Honduran sunset – Honduras’ emissions from deforestation 40 times its emissions from fossil fuels use

Sunset in Roatan, Honduras. Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras. It is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) long and is famous for its diving. In recent years the island has become a popular site for real estate investment by North Americans.

CO2 emissions from fossil fuels use in Honduras have doubled since 1990.

The country lost more than 37 percent (2.7 million hectares) of its forest cover between 1990 and 2005. Emissions from deforestation over the period were likely more than 800 million tons of CO2. By comparison, emissions from fossil fuels use from 1990-2005 were about 22 million tons according to CDIAC.
