Moose, also known as elk in Europe, are the world’s largest deer. They span the northern hemisphere from Eastern Canada to Alaska and from Scandinavia to China. The IUCN Red List considers the ‘moose’ in America and ‘Eurasian elk’ as distinct species.
There are believed to be around 1.5 million Eurasian moose with the population on the rise. Unlike most deer, moose are largely solitary, althought mating season can result in epic battles with males vying for dominance using their massive antlers.
The world’s largest moose are found in Alaska.
