The investigation has also reignited calls for stronger oversight and accountability to ensure conservation institutions protect both public resources and the wildlife entrusted to them. East Java prosecutors named Choirul Anwar a suspect on July 21, 2026, in connection with an alleged corruption case involving the operational budget of Surabaya Zoo between 2016 and 2024. Choirul was previously the president director of the Surabaya Zoo and Wildlife Park Regional Company. A preliminary audit conducted jointly with the East Java representative office of the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP) estimated state losses at 10.2 billion rupiah ($564,000), of which approximately 7.4 billion rupiah ($409,000) was allegedly diverted for the suspect&#8217;s personal benefit. Just days later, a separate outage disrupted power across parts of Java, Indonesia&#8217;s most populous island and economic center. While officials initially pointed to technical problems, state utility PLN later said constrained coal supplies had contributed to the Java outage. For energy analysts, the outages underscore a broader structural problem. &#8220;The dependence on a centralized, coal-dominated electricity system is a threat to energy supply security,&#8221; said Fabby Tumiwa, executive director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR). The president on Aug. 25 officiated the formation of the North Java Coast Management Authority to oversee the construction of a 700-kilometer (435-mile) seawall from Banten to Gresik, aimed at protecting 20 million coastal residents from erosion, tidal flooding and land subsidence. The $80 billion project will cover planning, financing and construction, with officials hoping to attract investors while addressing environmental and social impacts. Prabowo appointed retired Vice Admiral Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, who’s currently the vice fisheries minister, to lead the new government agency, with Darwin Djajawinata and Suhajar Diantoro serving as vice chairs. The agency will oversee planning, financing and construction of the seawall, addressing environmental and social considerations, and its head can adjust plans as needed. “Why two vice chairs? Market dynamics in Indonesia’s songbird trade appear to be driven more by species traits, such as mimicry, rather than species identity, according to a new paper published in the journal Biological Conservation. The researchers said understanding this trade aspect could uncover demand patterns that were previously overlooked, subsequently aiding in the development of strategies to reduce demand in a country whose songbird trade is one of the world’s most prolific wildlife trade sectors. “There is one big question that I get asked a lot: who are buying these birds found in the markets and for what? Why are they selling so many species?” study lead author Karlina Indraswari, who conducted the research during her Ph.D. studies at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, told Mongabay by email. “Then it continued to the question, why are there so many species recorded in the supply side, yet very little info from the demand side? &#8230; Therefore, can we, at least, get a rough idea of why certain species are traded. The recording, which shows the endangered big cat strolling calmly past the lens, was obtained after officials followed up on a hiker’s report of a leopard sighting along a trail. Dhidhit Suryono, field coordinator team leader at Tahura Mangkunagoro, said the cameras were installed for two full weeks around the reported site to ensure optimal observation results and increase the chance of capturing footage. Indonesian NGO Walhi has recently published its findings from stationary and mobile monitoring of the air quality at five locations in the vicinity of the Benowo waste-to-energy plant in Surabaya city between November 2024 and January 2025. The results show exceeding safety levels of PM2.5 and PM10, which are tiny air pollution particles about the size of dust or smoke, which can slip into the lungs, with the former being so small it can enter the bloodstream and affect the whole body. “The most dramatic spikes occurred between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., when the incinerator was running,” said Wahyu Eka Setyawan, the executive director of Walhi East Java. Rice-farming families in Cokrokembang village, Pacitan district, have for more than a year been affected by contaminated water from the Kedung Pinihan River, which irrigates the community’s rice fields. The farmers attribute this pollution of the river to waste from the copper mine operated by PT Gemilang Limpah Internusa (GLI). “We received information … that GLI was temporarily stopped by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” Cici Roudlotul Jannah, the head of the district environmental agency, told Mongabay Indonesia in a text message. Rice farmers across Indonesia have faced overwhelming difficulties since the severe drought caused by the 2023 El Niño and positive Indian Ocean dipole. The situation was made worse by rising input costs and limited access to affordable fertilizer following Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, two of the world’s biggest fertilizer exporters. Contamination from the mine, located in Kluwih village, is suspected of seeping into the Kedung Pinihan River. The pollution has visibly affected the water, with boulders in the river turning a yellowish orange, and farmers reporting that their crops are failing to develop. More Javan leopards (Panthera pardus melas) in a given habitat correspond to higher richness and abundance of other animals that coexist in the same location, said a group of wildlife researchers in a recently published paper. The authors said the study was the first extensive look at what animals the leopard might hunt, using camera traps across all four different types of terrestrial regions on the Indonesian island of Java. Led by Andhika C. Ariyanto from the University of Twente in the Netherlands and Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the authors studied 7,461 individual photos taken over a combined period of nearly 13,000 days by camera traps between 2020 and 2022 in four national parks. Hariadi, affectionately known as “Prof HK,” was born in Jombang, East Java province, on April 24, 1958, and died at the age of 66. Prayers were also held at the Al Fithrotus Syafiiyah mosque to commemorate Hariadi, a pioneer of forestry governance and prominent advocate for Indigenous rights in Indonesia. Reza Kartodiharjo, Hariadi’s eldest son, said his father passed away before dawn on the morning of June 2. He had appeared in good spirits the previous evening while sharing a meal with his wife, until his health deteriorated overnight. Hariadi advised Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the country’s anti-corruption agency, known as the KPK. He was an author of books on forestry governance and published numerous papers in academic journals. His 2021 book, Sins and the Future of Our Planet, explored themes of technology and democratic oversight of Indonesia’s forests. In 2015, Hariadi became a commissioner on a national inquiry established by the National Human Rights Commission, known as Komnas HAM, into conflicts between Indigenous peoples and the state in forest areas. The inquiry followed a ruling by the Constitutional Court in 2013 that affirmed Indigenous peoples’ rights to their own customary forests. He blames pollution from a copper mine in the hills above his field operated by PT Gemilang Limpah Internusa (GLI). Rice fields in the area that use water from other sources seemed to be thriving. And the fields farther downstream were healthy enough. However, Parno’s rice plants appeared stunted, wilting under the sun with a sickly yellow tint. GLI’s copper mine is located in the upland in Kluwih village, around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) northwest of Parno’s farm. Waste from the mine appears to have seeped into the Kedung Pinihan River, which runs through a valley passing Cokrokembang’s rice fields. The pollution in the river is visible with the naked eye: some rounded boulders in the water have turned a lurid yellowish orange, while mud deposits thickened the further Mongabay followed it upstream toward the mining concession. One canvas, propped up on a roadside verge, featured caricatures of the three candidates vying to replace President Joko Widodo after a decade in government; it’s title, in Indonesian, was “Elections in the Grip of the Oligarchy.” A collection of 10 caricatures and cartoons by artist Toni Malakian illustrated a satirical chronology of the Lapindo mudflow spanning almost two decades, right here in Sidoarjo, beginning with the onset of the disaster in 2006 to the ongoing fallout experienced by its victims in the present day. Saturi’s story reflects the plight of farmers more broadly in the world’s fourth-largest coffee-producing nation, where the weather has lurched from extreme rainfall caused by a La Niña climate pattern that lasted from 2020-2022, to a punishing drought sparked last year by El Niño. This year’s coffee harvest in Indonesia is forecast to be the lowest in more than a decade. Jember farmers blame El Niño, in which above-average temperatures in the Pacific produce dangerously dry weather over Southeast Asia. Torrential rain over a long period can easily drown coffee flowers before they produce beans, while sustained heat and a deficit of water typically stunt coffee flowers and dry up the tree’s leaves. At dawn, fishers are often seen returning from the Java Sea to unload their cargo in port, where a shipyard backs onto a road hugging the north coast of the world’s most-populous island. Ordinarily, Wawan sends the animal’s meat and fins two hours south to Surabaya, Indonesia’s second city. The fins usually fetch 1.2 million rupiah ($76) per kilogram (2.2 pounds), while the animal’s leather is sold by the piece to artisans making accessories and other products. Due to customs requirements, Wawan relies on third parties to ship the goods. “It’s done through other people, because you can&#8217;t do it if you don&#8217;t have permission,&#8221; he told Mongabay Indonesia at the port. Wildlife is the world’s fourth-largest illegal market after drugs, people and fake goods. Trade in rare animals is believed to be worth tens of billions of dollars every year, owing to clandestine demand for everything from elephant ivory to tiger skins. In 2019, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an international organization, elevated several species of guitarfish, a family of rays, from “vulnerable” to “critically endangered.” The upgrade included the bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma), a ray that grows up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) and has historically been prized for its meat and fins. The latest population estimate for the Javan hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi) is 511 breeding pairs, an increase from 325 pairs in 2009, according to the research. It added that 70% of the species’ habitat lies within protected areas across the islands of Java and Bali, while the remainder is in farmland. “Improved habitat distribution data are needed to better estimate the current population size and to facilitate development of new strategies and action plans,” says the study published Nov. 21 in the Journal of Raptor Research. The researchers conducted field surveys between 2008 and 2019 by observing the nests of eagle couples and revisiting them during the breeding season, and also collected information through interviews with local communities, key informants from local nongovernmental organizations, government officials, and site managers. To analyze the data, they included improved study methods, such as higher-resolution satellite imagery, which helped in identifying the important habitats. A group of women in Sumenep district of East Java province is leading a protest against the local government’s proposal to develop a salt farm on 20 hectares (49 acres) of land on the coast of Gersik Putih village. They say the plan could jeopardize their job as fishers and the sustainability of the marine ecosystem on which they have for generations depended for their livelihoods. The fishers also believe that the salt ponds have exacerbated the flooding there in recent years. “For those who don’t have a land for agriculture, like me, I’m grateful that God has gifted me the sea, and it’s become my source of livelihood,” Maimunah, a fisherwoman who is one of the movement&#8217;s leaders against the salt farm development in Gersik Putih, told Mongabay-Indonesia in a recent interview. “The ocean is rich. The Masalembu archipelago is dotted in the Java Ssea between the islands of Java and Borneo, an area that’s one of the most heavily trafficked fishing zones in Indonesia. The petition, submitted with support from fisheries NGOs, are demanding the designation of a traditional fishing zone, an essential or protected ecosystem area, and the enforcement of a strict ban against cantrang, a ubiquitous form of seine net. “Because the fish stocks have now been depleted, have been exploited way too much, many [large-scale] fishers now go to Masalembu and other small islands off the northern Java coast,” Fikerman Saragih, from the Coalition for Fisheries Justice (KIARA), one of the NGOs advocating for the small fishers, told Mongabay Indonesia. Among the landed crates of fish, there were sharks and rays that appeared to be different types. Rizal, one of the many fish buyers who had stood by at the port since early morning, looked happy at the sight of that day’s catches. He eventually collected the biggest volume among the group with some 10 tons of both sharks and rays. Rizal’s fish handlers immediately got to work and cut off the sharks&#8217; fins. Shark fins are the most valuable for Rizal. He could only get as much as 14,000 rupiah ($0.93) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of shark meat, but the fins could be sold for millions of rupiah per kilogram. The longer the fins, the higher the price. For those measuring 15 centimeters (6 inches), the price point is between 500,000-700,000 rupiah ($33-46) per kilogram, while those measuring 40 cm (16 in) are priced at 2 million-2.4 million rupiah ($132-$159). Rizal said his buyers, who are from other cities in Java such as Surabaya, Pati, Tegal and Jakarta, would typically pay for 50-100 kg (110-220) of the fins. Thanks to a proliferation of unregulated wells, however, Pasuruan risks losing that bounty. The problem, experts say, is the wasteful discharge of millions of liters of water from hundreds of artesian wells, often reaching dozens of meters below the surface, that aren’t equipped with valves for controlling the discharge, leading to excessive waste. “This is a serious problem with water management in Pasuruan,” said Ni’matul Khasanah, a soil scientist and ecological modeler with World Agroforestry (known by the acronym ICRAF), which has an office in Bogor, Indonesia. “Water keeps coming out — it gets wasted into the sea and goes unused.” An artesian well is a type of well in which natural pressure, rather than a pump, brings the water to the surface. Deep-bore wells serve as critical infrastructure across the Indonesian archipelago. They helped combat major wildfires on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo in early 2014 and late 2015. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia had 3,404 state-funded deep-bore wells as of 2020, when the government’s deep-bore well program was taken over by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. &nbsp; The wells in Pasuruan, used for irrigating farmland, were often built by farmers, sometimes with funding from village administrations, according to Lisa Tanika, an ICRAF water management specialist. It was off Sumenep where it ran aground during bad weather. The barge is still visible about 1.5 kilometers, or nearly a mile, offshore, according to Haerul Umam, a resident of Ambulung village in Sumenep. “The boat is still there,” Haerul confirmed to Mongabay Indonesia in an April 5 text message. When the vessel failed to continue its journey, two other boats, the Dolphin and WM Fortune I, arrived to pick up the coal. The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries announced on Nov. 19 a deal with coal power plant operator PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Paiton to produce the bricks using fly ash and bottom ash, or FABA, left over from burning coal. “We see the potential use of FABA in coastal and marine areas as coral transplantation media, tetrapods, and fishers’ houses,” Pamuji Lestari, the ministry’s acting head of marine zoning, said in a statement. She added her office would ensure that the development of these ash bricks would adhere to environmental standards and regulations. Earlier this year, the government removed FABA from its list of hazardous waste, in response to lobbying efforts by industry groups that want to be allowed to sell coal ash to the construction industry. 							<![CDATA[PASURUAN, Indonesia — Authorities in Indonesia have managed to put out a wildfire that had been tearing through a national park that’s home to rare leopards and eagles. The fire started on the morning of Oct. 9 in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, home to the iconic Mount Bromo, a popular tourist attraction. It spread into the park from community lands, according to park spokesman Syarif Hidayat, though the cause remains unclear, he said. Firefighters were able to put out the fire on Oct. 10. Fires occur almost every year in the national park, usually due to farmers burning land to clear it for planting, or tourists setting up campfires or discarding cigarette butts, according to Rosek Nur Sahid, co-founder of conservation group ProFauna Indonesia. It was second major fire to occur in the park this dry season. The park will intensify patrols to prevent more of them, Syarif said. Spanning an area nearly the size of the nation’s capital, Jakarta, the park is home to 38 protected species, including the Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) and the Javan hawk-eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi), both of which are endangered. To get an update on this iconic species, Mongabay interviewed Wibisono via email, who shares what is currently known and makes the case for leopard conservation: &#8220;People living in Java should preserve the leopard to assure that the remaining forest ecosystems are healthy for human living. The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) and the East Kalimantan provincial chapter of the Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam) filed the application for a judicial review with the Constitutional Court in Jakarta on June 21. Two other plaintiffs in the suit are identified as victims of mining activity. The suit seeks what’s known as a judicial review of nine articles in the amended mining law. It alleges that these nine articles contain stipulations that could lead to unbridled exploitation by a mining industry that already operates with impunity toward environmental and social rules. Nurul Aini, a 46-year-old farmer from Sumberagung village in Banyuwangi district, East Java province, is one of the plaintiffs. She and her fellow villagers have for years fought against gold mining activity on Mount Tumpang Pitu, where they live. She said the mining activity had destroyed the environment and harmed the locals in the process, with dust from the detonations carried out in the operations forcing the villagers to wear masks, even when they sleep. The most harmful impact is the destruction of Mount Tumpang Pitu, Nurul said. She added that water resources, which spring from the mountain, have been depleted since the mining began. “I’m responsible for the future generation. 							<![CDATA[Parrots, inhabiting pan-tropical and temperate regions across the world, are highly sought after as pets due to their attractive colors, calls and clever nature. But some of the trade in these birds involves the illicit market, a significant concern with nearly one-third of the 400 known parrot species at risk of extinction. A recent study published in Biological Conservation applies a criminological model known as CRAAVED to shed new light on key drivers of the illegal parrot trade in Indonesia. The country has the highest diversity of parrot species, with 89 currently recorded, including the critically endangered yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea), endangered purple-naped lory (Lorius domicella), and vulnerable salmon-crested cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis). CRAAVED is an acronym for seven factors influencing wildlife trade: concealable, removable, accessible, abundant, valuable, enjoyable, and disposable. Originally developed in the 1990s, the model is used to help understand theft variation of commonly stolen products; in this case, parrots. According to the study, parrots form the most traded animal taxon, and therefore may provide “some of the best sources of data for investigating the causes and consequences of the animal trade.” The research team used six market and seizure data sources collected over a period of two decades, 1997 to 2018, from six provinces across Indonesia. The data sets indicated consistent trends in illegal trade practices for parrot species common to each province. The significant population decline prompted the government in 2014 to ban the intentional capture and trade of mantas, but not of devil rays. “The question now is that when a ray is caught alive and the conservation effort is to release it back, what is actually the survival rate when it’s released back into the ocean?” Sila Kartika Sari, a marine researcher with the conservation collective Mobula Project Indonesia, told Mongabay recently. After inspecting the fish on display at a market at Brondong National Fisheries Port, Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, and his entourage of local officials and the minister of fisheries went out to the docks, where they were met by a throng of fishermen who yelled greetings in Javanese, his native language. Many of the fishermen previously used seine nets, known locally as cantrang, and wanted to obtain permits to resume using the devices in the wake of the lifting of a ban on their use, Agus Mulyono, chairman of the local chapter of the All Indonesian Fishermen’s Association (HNSI), said at the event. The ban on seine nets, which are highly effective, if indiscriminate, tools for sweeping up large amounts of fish, was lifted last November partly on the grounds that it was difficult to enforce, the fisheries ministry said at the time, adding that permits would only be issued to boats already using the nets. Indonesian wildlife experts last week publicly announced their findings from the necropsies conducted on 34 of the 52 short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) that washed up on Madura Island this past February. They examined tissue samples from the whales’ bodies, including the stomach and the melon, the fatty round organ at the front of the head that’s key to the animals’ use of echolocation. The experts said the cause of death of the alpha pilot whale, a female, was shortness of breath caused by damaged air sacs in her lungs, and hunger. Dehydration and exhaustion were found to be the cause of death for the rest of the pod. They also found severe inflammation in the alpha whale’s melon, which most likely disrupted her ability to navigate and subsequently led her and the rest of the pod to wash ashore. Pilot whales are very social animals that travel in groups. “This colony was traveling in a triangle form with the youngest at the back. Activists have denounced the escalation in the conflicts, saying businesses shouldn’t be taking advantage of the country’s focus on dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic to further their own — often illegal — interests. On March 21, security personnel from the palm oil firm PT Artha Prigel clashed with farmers in Lahat district, in South Sumatra province. Two farmers were killed in the fighting, the latest flare-up in a conflict that goes back nearly three decades. Locals accuse the company — a subsidiary of the Sawit Mas Group, which supplies oleochemicals to Procter &amp; Gamble — of stealing their land. In a form of reprisal, in September 2018 the locals took over nearly a tenth of the company’s 2,000-hectare (5,000-acre) plantation and began cultivating their own crops The clash last month broke out as security guards demanded that the locals leave the area they had taken over.
