							<![CDATA[Haiti is facing a profound political and economic crisis.  Functional governance that serves the interests of Haiti’s people is largely nonexistent.  One of the necessities to overcome this crisis is transitioning from the extractive environmental and economic model that has long plagued the country to one that is regenerative and good for Haitians and their environment. In July of 2021 President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated, and the current Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, is unelected. In fact, Haiti now has no elected government officials at local or national levels since the terms of 10 Senators expired on January 10, 2023. Armed gangs control over half of the neighborhoods and streets in Port-au-Prince, and have significant influence outside of the capital as well. They are inter-connected with many police and politicians.  Haiti’s electoral council is not currently able to organize elections, and the conditions for safe voting would not exist if they did.  Haiti is already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and the poverty and food crisis is growing. In 2022, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) ranked Haiti in the 10 worst hunger crises in the world, with 4.3 million (over 37% of the population) in need of immediate food assistance. The Caribbean nation, occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola is suffering from an escalating bout of political instability, following the assassination of Prime Minister Jovenel Moïse in 2021; just last month, another prominent politician, Eric Jean Baptiste, was shot dead. Add to that an expanding cholera outbreak and violent gangs blockading so many streets that the current government of Ariel Henry, the acting president and PM, is pleading for international intervention to help reopen vital supply routes to the impoverished populace. All this in a nation facing down formidable environmental crises, including extreme deforestation, erosion and freshwater issues. But amid these difficulties, Haitians remain resilient, with NGOs and individuals joining together to make a difference. A tropical reforestation project launched in 2019 offers a prime example: It is not only on pace to meet its 50,000 plantings goal, but hopefully will hit 60,000 plantings by the end of the year, according to the Haiti National Trust (HNT) and its international partner Re:wild, funded in part by celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio. In the coming months, he and his team will crisscross the country, helping replant mangrove marshes, conducting environmental workshops and training sessions, and starting alternative income projects for those whose livelihoods depend on cutting mangrove trees. The grant will allow his organization, which has been based largely in the northwestern town of Cap-Haïtien, to operate on a truly national scale for the first time. So why does he look ashen-faced and glum? “I just got off the phone with my assistant in [the Haitian capital] Port-au-Prince,” he says, slumped in front of the camera for our first video call. “He’s got PTSD from all the gunshots outside his house.” The grant comes just as Haiti’s growing social unrest has hit a decade-long high, making travel around the country perilous. Since the murder of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, lawlessness has spiraled out of control. The highways leading into and out of Port-au-Prince are controlled by gangs, while the city averages seven kidnappings a day. This past July, gang violence left more than 470 people dead, injured or missing in the sprawling Port-au-Prince shantytown of Cité Soleil. It&#8217;s about to publish, and I&#8217;ve asked him to help me get an interview with the country&#8217;s foremost hydrologist. I&#8217;m not comfortable writing a story about Haiti with no Haitian interviewees, I tell him, but so far no one has responded. &#8220;He said no,&#8221; texts P. &#8220;His house is in an area controlled by gangs.&#8221; Haiti has been gripped by paroxysms of unrest since 2018, the time of my last visit. So I&#8217;m not surprised when P. describes the current situation: no electricity, roadblocks on every intersection, banks and businesses closed, a man shot just outside his door. I&#8217;m not even surprised that someone in the heart of it all might not want to talk to a foreign journalist, even about something as apparently innocuous as hydrology. But one detail P. shares freezes my blood. Since yesterday, he tells me, his young family has been totally without water, as have residents of several areas of Haiti’s metropolitan region. That and soaring gas prices led to the current raging civil unrest. P. is waiting for things to quiet down in the street outside, then he is going out to find some, somewhere. Anywhere. In March, governments gathered to continue shaping the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) post-2020 global biodiversity framework to galvanize urgent action by governments and society to protect biodiversity in advance of its adoption later in the year. The need for these united efforts is more critical than ever. Biodiversity is declining at alarming rates, we are running out of time to slow the loss, and the future of our planet—from food and water to the global economy—depends on it. It is especially essential in developing nations, where 1 in 3 jobs depends on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Despite this reality, developed nations often lead biodiversity debates in language that fails to connect with the people and priorities of developing nations—who are often facing more immediate ongoing struggles, like hunger and poverty. These same nations are the most impacted by biodiversity loss and cannot be left out of a global framework of solutions—but this will require shifting how we frame the issue to recognize these nations’ daily realities. The Convention on Biological Diversity’s stated goals include ensuring biodiversity’s benefits, such as nutrition, food security, and livelihoods reach the “most vulnerable” people. To make this vision possible, a shift to the language of food security and protecting livelihoods can open biodiversity dialogue to developing nations in ways the current conversation is not. But when he and fellow scientist Rich Glor were out on a research expedition in Haiti in 2009, they noticed some peculiar behavior in some critically endangered Eugene’s anoles (Anolis eugenegrahami) released into a shallow stream. It appeared, much to their disbelief, that they were breathing underwater. “We were very surprised to find rebreathing in anoles,” Mahler, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Toronto, told Mongabay in an email. “An underwater respiratory behavior like this had never previously been recorded in vertebrates.” This initial observation kick-started a research project that spanned 12 years, involved 15 international scientists, and required research in several countries, including Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador. The project culminated in a recent paper published in Current Biology that revealed that several semi-aquatic anole species have the uncanny ability to breathe underwater — or rebreathe — for up to 18 minutes. “We were &#8230; surprised to find it in so many semi-aquatic anole species, many of which are not particularly close relatives,” lead author Christopher Boccia, who recently completed his Master&#8217;s degree at the University of Toronto, told Mongabay in an email. “Within the genus Anolis, semi-aquatic habitat specialization has evolved several times independently, and what’s neat is that each time this has happened, specialized underwater ‘rebreathing’ has also evolved.” Anolis eugenegrahami from Haiti is another anole species that can breathe underwater. These include the critically endangered Ekman’s magnolia tree (Magnolia ekmanii), known only from Grand Bois, and the Tiburon stream frog (Eleutherodactylus semipalmatus), also known as the foothill robber frog and once thought to be extinct. Recent research has found that Haiti is barely hanging on to its forest cover. The country has less than 1 percent of primary forest left, and many species found only in Haiti have now been lost. But there is some hope. Blair Hedges, director of the Center for Biodiversity at Temple University in Philadephia, U.S., and his colleagues, who have surveyed Haiti over the past nine years, have identified a few remaining biodiversity hotspots where the original forest cover and their species still survive. One of these hotspots is Grand Bois. During their surveys, Hedges’ team encountered several rare tree species on the mountain, including the Ekman’s magnolia that hadn’t been spotted in decades. By analyzing aerial photography and satellite images, researchers discovered that primary forest cover in Haiti shrank from 4.4 percent in 1988 to just 0.32 percent in 2016. They report that 42 of Haiti’s 50 largest mountains have lost all of their primary forests and the country is already undergoing a mass extinction of its wildlife due to habitat loss. “Haiti’s recognized as having the highest proportion of threatened amphibians in the world,” said S. It has also been named by some as the next big thing in regional tourism. But ecotourism in particular could become important for Haiti, with its rich land and sea biodiversity. Globally, the business of ecotourism generates more than $600 billion a year and is connected to hundreds of thousands of jobs. Haiti’s botanical diversity was described as “one of the richest” in the Caribbean by the US Forest Service in a report for USAID in 2010. It&#8217;s also under tremendous pressure and the clock is ticking. Less than 2 percent of Haiti remains forested. Endemic species of Haiti’s fauna – about 75 percent of their animals – are on the “brink of extinction,” according to USAID . Ecotourism could help turn the tide for Haiti’s 35 protected areas. The country’s coastline of 1,100 miles (1,775 kilometers), coastal shelf of over 1,900 square  miles (5,000 square kilometers), and five main offshore islands makes for a rich, biodiverse and varied regional ecology. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs now warns that 1.5 million Haitians are at risk of severe food insecurity, while 450,000 people face severe acute malnutrition, which can kill. &#8220;We have lost everything. If I do not find seeds and seedlings now, I will have to prepare them myself from remaining devastated crops. But it will take a year for them to be ready and more than six months after to harvest,&#8221; Nessilo Dorestant, a farmer in the southwest told the NGO ActionAid. &#8220;There is no possible way for my family to survive this long without food. All the farmers are in the same situation.&#8221; The government has said that 70 percent of agriculture in the southern part of the country has been wrecked. ActionAid is calling on international donors to step-up assistance to the disaster-struck country in order to avoid a hunger crisis. Haiti&#8217;s agricultural sector was already hard hit by Hurricane Gustav in August even before Sandy struck. Haiti declared a state of emergency on October 30th following Hurricane Sandy. In addition to inundating fields, the hurricane destroyed 6,274 homes and killed 54. The hurricanes this year follow mass devastation wrought by an earthquake in 2010, which killed upwards of 200,000 people and over a million homeless. 							<![CDATA[Latin American countries lose 4% of dry forests in 9 years Click image to enlarge Countries across Latin America lost 78,000 square kilometers of subtropical and tropical dry broadleaf forests between 2001 and 2010, according to a new satellite-based assessment [PDF] published in the journal Biotropica. The research &#8212; based on analysis of data from the MODIS sensor on NASA satellites &#8212; looked at vegetation change in ten biomes across 16,000 municipalities in Latin America and the Caribbean. It found that dry forest cover fell from 2.03 million sq km in 2001 to 1.95 million in 2010, or 3.8 percent during the period. By comparison, moist forests &#8212; popularly lumped together as &#8220;rainforests&#8221; &#8212; declined 1.9 percent from 9.52 million sq km to 9.34 million sq km. Dry forest loss was concentrated in Argentina (loss of 67,140 sq km), Paraguay (16,876 sq km), Bolivia (9,041 sq km), and Brazil (2,985 sq km) where industrial soybean agriculture and cattle ranching were fast-expanding. The Chaco ecosystem suffered the brunt of forest clearing as well as forest fragmentation. The authors note that conversion of the dry forest for agriculture and pasture &#8220;represents a major loss&#8221; in carbon stocks. The researchers found that El Niño conditions, which generally cuts rainfall and raises temperatures in the tropics, may have played a factor in one-fifth of the world&#8217;s total conflicts during the past 50 years. El Niño conditions occur every 3-7 years. While the study did not examine global climate change in conjunction with conflict, the study links a warmer world to a more conflict-prone one, as least in the tropics. &#8220;We can speculate that a long-ago Egyptian dynasty was overthrown during a drought. That’s a specific time and place, that may be very different from today, so people might say, &#8216;OK, we’re immune to that now.&#8217; This study shows a systematic pattern of global climate affecting conflict, and shows it right now.&#8221; Solomon M. Hsiang, the study’s lead author and PhD graduate of sustainable development at the Columbia University&#8217;s Earth Institute, said in a press release. Last August, a group of conservation agencies launched the Search for Lost Frogs, which employed 126 researchers to scour 21 countries for 100 amphibian species, some of which have not been seen for decades. After five months, expeditions found 4 amphibians out of the 100 targets, highlighting the likelihood that most of the remaining species are in fact extinct; however the global expedition also uncovered some happy surprises. Amphibians have been devastated over the last few decades; highly sensitive to environmental impacts, species have been hard hit by deforestation, habitat loss, pollution, agricultural chemicals, overexploitation for food, climate change, and a devastating fungal disease, chytridiomycosis. Researchers say that in the past 30 years, its likely 120 amphibians have been lost forever. The Search for Lost Frogs conducted by Conservation International (CI), the IUCN Amphibian Specialist Group (ASG), and Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC), hoped to find species whose status remained unknown. The unprecedented search did uncover surviving populations of the Cave Splayfoot Salamander (Chiropterotriton mosaueri) of Mexico (not seen since 1941), the Mount Nimba Reed Frog (Hyperolius nimbae) of Ivory Coast (last seen in 1967), and the Omaniundu Reed Frog (Hyperolius sankuruensis) of Democratic Republic of Congo (not seen since 1979). The report, &#8220;Pushback: Local Power, Global Realignment,&#8221; says that surging food and energy prices&#8212;and associated appreciation of land values&#8212;have led some governments to pause on land tenure reform, and in some cases, rollback hard-won rights. The report cites instances in Asia, Africa, and South America where large blocks of land traditionally used by local people have been sold or leased to industrial interests. Local people have seen little in return. In a conversation with mongabay.com, Andy White, coordinator of RRI, discussed the new report and broader rights issues. Haitians have been glimpsing that future for more than a year after a lack of healthy forests left them vulnerable to other disasters. Here’s a look at the take-home lessons from Haiti’s year of environmental ruin. In this moonscape called Haiti, there is no place to hide. Hurricane rains followed fast on the heals of the deadly January earthquake, pounding denuded forests and dirt-baked terrain, triggering mudslides, cutting through gullies, destroying anemic vegetation and washing deadly strains of cholera and sewage into rivers where people wash and drink. This once lush Caribbean island nation has been virtually cut clean of its former tree cover by an impoverished people desperate for fuel. Ninety-eight percent of the trees that used to sponge up flood waters, provide refuge for forest animals and buffer mudslides have been cut down. Saplings planted by an endless litany of well-intentioned charitable organizations are sawed down before they can grow by Haitians needing wood to burn. Haiti offers a heartbreaking illustration of the devastating consequences of narrowly valuing forests for only the commodities they provide, food and fuel, while ignoring the wealth of environmental services and protection forests offer. The species, some of which were last seen two decades ago, were discovered during a biological survey in the remnants of the country&#8217;s severely degraded tropical forests. 							<![CDATA[Erosion caused by hurricanes and large-scale deforestation may have contributed to last year&#8217;s devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people in Haiti, according to a geologist at the University of Miami. Analyzing stresses in Earth&#8217;s crust in the fault zone of last year&#8217;s January 12 quake, Shimon Wdowinski and colleagues suggest that redistribution of sediment from mountaintops to the lowland Leogane River Delta in the aftermath of four major tropical storms &#8212; including two hurricanes &#8212; in 2008 could have been enough to trigger the catastrophic shock. Near-complete deforestation of hillsides worsened erosion from the storms. Jeff Masters of Weather Underground&#8217;s WunderBlog summarizes the research, which was presented in December at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in San Francisco: Wdowinsky computed that the amount of mass eroded away from the mountains over the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake was sufficient to cause crustal strains capable of causing a vertically-oriented slippage along a previously unknown fault. This type of motion is quite unusual in this region, as most quakes in Haiti tend to be of the strike-slip variety, where the tectonic plates slide horizontally past each other. The fact that the 2010 Haiti quake occurred along a vertically moving fault lends support to the idea that the slippage was triggered due to mass stripped off the mountains by erosion over the epicenter, combined with the extra weight of the extra sediment deposited in the Leogane Delta clamping down on the northern portion of the fault. 							<![CDATA[An interview with Michael Jenkins, President and CEO of Forest Trends Over the past 30 years billions of dollars has been committed to global conservation efforts, yet forests continue to fall, largely a consequence of economic drivers, including surging global demand for food and fuel. With consumption expected to far outstrip population growth due to rising affluence in developing countries, there would seem to be little hope of slowing tropical forest loss. But some observers see new reason for optimism—chiefly a new push to make forests more valuable as living entities than chopped down for the production of timber, animal feed, biofuels, and meat. While are innumerable reasons for protecting forests—including aesthetic, cultural, spiritual, and moral—most land use decisions boil down to economics. Therefore creating economic incentives to maintaining forests is key to saving them. Leading the effort to develop markets ecosystem services is Forest Trends, a Washington D.C.-based NGO that also organizes the Katoomba group, a forum that brings together a wide variety of forest stakeholders, including the private sector, local communities, indigenous people, policymakers, international development institutions, funders, conservationists, and activists. 							<![CDATA[Not many people know the solenodon and the hutia, yet for the fortunate few that have encountered them, these strange little-studied mammals—just barely holding on in the Caribbean island of Hispaniola—deserve to be stars of the animal kingdom. &#8220;I could not quite believe it the first time I held a solenodon; I was in utter awe of this mesmerizing mammal. […] They have a long flexible snout which is all down to the fact that it is joined to the skull by a unique ball-and-socket joint. This makes it look as if the snout is almost independent to the rest of the animal. You can’t help but feel fascinated by the snout and inevitably it does make you smile,&#8221; Dr. Jose Nunez-Mino, the Project Manager for a new initiative to study and conserve the island&#8217;s last mammals, told mongabay.com in an interview. &#8220;When handled properly they are remarkably docile and relaxed which makes it very easy to observe them in the hand. […] All in all I think it is fair to describe solenodon as amazingly cute. 							<![CDATA[Google updated its satellite imagery of Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Thursday in hopes it would to help in the rescue, recovery and relief efforts. The images are available via Google Maps, enabling browsers to see damage on a street-by-street basis, enabling in-country organizations to deliver aid and medical care and attempt to rescue those trapped in collapsed buildings. As it has done in previous catastrophes, Google worked with its satellite imagery providers &#8212; in this case DigitalGlobe &#8212; to provide the updated imagery less than 48 hours after the disaster occurred. The images show before-and-after scenes of neighborhoods and the national palace as well as open areas which have become make-shift refugee camps. Google also announced a $1 million donation to organizations working on the ground in Haiti. On the Official Google Blog, the search giant highlighted several groups including Direct Relief, Yele Haiti, Partners in Health, Red Cross, World Food Program, Mercy Corps, Save the Children, Lambi Fund, Doctors Without Borders, and The International Rescue Committee. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck on at 4:53 pm on Tuesday, January 12th. It was centered about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Port-au-Prince. The quake is thought to have killed tens of thousands of people in the Western Hemisphere&#8217;s poorest country.
