Every year, scientists find hundreds of new animals, insects, plants and fungi. This year, researchers described a tiny new marsupial, a new Himalayan bat, an ancient tree, a bright blue butterfly, a parrot snake, and a fairy lantern plant, among others. &#8220;I think most people believe that we know most species on Earth,&#8221; Mario Moura, a professor at the Federal University of Paraíba in Brazil, told Mongabay, &#8220;but in the best-case scenario, we know 20% of Earth&#8217;s species.&#8221; Some estimate that only 10% of all the species on the planet have been described. Unfortunately, many species may be threatened with extinction before they’re even formally named — victims of human activities like development and climate change. 							<![CDATA[In forested and marshy wetlands near the Pasquotank River and Big Flatty Creek in North Carolina, a large landowner allegedly took liberties about a decade ago to install a kilometer of bulkheads and piles of sand. His actions violated federal laws protecting the waters in such areas, regulators claim. In January 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finally sued Robert White for altering his low-lying property. But White flipped the tables. He counter-sued and argued he should escape judgment thanks to Sackett v. EPA, a May 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision that radically reshaped the country’s Clean Water Act of 1972. The 5-4 decision means the federal government no longer regulates inland, non-tidal wetlands unless they have an obvious &#8220;continuous surface connection&#8221; to water that leads to larger, easily navigated waterways. 							<![CDATA[Oil exploration in the Republic of Congo’s Conkouati-Douli National Park threatens the local biodiversity, communities and environment, according to U.S.-based NGO Earth Insight. The Conkouati oil block was awarded by the ROC government to a Chinese company at the start of this year, just six weeks after the government had accepted $50 million from the European Union and the Bezos Fund to protect its forests, the latest in a series of similar international agreements. In a report published in June, Earth Insight, which works with affected communities to produce maps of at-risk areas of land and water, shows that the oil block occupies a large chunk of the protected area and the buffer zone of the park. This nature reserve is located &#8220;where the rainforest meets the ocean,&#8221; on the Atlantic coast at the western edge of the ROC. Conkouati-Douli covers an area of nearly 8,000 square kilometers (3,100 square miles), of which 46% is terrestrial area and the rest marine. It’s rich in biodiversity, home to western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) and Atlantic humpback dolphins (Sousa teuszii), as well as endangered central chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and other threatened species. Earth Insight&#8217;s report shows that the Conkouati oil exploration license covers an area of 1,600 km2 (620 mi2), of which 930 km2 (360 mi2) overlaps with the national park, covering more than a quarter of its terrestrial portion. These papyrus swamps, which form on the edges of Lake Victoria and other lakes and rivers in the region, are a haven for range-restricted birds and cichlid fish populations that have survived the introduction of commercially-valuable fish like Nile perch (Lates niloticus). A range of factors, including potential overharvesting of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) and the conversion of the swamps for agriculture and construction, threaten this remarkable ecosystem. Many coastal residents who rely on the swamps for their livelihoods have begun to voice concerns about the ecosystem’s future. This is especially so in Thailand, a country transited by some of Southeast Asia’s mightiest watercourses and whose growing national economy depends heavily on irrigated crops like rice. But as climate change continues to bring extreme weather events that exacerbate floods and droughts, Thailand’s farmers, communities and policymakers are facing the challenge of how to manage water sustainably. One promising avenue is leveraging nature’s own capacity to mitigate the consequences of extreme weather by encouraging natural processes in Thailand’s abundant rivers, floodplains and watershed forests. Such ecosystem-based adaptations or nature-based solutions are increasingly being promoted worldwide as ways to address the climate crisis while enhancing the resilience of biodiversity, ecosystems and communities. With the latest assessment of the Global Climate Risk Index ranking Thailand among the world’s top 10 countries most at risk of climate change, authorities and communities are trialing nature-based approaches in several parts of the country, and they’re increasingly reflected in national policy and planning instruments. “Some challenges, such as achieving the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals or dealing with climate uncertainty, cannot be fully addressed without nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based adaptation playing an important part,” Aksara Putthividiya, associate professor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, told Mongabay in an interview. But water was also a major talking point at COP27 and at many climate conferences before that, and it is consistently mentioned in regional treaties on conservation, such as the one passed by Amazonian countries earlier this month. Many environmental groups have said that, despite the constant rhetoric surrounding water, conservation projects still don’t give it enough attention. “Water, our planet’s lifeblood, and the ecosystems that store and supply it — rivers, lakes, wetlands and aquifers — have been consistently undervalued,” WWF said in a recent report. “This oversight exacts a profound toll: a water crisis that corrodes human well-being and jeopardizes our planet’s health.” The value of freshwater is hard to understate. Not only is it vital to biodiversity and combatting climate change, but it underpins global food security, the economy and public health. The WWF report estimates that the total value of water in 2021 was around $58 trillion, or 60% of the global GDP. That figure takes into account all the ways that society benefits from water, from consumption to soil fertility to carbon sequestration in swamps. Now, the company is bidding on two new oil blocks in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Local and international critics of its environmental record say it should not be allowed to expand. &#8220;Like most people here, I make my living from farming,” says Nicole Bila, a farmer and coordinator of a local NGO, Natural Resources and Development (RENAD). “I live next to Perenco&#8217;s operating area in Muanda. But to farm, I have to go a long way off, to where there are no oil wells, because the land is no longer fertile here.” Bila and her neighbours here in the Muanda region of the DRC’s Kongo Central province, grow cassava, maize, black-eyed peas and oil palm to feed their families and for the market. Many residents also hunt antelopes, bushpigs and cane rats in the area’s forests; others fish in the region’s rivers. Perenco has bid to acquire the rights to two nearby oil blocks, Nganzi and Yema II, made available for exploration in a high-profile auction launched by the DRC government a year ago. That was the only way they knew to protect themselves and their livestock from the tigers that would prowl this area on the fringes of Bardiya National Park, home to a third of Nepal’s endangered Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris). “Those few months were particularly difficult for us as the tigers attacked both livestock and humans,” says Dharma Prakash Tharu, a spokesperson for the municipality. Although local authorities don’t have official data for the number of cattle lost, residents say almost every household has lost some of its animals to the tigers. And it’s not just livestock: More than two dozen people have been killed by tigers in and around the national park in the past five years. As the global community applauds Nepal’s achievement of nearly tripling its tiger population in 12 years, human-tiger conflict has emerged as one of the biggest challenges to conserving the big cats, with researchers exploring the potential causes and solutions. Fish were so abundant, he recalls, that the villagers would smoke them, salt them, ferment them, even make fish crackers out of them. But the fish — predominantly baung and lais, catfish from the Hemibagrus and Kryptopterus genera, respectively — have become increasingly scarce as the water bodies in the region are degraded by the conversion of land for farming. “Nowadays, a lot of the people here make smoked fish from catfish that they raise in ponds,” says Lithan, identifying these farmed fish as patin (Pangasius spp.), lele (Clarias spp.) and even Nile tipalia (Oreochromis niloticus), an exotic species introduced here from Africa. “But the taste is different and there’s not much demand for it,” adds Lithan, who heads the farmers’ collective in the village of Muara Penimbung Ulu. “So this [fish-preserving] tradition could disappear as the freshwater fish are vanishing.”. Fueled by searing temperatures and months of drought, the flames quickly spread across the parched grasslands of Pantanal do Rio Negro State Park, melting together into a single, roaring wildfire. Data from the University of Maryland and U.S. space agency NASA, visualized on Global Forest Watch, show the fires started in May; within two months they had spread across some 450 square kilometers (174 square miles), reducing the vegetation in their path to ashes. In mid-July, a brigade of 30 firefighters and volunteers was dispatched to the park and the surrounding region to combat the fires, according to authorities. After days of fighting against angry flames and blustering winds, they succeeded in controlling the wildfire and halting its advance towards a nearby farm — but not before the blaze consumed some 10,062 hectares, nearly 13% of the park. Recent satellite images suggests fire activity resumed in early August, but was quelled as of August 14. “They did everything they could,” said Leonardo Pereira Gomes, strategy director at SOS Pantanal, a nonprofit that helped coordinate the combat of the flames. “But the soil is really dry, the rains haven’t come. 							<![CDATA[The world’s largest bank of the partially decomposed plant matter known as peat in the tropics is even more extensive than initially thought, according to a new study. The peatlands of the Congo Basin cover some 167,600 square kilometers (64,710 square miles) in the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a team of scientists reported July 21 in the journal Nature Geosciences. The new maps confirm that the area, sometimes called the Cuvette Centrale, is about the size of England and Wales combined, which is 15% bigger than the estimates from the original mapping of the area. “It’s a massive area. That’s for sure,” Bart Crezee, the study’s lead author and a postgraduate researcher at the University of Leeds in the U.K., told Mongabay. Little was known about the location, size and carbon contents of these peatlands deep in the world’s second-largest rainforest before a team of scientists shared their maps based on satellite imagery and extensive on-site fieldwork in a 2017 paper in the journal Nature. On their way, they’ve created swaths of wetlands, filled with carbon-packed peat bog. The Cree Indigenous people who have lived here for millennia call these peatlands Yehewin Aski, or “the Breathing Lands,” for they believe these wetlands act as the lungs of Mother Earth. &#8220;It&#8217;s such a watery landscape,&#8221; says Lorna Harris, a peatland ecosystem scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society Canada. &#8220;Every peatland is connected to every other peatland that is next to it, which is then connected to the streams, which go to the rivers downstream, all the way down to Hudson Bay and James Bay.&#8221; Peatlands cover only 3% of the planet&#8217;s land surface but store a considerable amount of terrestrial carbon thousands of years old. The auction aims to increase government revenue and boost domestic production of oil from its current modest level of 25,000 barrels per day. “This is a historic error that must be corrected immediately,” Irene Wabiwa Betoko said. Betoko, who leads the Congo Basin Forest Project at Greenpeace Africa, is sharply critical of the Congolese government&#8217;s choice to favor oil over the forest and human rights. In a statement, Greenpeace noted that “The Cuvette Centrale is a complex that is rich in peatlands, biodiversity and, according to 2017 estimates, contains around 30 gigatonnes of carbon, equivalent to 15 years of emissions from the United States.” Joe Eisen, executive director of Rainforest Foundation UK, fears that exploring for oil in these new blocks poses significant risks for the peatlands as well as the rights of hundreds of local and Indigenous communities. The extensive infrastructure required to prospect, drill for, and eventually transport oil could also lead to a cascade of deforestation as other land use changes take place around the roads and new settlements that accompany it. In the first half of December, Mongabay published a four-part series on the peatlands of the Congo Basin. Only in 2017 did a team of Congolese and British scientists discover that a sprawling wetland known as the Cuvette Centrale spanning the border between the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) actually contains a massive amount of peat. Their satellite mapping and ground truthing revealed that these peatlands cover an area the size of England and are the largest and most intact across the world’s tropics. But how did they get there? Why are they so important? And what does the future hold for the peatlands of the Congo Basin? Our series probes these questions and more in detail, tapping into the ongoing research and surveying the threats that could disrupt, degrade or even destroy this unique ecosystem. The muddy cores that Ian Lawson and his colleagues pull from the swampy peatlands of the Congo Basin might not look like much at first glance. Layers of clay and silt are interspersed here and there with bits of vaguely discernible plant material in varying states of decay mashed against each other. But like so many things in the natural world, these ordinary-looking samples hold far more than what’s visible to the naked eye. Indeed, says Lawson, they’re revelatory of a “beautiful natural succession” that’s occurred in this remote section of the Congo Basin rainforest. “You can see quite clearly grass and sedges at the bottom and the pioneer plants of open ground. And then later on, hardwood swamp comes in,” followed by an assortment of palm species, says Lawson, a paleoecologist based at the U.K.’s University of St. Andrews. “It becomes more diverse.” Lawson is part of a team that brought these expansive peatlands, roughly the size of England, to the attention of the world. In 2017, they published the findings of their field and remote-sensing investigations in the journal Nature. The logging concession moratorium signed in 2002 was supposed to shore up protections for forests in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Faced with widespread corruption in the timber sector, the country’s leaders agreed to stop awarding companies leases to harvest logs. The move didn’t stop all logging or deforestation, much of which has grown apace with the DRC’s rising population and clearance for more farmland, in the timber-rich nation. (Only Brazil has more tropical forest.) Nor did it halt the issuance of new concession licenses to foreign corporations. In one example, the government awarded thousands of square kilometers of forest to two Chinese timber companies in 2018. Greenpeace Africa figures that the DRC’s former environment minister allowed 40,000 square kilometers (more than 15,000 square miles) of “illegal” logging concessions during his tenure. As long as the DRC’s moratorium was in place, however, it seemed that some combination of strengthened forestry laws, bolstered protections for standing forest and the flow of financing for economic development connected to forest protection might help save the massive tracts of the DRC’s rainforests. More recently, members of the conservation community also hoped the moratorium would continue to envelop the huge, carbon-rich Cuvette Centrale peatland in the midst of that forest. The announcement came in mid-2019: A pool of oil lay deep beneath a swampy section of the northern Republic of Congo that could nearly quadruple the country’s output. It just seemed to be waiting there for the oil-rich country to tap into. Boosting production by nearly 1 million barrels per day would not only make one of Africa’s biggest oil producers an even more prominent player, but it could also inject much-needed funds into a struggling economy. Immediate questions arose about the validity of the claims, specifically about whether oil even existed there in such quantities, not to mention how drilling companies could profitably access such a remote area. (A 2015 report cast doubt on the presence of an “active petroleum system in the Congo Basin,” though the authors acknowledged the dearth of geological data on the region.) The news also jolted the conservation community. Overlying the purported pool is a massive repository of carbon-rich peat, organic matter that’s only partially broken down because waterlogging stifles the decomposition process. This peatland stretches over a floodplain straddling the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Central Africa, and scientists had recently discovered it was the largest deposit in the tropics. The notion seemed straightforward: A massive swamp in the Congo Basin relatively unknown to most of the world, apart from a few human communities and a bewildering array of wildlife, could be the ideal spot for a carbon-rich soil known as peat. Simon Lewis, a plant ecologist who had scouted the region and spoken with scientists there, had a strong suspicion about what lay just beneath the surface of this part of the world’s second-largest rainforest. So he got to work bringing together a team of Congolese and British scientists, including a doctoral student at the time named Greta Dargie. Early on, the team’s initial scans of satellite images looking at the topography, plant life and water dynamics in the area suggested this was a promising area for peat. The next step was to visit and plunge their tools into the earth in a series of make-or-break moments that would either prove the hunch correct or leave them with empty hands stained only with the dark soils of this remote swamp forest. They left the forest anything but emptyhanded and have since returned again and again with a growing team to pull back the curtain on what makes tropical peatlands work. Wildfires have been ravaging Pantanal Matogrossense National Park for months, invading the vast conservation area from all sides, according to local sources. The blazes have wreaked untold environmental havoc on this rich and complex ecosystem, scorching vegetation, killing animals and leaving countless others without habitat. “The extent of the damage is devastating,” said Vinicius Silgueiro, territorial intelligence coordinator at Instituto Centro de Vida (ICV), a Cuiaba-based sustainability nonprofit whose work has been focused on the Pantanal fires. “It&#8217;s an impact that is impossible to fully understand yet – but we know it has disrupted the equilibrium in a profound way.” Satellite data show huge areas of tree cover loss in Pantanal Matogrossense National Park following the latest spate of wide-ranging, out-of-control wildfires. Here at the 23rd United Nations Climate Summit, COP23, where European and African nations gave presentations over the past two weeks regarding the overlooked importance of peatlands for carbon sequestration, recent word of the huge finding on the border of DRC and the Republic of Congo made the rounds. “It’s phenomenal and it’s incredibly important,” said Bronson Griscom, director of forest science for The Nature Conservancy. “Most forests max out when it comes to carbon stocks. But wetlands and peatlands don’t max out. They keep storing carbon in the soil, decade after decade, century after century. These are the most carbon dense systems on earth. 							<![CDATA[A recent report by conservation NGO Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) is decrying what they say is Norwegian government complicity in funding a project they allege could result in the clearance of vast tracts of Congo rainforest and the release of billions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. But Norway&#8217;s Ministry of Climate and Environment says the report is overblown and the situation more complicated than RFUK contends. RFUK&#8217;s report spotlights a project funded through Norway&#8217;s Central Africa Forest Initiative (CAFI) that it says could increase the area comprised by logging concessions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by 20 million hectares. The project is part the French Development Agency (AFD)&#8217;s Sustainable Forest Management Programme. According to the report, the concessions stand to include more than 10,000 square kilometers of peat swamp. Peat is a kind of swampy soil made up of partially decayed organic matter that accumulates over hundreds, even thousands, of years. Often reaching more than four meters (13 feet) deep, areas of peat have been found as deep as 20 meters (65 feet). Naturally waterlogged, peat becomes highly combustible if it is drained and dries out. And if fire ignites on dried peatland, it can be extremely difficult to stop. During a forum hosted by economist Thomas Friedman at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, in January, Gore advised Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, to drop the plants. “The prime minister hasn’t asked me for advice… [but] there is a plan to build a new dirty coal plant in the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, the last remaining tiger preserve [in Bangladesh], thousands of people are demonstrating against it. My advice would be don’t build that dirty coal plant, but double down on a more rapid shift toward renewable energy,” Gore said. He added that until last year, Bangladesh was the “fastest deploying nation in all the world” of solar power, and that the country should continue to pursue renewable energies instead of coal power. Proposed coal power plants in the Sundarbans – the Rampal and Orion – have become a lightning rod in the country over the past few years, leading to mass demonstrations and clashes with police. 							<![CDATA[A vast area of peatlands in the swamp forests of the Congo Basin, known as the Cuvette Centrale peatlands, has just been mapped for the first time and shown to be the largest in all of the tropics. The peatlands, which weren’t even known to exist as recently as five years ago, were revealed to cover 145,500 square kilometers (or more than 56,000 square miles), an area larger than England, and to sequester some 30 billion metric tons of carbon. That makes them one of the most carbon-rich ecosystems on Earth, as well, according to the researchers who made the discovery and subsequently mapped the peatlands. Professor Simon Lewis and Dr. Greta Dargie, who are both affiliated with the University of Leeds and University College London in the UK, first discovered the peatlands’ existence while doing fieldwork in the region in 2012. Lewis and Dargie were also the co-lead authors of a study published in the journal Nature earlier this month that details their use of core samples to determine the presence and depth of peat soil in the region. The average depth of the Cuvette Centrale peatlands was found to be 2.4 meters (about 7.9 feet), but at its deepest the peat soil reaches 5.9 meters (a little over 19 feet), roughly the height of a two-story building. “Our 2012 discovery of the Congo Basin peat gave us just enough insight to refine our searches,” Dargie said in a statement. That reaction comes on top of a steep dive in the Indonesian rupiah and a commodity market rout that has hit some of the country&#8217;s biggest exports, including oil, coal, palm oil, and rubber. These are dark days – literally and figuratively – for Indonesia. Yet Indonesia&#8217;s public health crisis and ecological calamity presents President Joko Widodo – popularly known as Jokowi – with an opportunity to finally enact reforms in the forest and plantation sectors his predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono failed to implement. Jokowi has both the domestic support from citizens and business leaders to meaningfully adopt and implement policies that shift Indonesia away from practices that have wrecked the country&#8217;s forests and peatlands, heightened social conflict, eroded local food security, and made the country one of the world&#8217;s largest carbon polluters. However, a recent study in Sumatra&#8217;s Harapan rainforest details not only the ecological benefits, but rather the necessity, of improving artificial wetlands found along waterways in this rainforest ecosystem. Tropical forest streams across Southeast Asia are in a degraded state, especially where obstructed by logging roads, creating artificial ponds and swamps. The improvement of the quality of those artificial wetlands could help bolster dwindling plant and wildlife populations, and enhance local biodiversity says a new study published in mongabay.com&#8217;s open-access Tropical Conservation Science. The Harapan ecosystem, where the case study was conducted, encompasses 247,100 acres (100,000 hectares) of lowland rainforest. The ecosystem covers four watersheds and about 466 miles (750 kilometers) of river, too. It includes 175 artificial ponds and swamps created by logging road networks over the last 30 to 40 years. The researchers describe the condition of the artificial ponds and swamps associated with roads in the Harapan rainforest, propose a set of restoration techniques to improve their conservation value, and suggest species suitable for restoration activities. Although tropical alluvial swamps generally account for less biodiversity than surrounding rainforest, they provide crucial resources to a variety of species, including swamp tree species, amphibians that require flowing streams or standing water for reproduction, and large vertebrates &#8212; including elephants and tapirs &#8212; who commonly visit ponds for drinking water or to cool themselves. While peatlands in Southeast Asia &#8212; namely Sumatra, Borneo, and New Guinea &#8212; are best known to tropical ecologists, they are also found in other parts of the world, including the Amazon. The new research looks specifically at an area known as the Pastaza-Marañón foreland basin (PMFB), which lies in northwest Peru. Using field data and satellite imagery, the international team of researchers assessed the extent and carbon storage in the basin. They found that the Pastaza-Marañón peatland covers some 36,000 square kilometers &#8212; an area the size of Taiwan &#8212; and stores 3.1 billion tons of carbon, or half of Peru&#8217;s aboveground forest carbon stock. More than two-thirds of that carbon is found within the area&#8217;s palm swamps, but so-called &#8220;pole forests&#8221; are the champions of carbon storage on per-unit-area basis, averaging nearly 1,400 metric tons of carbon per hectare. That&#8217;s more than ten times what a recent survey found in nearby primary rainforests. Indonesia’s new president, Joko Widodo (or Jokowi, as he’s popularly called) spent half his 11-minute inaugural address thanking God, his partisans and the citizenry at large. For the rest of the speech he talked about oceans. “The seas, the bays, and the straits are the future of our civilization,” he declared, which we have ”too long turned our backs on.&#8221; He urged his people now “to face the waves [and] get on board the ship of the Republic of Indonesia,” with himself as captain. Was this just rhetorical flourish, or does it portend a new seriousness about maritime management? Indonesia is home to the world’s longest coastline and two-thirds of global coral and fish diversity. But stewardship of these resources has been lax. It was only 13 years ago that Indonesia got around to establishing its Fisheries and Marine Affairs Ministry, one of the country’s youngest. Yet foreign and domestic fish poaching is still rampant, as is underreported fish catch. And fisheries only account for 2 percent of the country’s GDP, despite employing 20 percent of the population. 							<![CDATA[Peat swamp in Malaysian Borneo Long considered an unproductive hindrance to growth and development, peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia have been systematically cleared, drained and burned away to make room plantations and construction. Now, as alternating cycles of fires and flood create larger development problems, while greenhouse gas emissions skyrocket, it is time to take a closer look at peat, and understand why clearing it is at best a very bad idea. What is a tropical peat swamp forest? Peat swamp forests form in areas where saturated soils or frequent flooding prevent organic material from fully decomposing. As this organic material slowly accumulates, it retains even more water through capillary action: up to 13 times its weight. Acting as a giant sponge that holds in the moisture, peat swamps eventually form a dome of wet organic material that can rise above the surrounding flood levels. It takes thousands of years for peatlands to form, with organic matter accumulating at 0.5 – 2 mm per year (about the thickness of a quarter). Peat layers over 4 meters (13 feet) are common, while depths of up to 20 meters (65 feet) have been reported. Illustration showing degradation of tropical peatlands. Sigit In the swampy peatlands of Basilam Baru in Sumatra&#8217;s Riau Province a conflict between a community and a woodpulp company is illustrating some of the intractable challenges of conserving forests and addressing deforestation in Indonesia. On first glance the story seems depressingly familiar. One actor wants to preserve the forest, which serves as critical habitat for endangered Sumatran tigers and clouded leopards. The other wants to clear it for a plantation. But in this case, the roles are reversed: the forestry company is pushing to protect the forest under Asia Pulp &amp; Paper&#8217;s new forest conservation policy, while the local community aims to chop it down to plant rubber trees. The conflict revolves around the status of 700 hectares of peat forest that lies with in a 35,000 hectare concession managed by APP supplier PT. Suntara Gajapati (SGP). Like many concessions in remote parts of Indonesia, GSP&#8217;s license was granted with little thought for local inhabitants and has since been widely encroached. By 2009 nearly a third of the concession area was claimed by communities, according to an audit by Ekologika, an Indonesian consultancy. In a precedent-setting case, an Indonesian court has found a palm oil company guilty of violating environmental laws and ordered it to pay $30 million in fines and reparations for clearing an area of protected peat forest that is a stronghold for endangered orangutans in Indonesia&#8217;s Aceh Province. In a ruling handed down Wednesday, the Meulaboh district court concluded that PT Kallista Alam illegally cleared and burned forest within the the protected Tripa peat swamp in northwestern Sumatra. Senior Judge Rahmawati SH ordered the company to pay 114.3 billion rupiah ($9.4 million) in compensation and 251.7 billion rupiah ($20.6 million) to restore damaged areas. The case was seen as a test of Indonesia&#8217;s appetite for enforcing a nationwide moratorium on new plantation and logging concessions across millions of hectares of rainforests and peatlands. Kallista Alam&#8217;s activities were particularly brazen, appearing to violate the moratorium, an earlier presidential decree on conversion of deep peat areas, and the sanctity of a high conservation value area known for its orangutan population. Kallista Alam also moved forward with forest clearing without securing proper permits or sign-off from some nearby communities. Given the circumstances, the clearing sparked international outrage with more than 1.5 million people signing various online petitions calling for greater protection of Aceh&#8217;s forests, including opposing a proposal to remove large blocks of tiger and orangutan habitat from protection. Gary Schmelz discusses at length the conservation history of how Florida conserved the Everglades, Big Cypress Swamp and Ten Thousand Island National Wildlife Refuge. 							<![CDATA[Australia is ending its major forest restoration project in Indonesian Borneo, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. Launched during the peak of excitement about the potential of forest conservation to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in 2007, the $47 million initiative aimed to restore 200,000 hectares of peatland that had been drained for the ill-conceived mega-rice project in the mid-1990s. The project, known as the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP), would have re-flooded that area by blocking off drainage canals, planted some 100 million trees, and protected 70,000 hectares of carbon-dense peat forest. It expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 700 million metric tons over 30 years. But the project faced challenges from the start due to approval delays and objections from local communities and officials. KFCP was eventually scaled back to just 10 percent of its original target in terms of the area to be reflooded. Meanwhile a sister $30 million project in Sumatra was canceled completely.
