last century if it weren&#8217;t for volcanoes that spewed ashes and aerosols into the upper atmosphere, researchers have found. The eruptions also offset a large percentage of sea level rise caused by human activity. Using 12 new state-of-the-art climate models, the researchers found that ocean warming and sea level rise in the 20th century were substantially reduced by the 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia. Butler, mongabay.com December 7, 2005 The Manaro Volcano of Ambae Island, Vanuatu in the South Pacific erupted in spectacular fashion early Thursday. The volano shot steam, toxic gases and ash up to 1,500 meters (4,500 feet) into the air. Thousands of villagers were evacuated from the path of a possible mud flow that could result from the eruption. A &#8220;red zone&#8221; has been declared around the volcano and several ships were ready to evacuate islanders if the situation worsens. The island of Ambae is little more than the peak of a volcanic mountain rising dramatically from the sea. The island&#8217;s 10,000 residents rely mostly on cash crop production. 							<![CDATA[Poisonous volcanic gas probably caused history&#8217;s worst mass extinction event Poisonous volcanic gas probably caused worst mass extinction says new study mongabay.com December 2, 2005 The mass extinction event at the end of the Permian &#8212; where more than two-thirds of reptile and amphibian families perished and 95% of oceans life forms became extinct &#8212; was probably caused by poisonous volcanic gas, according to research published in the journal Geology. The researchers believe that volcanic gases from the eruption, near present day Siberia, depleted earth&#8217;s protective ozone layer and acidified the land and sea. The study supports research presented in the September issue of Geology which argued that a dramatic rise in carbon dioxide 250 million years ago may have caused global temperatures to soar and result in Earth&#8217;s greatest mass extinction. The new study analyzed polysaccharides, large sugar-based structures common in plants and soil, found in rocks from the Dolomites in Italy, while the earlier National Center for Atmospheric Research modeled changes in atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and ocean waters. A massive volcanic eruption could well have increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which would have warmed and acidified oceans. Today scientists are increasingly concerned by ocean acidification which threatens marine species that rely on calcium carbonate shells and skeletons. Researchers recently warned that due to increasingly ocean acidity and rising sea temperatures, most of the world&#8217;s coral reefs could die by the end of the century.
