							<![CDATA[Social and travel restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented Brazilian conservationist Patrícia Medici from going to London last month to receive one of the most prestigious awards in the world of conservation science. The Whitley Gold Award — the top prize given out every year by the Whitley Fund for Nature — is considered such a major honor that it is known as the “Green Oscars” and is handed out by Princess Anne of England, the fund’s patron. Medici, who received her first Whitley Award in 2008, was named the recipient this year for her work to conserved Brazil’s threatened wildlife in general and the lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) in particular. The awards ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society has now been rescheduled to December, if things are normal by then. Until then, however, Medici says she hopes the health crisis doesn’t prevent her from resuming her expeditions with the Lowland Tapir Conservation Initiative (Incab) in the second half of 2020. That’s when she does most of her fieldwork, when the weather is dry in the Pantanal, the sanctuary of the lowland tapir in Brazil, and scientists are better able to document the animal’s behavior and breeding habits. Photo courtesy of the USDA The number and rate of pesticides registered for use in Brazil rose rapidly in the first year of the Bolsonaro government. In 2019, 474 new products were approved, the highest rate since the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) started documenting the registrations, in 2005. The explosion of pesticide approvals arrived during Michel Temer&#8217;s presidency in 2016, when the ruralist agribusiness lobby gained great influence within his administration. In that year the number jumped to 277 registrations, compared to 91 in 2005, for example. In 2017, a total of 405 pesticides were approved, and in 2018, another 451, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). According to a survey by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, of the 96 active ingredients that make up the pesticides released this year up to September, 28 are not available or registered in the European Union (29 percent) and 36 are not available in Australia (37 percent). Among the active ingredients approved this year in Brazil is dinotefuram, an insecticide classified as extremely toxic. It is not registered in the European Union, but it is marketed in the United States. Generic pesticides represent the majority of approvals so far under Bolsonaro. According to MAPA, the purpose of their approval is to lower the price of the products, which in turn lowers the cost of production. About 20 kilometers (12 miles) long and 7 kilometers (4 miles) wide, the Maya Forest Corridor connects two major protected areas: the Manatee Forest Reserve to the south and the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area to the north. These protected areas, in turn, are contiguous with the larger Maya Mountain Block in central Belize and the northern Maya lowland forests, shared by Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. The corridor also includes small protected areas, such as the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and the Labouring Creek Jaguar Corridor, which the Belizean government had previously set aside to provide safe passage for jaguars (Panthera onca). “Together, all these forests comprise the largest contiguous block of forest remaining in Central America, and is the largest block of forest in the neotropics north of the Amazon,” Percival Cho, CEO of Belize’s forestry ministry, told Mongabay. 							<![CDATA[Due to their remoteness, the high-altitude tropical forests of the Cerros del Sira, an isolated mountain range in the eastern Andes of central Peru, are known to harbor a diverse array of rare and endemic species like the Sira currasow, a critically endangered bird that can be found nowhere else on Earth. An expedition to the Cerros del Sira resulted in the first-ever camera trap footage of the Sira currasow (Pauxi koepckeae) being made available to the public in 2015. That camera trap survey also discovered the presence of Andean spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus) in the remote mountain range — some 100 kilometers (or 62 miles) distant from any of the bear’s previously known habitat. This was an important discovery because, while the Cerros del Sira are known to harbor a unique and diverse array of Andean and Amazonian birds, amphibians, and plants, the mammal species who call the mountain chain’s tropical forests home are still poorly known and relatively under-studied. A new camera trap study, the results of which were published in the journal Oryx last week, seeks to fill in the gaps in our knowledge of the Cerros del Sira’s mammalian inhabitants. An international team of scientists from Peru and the UK led by Ruthmery Pillco Huarcaya, a biologist at Peru’s National University of Cusco, deployed 45 camera traps from 2015 to 2016 in the Sira Communal Reserve, part of the Oxapampa-Asháninka-Yánesha Biosphere Reserve. And there they did something remarkable: they painted. They painted animals. In what’s been called the “oldest figurative rock art in the world” (the images are at least 5,000 years older than paintings found in the caves of Timpuseng in Sulawesi, also in Indonesia, or Chauvet in France) these early Borneans painted banteng, a type of wild cattle, and other animals, including another large mammal that is most likely a Malayan tapir. If you know anything about Borneo’s wildlife, you might pause here and think: “Hey, what? Borneo doesn’t have tapirs.” And that’s true. Today it doesn’t, but recent archaeological evidence proves that Malayan tapirs (Tapirus indicus) did exist in Borneo thousands of years ago — and may have even survived into the modern era. 							<![CDATA[Tigers and other wildlife in Peninsular Malaysia now have a new refuge, as the state government of Terengganu recently axed plans to log more than 100 square kilometers (39 square miles) and created a state park instead. “This new protected area not only brings more key wildlife habitat under protection, but also protects vital forested watersheds that provide important ecosystem services to the people of Terengganu,” Sheema Abdul Aziz, a conservation ecologist and president of the Malaysia-based conservation research NGO Rimba, said in a statement. Terengganu’s chief minister, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, made the announcement in mid-August, designating the 103.86-square-kilometer (40.1-square-mile) Lawit-Cenana State Park in the region of Kenyir. But in the past year, Mongabay’s editors, writers and correspondents have managed to find a few stories demonstrating that there’s still some hope for the iconic cat. Here are five upbeat articles to celebrate Global Tiger Day. 1. China contemplates, then approves, a massive national park that’s home to tigers and leopards. Most Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), also known as Siberian tigers, live in Russia. But more than 30 live at least part time in China, primarily in Jilin province. The provincial government began a proposal in mid-2016 to connect three protected areas and form a national park with an area of 14,600 square kilometers (5,640 square miles). That’s more than 50 percent larger than Yellowstone National Park in the United States. The park would also protect 42 Amur leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis) that inhabit the region. Experts say that such an expanse is necessary to support a growing tiger population. They also hope the park will help protect the tiger’s prey, such as roe deer. The findings, published online in June by the journal Biotropica, offer a bit of hope for biodiversity as the number of human-altered landscapes rises worldwide. A lot of research has shown that secondary tropical forest – that is, the forest that returns after humans have cleared what had been standing – still provides a viable habitat for many animals, though it’s less robust than primary, or old-growth, forest. But the Cerrado has remained a mystery, despite the fact that it covers between 20 and 25 percent of Brazil and half of it has been converted for agriculture. That’s a larger proportion than the conversion that’s occurred in either the Amazon or the Atlantic Forest, lead author Guilherme Ferreira said. “We didn’t know anything about secondary Cerrado,” said Ferreira, an ecologist with the Zoological Society of London and the Biotropics Institute in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The new study, published last month in Tropical Conservation Science, suggests that maintaining a network of riparian forests – habitat that hugs the banks of rivers and streams – can render pulp and paper plantations more wildlife-friendly. “More and better riparian corridors can definitely improve wildlife use in plantation areas,” William Laurance, a study co-author and Distinguished Research Professor at James Cook University, said in an email to Mongabay. “I was surprised at how common some species, such as tigers and elephants, appeared to be in these corridors, at least based on signs like their footprints and dung.” Other rare species, including the endangered Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus) and critically endangered Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica), were also shown to use thin strips of forest embedded in an otherwise inhospitable landscape. “[This research] shows that, with some provisions, we can maintain connectivity across productive landscapes, which is important for many ecological processes,” Robert Nasi, a Research Program Director at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), said in an email to Mongabay. He is normally very busy exploring his large outdoor enclosure and is always running around and having fun.&#8221; Adult Malayan (or Asian) tapirs have solid coats of black and white or grey. But babies are typically have brown hair with white stripes and spots. Baku&#8217;s distinctive spots and stripes have recently started to fade slightly, Stiven said, and &#8220;by the time he is six months old he will look more like the adult tapirs &#8211; with a stocky black body and a white or grey midsection.&#8221; &nbsp; The endangered Malayan tapir is the largest of the four tapir species, and occurs in southern and central parts of Sumatra (Indonesia), Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar. 							<![CDATA[We know that deforestation threats like timber extraction and wildfires are bad for the stability of the global climate because they cause massive amounts of carbon stored in forests to enter the atmosphere. Now research shows that there is also a climate cost to hunting wildlife species to extinction in the world’s tropical forests, which are estimated to store as much as 460 billion metric tons of carbon. The authors of a paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences say that a significant amount of the Amazon rainforest’s above-ground carbon stock could be lost if key seed-dispersing species continue to be over-hunted — even if the forest is protected from all other threats. Amazonian wildlife has been declining due to habitat destruction and over-hunting since the 1950s, but until now there hasn&#8217;t been much research done on the status of wildlife populations in hunted forests that have otherwise been left intact and kept free of human disturbance, according to Carlos Peres of the UK’s University of East Anglia. It turns out that even in these protected forests, as populations of larger mammal species like tapirs and monkeys decline due to hunting, the carbon content of the forest goes down. These hardy &#8220;living fossils&#8221; have survived multiple extinction events since the Eocene, yet their ability to survive the ongoing Anthopocene extinction remains uncertain. In Brazil, all that remains of lowland tapir populations are small isolated groups distributed across four distinct biomes: the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest, the Pantanal, and the Cerrado. Given that tapirs reproduce at the remarkably slow rate of one offspring per 14-month gestation period at best, these populations are naturally vulnerable. Combine this with anthropogenic threats such as habitat destruction, hunting, and exposure to infectious diseases and it&#8217;s no surprise that Brazilian tapirs are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Nearly a year ago, scientists announced an incredible discovery: a new tapir species from the western Amazon in Brazil and Colombia. The announcement was remarkable for a number of reasons: this was the biggest new land mammal discovered in more than 20 years and was only the fifth tapir known to the world. A hundred years ago, the Panama Canal reshaped global geography, allowing ships for the first time to bypass the long and perilous journey around Cape Horn by simply cutting through a continent. Now a new project, spearheaded by a media-shy Chinese millionaire, wants to compete with the infamous canal, building a 278-kilometer (173-mile) canal through Nicaragua. While the Nicaraguan government argues the massive project will change the country&#8217;s dire economic outlook overnight&#8212;Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti&#8212;critics contend it will cause undue environmental damage, upend numerous communities, and do little to help the people of Nicaragua. &#8220;Consider the Panama Canal,&#8221; Gerald Urquhart, a tropical ecologist with Michigan State University who&#8217;s worked in Nicaragua for 20 years, told mongabay.com. &#8220;One-hundred years after its construction, it is seen as a good thing for the people of Panama. However, until the Carter Trujillo Treaty returned the canal to Panama in 1999, the Panama Canal belonged to the United States and was inside of an occupied military zone. Panamanians were only allowed into the Canal Zone with certain credentials and did not benefit economically from the canal. But in a study published in PLOS ONE, researchers found a way around this complication by using tapir DNA to shed light on their behavior. The team sequenced and compared the DNA of individual tapirs to determine how related they were to one another, and in so doing, determine how far they dispersed throughout their habitat. This study marked the first time this specific technique had been used in the Amazon region. “I think that people who want to work with conservation should be open to use all kinds of tools, and interdisciplinary studies can bring very interesting results,&#8221; co-author Gabriela Pinho, from Brazil&#8217;s Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (National Institute of Amazonian Research), told mongabay.com. Pinho used DNA obtained from lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) in the Balbina Reservoir, created in 1987 by the Balbina Dam in the central Amazon. Despite their relatively large size and distinctive appearance, these stocky creatures are seldom seen by human eyes. Because of this, very little is known for certain about their behavior or the sizes of their populations. A new study, recently published in mongabay.com&#8217;s open access journal, Tropical Conservation Science, uses a new technique to examine the behavior and distribution of Baird’s tapir (Tapirus bairdii) in the southern forests of Mexico. One of four species of Central American tapir, Baird’s tapir &#8211; currently listed as Endangered and named after the famous American naturalist Spencer Fullerton Baird &#8211; was recently ranked 34th on a list of 4,000 at-risk animals in need of urgent protection by the Zoological Society of London. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), its population has halved in the last 30 years due to illegal hunting and loss of habitat. A Baird&#8217;s tapir. In December of 2010, a team consisting of researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of Michoacan of San Nicolas de Hidalgo, set up 25 camera trapping stations in the Biosphere Reserve of El Triunfo, a mountainous area thought to contain some of Mexico’s most diverse habitats, at a wide range of altitudes. In what will likely be considered one of the biggest (literally) zoological discoveries of the Twenty-First Century, scientists today announced they have discovered a new species of tapir in Brazil and Colombia. The new mammal, hidden from science but known to local indigenous tribes, is actually one of the biggest animals on the continent, although it&#8217;s still the smallest living tapir. Described in the Journal of Mammalogy, the scientists have named the new tapir Tapirus kabomani after the name for &#8220;tapir&#8221; in the local Paumari language: &#8220;Arabo kabomani.&#8221; Tapirus kabomani, or the Kabomani tapir, is the fifth tapir found in the world and the first to be discovered since 1865. It is also the first mammal in the order Perissodactyla (which includes tapirs, rhinos, and horses) found in over a hundred years. Moreover, this is the largest land mammal to be uncovered in decades: in 1992 scientists discovered the saola in Vietnam and Cambodia, a rainforest bovine that is about the same size as the new tapir. Photo courtesy of: Christopher Jordan. Nicaragua is a nation still suffering from deep poverty, a free-flowing drug trade, and festering war-wounds after decades of internecine fighting. However, like any country that has been largely defined by its conflicts, Nicaragua possesses surprises that overturn conventional wisdom. Not the least of which is that the Central American country is still home to big, stunning species, including jaguars, giant anteaters, pumas, and the nation&#8217;s heaviest animal, the Baird&#8217;s tapir (Tapirus bairdii). Still, not surprisingly given the nation&#8217;s instability, most conservationists have avoided Nicaragua. But tapir-expert Christopher Jordan, who has worked in the country for over four years, says he wouldn&#8217;t have it any other way. &#8220;The challenges make working here extremely interesting and rewarding. Nicaragua has an absolutely fascinating history, and the majority of challenges&#8230;are rooted in Nicaragua&#8217;s political, environmental, and economic history,&#8221; Jordan explains. &#8220;Attempting to understand and navigate the challenges therefore gives me the opportunity to delve into the country&#8217;s history in a new way and to learn new things.&#8221; Armed with camera traps, field data, and local allies, Jordan is on a mission to protect Nicaragua&#8217;s tapirs from extinction.
