The study, published Dec. 15 in the journal Communications Earth &amp; Environment, found that sea levels across the continent have risen four times faster since 2010, on average, than they had in the 1990s. The primary reason was additional water mass from polar melt, rather than other phenomena that can cause sea-level rise, the authors found. “When you have ice-free summer [at high latitudes], it means that the water went somewhere,” Franck Ghomsi, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba in Canada and lead author of the study, told Mongabay. “The glacier moved from ice to water, and it [water] started migrating. And it is the tropics [that] are now … getting this outflow of water.” The impacts include flooding, erosion of coastal land, displacement of coastal communities and intrusion of salty seawater into freshwater drinking sources. People in Africa are responsible for only a tiny proportion of human-caused global warming and yet face severe effects from the resulting sea-level rise, said Ghomsi, who is from Cameroon, calling this a “climate injustice.” He said that emissions from countries in the Global North are having a “huge impact” on countries in the Global South, including in Africa. Now, as greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, some polar researchers are investigating a radical geoengineering plan to install seabed curtains that could protect Thwaites from melting down. Thwaites Glacier is rapidly shedding ice as the world warms from climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels. Thwaites is losing about 50 billion metric tons of ice every year, contributing to about 4% of present-day sea-level rise worldwide. But if Thwaites were to melt down entirely, it could raise the average global sea level by more than 0.6 meters (2 feet) over the next few centuries. This would inundate coastal cities around the world and force hundreds of millions of people to migrate. Some scientists think it could be even worse. Thwaites may act as a natural dam for the rest of ice contained within West Antarctica. If it collapses, it could destabilize other glaciers, potentially pushing global sea level rise to as high as 3 m (10 ft). That’s far from a record low and represents a recovery, in some ways, from where things stood earlier this year. At the winter maximum in March 2025, the Arctic ice was in bad shape. That’s the month in which sea ice, encouraged by freezing temperatures and 24-7 darkness, annually reaches its greatest extent. Ice cover in the region then barely topped 14.3 million square kilometers (5.5 million square miles) — the smallest extent at the winter maximum observed in the 47-year satellite record, and more than 1 million km2 (386,000 mi2) below the 1981 to 2010 average winter maximum. Much of 2025 followed a similar downward sloping path; throughout June and into early August, Arctic sea ice cover was tracking close to, if not at, a record low for the time of year. With less sea ice to reflect solar radiation, and more open ocean to absorb and store heat, the polar cooling system that helps protect the planet from higher temperatures will increasingly become dysfunctional. Recent climate models predict daunting scenarios of irreversible ecosystem change at Earth’s poles, with those drastic changes in polar regions rippling out to impact the rest of the world. “The Arctic and the Antarctic are really different systems, but anthropogenic global warming is the overall factor that’s leading to less ice in the north and the south,” said Walt Meier, an NSIDC senior research scientist. In a recent landmark report, marking the World Day for Glaciers, UNESCO is ringing alarm bells: Cryosphere melt is putting freshwater accessibility at risk for more than one billion people living in mountainous regions and a further two billion living downstream as glaciers and snowpacks melt away and decline; most of those individuals live in developing countries. That same report finds that cryosphere melt is endangering two-thirds of irrigated agriculture across the globe. “The melting and the changes in the cryosphere are a reality and we need to really start taking action,” Abou Amani, director of the Division of Water Sciences and secretary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, tells Mongabay in an interview. That’s a stark warning, but only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to gauging the cryosphere’s importance to human wellbeing and evaluating potential harms as it shrinks away. Instead, what they found has left them more mystified than ever. The first detailed maps from the underside of the Doston Ice Shelf in Antarctica revealed patterns that couldn’t be explained by existing models. On one side of the ice shelf, areas where the ice had melted were shaped like teardrops. The other side, however, resembled landscapes on ice. “When we saw the first teardrop, we thought ‘Oh, that’s a really funny shape,’ but then we saw more and more and they were everywhere in the western side,” Wåhlin, an oceanographer and professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, told Mongabay in a video interview. On the eastern side, Wåhlin said it was much more dramatic, with “thick shapes carved into the ice that looked a little bit like the Grand Canyon where the water had eaten away into the ice.” A study co-authored by Wåhlin and published in the journal Science Advances documents how the team developed and deployed the autonomous underwater vehicle that traveled more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) back and forth under the Doston Ice Shelf over the course of 27 days in 2022. 							<![CDATA[Human actions are rapidly changing the world’s oceans, whether through overfishing, pollution or coastal development. But among the most intense pressures placed on the seas right now is humanity’s ongoing burning of fossil fuels, pumping dangerous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which in turn has pushed sea temperatures to record levels. The global ocean, which covers 70% of the planet’s surface, currently absorbs 90% of the solar heat trapped by humanity’s carbon emissions. This greatly moderates rising atmospheric temperatures and helps temper the intensity of the climate crisis. Put another way, the world would be a lot hotter by now if the ocean wasn’t taking in all this heat. But the ocean’s absorption of this anthropogenic heat still has serious consequences. One clear result has been an unprecedented rise in global sea temperatures, which has placed strains on marine life and biological processes, and increased extreme weather on land. Rising ocean temperatures are also resulting in an escalation in marine heat waves, placing even more pressure on marine organisms and ecosystems already struggling to cope with other changes brought on by fossil fuel burning, such as ocean acidification, along with other human stressors. Marine heat waves, defined as events where ocean temperatures rise to extreme levels and hold steady for at least five days, are becoming increasingly common as human-induced climate change fuels global warming. The ocean absorbs an enormous amount of human-made heat. The sixth assessment report of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that between 1971 and 2018, the sea took in about 396 zettajoules of heat, equivalent to the energy in about 25 billion Hiroshima atomic bombs. This heat absorption has resulted in a general warming of the global ocean. An analysis suggested that 2022 was the hottest year on record for the ocean. With the current El Niño climate pattern playing out this year, 2023 is predicted to be even hotter. While marine heat waves can impact any part of the ocean, certain areas have experienced more intense marine heat waves than others. For instance, one of the worst marine heat waves on record, known as “The Blob,” occurred in the northern Pacific Ocean between 2015 and 2016, which disrupted the entire food web across the region. More recently, the waters around the U.K. and Europe experienced temperatures as high as 5° Celsius (9° Fahrenheit) above normal, which is the warmest this region has experienced in 170 years. Instead, they ended up piloting a way to use existing undersea fiber-optic cables in the Arctic to track the extent of sea ice and monitor how it’s changing. “We were not at all expecting to be able to see sea ice changes clearly in the data,” Peña Castro, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New Mexico, told Mongabay in a video interview. In a study published in August in the journal The Seismic Record, Peña Castro and his colleagues described how they monitored changes in sea ice in the Beaufort Sea with the help of “ambient noise recorded by fiber-optic sensing technology deployed in an Arctic shallow marine seafloor environment.” While the findings were based on research at one location, they say the method could potentially be scaled up at other sites with existing fiber-optic cables. Studying how frozen seawater is changing is essential to measuring the impacts of global warming. Sea ice is usually monitored with the help of satellite imagery. However, the lack of high-resolution images often makes it difficult to gauge the reality in detail. This includes Antarctica — a region that has long seemed behind the curve when it comes to warming. But how radically or fast the south polar region’s atmosphere, oceans, ice and land will alter is hard to say. In January, data compiled by the World Meteorological Organization revealed the last eight years as the hottest on record globally. On the Antarctic Plateau, the coldest place on the planet, the Concordia Research station hit its highest temperature reading ever in early 2022 at -12.2 degrees Celsius (10.04 degrees Fahrenheit), while Antarctic sea ice shrank the same year to its smallest extent since recordkeeping began, to 1.92 million square kilometers (741,000 square miles). That’s an alarming record — but 2023 beat it, at 1.79 million km2 (691,000 mi2). This is potentially bad news for humanity: The White Continent, which holds 90% of the world’s ice, plays a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate. In an email to Mongabay, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) underlined the “disproportionate” influence the poles have on climate, stressing the contrast between the reflective properties of large white, ice-covered areas (which send the sun’s heat back into space) and the surrounding dark sea surface (which absorbs the sun’s heat, adding to global warming). 							<![CDATA[As Arctic sea ice reached a total winter maximum coverage that is again far below average, research has revealed how this ice is vulnerable to extreme weather arriving from more southerly parts of the globe — and how it might never recover. Arctic sea ice, which expands through the fall and winter, reached an annual maximum extent of 14.62 million square kilometers (5.64 million square miles) on March 6, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). That means Arctic sea ice is starting the summer melt season more than a million square kilometers below average. The maximum, which came almost a week earlier than normal, is the fifth-lowest in the 45-year satellite record. Antarctic sea ice extent has been in an even sorrier state, setting a record melt season low in February for the second year in a row, in what may be a sign that global warming will soon impact that polar system just as it&#8217;s been impacting Arctic sea ice. The combined sea ice extent around both poles hit a record low in January. While ice reflects most solar radiation, open water absorbs it, accelerating global warming in what is known as the ice-albedo feedback. With warmer El Niño conditions expected to return later this year, significantly raising global temperature, the north polar ice cap could break its own record for lowest extent this fall. Then they drilled into the ice sheet with special equipment and packed the extracted cores into insulated boxes that they loaded into the plane’s cargo hold. “It&#8217;s tedious work and it&#8217;s difficult to get to these places,” says Bo Møllesøe Vinther, a physicist at the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark, who was involved in similar expeditions. “The weather has to be very good for you in order to be able to do this.” Back at the lab, a team of scientists analyzed the isotopic composition of the ice cores to help reconstruct climate conditions on the ice sheets over the last millennium — from the year 1000 to 2011. In a new study published in Nature, they contend that the years between 2001 and 2011 were the warmest during this thousand-year period, and that the region is now 1.5° Celsius (2.7° Fahrenheit) warmer than the long-term average. As the Greenland ice sheet melts—2022 is the 26th year in a row that Greenland lost more ice than it gained—it’s sloughing off enormous volumes of sediment. That sediment could in turn be extracted to meet the voracious global appetite for sand. A recent study by researchers at McGill University and the University of Greenland, published in the journal Nature Sustainability, found that the vast majority of Greenlandic adults—eight out of ten surveyed—were in favor of extracting and exporting sand, if the projects doing so were under Greenlandic control. The results surprised researchers, given Greenlanders’ at-times fierce opposition to mining projects. But it suggests that in sand mining, there’s a model for how Greenland can economically adapt to climate change, while moving closer to the economic independence from Denmark that many Greenlanders support. However, the environmental consequences are uncertain and an environmental impact assessment has not yet been done. Impacts could include sucking sand off the substrate and increasing shipping traffic, as well as the introduction of non-native species via the ballast water of ships. There are 19 recognized subpopulations of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) living throughout the Arctic, including the subpopulation found living on the eastern coast of Greenland. But on the southeastern edge of the island, Laidre and her colleagues found a group of several hundred polar bears that were both behaviorally and genetically unique. While most polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt seals, the southeast Greenland polar bears had found ways to hunt using pieces of ice that had broken off from glaciers. “We were not expecting to identify a unique group like we found in the southeast,” Laidre, a polar bear expert at the University of Washington and Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, told Mongabay in an email. But mangroves sitting at least 170 kilometers (106 miles) inland? That seemed unlikely. “You probably got your botanical identification wrong because it doesn&#8217;t seem plausible that mangroves are growing in a river with freshwater at such a distance from the coast,” Ezcurra, a professor of ecology at the University of California, Riverside, told Burelo-Ramos. But a confident Burelo-Ramos pushed back, respectfully telling Ezcurra, “I&#8217;m a good taxonomist. I know my plants, and this is red mangrove.&#8221; A tall red mangrove provides habitat to various epiphytic cacti and orchid species, creating an ecosystem unique in the world. Sure enough, on a trip to visit the San Pedro Mártir with his daughters, he found red mangrove, which, unlike other mangrove species that grow in the Gulf of Mexico, can take up residence in habitats free of salt, at least the sodium chloride variety pervasive in the world’s oceans. That’s when, for the first time in history, record warmth melted the Northwest Passage, nearly opening it to shipping; turned a portion of the East Siberian Sea the size of Mexico into open ocean; and shrank the polar ice cap to a size never before reached so early in the March-to-September melt season, as documented by satellite since 1979. Walt Meier, a senior researcher at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Colorado, was following the satellite images. “You’re watching and it’s neck and neck. Is it going to make it? Is it not going to make it? It’s like, we’re going to break this [annual low sea ice extent] record in August if it keeps up like this.” By mid-September, when the melting had halted and the Arctic Ocean had begun its annual refreeze, the ice cap was 22% smaller than it had historically ever been. “We had set a record in 2002, 2005 before that,” says Meier. “Every couple of years we&#8217;ve kind of been dropping just a little bit lower than anywhere we had been before. The 2009 Planetary Boundaries framework proposed nine key Earth System processes and described tipping points brought on by human exploitation beyond which the system could shift irreversibly into a new climatic state — one in which human civilizations would find it difficult to survive. In the present study, researchers at the University of Exeter and the U.K. Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, both in the United Kingdom, developed simple mathematical models of four environmental elements in the Earth System that are fairly well understood: melting of polar ice caps, disruption of the Atlantic Meridional Ocean Circulation (AMOC), Amazon forest dieback, and disruption of India’s summer monsoon cycle. Little auks typically spend summers in their breeding grounds closer to the North Pole, and then fly southward to the North Atlantic in the winter. &#8220;There are clearly new strategies for migratory birds, and those new pathways will change the shape of the global population,&#8221; Clairbaux, a doctoral student at France’s University of Montpellier, told Mongabay. The report focuses on the benefits of taking action to limit global warming — and the costs of delaying that action — for the world’s oceans and cryosphere (the parts of Earth&#8217;s surface that are frozen, such as ice sheets and frozen ground). It is the work of more than 100 authors from 36 countries who assessed 7,000 scientific publications to assemble the latest scientific findings on the current and future impacts of global climate change. “The world’s ocean and cryosphere have been ‘taking the heat’ from climate change for decades, and consequences for nature and humanity are sweeping and severe,” Ko Barrett, Vice-Chair of the IPCC, said in a statement. “The rapid changes to the ocean and the frozen parts of our planet are forcing people from coastal cities to remote Arctic communities to fundamentally alter their ways of life.” For instance, as glaciers, snow, ice, and permafrost melt they are increasing the risks to the 670 million humans who live in mountainous regions from avalanches, floods, landslides, and rockfalls. The team compared the buildup of snow on the Antarctic Ice Sheet with the amount of ice that glaciers slough off into the Southern Ocean between 1979 and 2017 using aerial photographs, radar measurements taken from space and Landsat satellite imagery. The results revealed that Antarctica’s ice is melting far more quickly today than in the past. In roughly the first decade that the researchers looked at, up through 1990, the continent lost 40 billion metric tons (44 billion tons) each year. Between 2009 and 2017, that figure jumped to 252 billion metric tons (278 tons) annually. The team also tried to connect sea level rise during the study period with melting at different locations. The newly created iceberg was massive, about the size of the US state of Delaware, but it did not contribute to rising sea levels, as it was already floating on the ocean’s surface before it became detached from the larger body of ice. But many of the glaciers on the continent are melting, as well, and because they’re on land, the runoff from that melting ice does cause Earth’s sea levels to rise — and we now have one of the most robust estimates ever of just how much that melting glacial ice in the Antarctic is contributing to sea level rise. According to new research, ice-melt in Antarctica has caused global sea levels to rise by as much as 7.6 millimeters since 1992 — and about 40 percent of that, some 3 millimeters, came in just the past five years. That’s the finding of a major climate assessment called the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE), the results of which were published in the journal Nature last week. Andrew Shepherd of the UK’s University of Leeds and Erik Ivins of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the US state of California led a team of 84 scientists from 44 international organizations that used 24 different satellite surveys to produce the assessment. Unable to put boots on the ground due to the ice shelf’s remote location, harsh weather and safety concerns, scientists relied on satellite imagery and the occasional fly-over to survey the rift in the months leading up to the calving. The lack of up-close surveillance, along with complex ice shelf dynamics, didn’t allow researchers to pinpoint the precise calving date, with Wednesday’s event very much expected, but coming as a bit of a surprise. This week two landmark studies revealed that West Antarctica&#8217;s ice sheet is in a state of seemingly inevitable collapse linked to climate change. The slow-motion collapse would by itself eventually lead to a rise in global levels of 3.6-4.5 meters (12-15 feet), overrunning many of the world&#8217;s islands, low-lying areas, and coastal cities. The only silver lining is that scientists conservatively estimate that the collapse could take 200-1,000 years. &#8220;There&#8217;s been a lot of speculation about the stability of marine ice sheets, and many scientists suspected that this kind of behavior is under way,&#8221; said Ian Joughin, a glaciologist with the University of Wisconsin, who co-authored a study in Science focusing on a key glacier in the region, Thwaites Glacier. The team found that Thwaites Glacier is in a state of rapid retreat, which likely cannot be halted. By itself, the Thwaites Glacier would raise global sea levels by almost 2 feet; however, the Thwaites Glacier is also the stop gap to the much larger West Antarctica ice sheet. Once the Thwaites Glacier is gone, nothing will prevent the full ice sheet from melting, according to researchers, adding another 10-13 feet. So, imagine the surprise of geologists in Antarctica when they discovered a mass of sea anemones hanging upside from the underside of the Ross Ice Shelf like a village of wispy ghosts. The researchers weren&#8217;t even there to discover new life, but to learn about south pole currents through the Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) Program via a remotely-operated undersea robot. &#8220;When we looked up at the bottom of the ice shelf, there they were,&#8221; says Frank Rack, executive director of ANDRILL, who calls the discovery &#8220;total serendipity.&#8221; The scientists have named the new upside down anemones Edwardsiella andrillae after the program. A massive team of scientists have used multiple methods to provide the best assessment yet of ice loss at the world&#8217;s poles, including Greenland and a number of Antarctic ice sheets. Their findings&#8212;that all major ice sheets are shrinking but one; that ice loss is speeding up; and that this is contributing to the rise in sea levels&#8212;add more evidence to the real-time impacts from global climate change. Melting ice sheets at the poles have raised sea levels 11.1 millimeters, or about 20 percent of observed sea level rise, in the past twenty years, according to the landmark study in Science. &#8220;It provides a simpler picture,&#8221; said co-author Benjamin Smith, a research scientist at the UW&#8217;s Applied Physics Laboratory. &#8220;In the 1990s, not very much was happening. Sometime around 1999, the ice sheets started losing more mass, and probably have been losing mass more rapidly over time since then.&#8221; The rate of ice loss in Greenland has jumped five-fold over the past two decades, while changes in Antarctica have been more variable, but still trend toward total and increasing ice loss. Only East Antarctica may be seeing some gain in ice, but the estimated range could also mean the ice sheet there is either stable or melting a little. By August 8th, nearly a month before cooler weather usually sets in around the world&#8217;s largest island, the island toppled the past record set in 2010. &#8220;With more yet to come in August, this year&#8217;s overall melting will fall way above the old records. That&#8217;s a goliath year&#8212;the greatest melt since satellite recording began in 1979,&#8221; said Earth and atmospheric scientist Marco Tedesco in a press release. Tedesco measures the melt in Greenland using microwave satellite sensors, whereby he&#8217;s able to track both the total area melting and the number of days. Analysis of data from three satellites detected the record melting on July 12. The extent was such Son Nghiem of NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory initially questioned the results. “This was so extraordinary that at first I questioned the result,” said Nghiem. “Was this real or was it due to a data error?” Nghiem&#8217;s observations were subsequently confirmed by Dorothy Hall from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Thomas Mote of the University of Georgia and Marco Tedesco of the City University of New York also confirmed the melt. NASA said the melt may by the most severe since 1889. &#8220;Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years,&#8221; said Lora Koenig, a NASA scientist and member of the team analyzing the satellite data. &#8220;With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time. But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome.&#8221; Every summer a portion of the surface of the Greenland ice sheet melts and runs off into the ocean or quickly refreezes depending the elevation and location of the melt. Marshall, Canada Research Chair in Climate Change, University of Calgary, is an excellent book because it summarizes leading scientific research into easily accessible chapters each one on a different component of the cryosphere. The cryosphere, which incorporates the Earth&#8217;s snow and ice mass including seasonal snow, permafrost (both land-based permafrost and below water permafrost), river and lake ice, sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets, and ice shelves, is intrinsically related to global climate change. Hence, understanding how the cryosphere interacts with and is at risk because of climate change and its greenhouse gases is fundamental to developing effective policy mechanisms that mitigate climate change. The Cryosphere contains clear and concise chapters each on snow and ice material properties and thermodynamics; different types precipitation including seasonal snow, freshwater ice, sea ice, permafrost, glaciers and ice sheets; and summary chapters the cryosphere&#8217;s climate processes and on a global climate change impacted Earth. Each chapter includes definitive easy to follow mathematical equations, illustrative examples, anecdotes, and notes for further reference. The book also contains a helpful glossary. For example, roughly 35 percent of the Earth&#8217;s geography experiences freezing points seasonally throughout the year. And these freezing points globally impact the cryosphere resulting in a tight feedback loop between the cryosphere and temperatures associated with global warming. This is an example of the critical importance of the cryosphere on a global climate change impacted Earth. The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has announced that they expect 2011 to be the warmest La Niña year since record keeping began in 1850. The opposite of El Nino, a La Niña event causes general cooling in global temperatures. &#8220;Despite La Niña, it was a very, very warm year to the point that it is the warmest decade on record,&#8221; explained WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud during a press briefing in Geneva. Even with the cooling impact of La Niña, this year is on track to becoming the 10th warmest yet. In fact, the 13 warmest years on record have all occurred in the last 15 years with the 2000s being the warmest decade to date. &#8220;Our science is solid and it proves unequivocally that the world is warming and that this warming is due to human activities,&#8221; Jarraud said. The effects of this heat are being felt far-and-wide. This year saw the Arctic&#8217;s sea ice hit its lowest volume on record and have its second lowest extent. Ice shelves in Canada have halved in the last six years. 							<![CDATA[After the Arctic sea ice extent hit its second lowest size on record this summer&#8212;or lowest (depending on the source)&#8212;comes another climate change shocker: in the past six years Canada&#8217;s millennia-old ice shelves have shed nearly half their size. One ice shelf&#8212;the Serson shelf&#8212;is almost entirely gone, while another&#8212;the Ward Hunt shelf&#8212;has split into two distinct shelves. The ice shelves have lost 3 billion tons in this year alone. &#8220;These unique and massive geographical features that we consider to be part of the map of Canada are disappearing and they won’t come back,&#8221; Derek Mueller, a researcher with Carleton University, says in a press release. Mueller attributes the ice loss to warming temperatures, while cracks in their foundations expose them to open water, quickening the melt. The Serson ice shelf measured 120 square kilometers until it split in two in 2008. Today the two parts equal only 32 square kilometers. The Ward Hunt shelf split into two this summer for the first time, while the Ellesmere Island ice shelves have shed 480 square kilometers of ice in six years. &#8220;The ice shelves were formed and sustained in a different climate than what we have now. As they disappear, it implies we are returning to conditions unseen in the Arctic for thousands of years,&#8221; Mueller adds.
