President Museveni again moves against Uganda's forests

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has again taken action against rainforest conservation in Uganda, moving to hand a protected forest reserve over to private agricultural interests intent on clearing trees, according to a report from Reuters.

Museveni asked for the resignation of Olav Bjella, executive director of the National Forest Authority, after Bjella refused to allow the president to handover a protected forest reserve on Bugala island in Lake Victoria to oil palm developers.

Museveni's decision comes as he faces criticism for a plan that would allow another developer to convert a third of Mabira forest reserve to sugar plantation.
