Even though Biopact has been up and running for a few months only, we have received cosiderable interest in our perspective and in our work, from many different parties. Besides doing journalistic work on a continuous basis, we have cooperated with NGOs, companies, media and government agencies on a number of projects. A selection of our most recent work: Consulting for a major documentary August - September 2006
Dutch television chain and producer VPRO made a two-part documentary on
the future of energy, entitled "Energy Wars. The battle for power in
the 21st century", featuring amongst others Thomas Friedman. The film
is to be aired on Nederland 3 / VPRO's Tegenlicht program on October
30, 2006 (part one) and November 6, 2006 (part two). The producers
contacted Biopact for consulting work because researchers for the
program thought our perspective points to a potential scenario for the
future of global energy developments. Feasibility study on tapping Nipa fruticans for ethanol in the Niger Delta September 2006 - ongoing A Nigerian NGO located in the country's Rivers
State contacted Biopact for consultancy and cooperation on a project
involvig the exploitation of Nipa fruticans, a potential biofuel crop.
This ongoing project looks at ways to tap the abdundant mangrove palm
in order to develop a local ethanol industry around it. Such an
industry would bring much needed jobs to this most volatile of regions.Cooperation on the Biofuels Atlas January 2006 - ongoing A Brussels-based bioenergy consulting firm is producing a data-driven global biofuels atlas that allows researchers to estimate a whole range of production factors (crop yield, energy yield, GHG emissions, labor costs and productiviy, transport infrastructure and costs, etc...) of producing biofuels in different countries. Biopact offered basic consulting work on the situation in the tropics and on data-gathering techniques for this region. Research on the efficiency of different biofuel production paths based on tropical energy crops May - July 2006 A Belgian renewable energy group asked Biopact to research the energy balance and GHG balance of different biofuel production pathways based on using tropical energy crops as feedstocks. Consulting on the environmental sustainability of large-scale bioenergy production in the Congo basin August 2006 A major international NGO writing a report on the potential threats brought about by large-scale bioenergy production to the Congo-basin's ecosystem, called on Biopact for basic consulting. The report consists of scenario's for the medium to longterm future and looks at the positive and negative role biofuels would play in this region. The Jatropha Energy System - research on small-scale use of jatropha biofuel August - September 2005
Biopact cooperated with a Tanzanian NGO on an energy project in the
small town of Haubi. The town's clinic was interested in using jatropha
curcas as a feedstock for vegetable oil to be used in diesel
generators. Biopact studied the feasibility of such a venture, mainly
because it offered an interesting case-study for small-scale bioenergy
production and use in a decentralised setting in the developing world.
Research results were presented at the 14th European Biomass Conference [paper *.pdf].Data gathering and modeling for a bioenergy consulting firm November 2005 - March 2006 Biopact cooperated with an Italian renewable energy consulting firm on a protocol for the use of agronomic, economic and sociological data in a model for the analysis of the potential for biofuel production in tropical and subtropical countries. 2006, Biopact,
