PALU, Indonesia — Few people knew about the luscious coral off Palu, in Indonesia’s Central Sulwaesi province, before an earthquake turned it into an underwater wasteland. “You didn’t even need to go to Raja Ampat to see coral this beautiful,” says Iksam Djorimi, referring to what’s widely regarded as Indonesia’s most hallowed dive site. Before the quake, Iksam, an archaeologist at the province-run Central Sulawesi Museum here in this eastern Indonesian city, would often dive in Palu’s narrow, horseshoe-like bay. He had little company; only one dive resort brought customers to the reefs here, though a tour guide Iksam knew at the better-known Bunaken dive site in neighboring North Sulawesi province had also planned to take a group to Palu’s reefs. The coral also supported the fish that helped sustain the economy in this region of nearly 1 million people. Then the Palu-Koro fault shook. More than 4,400 people died in last September’s magnitude-7.5 earthquake that simultaneously triggered tsunamis, landslides and nightmarish liquefaction, where moist soil turns into quicksand, swallowing up houses, cars and people. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced, and the government estimates rebuilding will cost $2.6 billion. Several thousand people in fishing families lost not only their homes to the tsunami, but also the boats and equipment on which their livelihoods depended. Now, it seems they’ve lost a critical link in their food chain. A few days after the quake, experts speculated that Palu’s reefs had suffered “tremendous damage.” Iksam had a chance to see for…This article was originally published on Mongabay

JAKARTA — A devastating tsunami that killed more than 400 people in Indonesia has left the last surviving population of Javan rhinos unscathed — but has highlighted once again the dire threats facing the critically endangered species. The Dec. 22 tsunami, caused by a landslide in the Sunda Strait following a massive eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano, struck the western tip of Java and southern end of Sumatra. The confirmed death toll as of Dec. 27 was 429, with 154 people missing and feared dead. The volcano, a remnant of the legendary 1883 Krakatau eruption, is also within sight of Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, home to the world’s last Javan rhinos (Rhinoceros sondaicus). The tsunami generated waves up to 5 meters (16 feet) high, some of which crashed ashore Ujung Kulon, killing two park agency officers and damaging office posts. All of the rhinos, however, are believed to be safe, said Mamat Rahmat, the park chief. He said the animals tended to cluster along the southern coast of Ujung Kulon, sheltered from the impact of the waves coming from the northwest. The latest estimate of the park’s Javan rhinos puts the population at a minimum of 68 individuals. Ridwan Setiawan, national rhino officer at WWF-Indonesia, said a joint team had been deployed to assess any damage, including checking camera traps installed near the coast. Like Mamat, he said few rhinos were found in the affected northern stretch of the park, and credited the hilly terrain, peaking at…This article was originally published on Mongabay

Abdullah Rajab is not young. He has a shock of white hair. And when he laughs, it’s clear that many of his teeth are missing. But whenever a youngster asks about preserving the Krueng Sabee River, this 65-year-old brings to the discussion a rare focus and intensity. The 30-kilometer-long Krueng Sabee is located in the eponymous subdistrict of Aceh Jaya – one of the regencies hit hardest by the tsunami that struck Sumatra on December 26, 2004. Infrastructure was damaged. Thousands of people died or went missing. Little beachfront was left. The only segment of the regency saved from disaster were the thick, forested hills of Bukit Barisan. It is this forest that Rajab and the Krueng Sabee River Forum he established in 2008 want to preserve. Year by year, Rajab has watched silt fill the stretch of the Krueng Sabee that winds past his house in Bunta village. During the rainy season Bunta and other villages along the river’s banks get floods. Rajab credits the murk and floods to soil erosion near the river’s headwaters. “We know that the forests have all been cut – people take wood from that region indiscriminately,” he told Mongabay. The forest the Krueng Sabee River Forum considers its jurisdiction spans 500 hectares. It is home to elephants, tigers, honey bears, long-tailed monkeys, gibbons, langurs and various bird species. Rajab recalled that in the 1970s – when he first set foot in the river shortly after moving to Bunta from his native South Aceh…This article was originally published on Mongabay

The Lamont Seamounts are an example of the view from the seafloor synthesized by a team of oceanographers at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. The seamounts are due west of El Salvador, at about 9.55 degrees N, 104 degrees W. How do you celebrate World Oceans Day? Well, if you’re Google you make the oceans of the world’s most impressive interactive digital globe, Google Earth, come alive. With oceanographers at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Google Earth has fine-tuned its oceans’ resolution in selected areas from 1 kilometer to just 100 meters. “In spite of the importance of the oceans for life on earth, the landscape beneath the sea is hidden in darkness and poorly mapped,” says oceanographer William Ryan from Lamont-Doherty in a press release. “While we can map the surface of planets from spacecraft in a single mission, to obtain comparable detail of the hidden seascape requires visiting every spot with a ship.” Our general ignorance about the world’s oceans has led to the common, and accurate, quip that we know about the moon’s surface than we do our own oceans. Google Earth, however, is working to keep up with the latest data from oceanographers, including nearly 500 cruises covering 3 million miles over the last 20 years. Such expeditions are about much more than simple exploration; mapping the seafloor helps researchers better understand marine ecosystems, and provides better insights into earthquake and tsunami zones, perhaps in the future saving lives. Around 5 percent of the oceans on Google Earth…This article was originally published on Mongabay

The tragic earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last month is likely to boost wood imports into the recovering nation, adding increased pressure on the already imperiled rainforests of Southeast Asia. Even before the disaster, Japan was the world’s number one importer of wood chips and plywood and the second largest importer of logs. Japan usually imports plywood from China, Malaysia, and Indonesia, however the forests of Southeast Asia are facing tremendous loss due to logging and clearing for industrial-scale agriculture, such as palm oil. According to a press release from Wood Resources International LLC, the Japanese government has already requested 30,000 prefab temporary houses for disaster victims over the next two months. Demand for imports is expected to increase once infrastructure has been repaired and power restored. “Over the next 6-12 month, it can be expected that there will be a rise in demand for both lumber and plywood. This will result in increased importation of processed products and of logs to supply domestic Japanese mills,” reads the press release from Wood Resources International LLC. A recent article from the Borneo Post largely agreed. “One timber player rules out a ’30-40 per cent jump in exports’ to Japan – which mostly buys plywood from Malaysia – but expects a probable steady rise in demand from Japan to help in the reconstruction process, depending on the extent of the damage to buildings,” AmResearch, an investment research firm based in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, told the Borneo Post. Both Malaysia and Indonesia…This article was originally published on Mongabay

The images reveal large-scale devastation of coastal areas in the Sendai region of Japan. “Today, we’ve published imagery of the Sendai region at even higher resolution, which we collected on Sunday and Monday,” wrote Keiichi Kawai, Senior Product Manager, on the official Google Blog. “The new Sendai imagery, along with satellite imagery from throughout the area, is now live in the base imagery layer of Google Earth and will soon be visible in Google Maps.” Google says it will continue acquiring updated images and posting them on Google Earth to facilitate post-tsunami recovery efforts. “We hope our effort to deliver up-to-date imagery provides the relief organizations and volunteers working around the clock with the data they need to better understand the current conditions on the ground,” continued Kawai. “We also hope these tools help our millions of users—both those in Japan and those closely watching and sending their support from all over the globe—to find useful information about the affected areas.” The 9.0 earthquake and subsequent earthquake killed more than 10,000 people. Google released satellite images revealing the devastation caused by the March 11 tsunami in Japan. The satellite images, which are available on Google Earth and Google Maps, show dramatically changed landscapes, including flooded cities and agricultural areas, buildings swept away by the tsunami surge, and smoke rising from ruined homes. Google says it is providing the high-resolution imagery to emergency crews and organizations working on the ground “We’re working to provide this data directly to response organizations on the ground to aid their efforts,” wrote Ryan Falor, of the Google Crisis Response team, on the official Google Blog. “We hope this new updated satellite imagery is valuable for them as well as everyone else following this situation to help illustrate the extent of the damage.” The March 11 earthquake that triggered the tsunami was recently upgraded to a 9.0, the strongest quake to hit Japan in modern times. It was the fifth strongest quake since record-keeping began in the late nineteenth century. The tsunami struck the eastern coast of Honshu island, moving it nearly 8 feet east. It caused heavy damage to infrastructure, including nuclear reactors, three of which partly melted down. More than 10,000 are feared dead. Malaysian loggers say Japan’s recovery from last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami will boost demand for rainforest timber, reports the Borneo Post. AmResearch, an investment research firm based in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, said logging companies that export plywood to Japan are poised to benefit from reconstruction. “We have contacted timber players, who are also unsure of the extent of damage stemming from the latest earthquake and the aftershocks,” AmResearch is quoted as saying. “One timber player rules out a ’30-40 per cent jump in exports’ to Japan – which mostly buys plywood from Malaysia – but expects a probable steady rise in demand from Japan to help in the reconstruction process, depending on the extent of the damage to buildings.” AmResearch told the Borneo Post Japan accounted for 46 percent of Sarawak’s total wood panel exports by volume from Jan 2010-Nov 2010. Hardwood prices have risen 19 percent over the past year. Ta Ann Holdings Bhd, one of the timber companies covered by AmResearch and one of the largest forestry firms operation in Sarawak, a state in Malaysian Borneo, exports 90 percent of its plywood production to Japan, according to AmResearch. Ta Ann has recently been criticized by environmental activists for its links to Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is the center of a corruption scandal. Activists say Taib and his family have acquired billions of dollars in overseas property holdings despite earning a modest government salary during his 30 years in power. At the same time, Sarawak’s…This article was originally published on Mongabay

Could the earthquake that triggered Japan’s devastating tsunami be linked to climate change? The short answer is probably not, but recent research suggests that changing climate has the potential to influence earthquakes in some parts of the world Scientists have shown that weight shifts caused by melting glaciers can trigger tectonic activity. As ice melts and waters runs off, tremendous amounts of weight are lifted off Earth’s crust. As the newly freed crust settles back to its original, pre-glacier shape, it can cause seismic plates to slip and stimulate volcanic activity, according to research into prehistoric earthquakes and volcanic activity. Approaching tsunami in Japan. Photo courtesy of Reuters. Map of the Senadai Earthquake 2011 Analyzing an 800,000-year record of volcanic activity in eastern California, Allen Glazner, a University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill geoscientist, found evidence that “peaks of volcanic activity occurred when ice was retreating globally,” as told to the Wall Street Jorunal’s Sharon Begley in 2006. “At first I thought it was crazy, but other scientists also found evidence that climate affects volcanism.” With Earth’s glaciers and ice gaps melting at increasing rates due to climate change, it is conceivable that we could see further impact from “isostatic rebound” in the Earth’s crust. Work by Patrick Wu, a professor of geophysics of the University of Calgary, suggests that past disappearance of ice “may still be contributing to quakes in eastern Canada.” “The pressure of the ice sheet suppresses earthquakes, so removing that load triggers them,” Wu told Begley. “Present-day…This article was originally published on Mongabay

A tsunami has killed more than 100 people in Indonesia following an earthquake on the same fault line that triggered the massive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The 7.7-magnitude earthquake sent 10-foot (3-meter) waves some 2,000 feet inland along parts of Mentawai Islands, off the Indian Ocean side of Sumatra. At least 113 are confirmed dead and 150 to 500 are reported missing, according to the Associated Press. Thousands more a homeless. The tsunami stirred up memories of the 2004 disaster, which killed over 230,000 people in 14 countries. The bulk of the victims were in Sumatra. The Mentawai Islands are a popular surf spot for foreign tourists. Tsunami alert lifted after strong earthquake in Indonesia Tsunami alert lifted after strong earthquake in Indonesia mongabay.com February 25, 2008 The tsunami warning following a 7.3 earthquake off the island in Sumatra, Indonesia has been lifted according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The U.S. Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) said the quake was centered 300 km northwest of Bengkulu and around 160 km southwest of Padang at a depth of 35 km. A 6.7 aftershock was recorded several hours later according to U.S.G.S. The same area was hit by an 8.4 quake in September last year. That tremor killed more than two dozen people and destroyed thousands of homes. The December 26, 2004 earthquake that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 230,000 was also centered off Sumatra. This article was originally published on Mongabay

Carbon for forests will help Aceh recover from war, tsunami Carbon for forests will help Aceh recover from war, tsunami mongabay.com September 18, 2007 Aceh Governor Irwandi Jusuf, a former rebel who was one of only 40 survivors after the December 2004 tsunami struck the prison where he was incarcerated, is now one of Indonesia’s leading supporters of forest conservation funded through carbon credits. Carbon credits through forest conservation will play an important role in Aceh’s recovery from decades of civil strife and the devastating 2004 tsunami, which left more than 167,000 people dead and 500,000 homeless in the Indonesia province, said Aceh governor Irwandi Jusuf in meeting in San Francisco. “The world needs more forests to store carbon,” he said. “Aceh can give you these forests. This is my obsession — the forests of Aceh need to be kept well.” In one of his first moves as governor, Irwandi in March declared a moratorium on all logging in the province, which had seen an up tick in timber cutting for tsunami reconstruction efforts. The move — met with derision by some in the Indonesian forestry sector — was welcomed by environmentalists and appears to have diminished legal and illegal logging, which is rampant in other parts of the country. Irwandi says that protecting Aceh’s forests — which are some of the largest blocks of rainforest remaining on the island of Sumatra — is his top priority for rebuilding the economy. The next step, he says, is to promote economic…This article was originally published on Mongabay
