These species weren’t historically targeted by Maldivian fishers, but were rising in popularity over the last decade. This came to a head in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as tourism workers were being let go from their jobs at resorts, and fishing became more popular recreationally, as well as a means of earning money and providing food. “This was the only way for them to earn an income at that time,” Hashim told Mongabay by video call. Today, she’s the co-founder and executive director of Maldives Resilient Reefs (MRR). Hashim said the parrotfish were particularly concerning. At the time, they weren’t a protected species, though they played a key role in recycling sediment and generating new habitat for coral reefs. Protecting them means safeguarding accretion: An important sedimentary process that is intertwined with the resiliency and natural management of atolls. “Accretion really is the deposition of sediment above the water level,” said Paul Kench, a coastal scientist and the pro vice-chancellor of Te Wānanga Pūtaiao Division of STEM at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. The easing of fishing curbs can be traced to the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission’s (IOTC) scientific body finding that Thunnus albacares stocks aren’t overfished, nor are they currently experiencing overfishing in the Indian Ocean. The body first made the determination in 2024, but the finding underwent an internal review process before being accepted by the commission at its recent meeting in the Maldives. The meeting held in May was attended by delegates from coastal nations in Asia, Africa and Oceania, as well as distant-water fishing powers like Japan and the European Union. Now, that scientific advice has translated into a reframing of the management rules, provoking sharply divided reactions. Conservationists are urging caution, citing the long history of yellowfin overfishing and the difficulties in monitoring and curbing overexploitation. Industry representatives, meanwhile, hailed the decision, saying it secures access to one of the region’s most lucrative tuna fisheries. At the meeting in the Maldives, parties agreed on a total allowable catch (TAC) and quotas for contracting members for the period from 2027-2028. 							<![CDATA[Every winter, millions of birds fly thousands of kilometers via the Central Asian Flyway (CAF) and East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF), from the frozen expanses of Siberia and Central Asia to the warmer South Asia and beyond. The birds’ migration depends on a chain of intact ecosystems: primarily wetlands, riverine forests and coastal mangroves, which serve as their crucial stopover sites for rest and refueling. However, today, many of these habitats and food sources are disappearing. Researchers from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, India, the Maldives, Bhutan and Sri Lanka have assessed that wetland conversion amid agricultural expansion and rapid urbanization, unplanned fishing and pollution are degrading the wetlands, mudflats and river systems across South Asia. Bangladeshi ornithologist Sayam U. Chowdhury, a researcher at the Conservation Research Institute (CRI) under the University of Cambridge, explains how rapid urbanization and the loss of natural wetlands pose a serious threat to migratory waterbirds. Although many people associate waterbirds with fish, most migratory species — including ducks, geese and shorebirds — rely on shallow wetlands, mudflats and nearby agricultural lands. They primarily feed on aquatic vegetation, seeds and invertebrates rather than fish. “When waterbodies are drained, polluted or heavily altered, it destroys the habitats and food resources these birds depend on during their non-breeding season,” Chowdhury tells Mongabay. Popularly known as Anni, Nasheed served as president from 2008-12 and throughout his presidency and thereafter has remained one of world’s better known climate activists, drawing attention to the impact of sea level rise and the future of small island states. The Maldives consists of more than 1,190 coral islands grouped into 27 atolls. Before a 1998 El Niño bleaching event, the archipelago’s coral reefs remained in good condition, but it killed a significant portion of the fragile ecosystem, which continues to be impacted by climate change. In recent years, increasing sea temperatures have resulted in frequent coral bleaching events. The archipelago’s coral reef systems form the world’s seventh largest, spreading over 8,900 square kilometers (3,400 square miles). In 2019, Nasheed founded the Maldives Coral Institute (MCI) to support coral reefs to survive and adapt to climate impacts. In an interview with Mongabay, Nasheed speaks about the 2,000-plus distinct coral reefs belonging to 57 genera that are found in his island home, what it means for the Maldives to lose its corals, and the many challenges before small island states and the world at large if new conservation models and climate responses are not sought. In this well-trodden world, finding a new species is a glimpse of the uncharted riches of biodiversity still hidden around the globe. Scientists estimate that only 10% of all the species on the planet have been described. Even among the most well-known group of animals, mammals, scientists think we have only found 80% of species. Most of these hidden species are likely bats, rodents, shrews, moles, and hedgehogs. “Based on our analysis, a conservative estimate would be that there are hundreds of species of mammals worldwide that have yet to be identified,” Bryan Carstens, a professor at The Ohio State University, told Mongabay. This year, researchers at the California Academy of Sciences named 146 new species, including “44 lizards, 30 ants, 14 sea slugs, 14 flowering plants, 13 sea stars, seven fishes, four beetles, four sharks, three moths, three worms, two scorpions, two spiders, two lichens, one toad, one clam, one aphid, and one sea biscuit.” Around 2,000 new species of plants and fungi are found each year, according to Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew). These are potential sources of food, medicines, and other solutions. Very little is known about the Maldivian sea below 30 meters (about 100 feet), despite the country’s entire area consisting 99% of water. The Nekton Maldives Mission, a collaboration between scientists and the Maldivian government, sought to fill this knowledge gap by surveying the country’s offshore waters from the surface to a depth of about 1,000 m (about 3,300 ft). During this mission, the researchers encountered something surprising: a previously undiscovered ecosystem they’ve since named the “trapping zone.” This recently identified ecosystem exists at a depth of about 500 m (about 1,600 feet), where layers of volcanic rock and fossilized reefs below the islands form vertical cliffs and shelving terraces. These physical structures appear to “trap” an array of tiny mesopelagic organisms — known as micronekton — that migrate to the surface each night and dive down to the deep ocean at night. But the species don’t seem to find their way back to the deep sea when the sun rises, which is why the researchers called it the “trapping zone.” The proliferation of micronekton in the trapping zone attracts pelagic predators like sharks and tuna, as well as large deep-water fish like tinselfish, spiky oreos and snake mackerel, the researchers said. A global outcry followed, and the government quickly abandoned the idea. The 2010 ban effectively turned Maldivian waters, a marine area the size of Portugal, into a shark sanctuary, the first of its kind in the Indian Ocean. But whether it remains that way is far from certain, a new paper in Conservation Letters shows. Discontent is festering among both small-scale fishers and commercial tuna fishers, with fishers blaming sharks for stealing their catches, eating into their earnings, and damaging their fishing gear. This threatens what conservationists see as a successful intervention to slow this iconic fish’s decline. “There was quite a lot of anger and resentment towards sharks,” Danielle Robinson, a marine conservationist at Newcastle University, U.K., who led the research, told Mongabay. Many fishers blamed the creation of the shark sanctuary for a worsening of the problems. While there’s no authoritative data showing that sharks are now more abundant in Maldivian waters, that doesn’t mean we should ignore the disaffection among local communities, Robinson said. “In human-wildlife conflicts, people often focus on collecting data, for example, whether sharks have increased or depredation has increased,” she said. “But what we need to understand is human perception.” Sharks in the Maldives do appear to have a public relations problem. New to science, the rose-veiled fairy wrasse (Cirrhilabrus finifenmaa) is named in the local Dhivehi language. The team took advantage of the atoll’s mosaic of land uses to examine how different human activities affect their resident invertebrates—insects and other small species without backbones. Their surveys found 48 percent fewer species on average for islands with towns and development than for untouched islands, which the scientists linked to habitat fragmentation. Islands devoted to tourism fared even worse with 66 percent fewer species on average, perhaps from heavy pesticide use to maintain landscaped grounds. Using remote sensing, researchers mapped land and vegetation cover on small islands in the Maldives to investigate connections between different land uses and declines in insects and other invertebrate species. Not only do they socialize with their own kind, but they’re also accompanied by a range of different species — from sharksuckers to trevally to trumpetfish. In a new paper published in PLOS ONE, a team of researchers from the Manta Trust, a U.K.-based charity, and the University of Bristol analyzed more than 76,500 sightings of reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) and oceanic manta rays (Mobula birostris) over a 30-year period in the Maldives to figure out what kinds of species associated with them. The most common “hitchhiker” species seen with these rays were sharksucker remoras (Echeneis naucrates) and giant remoras (Remora remora), which are both from the Echeneidae family. But the researchers also identified 11 other tag-along species, including the black trevally (Caranx lugubris), rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata), and Chinese trumpetfish (Aulostomus chinensis). It’s not easy to find sharks these days. Just ask Demian Chapman, a marine scientist who leads Global FinPrint, a project that assesses shark populations on reefs worldwide. But he says there is a spot where they’re often found: the Maldives, a tiny nation of islands speckled in the Indian Ocean. “The Maldives is a place where we drop cameras, and we see sharks frequently, which really is very unusual,” Chapman told Mongabay in an interview. “You know, most places we drop cameras and see nothing [or] one shark or two sharks, but then the Maldives is pretty consistent.” Sharks are plentiful in the Maldives thanks to a 90,000-square-kilometer (34,750-square-mile) shark sanctuary — that’s about three times as big as Belgium — set up in 2010 with a blanket ban on shark fishing and finning. Our 2018 review of tech stories highlights how automation is transforming how we study and monitor nature, aggregating and analyzing multiple data sources, and communicating the results as management and conservation recommendations. Artificial intelligence (AI), including various types of pattern recognition algorithms and neural networks, is changing how the research and conservation communities do their work. We highlight just some examples below. 1) Image pattern recognition for detecting species Pattern recognition includes the automated detection of target objects in photos – taken by people, drones, satellites, or cameras traps – as well as in sound files collected with acoustic monitoring devices. As image datasets grow, the availability of pattern recognition algorithms becomes more critical. For example, one study showed that deep neural networks, a type of machine learning that recognizes numerical patterns in stages, can review and categorize image data far faster than humans can, and nearly as accurately.  These networks automatically counted, identified, and described the behaviors of 48 animal species in the 3.2-million image Snapshot Serengeti camera trap dataset, which would translate to saving more than 17,000 hours, or nearly 8.5 years of human labeling effort. Indeed, no country lies lower than the coral reef island nation that straddles the equator in the Indian Ocean: Its highest point sits just 2.4 meters (less than 8 feet) above sea level. But when East and her colleagues pieced together the formation of several of these islands using core samples, collected with aluminum pipes hammered into the coral, they discovered that much of the reef construction happened between 1,600 and 4,200. At that time, sea levels were as much as 0.5 meters (about 1.5 feet) higher than they are currently today. The dive team assembled the pieces as a few triggerfish circled around to investigate the commotion. After just two air tanks (about an hour each), they had locked all of the items together into the final product: an artificial coral reef. The 3D-printed reef, installed at Summer Island Maldives resort earlier this month, is the first of its kind on any of the 1,200 islands of the Maldives. Each of the artificial reef’s ceramic components was 3D printed with a custom design and then fitted with coral fragments that developers hope will grow across the entire structure. 							<![CDATA[Reef fish may take longer to recover from overfishing than previously thought. While smaller fish with short life spans tend to rebound quickly in protected reefs, larger, slow growing fish may need more than 100 years of strong protection to fully recover, a new study concludes. The study was published online this month in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Tim McClanahan, senior conservationist for the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Nick Graham, a researcher with James Cook University in Australia, analyzed fish survey data from 324 coral reef sites in the Indian Ocean, spanning eight countries. They classified the study sites into six management categories ranging from large, uninhabited, remote protected areas down to reefs open to fishing with no restrictions on gear, which included destructive dragnets and explosives. For the fish at each site, the researchers evaluated family-level life history characteristics, such as body length, growth rate, age of maturation, and mortality. Previous research into reef-fish recovery rates primarily investigated biomass — the collective weight of fish in a given area — and tended to conclude that fish communities in protected reefs had recovered when their biomass leveled off, often after about 20 years. But many life-history metrics of a reef community continue to change for decades after biomass levels off, the study found, and the full recovery process may take over a century. Mohamed Nasheed, former president of the Maldives, told the world on The Daily Show Monday night: &#8220;Just don&#8217;t be so silly&#8221; about climate change. Nasheed, who in February was forced to resign his presidency, is visiting the U.S. to meet with government officials as well as to push for climate action during the release of a new documentary film about his presidency, entitled The Island President. During his three years in office, Nasheed was arguably the world&#8217;s most impassioned leader on the issue of climate change. The Maldives, an archipelago of around 2,000 islands in the Indian Ocean, includes some of world&#8217;s most low-lying islands. Nasheed has argued that if global society allows the world to warm by 2 degrees Celsius, the current pledge made by governments around the world, it will force the abandonment of the Maldives as the islands sink under rising sea levels. Before its ouster, his government even looked at purchasing land abroad as a home new for his people. In fact, Nasheed told the host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, that the impacts of climate change are already forcing populations to be relocated from some islands. &#8220;Climate change is an issue that is happening now. One of the studies finds that if the world is to have a 66 percent chance of staying below a rise of two degrees Celsius, greenhouse gas emissions would need to peak in less than a decade and fall quickly thereafter. The other study predicts that pats of Europe, Asia, North Africa and Canada could see a rise beyond two degrees Celsius within just twenty years. Running out of time How do we stay below a global rise of two degrees Celsius? According to a new study involving researchers various climate institutes, greenhouse gas emissions would need to peak during the decade and fall to 44 gigatons by 2020. Emissions this year are expected to hit 48 gigatons. Dropping 4 gigatons may appear easier than it is as experts consider many future emissions to already be &#8216;locked in&#8217; due to fossil fuel power plants that are already running or currently under construction. In this case, some power plants would have to be abandoned altogether to keep the world under two degrees Celsius. However, even this scenario provides only a &#8216;likely&#8217; avoidance of keeping warming below two degrees Celsius. 							<![CDATA[As world leaders continue to fumble a coherent, rapid, and comprehensive response to climate change, citizens from around the world yesterday sent a message to inert politicians by participating in over 7,300 events against climate change, according to 350.org, the head organizer of the day dubbed the &#8216;Global Work Party&#8217;. &#8220;The fossil fuel industry may have thought that the collapse of the Copenhagen talks and its victory in the U.S. Congress were the final word—that people would give up in discouragement,&#8221; said, Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, so-called because 350 parts per millions (ppm) is the &#8216;safe&#8217; amount of carbon in the atmosphere according to many scientists. Currently the concentration is around 390 ppm. Rather than focusing on protests, the Global Work Party was meant to get citizens actively working on solutions to climate change. For example, students planted trees in Kabul, Afghanistan; a research station installed six solar panels in the desert of Namibia; supporters handed out cloth bags in Sana&#8217;a, Yemen; roofs were painted white in Lima, Peru; after being injured by an oil spill African penguins will be releases back into the wild in South Africa; and a group cleaned up beaches in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The free-market think tank believes that curbing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change will be too costly to the US and global economies. &#8220;If the focus in this century is on wealth creation, then the islands will be much better prepared for the risks if they materialize,&#8221; Fred Smith, founder of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, told the AP. Low-lying islands nations say they are already feeling the effects of rising sea levels that have been going up approximately 3 mm every year since 1993. Estimates range widely for sea level rise by the end of the century, but recent studies predict somewhere between 0.18 and 2 meters. Some island nations are looking at purchasing land abroad to move if their home is submerged. Mohamed Nasheed, the President of Maldives, the lowest lying islands in the world, has stated that complacency at the Conference on Climate Change inCopenhagen would mean a &#8220;global suicide pact&#8221;. Recently Nasheed held a cabinet meeting at the bottom of the sea to bring world attention to the plight facing island nations. If sea levels rise by one meter, the Maldives will be underwater. 							<![CDATA[A group of nations especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change have released a declaration calling for developed countries to keep CO2 emission below 350 parts per million (ppm) and to give 1.5 percent of their gross domestic product to aid developing nations in adapting to the myriad impacts of climate change. &#8220;Anthropogenic climate change poses an existential threat to our nations, our cultures and to our way of life, and thereby undermines the internationally-protected human rights of our people,&#8221; the declaration states, which is supported by nations attending the summit, including the Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam, Kiribati, Barbados, Bhutan, Ghana, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. These countries have already been severely impacted by rising seas, extensive droughts, and melting glaciers. &#8220;Developed countries bear the overwhelming historic responsibility for causing anthropogenic climate change and must therefore take the lead in responding to the challenge,&#8221; the declaration reads, outlining that this role should involve mitigation, adaptation, technology, and financing the solutions.
