							<![CDATA[JAKARTA — Indonesia recorded more allegations of human rights and environmental abuses linked to Chinese investments in transition minerals than any other country between 2023 and 2025, a new report says. It identifies the vast majority of problems with the country’s rapidly expanding nickel industry. The report by the Business &amp; Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRC) documented 323 publicly reported allegations across 24 countries during the three-year period, plus three confidential cases involving attacks on human rights defenders. That brings the total to 326 allegations for 2023-2025. The number of recorded allegations has also risen each year, from 51 in 2021 to 148 in 2025, bringing the five-year total to 434. That increase doesn’t necessarily mean the number of abuses themselves have tripled, as changes in reporting, monitoring, and the database can affect the figures. Still, the rising trend comes as investment in the minerals used in electric vehicles, batteries, and renewable energy technologies expands rapidly, raising risks for workers, Indigenous peoples, local communities, and the environment. The report also documented 18 attacks against human rights defenders across all 24 countries between 2023 and 2025, including cases involving judicial harassment, violence, and intimidation. Indonesia Of the 323 allegations analyzed in detail, 96 were in Indonesia, the highest of any country. The Democratic Republic of Congo was second with 52, followed by Myanmar with 36, Serbia with 32, and Zimbabwe with 20. Ninety of the 96 Indonesian allegations involved nickel. But various Indigenous Sámi leaders and activists are picking apart the company’s consultation process, studies and environmental safeguards as insufficient. According to the Saami Council and community land analysis, company plans to share the mining area with reindeer herders for half the year will leave some grazing lands unusable and disturb habitats and rivers with air pollution. Compensation plans, sources told Mongabay, include schools the community already has and the company made little effort to meaningfully dialogue with communities according to international law. The council is also concerned EU backing of the project as a strategic project has rushed the permitting process. “There are several groups in the community which will have nowhere to go in the winter,” Fredrik Prost, a Sámi artisan and handicraftsman from Viikusjärvi village, told Mongabay over a video call. “It might be the end for all of them or most of them. The 20-year mining permit held by PT Arumba Jaya Perkasa covers 1,818 hectares (4,492 acres) of forest and community plantations in the interior of Loleba village, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. It is just one of “hundreds of extractive mining company concessions” operating in North Maluku province, according to Transparency International, a nonprofit. Home deliveries in South Africa have surged in recent years. Delivery of food and groceries are overwhelmingly done using motorcycles, but Mlawuli’s black e-bike signals a possible change. She is one of about 600 food-delivery couriers on Cape Town’s roads who rent e-bikes from a company called Green Riders. The 11 residents of Maba Sangaji village, which is located in East Halmahera district, are alleged to have taken 18 sets of keys for heavy vehicles operated by nickel miner PT Position, a subsidiary of the Barki-controlled Harum Energy, on April 16-17. Police seized 10 machetes, five catapults, one spear, a bow, and several arrows. “Their actions showed gangsterism that disrupted the community and investment,” Bambang Surhayono, a spokesperson for North Maluku Police, said in a statement. Anto Yunus, a lawyer for the detained men, said they were victims of physical assault during the detention. “We have seen it and photographed it,” Anto said. Mongabay has not independently verified evidence of physical abuse. The seizure of blades, which the men use as farming tools, was not evidence of criminal intent, Anto said, calling on police to release the men and pursue remedial motions out of court under “restorative justice,” a form of mediation. “Demonstrate that the company’s financial losses were due to the citizens’ actions. If there were no losses, don’t make excuses,” he added. 							<![CDATA[JAKARTA — A deadly landslide in an Indonesian industrial park has reignited concerns over poor safety and environmental standards in the country’s booming nickel sector, a key supplier of battery metals for electric vehicles. The incident occurred on March 22 in a storage facility for mining waste, or tailings, in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), a sprawling estate that covers 5,500 hectares (13,600 acres) and hosts some 50 companies on the island of Sulawesi. The landslide buried four excavator operators under toxic mine waste. One worker survived, while two were found dead. The fourth worker remains missing and is feared dead. The victims were employees of PT Morowali Investasi Konstruksi Indonesia (MIKI), the contractor managing tailings operations for nickel producers PT QMB New Energy Materials and PT Huayue Nickel Cobalt. IMIP, which manages the industrial park, blamed the landslide happened after four hours of heavy rain. However, activists allege that poor tailings management and structural weaknesses may have triggered the deadly collapse. Both Huayue Nickel Cobalt and QMB New Energy Materials use a technology called high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) to process lower-grade nickel ore to extract battery-grade metal. The issue with this process is that it generates large volumes of waste, up to 100 tons of toxic tailings for every ton of nickel produced. Because they contain hazardous chemical compounds, these tailings need to be stored in tailings storage facility, essentially dams holding back the toxic sludge. It’s the world’s largest salt flat, spanning about 10,500 square kilometers (4,050 square miles). His family farmed potatoes on the outskirts of Colcha K, a community of around 1,000 residents in Nor Lípez province. But in around 2005, the freshwater spring that sustained their ranch ran dry, a loss Colque attributes to the effects of climate change and nearby mining operations. With no water, the family was forced to abandon its ranch and move into the city. “It was heartbreaking to watch our land dry up,” Colque told Mongabay. “Without water, there is no life.” Colque, now a teacher at Colcha K’s main elementary school, is among the residents alarmed by an influx of lithium mining plants that threaten the community’s remaining groundwater. In September 2024, Bolivia’s state-owned lithium company, Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB), signed a $970 million contract with Russia’s state-owned Uranium One Group to develop a new lithium plant within Colcha K municipality. Just two months later, YLB secured another deal, this time worth $1.03 billion with China’s CBC, a subsidiary of CATL, the world’s biggest manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, to establish two additional plants nearby.  At full capacity, these facilities are expected to produce almost 90,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate annually for production of lithium-ion batteries — enough to power 3 million electric vehicles. Barely a thicket remained on the buzz-cut upland above Umera village as the vehicle drove off to the nearby port. “That’s the PT Bartra Putra Mulia [BPM] nickel mine,” Manan, the village chief, told Mongabay Indonesia. Locals like Manan say life has become harder since 2020, when the company began operating here on Gebe, a remote island of fewer than 6,000 people in the Halmahera Sea, on Indonesia’s Pacific rim. When BPM first broke ground on its 1,850-hectare (4,570-acre) nickel mining concession here, the company’s executives told the elders in Umera they would have to relocate the Indigenous community’s shrines. Since then, residents say, water sources have run dry, community plantations have withered, and pollution from the mine has bled into the local fishing grounds. Manan and his neighbors in Umera are not alone in enduring change to the environment and way of life on Gebe. Mining companies are busy extracting the mineral wealth from seven nickel concessions beneath this 22,400-hectare (55,350-acre) island, which is around half the size of New Orleans. Research by Forest Watch Indonesia, a Jakarta-based environmental nonprofit, showed corporate land concessions occupy 876,000 hectares (2.2 million acres) on 242 small Indonesian islands. Of these concessions, 28% are for mining. Myriad criminal investigations have demonstrated extensive corruption in how licenses are awarded to industry. Sumean and his small family are among the contacted people part of the O’Hongana Manyawa Indigenous community (meaning “people of the forest”). The O’Hongana Manyawa are a nomadic hunter-gatherer tribe in Indonesia, many of whose members live in voluntary isolation. Their lives have for centuries been deeply intertwined with the tropical forests of Halmahera, and their traditions teach them not to damage it. However, the harmony of tribe and forest has been disturbed by a wave of nickel mining projects. The prized ore is destined for processing at the expansive Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), about 80 kilometers (50 miles) to the south. Yes, but many bumps in the road must be overcome to get there. Today’s electric bicycles come in a range of two-wheeled e-bikes and three-wheeled e-trikes, varieties to meet consumer and business needs, with many millions already sold. The addition of an electric motor to the traditional bicycle’s powertrain has not only expanded its range and usefulness for recreation and commuting, but propelled it into commerce, largely for making last-mile deliveries or as taxis. Among the e-bike’s advantages: Riders, combining pedal power with an electric assist, can climb steep hills, travel faster and farther. Electric bikes also allow the elderly or people with some medical limitations to ride. But before e-bikes reach their full societal potential, the industry and the world’s nations need to overcome some impediments, including manufacturing capacity, battery reliability and safety, transportation infrastructure and culture. Sitting on her porch overlooking a carefully kept garden full of flowers and vegetables, Aida Fernandes remembers the day she first started taking part in her village’s community-managed irrigation system. “I was 12 years old. My father got me a small hoe and told me to be careful not to fall into the water. I grew up connected to the land and was told I should take care of it,” says Fernandes, now a 45-year-old farmer. The ancient water channels, known as levadas, divert the water flow from the mountains to the plains. The collective efforts to maintain the levadas help retain the scant water resources and distribute them throughout the rugged landscape, keeping the slopes green even in the driest months. But the year Fernandes inherited the age-old tradition and took her share of responsibility for Covas do Barroso’s ancestral water system was also when she first encountered a researcher studying the region’s minerals. “I was tending my family’s cows and a geologist asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up,” Fernandes recalls. But the transition minerals that go into those batteries — cobalt, copper, graphite, lithium and nickel — have to be mined from somewhere, which can create its own problems. Most of them are found in or around Indigenous communities that oppose mining because of public health concerns and impacts on the environment. Many of the companies leading renewable energy development are also overlooking those issues, according to a new report from Oxfam. They haven’t developed adequate standards for protecting Indigenous communities and environmental defenders. “While large-scale mining has the potential to provide economic benefits in the form of taxes and jobs, the sector remains linked to major human rights abuses, gender-based violence, environmental harm, corruption and political capture,” the report said. Researchers from Cornell University and the Paul Scherrer Institute modeled different scenarios where major countries phase out oil-powered vehicles and switch to electric vehicles by 2050. &#8220;The big picture is the climate issue,” study co-author Fengqi You told Mongabay. “As we try to decarbonize transportation with electric vehicles, the challenge is, will we have enough materials and metals to manufacture enough EVs to meet demand in the future?&#8221; The analysis shows clear tensions between reducing emissions and straining supplies of essential EV battery metals. With 40% EV adoption by 2050, lithium demand could jump by 2,909% from 2020 levels. In a 100% EV scenario, lithium needs could grow by more than 7,500% by 2050. Nickel, cobalt and manganese requirements would also surge by more than 2,000% each. Mining these metals has major environmental impacts, typically requiring deforestation and a lot of water. Tailings from mining can pollute waterways with toxic chemicals like cyanide, mercury and arsenic if not properly contained. Many key battery metals are concentrated in Chile, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia and South Africa. The study indicates a rapid transition to EV use, coupled with cleaner electricity like solar, could substantially cut transportation emissions. The automotive industry is currently responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions, largely via tailpipe exhaust from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Replacing gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) is vital to having a chance of avoiding catastrophic global warming, according to experts. Yet across their respective supply chains, both ICEs and EVs have significant environmental impacts, including ongoing emissions. Experts argue that a circular economy approach — creating a closed loop supply chain powered by renewable energy that minimizes waste — is essential to curbing climate impacts but also addressing the automotive industry’s ballooning material burden, which will be greatly amplified by the green transition. Producing EVs based on a circular economy model (that reduces, reuses, and recycles materials), is considered a “key building block for a low-carbon mobility system, and… critical to achieving a 1.5° Celsius scenario,” to avoid catastrophic global warming, according to a report by the World Economic Forum. 							<![CDATA[EAST LUWU, Indonesia — Environmental journalists investigating the impact of nickel mining on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi have won a freedom-of-information ruling against local authorities, whose inability to release licensing information may point to an absence of licenses. The case centers on two nickel miners, PT Citra Lampia Mandiri (CLM) and PT Panca Digital Solution (PDS), operating in the vicinity of the Larona Malili River in East Luwu district, in the province of South Sulawesi. In December last year, the provincial information commission ordered the East Luwu environmental agency to publish the licensing documents of the two companies, which are accused of polluting the river with sediment. In a response, filed Jan. 10, the environmental agency said it was unable to comply because some of the licenses were still being processed at the environment ministry in Jakarta, while others would have to be requested directly from the ministry instead of the agency. The fact that the district environmental agency doesn’t have these papers — namely an environmental impact analysis, a waste dumping license, and a so-called borrow-to-use forest permit (IPPKH) — suggests the companies are operating without them, said Ady Anugerah Pratama, one of the lawyers who filed the freedom-of-information request. “Based on the environmental agency’s response, we can be sure to say that the companies don’t actually have the licenses, such as for hazardous and toxic waste management,” Ady said, noting that these papers are required under Indonesian law. Launched during a global commodities boom that emboldened the country, Bolivia’s lithium industry has struggled. The state lithium corporation, Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos, or YLB, has produced only a fraction of what was hoped. The solution, it thinks, is a series of new technologies designed by new companies. Six foreign firms – four from China, one from the U.S. and one from Russia – expect a decision from the Bolivian government about which will earn the opportunity to use new technologies, collectively called direct lithium extraction, or DLE, to speed up the country’s extraction of the world’s largest recorded reserves of lithium. With scant public information about neophyte technologies, the ecosystems supported by the salt flats, and the companies vying for the government tender, researchers and advocates are worried that YLB and officials are rushing into a billion-dollar development scheme that risks failure at the expense of communities and the environment. “I feel that Bolivia is somewhere down the line going to produce lithium on a commercial scale. It is a French territory located approximately 1,470 kilometers (900 miles) northeast of Brisbane, Australia. Despite its size, New Caledonia punches far above its weight ecologically. It houses the longest continuous barrier reef in the world and is internationally renowned for its plant species, over 80% of which are endemic. Despite the wealth nickel mining has produced on Grand Terre, the principal island of the nation, the extraction of the metal has had an ambiguous social and environmental impact on the country’s Indigenous people, the Kanak community. With the archipelago colonized by the French in the mid-19th century, there is still little formal recognition of the Kanak community’s legal and customary attachment to their traditional lands. The effect of this history is being played out at New Caledonia’s largest mine, Goro, and the plant that services it. Plagued by environmental and social issues, including five acid spills in ten years, the last decade at Goro has seen waste mismanagement, land clearing and sediment run-off into the sea. The McDermitt Caldera is the proposed site of the Thacker Pass lithium mine, an open-pit operation of Lithium Nevada Corp., a subsidiary of Lithium Americas. The site, in Nevada’s Humboldt county, sits on public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The project is currently in the preconstruction phase, after years of getting federal permits approved, and is expected to have a lifetime of 41 years. While environmental critics of Thacker Pass decry the extractive nature of all mining, proponents point to the expedited need for jobs and fossil fuel alternatives. The fisherman dumped out his catch, but it was only enough to feed his own family. There was nothing left over that could be sold, let alone shared with his extended family. The days when the fishermen of Obi Island would land a bounty of skipjack tuna have long passed, they say. It now takes them at least three days of fishing, venturing increasingly farther out to sea on their small wooden ketinting canoes, to bring back just 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of tuna. “It’s certainly harder now to look for fish in the Kawasi Sea,” Yoksan, referring to the main fishing area in the region, told Mongabay Indonesia in an interview last September. In February, the coalition sued Ramu NiCo, demanding not only that its Chinese owners pay restitution totaling 18 billion kina ($5.2 billion), but also that it stop dumping mine waste into the ocean and remediate the allegedly contaminated waters. Half a million people rely on the local fisheries in the Coral Triangle biodiversity hotspot, and the plaintiffs argue that their lives and food supply are at stake. The lawsuit appears to seek the highest environmental damages in the country’s history, and it relies on some of the biggest studies on the ocean dumping of mine waste ever conducted. “If it’s successful, it will be a landmark case, especially because no one has shot for environmental damages on such a big scale,” Ben Lomai, the lawyer representing plaintiffs in the case, told Mongabay in an interview. Neither company appears to have received permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, which must approve the practice, though factories pitching to dump waste in the ocean are already under construction. Images by Oliver Wearn. &nbsp; The idea is simple: Buy some cameras equipped with motion or heat sensors that automatically take an image or video when triggered by a passing animal, set the cameras out where you think the animal(s) will go, and let the animals take the images for you. Retrieve the images, and record all the interesting animals in them. Unfortunately, for many camera trap users, the reality has not been so easy. Cost, theft, and leakage A team of camera trapping experts surveyed researchers and conservation professionals to identify limitations to their successful use of remote cameras, assess their wish list of technological developments, and predict what next-generation camera trapping will look like. The 258 survey respondents from 52 countries use remote cameras for a variety of tasks: to inventory wildlife communities, answer questions about species’ distributions, abundance and behavior, obtain photos for artistic and outreach work, and monitor people, including potential wildlife poachers. Our understanding of the turtle hatchling’s life cycle, once considered “lost years” by scientists, is now coming together thanks to researchers such as Kate Mansfield and Autumn-Lynn Harrison, applying two emerging approaches: the tracking of species with tiny, lightweight tags and the innovative modeling of existing data sets. In “The political biogeography of migratory marine predators,” Harrison and colleagues sought to learn more about the lives of marine animals in the high seas. So they turned to the TOPP (Tagging Of Pelagic Predators) data set compiled years before by Barbara Block and Dan Costa. “One of the largest animal tracking data sets in the world,” according to Harrison, the TOPP study generated a valuable resource for researchers studying Pacific marine animals and large seabirds. 							<![CDATA[An extensive study of the leopard population in the wildlife-rich southern Indian state of Karnataka has indicated that these big cats are thriving there, buoying hopes the species’ genetic pool is stable in the region. Researchers from the Karnataka Forest Department (KFD) and the independent research organization Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) jointly surveyed the cats in protected forests, private lands, rocky outcrops and non-protected natural areas spanning a diverse landscape covering roughly 27,000 square kilometers (10,400 square miles). Karnataka is the first Indian state to scientifically estimate the population of leopards (Panthera pardus) over such a large area, following similar studies for tigers and elephants. The project took six years to complete and identified 363 individual leopards based on the rosette patterns on their bodies, which, like human fingerprints, are unique to each individual. The cameras captured more than 1.5 million images at sites across the state. Using statistical extrapolation from this sample, the researchers estimate that Karnataka is home to 2,500 leopards. Algorithms speed image analysis To aid such a large-scale survey, the researchers applied artificial intelligence to examine the collection of camera-trap images. This significantly reduced the time and human resources needed to complete the analysis. The groups notify each other of wildlife and/or intruders detected in camera images, allowing rangers to take quick action. As part of the discussion with Mongabay-Wildtech, WPS Executive Director Eric Schmidt and Program Director Carrie Smizik explained some of the strategies their team uses to prevent and respond to the twin challenges of deploying technology in remote and rugged areas and maintaining an effective corps of project volunteers. Volunteers can detect illegal intrusions into the reserves through a mobile phone app, send relevant images to a tech team, and have the information communicated to rangers on the ground within minutes. The NGO, Wildlife Protection Solutions (WPS), and local colleagues have installed over 100 surveillance cameras at 15 sites across more than 1,210 square kilometers (467 square miles) of wildlife reserves and national parks. The group’s centralized monitoring system, wpsWatch, transmits images of wildlife and potential human threats from these remote field cameras in real time. The innovative camera-volunteer combination has so far detected roughly 180 human intrusions into the various reserves. Camera traps provide photographic evidence of species that are rare, elusive, nocturnal or otherwise difficult to photograph in person. Since the 1990s, scientists have used camera traps to inventory vertebrate communities, confirm the presence of rare or cryptic species, determine a species’ range limits, examine mammal community structure, compare seasonal dynamics of animal presence, and estimate abundance of species with markings unique to individuals (e.g. tigers). Some three quarters of tropical forest vertebrates and a large proportion of the mammals live in the forest canopy. Arboreal animals may be particularly vulnerable to forest loss and degradation, yet they are difficult to study and monitor. Vegetation can be dense, and seeing animals 20 to 40 meters above the ground is challenging at best. Standard line transect surveys conducted on foot or in a vehicle can detect most primate species, which are mainly diurnal and often conspicuous, but rarely find other canopy species, especially those that are nocturnal or cryptic. The creature then rapidly decelerates to filter that first serving and gear up for the next one, repeating the entire behavior four to eight times in a single dive. Scientists are fixing rorquals, large baleen whales like the blue whale, with innovative sensory tags to begin to unravel the mechanics of this tremendous process called intermittent engulfment. A study recently carried out with devices consisting of new video recording technology and 3D accelerometry examined this lunge feeding behavior in unprecedented detail. Accurately comprehending this behavior sheds light on how these enormous species subsist on such small prey and supports their conservation. “These are the first tags that have both video cameras and the traditional sensor suite; it allows us to look at not only what the animal’s doing as a whole, but also what individual parts are doing,” said lead author David Cade, a PhD candidate in biology at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station. “We focused on what is the mouth doing while the animal is performing complex maneuvers to capture prey, when the skull and jaw are opening in comparison to peaking speed.
