Oil palm is a hugely productive plant that has become ubiquitous in recent decades in everything from toiletries to packaged foods. But its rise in the global marketplace has also led to vast deforestation, biodiversity loss, and conflict with local communities in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Large-scale production of the oil is now spreading to central Africa and South America.
