We were invited by local leaders to the unincorporated U.S. territory — halfway between Hawai‘i and Australia — to listen, to learn, and to help elevate what people in American Samoa have been saying for years. Communities there are deeply concerned about deep-sea mining, and they want to be heard before decisions are made about the ocean that sustains them. Hours later, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) stood before local officials in a meeting space up the street, walking them through the steps of a federal leasing process that was already moving forward, fast. BOEM’s visit, even as the governor’s office convened space for community voices, felt less like consultation and more like choreography. The agency’s message was, in essence, we hear you, but we are moving forward. They live in the ocean&#8217;s &#8220;twilight zone,&#8221; a dim underwater world between 55 and 100 meters (180 and 330 feet) deep, where light fades and strange life thrives. Hidden in the depths off the coast of the Pacific island of Guam, these animals make their homes on unusual structures that scientists had quietly placed on the seafloor years earlier. In November, Luiz Rocha and his team at the California Academy of Sciences finally returned to collect what those structures had been gathering for eight years: a treasure trove of life never before seen by humans. Although the standing Green New Deal offers a substantial plan to mitigate the effect of climate crisis, we must push beyond for additional gender-responsive, feminist solutions to address specific ways women and gender non-conforming folks are harmed by the crisis. If the Biden and Harris administration is truly committed to taking bold actions, they must prioritize women’s leadership and adopt a feminist climate justice agenda that offers transformative, expansive, and holistic solutions. To make sure feminist voices are at the forefront, philanthropy must commit to amplifying intersectional feminist movements and resource those that are underrepresented. Today, the Green New Deal offers the most inclusive lens of how the climate crisis widens existing gender inequity in the US. It is no accident that a woman of color, congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez of New York, is championing this cause. Her activism and her unique understanding of systemic failures to address unequal distribution of climate-caused harm laid the foundation for the Green New Deal. 							<![CDATA[Ritidian, a cliff-top refuge on the island of Guam, is one of the last places in the Pacific where you can find the mossy pillars and plunging crevices of a limestone forest. It is one of the only places you can still hear the wingbeats of an endangered Mariana fruit bat and the very last place on the island to brush against the feathery leaves of Guam’s single mature hayun lågu tree. But Ritidian is also the site of a proposed U.S. Marines firing range, part of an $87 billion construction project known as the Guam Build-Up. Over the next five years, 5,000 Marines and their families are scheduled to relocate from Okinawa, Japan, to the new base, which will include housing and firing ranges. The project is slated to bulldoze 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of limestone forest, which the military reports as 8 percent of the remaining limestone forest left on Guam. Alternative sites ignored Sienna Hiebert, a Navy-contracted botanist on Guam, says the ecological impact of the construction will be far greater than the 8 percent of forest directly lost. The condemned forest comprises two large, continuous parcels of “pristine” limestone forest, according to Hiebert, while the remaining forest elsewhere is “so patchy.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) concurs. However, scientists have now proven that other snakes are armed with the same poison. In a recent study in the Journal of Molecular Evolution, biologists compared the venom of brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis) to that of five other types of cat-eye snakes. The team extracted the molecular blueprint of each venom and analyzed the genetic components. The entire cat-eye snake family shares a particularly potent toxin called irditoxin, the researchers found. Photo courtesy of Zleng, Flickr. “This toxin that was thought to be unique to the brown tree snake is actually much more widely made,” said Bryan Fry, a toxicologist at the University of Queensland in Australia and the study’s senior author. “From there, that allowed us to infer that this is what allowed the cat-eye snakes to be such an explosive group.” The cat-eye snake evolved in Africa and underwent a rapid explosion in diversity. Several species now flourish across Southeast Asia, India and Australia, including the dog-toothed cat snake, the gold-ringed cat snake, the black mangrove snake, the black-headed cat snake and the common cat snake. New research in the open-access journal PLOS ONE has found that in the wet season, Guam&#8217;s arachnid population booms to around 40 times higher than adjacent islands. Scientists say this is because Guam, a U.S. territory in the Pacific, has lost its insect-eating forest birds. Guam&#8217;s forests were once rich in birdlife until the invasion of non-native brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis) in the 1940s decimated biodiverse bird communities. Now, the island is not only overrun with snakes, but spiders too. &#8220;You can&#8217;t walk through the jungles on Guam without a stick in your hand to knock down the spiderwebs,&#8221; says lead author Haldre Rogers, a Huxley Fellow in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Rice University. Rogers and her team counted spider webs in order to estimate spider abundance on the island. In the wet season, the team averaged 18.37 spider webs every 10 meters (around 33 feet), and in the dry season spiders were even more abundant: 26.19 webs for every 10 meters. Since there was no historical data of spider abundance prior to the loss of bird communities, the researchers compared Guam&#8217;s spider abundance to similar nearby islands with intact bird communities: Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Many of these marvelous, stunning, and rare species have received little attention from the media, conservation groups, and the public. This series is an attempt to give these &#8216;forgotten species&#8216; some well-deserved attention. I have a declarative statement to make: cycads are mind-blowing. You may ask, what is a cycad? And your questions wouldn&#8217;t be a silly one. I doubt Animal Planet will ever replace its Shark Week with Cycad Week (perhaps the fact that it&#8217;s &#8216;animal&#8217; planet and not &#8216;plant&#8217; planet gave that away); nor do I expect school children to run to see a cycad first thing when they arrive at the zoo, rushing past the polar bear and the chimpanzee; nor do I await a new children&#8217;s book about a lonely little anthropomorphized cycad just looking for a friend. In the world of species-popularity, the cycad ranks pretty low. For one thing, it&#8217;s a plant. For another thing, it doesn&#8217;t produce lovely flowers.
