    Spanish company Ferry Group is to invest €42/US$55.2 million in a project for the production of biomass fuel pellets in Bulgaria. The 3-year project consists of establishing plantations of paulownia trees near the city of Tran. Paulownia is a fast-growing tree used for the commercial production of fuel pellets.     Tonight at 9pm, BBC Two will be showing a program on geo-engineering techniques to 'save' the planet from global warming. Five of the world's top scientists propose five radical scientific inventions which could stop climate change dead in its tracks.     Archer Daniels Midland, the largest U.S. ethanol producer, is planning to open a biodiesel plant in Indonesia with Wilmar International Ltd. this year and a wholly owned biodiesel plant in Brazil before July, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. The Brazil plant is expected to be the nation's largest, the paper said. Worldwide, the company projects a fourfold rise in biodiesel production over the next five years.     Finnish engineering firm Pöyry Oyj has been awarded contracts by San Carlos Bioenergy Inc. to provide services for the first bioethanol plant in the Philippines. The aggregate contract value is EUR 10 million. The plant is to be build in the Province of San Carlos on the north-eastern tip of Negros Island.     In order to reduce fuel costs, a Mukono-based flower farm which exports to Europe, is building its own biodiesel plant, based on using Jatropha curcas seeds. It estimates the fuel will cut production costs by up to 20%. New Vision (Kampala, Uganda) - Feb. 12, 2007.

    Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited is to build a biofuel production plant in the tribal belt of Banswara, Rajasthan, India. The petroleum company has acquired 20,000 hectares of low value land in the district, which it plans to commit to growing jatropha and other biofuel crops.     In order to meet its Kyoto obligations and to cut dependence on oil, Japan has started importing biofuels from Brazil and elsewhere. And even though the country has limited local bioenergy potential, its Agriculture Ministry will begin a search for natural resources, including farm products and their residues, that can be used to make biofuels in Japan. Biofuel demand to drive global palm, soy prices - expert

Palm and soy oil prices are expected to rise in coming months as the world's appetite for "green" fuel grows and a greater quantity of oils is diverted to meet energy demand, a top industry analyst said on Sunday. Biofuel plants are sprouting at a dizzying pace as nations from Europe to Asia seek ways to cut dependence on crude oil, curb greenhouse gas emissions and boost agriculture.

Crude palm oil futures at the Malaysian exchange will range between 1500 ringgit (€318/US$407) and 1700 ringgit (€361/ US$461) per tonne by March 2007, with a strong possibility of a spike beyond 1800 (€382/US$488) per tonne, Dorab Mistry, director of London-based Godrej International Ltd, told a global edible oils conference. A price of 1500 ringgit per tonne roughly equals US$55.7 per barrel of oil equivalent (boe), 1800 ringgit equals US$66.8 per boe.

"We can see quite clearly that there is now a link between the price of crude oil and world vegetable oil prices," said Mistry, whose price forecasts are watched keenly by the industry and analysts. "I expect a steadily rising market provided NYMEX crude oil prices remain in the range of $60-70 per barrel." He said crude soy oil prices will rise steadily to about $600 per tonne free on board from current levels of $520, while RBD palmolein will trade between $450 and $525 per tonne free on board.

Mistry had in February forecast that crude palm oil futures would trade in the range of 1400 to 1600 ringgits between March and September 2006. Crude palm oil futures are currently ranging around 1540 ringgits in the Malaysian futures markets. Almost 9 million tonnes of major oils and fat is being used to meet energy requirements, either by way of biodiesel production or direct burning, out of total consumption of almost 120 million tonnes, Mistry said.

The expert added that the supply and demand situation of edible oil for the year ending September 2007 was quite bullish. He said the demand for edible oil for the period was set to grow by 6.5 million tonnes, while only about 3 million tonnes of additional supplies were expected by way of higher soy and palm oil output.

The big expansion in biodiesel production in Brazil, one of the largest exporters of soyoil along with Argentina, will hamper shipments from the South American nations after March 2007, Mistry said. "My estimate is that Brazilian exportable surplus of soyoil will fall by at least 10 percent in 2006-07 and by a massive 40 percent in 2007-08," Mistry said [entry ends here].

Tropical grasses in Germany as an energy feedstock

Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense) and the common sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) are widely distributed over the humid tropics and subtropics where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. In Africa, the elegant soghums are a typical element of the landscape. In the near future, they might turn up in Europe as the search to find the most suitable energy crops intensifies.

The German federal Centre for Breeding Research on Cultivated Plants (Bundesanstalt für Züchtungsforschung an Kulturpflanzen) launched a project studying the biomass production potential of these two crops, and its first results are promising.

Biomass crops are set to make up an ever important part of Germany's energy landscape, with special attention going to the production of biogas from dedicated crops and to crops for cellulosic ethanol. Currently, the country's main energy crop is maize, followed by rye which is cultivated in drier regions. In highly developed crop rotation systems, plants that are new and exotic to Central European agriculture could be used. It seems like both sorghum and sudan grass offer an optimal combination with rye.

Dr Steffen Roux (pictured next to a hybrid between sorghum bicolor and sorghum sudanense) heads the project in Gross Lüsewitz. It is no coincidence that the tropical grass species bear some resemblance with maize and with rye, he says, because, evolutionary speaking, they belong to the same family. Both exotic plants use water resources very efficiently, withstand moderate droughts, grow very fast, and have a high biomass productivity. Rye grows fast as well and is traditionally harvested in June, after which several months remain before winter sets in. It is in this period that a second crop can be grown, provided it is a true sprinter. The sorghums and hybrids that are being developed, are. Roux: "Because of its robustness, rye grows well in lighter soils in North-Eastern germany. The crop has many uses either as a grain crop for human consumption or as animal fodder, for ethanol and lactic acid production, and for the production of biomass for energy. When it comes to the latter use, rye has the advantage that it grows fast and makes room for a second crop. Agro-economically speaking, this makes biomass production for energy very attractive."

The research project started in june 2006, and aims to study whether sorghum and a hybrid between sorghum and sudan grass are suitable in Germany as crops to follow rye. Genetic research into sorghum varieties and species will determine which kinds of grass will withstand the German climate and conditions best. After this has been determined, an active breeding and selection program will be launched.

The project in Gross Lüsewitz is part of a bigger program into new crop rotation systems utilizing exotes for energy. Six more test sites located in (southern) Germany will determine which environmental factors are at play for which kinds of crops. In total, the site in Gross Lüsewitz is analysing 16 sorghum and sudan grass varieties, that are being compared to hybrids of the two plants.

Even though there are no final results yet, Dr Roux is already impressed: "The sorghums and the hybrids were sown on June 27 and despite the strong summer heat and drought during the first 40 days -- we only had 10mm of rain -- the grasses are growing fast and very homogeneously. Growth rates showed very rapid growth, and today, three months after the introduction of the crops we have reached a height of 2.70m (9 feet). It seems like above ground dry matter yields will be respectable and point to a potentially interesting utilization of the crop as biomass for energy."

Austria opens first biogas station for cars

Earlier we reported about Germany opening its first biogas tank station for cars, indicating that it means a shift in longterm biofuel strategies, away from liquid fuels towards gas. Sweden is Europe's leader on the front, with thousands of cars already utilizing the renewable green gas. Now Austria is following the example; by 2010, the Austrian government wants at least 50,000 cars on biogas.

Worldwide, some 5 million cars use CNG and they could all switch to biogas without modifications of the engine or the gas system. We present this info because the gas offers to be a promising alternative fuel for the developing world, where biogas can produced relatively easily and locally from waste streams and from dedicated biomass. In the highly developed world, biogas as a transport fuel is also seen as a stepping stone towards a possible hydrogen future.

In Austria, OMV opened the first station near Linz in Upper-Austria, and calls it a 'Bio-CNG' pump. OMV's CEO Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer told a press conference that the European Union wants natural gas cars to take up a share of 10% by 2020. Unlike natural gas, biogas is CO2-neutral and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, producing "almost no particulate matter", which is why it is being seen as an ideal fuel. Ruttenstorfer says biogas production costs are currently slightly higher than natural gas, but should come down when scale advantages are reached.

OMV's first station offers a mix of natural gas with 20% biogas. The pilot pump delivers biogas for 10 to 15 cars daily. By 2010, OMV wants to have a robust infrastructure with 80 tank stations ready for full use by thousands of cars each day. Biogas can be obtained from the anaerobic fermentation of organic matter, be it household or industrial waste, or dedicated energy crops. After purification, the green gas becomes of a quality comparable to natural gas, which allows it to be introduced into the natural gas grid.

Malaysia to ensure adequate palm oil supplies for food use

Malaysia will ensure adequate supply of palm oil for use in cooking, the country's Minister for Plantation Industries and Commodities Peter Chin Fah Kui said.

The Southeast Asian country, the world's largest producer of the vegetable oil, will make sure that the commodity's supply for blending in biofuels won't be at the expense of its availability for food use, Chin said at an edible oils conference in India's financial hub Mumbai today.

Palm oil is largely used as a cooking fat, led by demand in China, India and Pakistan, and for making soaps, detergents and industrial lubricants. It is increasingly used to derive methyl esters for biodiesel.
