The Indonesian economist-turned-entrepreneur has won UCLA’s 2025 Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award for building a “farm-to-closet” supply chain—a system that regenerates land, restores heritage craft, and empowers rural women. Riadini-Flesch founded SukkhaCitta after an encounter that reshaped her view of progress. As a young economist from Jakarta, she once equated development with growth—an upward line without end. That illusion unraveled when she visited a village where women labored for weeks over textiles only to earn a few dollars, their skin and lungs scarred by synthetic dyes. “It burns my hands, my eyes, my lungs,” one woman told her. The remark revealed what Riadini-Flesch calls “the true cost of convenience.” SukkhaCitta set out to invert that logic. Instead of sprawling factories, production takes place in courtyards and small farms across Java, Bali, Flores, and West Timor. Cotton is grown on mixed plots that regenerate the soil; dyes come from indigo and mahogany leaves; fabrics are woven on handlooms. The enterprise has restored more than 120 acres of degraded land, kept five million liters of toxic dye wastewater out of rivers, and raised women’s incomes by 60 percent on average. The environmental benefits are measurable, but the social ones may matter more. Through decentralized Rumah SukkhaCitta schools, women learn ecological literacy, entrepreneurship, and heritage techniques side by side. Guided less by ideology than by pragmatism, he insists that “science is science and it’s fact-based,” and that durable solutions come from setting clear goals, gathering evidence, and persisting until results are visible. Growing up in northern California and later raising a family in Los Angeles, he was never far from the state’s landscapes—from Lake Tahoe’s ski slopes to Santa Monica Bay. “I’m also a swimmer,” he says, recalling the moment when his love of the ocean turned into action. “I wanted the bay to be super clean because I swam there.” That instinct brought him to Heal the Bay two decades ago, where he joined the board under the leadership of Mark Gold. His path runs from Delhi’s informal settlements to Banda Aceh after the 2004 tsunami to WRI’s global platform, where he argues that climate, nature, and development rise or fall together. The point, he says, is not elegant plans but outcomes that improve daily life. “Leadership isn’t about hierarchy or control, but about moral purpose, trust and collaboration.” Aceh provided the template. As the World Bank’s infrastructure lead in Indonesia, he coordinated dozens of donors with no formal authority, a lesson in convening rather than commanding. That experience animates his book, The New Global Possible, and his term of art for the work ahead: orchestration. 							<![CDATA[KATHMANDU — Birds living in Nepal’s capital may be losing their fear of humans in response to rapid unplanned urbanization — with potential ramifications for the diversity of birdlife in the Kathmandu Valley, two recently published studies indicate. Both studies show that city birds are increasingly becoming tolerant to human presence in the rapidly expanding urban sprawl devoid of trees (let alone native ones), suggesting that some generalist species may proliferate massively while more specialist species may lose out and eventually disappear. “The results of the studies are positive if you look at it through the lens of human-bird coexistence,” researcher Kamal Raj Gosai, who wasn’t involved in either of the studies, told Mongabay. “However, one of the many downsides to this is that native birds that can’t live close to humans may find it hard to survive.” Kathmandu lies in a valley that was once an ancient lake. 							<![CDATA[KATHMANDU — On an early spring morning in the western forests of Chitwan National Park in Nepal, a cacophony of birdsongs resonates through the air, mingling with the rustling of dried leaves and cries of other animals in the distance. As the sun’s rays penetrate the thick canopy, a feathered creature adorned with a dark arc looping across its breast and a striped white patch on its cheek serenades with a sequence of whistles that sound like laughter. A short distance away, a smaller bird, mostly brown with hints of rust on its neck and sides, and a conspicuous black pattern on its white chest, composes a tuneful and melodious call. In the shade of the bushes, the two birds appear similar. But they’re anything but. The two birds — the greater necklaced laughingthrush Pterorhinus pectoralis) and the lesser necklaced laughingthrush (Garrulax monileger) — don’t even belong to the same genus, despite their names and their strikingly similar visual features. A new study looking at the interactions between the two species, which are found across South and East Asia, suggests that the smaller of the laughingthrushes may have adopted mimicry of the bigger bird as an evolutionary strategy to potentially placate the greater laughingthrush when it’s around, gain some level of protection against predators, and get better access to food by foraging near the larger bird. It was the culmination of To-Syn-Fuel, a pathfinding project using technology developed by Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT to make 50,000 liters (13,200 gallons) of biocrude oil from 500 tons of sewage sludge. The trip marked a milestone in global efforts to convert human waste into a viable transportation fuel, according to Robert Daschner, head of the department of renewable energy at Fraunhofer UMSICHT, which led the multi-partner project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program. Using To-Syn-Fuel can achieve carbon savings of up to 85% compared to fossil fuels, he wrote to Mongabay in an email. But that historic EU road trip was only an intermediary goal: Next up is the construction of a larger-scale crud-to-crude facility in Germany, built upon lessons learned from a smaller proof-of-concept demonstration plant. The aim is to process up to 400,000 metric tons of sewage sludge into “sustainable aviation fuel” by 2030, Daschner wrote. If this, or other promising crud-to-crude pilot projects, achieve truly scaled-up success, science and industry could crack one of the hardest nuts for realizing a post-fossil fuel economy: a transportation liquid fuel, with low-carbon potential to power cars, trucks, jets and ships. 							<![CDATA[Across Hawai’i’s sprawling islands of towering tree ferns in the wet mountains to the night-blooming maiapilo flower on the coasts, down to the vibrant lionfish in the seas, an Indigenous stewardship and conservation system, known as ahupua’a, is being revived. The traditional system divides the islands into long wedges running from the mountaintops down into the ocean and are the subject of a new report written by leaders from three communities that have successfully restored the Indigenous practice. “They [ahupuaʻa] are relics of our ancient past, but they&#8217;re encoded in our land use and recordation system even until today,” says Hannah Kihalani Springer, one of the authors of the report and an ʻŌiwi (Indigenous Hawaiian) kūpuna (elder). She lives in the ahupua’a of Kaʻūpūlehu on the island of Hawaiʻi, within a 5-mile radius of where her ancestors have for hundreds of years. Local communities still recognize and live within these Indigenous ancestral territories today. But the state and U.S. government don’t divide land the same way. Instead, they grant private land ownership and manage habitats in isolation from one another with different agencies looking over various aquatic and terrestrial areas. This limits Indigenous people’s ability to live and care for the land in their traditional ways, ecologist Kawika Winter of the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology and lead author of the paper tells Mongabay. 							<![CDATA[In a globally interconnected world, textiles such as leather sourced from cattle, and wool sheared from sheep, have become a serious source of deforestation, other adverse land-use impacts, biodiversity loss and climate change, while fur farms (harvesting pelts from slaughtered mink, foxes, raccoon dogs and other cage-kept wild animals) have become a major biohazard to human health — a threat underlined by the risk fur farms pose to the current and future spread of zoonotic diseases like COVID-19. But in a not-so-distant future, fashion biomaterials made from plant leaves, fruit waste, and lab-grown microorganisms may replace animal-derived textiles — including leather, fur, wool and silk — with implementation at first on a small but quickly expanding scale, but eventually on a global scale. In fact, that trend is well underway. In less than a decade, dozens of startups have emerged, developing a range of biomaterials that, in addition to eliminating the use of animal products, incorporate sustainable practices into their production chains. Not all these textile companies, mostly based in Europe and the United States, have fully achieved their goals, but they continue to experiment and work toward a new fashion paradigm. Among promising discoveries: vegan bioleather made with mycelium (the vegetative, threadlike part of fungi), and bioexotic skins made from cactus and pineapple leaves, grape skins and seeds, apple juice, banana stalks and coconut water. 							<![CDATA[The sum of human waste produced by 7.8 billion people is grossly impacting human health and the environment, with wastewater adding around 6.2 million tons of nitrogen to coastal waters annually, along with unknown amounts of other pollutants ranging from pharmaceuticals to microplastics. Sewage and wastewater pollution are so bad, in fact, that they’re contributing to the destabilization of Earth’s safe operating systems, negatively impacting at least five planetary boundaries — polluting freshwater, oceans and land with nutrient overloads and other contaminants; harming biodiversity; and even adding to climate change. But while wastewater pollution is a dangerous multiheaded hydra, there are a plethora of technologies and innovations being tested and implemented to tackle the crisis. The good news: each local solution that works, and can then be scaled up globally, offers an opportunity to start backing away from not just one planetary boundary breach, but several. Efforts are currently underway across the world not only to treat wastewater and offer adequate sanitation, but also to recover and reuse the valuable nutrients and freshwater we flush away daily as waste. Supporting communities, protecting ecosystems About six in 10 people planetwide lack access to proper sanitation, according to USAID. In developing nations, where basic sanitation systems and waste treatment facilities are lacking, access to safe sanitation is a first vital step. With its clunky, segmented body, the robo-chameleon unveiled by South Korean researchers could easily be mistaken for a children&#8217;s toy or a real chameleon in body armor. It’s neither. It is, in fact, an embodiment of cutting-edge camouflage technology. Or at least, cutting-edge for muggles, or non-magical humans. The artificial “skin” could very well be a precursor to invisibility cloaks à la Harry Potter. Hyeonseok Kim, a co-author of the new paper published in Nature Communications, said he was struck by the chameleons he had seen at zoos, especially their ability to don different colors. He decided to model the robot on these Old World lizards. There are currently more than 200 known species of chameleons, most of which are native to Madagascar, a biodiversity hotspot in the Indian Ocean. They come in all sizes, from the chunky Parson’s chameleon (Calumma parsonii) that can grow to 69 centimeters (27 inches), to the smallest, just shy of 1.4 cm (0.55 in). Butler While rainforests provide $4 trillion/year in value through ecosystem services to the global economy, over $941 billion of annual corporate revenue is at risk due to dependency on commodities linked to deforestation. Correspondingly, a 2019 paper made the financial argument for conserving 30% of terrestrial nature by demonstrating how the economic benefits outweigh the costs by a factor of 5 to 1. And, finally, a 1996 paper outlines a protocol for calculating the commercial value of biodiversity on a given plot of land. If, despite these numbers, governments have failed to halt deforestation to date, can we persuade the private sector to do so based on opportunities for future profits? 							<![CDATA[Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been the year of the climate commitment, with a number of companies and governments announcing plans to reduce carbon emissions by a specified level at some point in the future. One of the boldest commitments to date has come from the tech giant Microsoft, which in January pledged to be carbon negative by 2030. But Microsoft didn&#8217;t stop there, the company also said it would &#8220;remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975&#8221; by 2050. In other words, Microsoft plans to zero out all of its historical carbon emissions. Microsoft&#8217;s commitments to date apply to land, water, emissions, waste, and biodiversity. Photo by Rhett A. Building on this carbon target, this year Microsoft further announced it will replenish more water than it consumes and produce zero net waste by 2030, while protecting more land than it uses by 2025. The company also said it would lend its computing power toward efforts to combat biodiversity loss and use its voice to advocate for public policies that &#8220;measure and manage ecosystems&#8221;. Heading up these ambitious sustainability initiatives is Microsoft’s chief environmental officer Lucas Joppa. 							<![CDATA[Contemporary art may seem tangential to environmental concerns for many people, especially those who are active practitioners of conservation, but The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles is looking to shift that perception. MOCA has formed an Environmental Council that aims to address some of today’s most pressing environmental issues. The council, composed of a diverse grouping of high-profile environmentalists, will specifically focus on climate, conservation and environmental justice and its cross-section with art in Los Angeles and “beyond”, according to a recent press release provided to Mongabay. In this unique initiative, a broader and more inclusive concept of “preservation” is on display, as art and environment converge under one umbrella. Of course, museums are, and always been, in the business of preservation.  Museums invest major effort to preserve art and maintain it in its original state, so that people may enjoy these timeless pieces for generations to come. This basic iteration of preservation is, of course, redundant to environmentalists, who strive to protect and maintain our planet’s vulnerable ecosystems. With the establishment of its Environmental Council, MOCA is expanding their “preservation lens” beyond its own walls and traditional purview, an exciting step that could bring more people and more resources to the table in the protection of the planet.  After all, what good is a piece of art if we don’t have a habitable planet to enjoy it on? Recognizing the wisdom accumulated by nature over billions of years and reconnecting to it is the foundation stone of biomimicry, a branch of science gaining interest for reproducing strategies from nature to provide solutions for our times. Using nature as a guide is nothing new: if it weren’t for birds, airplanes most likely wouldn’t exist. Yet biomimicry brings two new aspects: the conscious use of nature as source of inspiration, and the systemization of research through a non-linear methodology. U.S. biologist Janine Benyus, co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute in the Montana, wrote the book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature in 1997 and has been responsible for propagating the science now being used in multiple applications. Biomimicry helps in fields like health care, by tracing possible relationships between wasp poison and new cancer therapies, for example. It reproduces spiderweb technology for the beauty industry; offers improved energy efficiency to the field of engineering by observing how termite mounds or toucan beaks work; proposes the use of mushroom roots and agricultural waste to replace Styrofoam and plastic; and can be applied very well to new technologies like logistics apps. It also offers foundations for work in personal development and human behavior. There are a number of examples of harmless animals impersonating harmful or noxious animals, known as “Batesian mimicry.” The term refers to Henry Walter Bates, who collected hundreds of species of butterflies in the Amazon in the mid-19th century and discovered that there are many non-toxic butterflies that imitate toxic species. Since then, scientists have found lizards that mimic toxic millipedes, sharks that emulate venomous sea snakes, and harmless snakes, caterpillars, and legless lizards that are capable of passing themselves off as venomous snakes. But the Congolese giant toad (Sclerophrys channingi) is the first toad found to mimic a harmful snake, in this case the highly venomous Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica), which has longer fangs and produces more venom than any other known snake species. A team of researchers who spent ten years in the field observing the Congolese giant toad and its mimicry behavior published their findings in the Journal of Natural History this week. “We&#8217;re convinced that this is an example of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species avoids predators by pretending to be a dangerous or toxic one,&#8221; study co-author Eli Greenbaum of the University of Texas at El Paso said in a statement. 							<![CDATA[In April 2018, a month before Malaysian voters elected Mahathir Mohamad to the prime minister’s office, Ng Zhu Hann couldn’t have been more open and enthusiastic about Forest City, the $100 billion island city rising from reclaimed seabed at the western entrance to the Johor Strait that marks the border with Singapore. “Over 10 billion ringgit [$3 billion] has been invested so far and our first island is halfway reclaimed,” said Ng, Forest City’s strategic director. “We’re building green and smart. That’s what we’ve planned to do. That’s what our buyers want.” The mix of residential towers and contemporary office and retail spaces, one of the largest real estate projects on the planet, was just starting to recover from a storm of bad publicity. Fishermen had been worried about the dredged sand used in the reclamation destroying coastal seagrass beds. Competing developers said Forest City added to a housing surplus that was lowering apartment prices. Authorities in Singapore, just across the narrow strait, objected to construction having started before the needed permits were secured. Ng countered that the project was responding with investments to fix environmental risks, and with a public relations strategy to invite more transparency about the contentious project’s progress. 							<![CDATA[TANETE, Indonesia — Aman Wijaya looks up at the roof made from a thousand bamboo stems. “At last this building is standing tall,” he says. “It’s an example to all of us here.” Residents of Tanete village call the building Bambu Bandara (bandara means airport in Indonesian) because the design mimics Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, around 20 kilometers (12 miles) west in Makassar, the capital of Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province. The ceiling is configured to look like gently rolling waves. The idea for a new public space constructed from sustainable materials first took root in a meeting between Aman and his colleagues in Arsitek Komunitas (Community Architects), an NGO, with the local government in 2017. Aman started to sketch plans, consulting with others in Tanete on how best to proceed toward an inclusive design. Bamboo was used for bridge-building in China since at least the 10th century. Its strength, durability and the speed with which it grows (by almost 1 meter, or 3 feet, a year) meant both split and woven bamboo was commonly used for housing and myriad other purposes. Up until that moment, they&#8217;d heard nothing about land reclamation planned for their neighborhood. Over the next few months, they would begin to learn about the scope of the development scheme planned for this shallow expanse of shellfish beds and seagrass. Country Garden Pacificview, a unit of one of China’s largest real-estate developers, had quietly partnered with the Johor state government and Ibrahim Ismail, the sultan of Johor, to build a &#8220;21st century city&#8221; on a 19-square-kilometer (7.3-square-mile) man-made island in the Strait of Johor. Village leaders alerted media in Johor Bahru, the state capital. They also contacted reporters in Singapore, located just across the narrow strait. Singapore, which is extremely sensitive to any effort to crowd the waterway dividing the two nations with a new development, and especially without any prior notification, issued a formal request for information. New information quickly emerged. According to local media reports, Country Garden had paid the sultan and the government $55 million and gained the right to purchase and construct the man-made island that would be big enough for a city of tall towers and 700,000 residents. 							<![CDATA[Nectar-feeding bats shift the shape of their tongue to slurp up sugar from flowers upon which they feed, finds a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Using histological techniques, high-speed videography, and anatomical studies, Brown University biologist Cally Harper and colleagues found that the bat Glossophaga soricina relies on hair-like structures known as papillae on its tongue to extract nectar from flowers. The structures, which become erect when muscle contraction fills them with blood, increase the surface area and width of its tongue tip to create a hydraulic process that causes nectar to flow along the tongue into the bat&#8217;s mouth. Previously it was thought the papillae played a passive role, more akin to a mop than a pump. The mechanism is &#8220;surprisingly clever&#8221;, according to the researchers. This husband-wife duo spent most of their lives traveling long distances to and from Otavalo, an Andean crossroads about an hour outside of the capital Quito, to sell their jewelry at the daily market. Despite this travel, their customer base at the Otavalo market was limited and sales often unpredictable. As a result, it was getting increasingly difficult for Nancy and Carlos to make ends meet as they were earning an average of USD 4 per day. Living in a small one-story home that doubled as their workspace, they worried for a secure future for their three children. Nancy and Carlos were not alone. Stories like theirs were among the many that Amanda Judge witnessed firsthand when she was conducting her field research for a Masters’ thesis on poverty reduction strategies in rural South America. While interviewing the local artisans to understand their perception of poverty, Amanda heard time and again that all they truly wanted was a long-term financial solution to help ensure their families’ future. Though her background is in finance, Amanda’s hobby has always been designing and creating jewelry. So after meeting with the local Ecuadorian artisans and seeing their jewelry designs, she knew there was an opportunity to improve their incomes while marketing high-quality eco-friendly products. New understanding of how female tungara frogs sort out the din of multiple males singing may lead to insights into human hearing, according to a new study in Nature Communications. &#8220;An important component of successful communication is being able to tell which sender among many is sending the signal,&#8221; explains neuroscientist Hamilton Farris with Louisiana State University (LSU) in a press release. &#8220;In auditory neuroscience it&#8217;s called the &#8216;cocktail party problem.'&#8221; Female tungara frogs have to deal with cocktail party of their own, only this party is all male. Male tungaras produce complex songs to lure females, but make life difficult for females by overlapping songs. Females have to overcome the noise if they are to select a mate. The study found that females sort out males&#8217; song much in the same way as humans determine a single voice from a din: they group together sounds that are most similar. &#8220;Thus, in noisy, complicated environments, the cognitive solution is not based on absolute stimulus rules, but one which compares all the sounds and then deduces their sources,&#8221; concludes Farris. &#8220;Based on our research, we now have a better understanding of how the acoustic cues are used to solve the problem, an understanding that will guide research advances to solve communication problems associated with hearing deficits and disorders of attention.&#8221; This is not the only contribution tungara frogs have brought to human society. Specializing in hand-crafted products by indigenous groups—such as jewelry, pots, and furniture—Ecostasy seeks to balance smart economics, environmental protection, and community development. Make no mistake, however, Ecostasy is not a non-profit, but a rare and refreshing example of a company truly dedicated to changing the world for the better. &#8220;In my mind, a virtuous company does not compromise ethical principles for economic interests. For me, being ethical is comprised of conducting oneself with honesty and responsibility to one’s constituencies (customers, employees, suppliers), society and the environment,&#8221; Katherine Ponte, founder of Ecostasy, told mongabay.com in an interview. Ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific have shifted into El Niño conditions, increasing the likelihood of anomalously dry conditions in Southeast Asia and other unusual weather patterns, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center. NOAA reports that sea surface temperatures remain 0.5&deg;C to +1.5&deg;C above-average across much of the equatorial Pacific Ocean and says that current forecasts indicate &#8220;El Niño conditions will continue to intensify and are expected to last through Northern Hemisphere winter 2009-10.&#8221; But the agency notes that conditions are still weak, meaning that it is too soon to determine whether a full-blown El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate pattern (ENSO) will develop. 							<![CDATA[The deaths of billions of birds annually due to collision with window glass can be reduced through simple measures including dimming lights in buildings at night, landscaping changes, and using window coverings that make glass more visible to birds, reports a bird expert writing in The Wilson Journal of Ornithology. Conducting experiment with different types of firm on plastics and glass, Daniel Klem Jr., an ornithologist at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, found coverings that create visual &#8220;noise&#8221; can dramatically reduce bird-window collisions without drastically increasing costs or impeding visibility for humans relative to conventional glass. The most effective covering was a new exterior film with evenly spaced ultraviolet (UV)-reflecting and UV-absorbing patterns, which can be seen by birds but not humans. &#8220;When this film is available for use it will save billions of bird lives annually after existing windows are retrofitted worldwide,&#8221; Klem told mongabay.com. &#8220;The long-term solution to saving birds from windows is to use similar effective patterns as a permanent coating to sheet glass used in new construction.&#8221; Causes of birth death in the United States cited by Daniel Klem. Klem&#8217;s research found one in four strikes leave no evidence of a collision on a window, suggesting overall estimates are conservative. Collisions are most frequent at ground level during daylight hours when birds mistake window reflections for habitat and fly into them, says Klem. 							<![CDATA[Big computer makers pitch energy efficiency to sell more services, equipment Big computer makers pitch energy efficiency to sell more services, equipment mongabay.com September 9, 2008 Tech giants are using high power costs to market new energy efficiency computers to large corporate data centers, reports the Wall Street Journal. &#8220;Ironically, the companies that designed and sold those computers are now able to capitalize on the higher power bills the machines rack up,&#8221; writes William M. Bulkeley. Power consumption by data centers now accounts for 1.5 percent of U.S. electricity use, according to estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency. Computer makers say that re-vamping data centers to run more efficiently can save considerable amounts of cash while improving performance. Both International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), Hewlett-Packard Co. (H-P) have unveiled energy-efficiency consulting services. They are also selling more energy-efficient hardware. Yesterday Intel rolled out its new low-power Xeon chip. The firm touted the chips as the first to be made without halogen. Halogen is difficult to recycle, contains toxic compounds, and is thought to contribute to global warming.
