Don’t get cuckoo over the colder weather – come inside where it’s warm and hang out with this Bronx Zoo guira cuckoo couple. These Brazilian natives have an orangey breast and look like punk-rockers. Photo by Julie Larsen Maher © WCS |
The guira (Guira guira), a cuckoo, is one of the most common birds of Brazil. Although they live in groups of six to 18 individuals, they have a tendency to form couples.
In this photo, taken by Julie Larsen Maher of the Wildlife Cosnervation Society, a pair of guira cuckoo are huddled at the Bronx Zoo’s World of Birds. This species and hundreds of other avians can be seen everyday at the Bronx Zoo.
