The country lost more than 37 percent (2.7 million hectares) of its forest cover between 1990 and 2005. Emissions from deforestation over the period were likely more than 800 million tons of CO2. By comparison, emissions from fossil fuels use from 1990-2005 were about 22 million tons according to CDIAC.
