							<![CDATA[Federal prosecutors in Amazonas state are suing the Brazilian government’s mining agency (ANM) for an alleged failure to monitor gold mining exploration in the Amazon. The lawsuit was filed in early July. A few days later, on July 21, the federal justice ordered ANM to increase oversight over wildcat mine permissions, small-scale mines known as garimpos in Brazil, following a similar lawsuit filed in 2021 by federal prosecutors in neighboring Pará state. The legal push also follows corruption probes into the agency&#8217;s top executives, who are accused of favoring mining companies in Brazil&#8217;s largest industrial mining state, Minas Gerais. ANM is responsible for authorizing and monitoring mining activities in Brazil, including wildcat mining permissions (PLGs), which aren&#8217;t subject to the same rigorous environmental requirements as large-scale mines. According to the federal prosecutors, poor monitoring and unclear rules have turned PLGs into mechanisms to launder gold taken from Indigenous lands and strictly protected conservation areas, where the activity is forbidden. The case is based on irregularities found in reports from Greenpeace and the Federal Court of Auditors. &#8220;Mining permits no longer serve the interests of small-scale miners and, in many cases, have become a front for gold laundering carried out by criminal organizations,” the federal prosecutor André Porreca stated on the Amazonas Federal Public Ministry&#8217;s website. All this is made more difficult when your equipment is not waterproof. So in February 2024, when a thunderstorm broke over Chapada dos Veadeiros, a national park in the northeast of Goiás state, ecologist Larissa Verona and her team sprinted for their truck. “The rain passed in about 10 minutes, but when we returned, we saw a fire had started right in the middle of the road,” presumably from a lightning strike, she tells Mongabay in a video call. “Oh my god, we need to go,” she recalls thinking. “We don’t want to be here when the fire chief arrives.” Wildfires have become increasingly more common in the Cerrado, Brazil’s second-biggest biome (after the Amazon), which sprawls across 2 million square kilometers (about 770,000 square miles) and hosts a mix of savannas, grasslands and forested corridors. In the past half-century, some 55% of the Cerrado’s native vegetation has been cleared — largely to support the expansion of industrial monocultures and often with the justification that this biome holds less environmental value than the Amazon Rainforest to the west or the Atlantic Forest to the southeast. This has resulted in degraded soils and dwindling groundwater. It is not merely a country at risk from a changing climate. 							<![CDATA[The Brazilian Cerrado, recognized as one of the world’s most species-diverse and threatened ecodomains on the planet, faces increasing pressure from large-scale agriculture and land conversion. “Ecodomains” are large areas where the predominant native vegetation is of a given general type, such as the Cerrado. These areas, officially termed “biomes” in Brazil since 2004 (a use of this term different from that in the ecological sciences), include both enclaves of native vegetation other than the predominant one and large areas that have been converted to agriculture and other uses. Although the Cerrado ecodomain sustains many of Brazil’s main river basins and occupies 24% of the national territory, our group’s review article in Nature Conservation shows that more than 55% of its native vegetation has already been lost, mostly over the last five decades. Often overshadowed by the Amazon in international debates, the Cerrado has lost more than 1 million square kilometers (more than 386,000 square miles) of its original vegetation, an area larger than France and Germany combined. Even when there are small fluctuations in annual rates of clearing, the historical trend continues to be one of increasing conversion driven by agricultural expansion, urban growth, mining and land speculation. The result is an increasingly fragmented and ecologically fragile landscape. At the time, the EU was debating the EUDR, its regulation on deforestation-free products. Producer countries like Brazil were pushing back, worried about the cost and feasibility of complying with the regulations, said Raoni Rajão, an associate professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil and lead author of the paper. The study, which analyzed land use across 815,000 rural properties in the Amazon and Cerrado, showed that “technology and data do exist to implement government systems for universal traceability,” Rajão told Mongabay. This prompted him and other UFMG researchers to develop an online platform that uses official records to cross-check data on land use, deforestation, cattle transport, and compliance with environmental laws of rural properties, making the information public and free. Called Selo Verde (“Green Label” in English), the platform was first trialed in 2021 for soy and beef in the Amazonian state of Pará. Three other Brazilian states have since adopted their own version of it, offering a model for guaranteeing that commodities destined for the EU — such as soy, beef, coffee and cacao — are compliant with the EUDR. Agricultural expansion drives nearly 90% of global deforestation, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).  The sector therefore represents a critical climate challenge: forest loss and degradation account for about 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, by estimates from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. One primary strategy to slow deforestation over the past two decades involves food and agri-commodity companies pledging “zero deforestation supply chains”, under pressure from consumers and environmental groups. These commitments have helped reduce deforestation from land uses like soybean production in the Brazilian Amazon through initiatives such as the now-suspended “Brazilian Soy Moratorium”. Tropical deforestation globally has remained persistently high, however. We argue here that the long-term impact of “zero deforestation supply chains” will be limited by the costs of implementing and operating these pledges; companies striving to do their part to reduce deforestation are less price-competitive than those that do not. Adjustments are urgently needed to translate corporate engagement into more collaborative and effective approaches to deforestation. With the goal of mitigating deforestation, the European Union has adopted a “zero deforestation supply chain” approach as the basis of its Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). When and if it is eventually implemented, the EUDR is set to exclude from the EU market those agri-commodities produced on land deforested after 2020. He says he saw, startled, its glistening, pitch-black pelt and recognized it as one of the rarest animals of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest: a black jaguar (Panthera onca). For Titiah, one of the 21 caciques (chiefs) of the Caramuru-Paraguassu territory in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia, the fleeting sighting of the big cat was a spiritual encounter and a sign of changes afoot in Indigenous lands. “There was a time when we started the reclamation process, when we [re]occupied our territories, and found a large part of our land transformed into cattle pasture,” Titiah tells Mongabay at his house in the municipality of Pau Brasil, adjacent to the Caramuru-Paraguassu territory, where he’s a city councilor. “Then our people left a good part of these areas to regenerate. 							<![CDATA[&nbsp; Brazil is the world’s most biodiverse country, and the title is not closely contested in absolute numbers: between 10% and 15% of all known species live within its borders. The country contains nearly two-thirds of the Amazon rainforest and supplies about a tenth of the world’s food. That combination of ecological wealth and economic weight gives Brazil an outsize role in the global effort to slow nature loss. Yet Brazil was also among the roughly 85% of countries that missed the 2024 deadline to submit a new National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to the United Nations under the Convention on Biological Diversity. When delegates gathered for the COP16 summit in Cali, Colombia, in October 2024, Brazil’s plan was still unfinished. &nbsp; On December 29th 2025, it finally arrived. The new NBSAP covers the period from 2025 to 2030 and is the product of a long consultation involving hundreds of scientists, Indigenous representatives, civil-society groups and government officials. It is ambitious, detailed and aligned with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Whether it is durable is another matter. Conserving 80% of the Amazon One of the plan’s headline commitments is to “conserve” 80% of the Brazilian Amazon by 2030. The wording matters. Conservation here includes protected areas, Indigenous territories and other forms of managed land where large-scale conversion is prohibited. There is some recent momentum to build on. This year, researchers described a tiny new marsupial, a new Himalayan bat, an ancient tree, a bright blue butterfly, a parrot snake, and a fairy lantern plant, among others. &#8220;I think most people believe that we know most species on Earth,&#8221; Mario Moura, a professor at the Federal University of Paraíba in Brazil, told Mongabay, &#8220;but in the best-case scenario, we know 20% of Earth&#8217;s species.&#8221; Some estimate that only 10% of all the species on the planet have been described. Unfortunately, many species may be threatened with extinction before they’re even formally named — victims of human activities like development and climate change. 							<![CDATA[From the Amazon Rainforest to the Cerrado savanna, enterprises led by Indigenous and traditional communities play a vital role in protecting forests and restoring degraded Brazilian landscapes. At the same time, they provide an important source of income for marginalized groups, strengthening Brazil’s bioeconomy environment. Sustainable forest-based businesses include the harvesting of açaí berries (Euterpe oleracea) and Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa), and the production of andiroba oil (Carapa guianensis). They also cover agroecological and agroforestry farming, community-based ecotourism, restoration and reforestation services, and the production of cultural goods such as artisanal crafts. Some of these projects even create community-level financial mechanisms, like cooperative banks. Yet many setbacks prevent them from scaling up. 							<![CDATA[As the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) approaches its implementation, companies involved in supply chains for soy and other commodities reaching the EU market will soon have to prove that their products do not come from areas deforested after 2020 and that their operations comply with local environmental and human rights laws. This will be particularly challenging for the soy sector, as soybean production has long been a major driver of deforestation, especially in South America. Initially scheduled to take effect in December 2024, the EUDR was postponed for a year, with the European Commission recently proposing an additional grace period to give companies more time to prepare. To find out how ready the soy sector is, Mongabay reached out to five of the world’s largest traders: ADM, AMAGGI, Bunge, Cargill and COFCO International. Responses ranged from “no comment” to no reply. Despite the silence, experts from trade associations and NGOs say big soy traders are already operationally prepared to meet EUDR requirements. “The information we have, which they [traders and soy sector associations] usually share with us, is that they are 100% prepared,” Tiago Reis, conservation specialist at WWF-Brazil, told Mongabay in a voice message. “Some even questioned the proposal to extend the [EUDR] deadline, because they had already invested … so they would be ready to comply.” Patchwork of legal forest reserves, pasture and soy farms in the Brazilian Amazon. 							<![CDATA[A Chilean company with a history of pollution has begun building a new pulp and paper mill in Brazil, threatening to turn a highly biodiverse region into a “green desert” of eucalyptus monoculture, experts warn. Arauco announced in April this year that it would begin work on the Projeto Sucuriú site in Inocência municipality, in Mato Grosso do Sul state. The project is expected to cover 3,500 hectares (about 8,650 acres) near where the MS-377 highway crosses the Sucuriú River. The company is investing $4.6 billion in the project, or nearly a fifth of Mato Grosso do Sul’s 2021 GDP, according to Brazilian government data. In August, the company signed a contract for financing amounting to $250 million from the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and another $600 million from the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC). The Mato Grosso do Sul state environment agency, IMASUL, issued the company its installation license in May 2024, at an event attended by the state’s governor, Eduardo Riedel; Inocência Mayor Antônio Ângelo; and Arauco’s Brazilian CEO, Carlos Altimiras. Riedel said at the event that Arauco is one of the world’s cleanest pulp and paper companies, and touted its commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality. In Brazil, however, the pulp and paper industry is classified as being potentially highly polluting under the as stated in 2000 National Environmental Policy Law. 							<![CDATA[When they closed their eyes, the Bakairi people of the Santana Indigenous Territory in Brazil heard a sound similar to rain in the forest. It was reminiscent of a summer storm, the kind that arrives suddenly and drenches the vast Cerrado savanna. But instead of water, it was fire. The flames spread across the 73,000-hectare Indigenous territory in the municipality of Nobres, Mato Grosso state, burning trees, animals, medicinal plants, and everything else in their way. “A machine caught fire in the farm near the territory. The owners couldn’t control it, so it spread to our area,” says Edna Rodrigues Bakairi, a 39-year-old educator. As the fire advanced, the community waited for the authorities — municipal, state or federal — to authorize fire brigades to start containing the flames. “During that wait, the fire arrived and destroyed everything here,” Edna says. The incident, in 2018, left deep scars and forced the Bakairi to seek their own response. A community brigade was born from those ashes, and over the next six years it has prevented large-scale fires on the land. The difference from other Indigenous-led fire brigades? The prominence of women: of the 45 volunteers trained by a retired firefighter, 25 are women. Tragedy amid a national crisis It was Paulo Selva, a retired colonel from the Mato Grosso state fire department, who came up with a project to strengthen socioenvironmental resilience in the Bakairi community. In September 2024, investigative nonprofit Earthsight published its “Secret Ingredient” report, which established links between chicken sold by McDonald’s and at supermarkets in Europe, and soy produced on deforested land in the Cerrado. In a recent update to the report, Earthsight found that two of the three producers identified in “Secret Ingredient” continued to clear land for soy in the year since. This makes their product noncompliant with the EUDR, which, at the time of Earthsight’s research, was due to come into force on Dec. 30 this year. The European Commission has since proposed delaying the application of the law for another year. “The threat that soy production and agricultural expansion pose to the Cerrado … is still ongoing,” said Lara Shirra White, Latin America researcher at Earthsight and lead author of “Secret Ingredient: A year of inaction,” the update to the 2024 investigation. “And so the chance of soy and other commodities that are linked to the conversion and deforestation of the Cerrado entering international supply chains … is still a very real threat,” she told Mongabay. Experts Mongabay spoke to agree the EUDR promises to become a landmark legislative tool for curbing commodities supply chain-related deforestation at the international level. But those analysts also warn of “unintended consequences” built into the law that could imperil the initiative’s objectives and effectiveness and in some cases raise the risk of further deforestation or land use change spreading to other ecosystems. Once it is implemented, the EUDR requires producers of a wide range of commodities — including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and wood — prove their products are not being sourced from land deforested after Dec. 31, 2020. EUDR implementation was delayed in 2024 when transnational companies and commodity producing nations complained to the EU of being unprepared for the law. That hiatus raised widespread concerns the delay might be used for “watering down” the statute. But the postponement could also allow time for potential EUDR defects to be addressed. The Rainforest Alliance, for example, which has supported the law from its inception, “definitely saw the unintended consequences from the start,” says Fanny Gauttier, the NGO’s European public affairs lead. Prime among those unintended consequences, she says, is the possibility of the EUDR accidentally excluding many of the world’s smallholder farmers. 							<![CDATA[Having receded by 350 million hectares (almost 865 million acres) since 1850, trends in Latin American forests are now inflecting away from further losses of tree-covered habitats and toward their recovery. As we explain in our book Reversing Deforestation, published by Stanford University Press in December 2024, this change stems from reduced population growth and the continuing improvement of agricultural yields. But as we also point out, the transition from deforestation to reforestation will hinge during the years to come on local resource ownership, not least because this ownership is an unavoidable prerequisite for the financing of carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services provided by forests. Mainly because it causes the demand for food to go up, demographic expansion adds to the displacement of natural habitats by farms and ranches. Forest loss in Latin America during the last 175 years, when human numbers in the region rose from 30 million to 650 million or more, is a clear example. However, human fertility has plunged in the region, from 5.9 births per woman in 1960 to 1.9 births per woman today, so annual natural increase (equal to the birth rate minus the death rate) has declined from nearly 3% to less than 1%. Human fertility has fallen more in Latin America than in sub-Saharan Africa, where women still bear more than four children, on average, and natural increase remains above 2% a year. 							<![CDATA[The Tocantins-Araguaia waterway is one of the Brazilian government’s priority projects for transporting soy, corn, meat, minerals and other commodities to ports in the Amazon Rainforest. The project calls for more than 2,000 kilometers (more than 1,200 miles) of navigable channels in these two rivers, which cross the Amazon and the Cerrado savanna biomes, and is part of the so-called Arco Norte project, a set of infrastructure plans to improve logistical efficiency in northern Brazil to trim shipping costs. Making these water channels viable requires a series of structural interventions: dredging, rock removal, construction of dams and locks, and port expansion. Public prosecutors and environmental organizations have spoken out against these initiatives, saying they threaten ecosystems and hundreds of traditional communities in six Brazilian states. One of these battles centers on the plan to blow up a natural rock formation called Pedral do Lourenço in Pará state. Spread across 43 km (27 mi) of the Tocantins River, this rock formation is an obstacle to ship navigation during the dry season, from June to December, blocking the passage of boats coming from the Tocantins and Araguaia rivers, which converge just before the formation. The blasts would affect 35 km (21.7 mi) of it. The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) plans to create a navigable channel about 100 meters wide in this stretch by blasting rocks, supplemented by dredging before and after the area. Mining, combined with worsening climate conditions, exposes communities to more extreme weather events, such as drought and floods, and escalates socioenvironmental risks, the authors say. The report focuses on mining for minerals used in the global energy transition, such as lithium, nickel, graphite and niobium. Brazil, which mines about 1.7 billion tons of transition minerals annually, plays a significant role in this shift. The country is the second-largest producer of iron ore and it produces more than 90% of the world’s niobium supply. The second-largest reserves of graphite and rare earth elements are found in Brazil, as well as the third-largest reserves of nickel. In January, Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and government funding agency Finep announced an $815 million investment package to accelerate the development of strategic mineral projects across the country. &#8220;The call is an important step forward in the mineral sector for achieving the Brazilian government&#8217;s goals of expanding the industry&#8217;s production capacity in the context of sustainable and technological development of the new industrial policy and the ecological transformation plan,&#8221; BNDES president Aloizio Mercadante said in a press statement at the time. Between 2022 and 2023, as much of the world was locked down by the COVID-19 pandemic, Corumbá embarked on an epic journey through the state, beginning in Atlantic Forest State Park, or PEMA, to Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, or PESCAN. In between, he crossed different fragments of vegetation. He stayed at PESCAN for a period before moving on. Corumbá walked more than 120 kilometers (75 miles) during the 11 months that he was monitored by a GPS radio-transmitter collar. His movements were logged until July 2023, when the transmitter’s battery died and the collar released itself from around Corumbá’s neck. “[The cat] moved beautifully in the landscape, and we identified the fragments that he traveled through between the two parks,” says biologist Fernanda Cavalcanti de Azevedo, executive coordinator of the Mammals of the Cerrado Conservation Program (PCMC), which is connected to the Federal University of Catalão (UFCAT) in Goiás. “This enabled us to attribute a level of priority for the conservation of these specific regions because the puma acted as our ‘tool,’ showing us which areas they are.” PCMC has been carrying out studies and extension programs in central Brazil since 2009 to learn how wildlife native to Brazil’s Cerrado savanna, mostly the carnivores, interact in landscapes modified by human activities. 							<![CDATA[CORUMBAÍBA, Brazil — They appeared at dusk. The day was ending in a pink-and-yellow sky when a cub moved in the grass. Its mother appeared next, red as the earth, small, slender. Krahô-Kanela is an experienced mom, having had at least four litters in her estimated six years of life. Having had numerous partners, she’s now with MacDonald, her fifth mate and stepfather to her three new pups. The cycle of life has taken away her partners and also the tip of her tail, but she’s resilient in her journey through the cattle ranches in the municipality of Corumbaíba, in Brazil’s Goiás state. The hoary fox or hoary zorro (Lycalopex vetulus) is a small but superlative animal: the smallest canid species in Brazil, the only one endemic not only to the Cerrado but also to the country as a whole, and the only one that feeds mainly on termites. That last bit is why it inhabits the biome’s clean, open fields, where vegetation is lower and termite mounds are more visible. It usually lives in burrows dug by six-banded armadillos (Euphractus sexcinctus). The litter is born in September, and mother and father share the tasks of raising the babies, searching for food and guarding the den to keep predators away. 							<![CDATA[SERRO, Minas Gerais — Nature has always been intrinsic to life in Queimadas, a quilombo community located in an environmental buffer zone where the Cerrado and the Atlantic forest meet. But when Brazilian mining company Herculano Mineração announced its plans to extract iron ore nearby, the community felt their ecological way of life was at risk. “They said they would go ahead whether we liked it or not,” says Valderes Quintino, 25, the community leader, about the company that first approached him in 2018. Since then, people in Queimadas have denounced mining companies applying for licenses for violations and irregularities against the community; they fear that if candidate mining projects ever get the green light, a mining race would start in Serro, while permanently damaging the region&#8217;s ecosystems and local livelihoods. Alongside other quilombo communities, Queimadas created a resistance front against the advance of mining, while advocating for their land and its environmental conservation. Part of a region considered the “water tank of Brazil,” where the Jequitinhonha, the Doce, and the São Francisco rivers meet, the municipality of Serro is part of the Pico do Itambé State Park, the Águas Vertentes Conservation Unit and the Serra do Espinhaço UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Its historical center sits about 5 kilometers from the potential mining site of Herculano Mineração. 							<![CDATA[Since 2010, loosened state legislation has contributed to the spread of authorized deforestation in western Bahia, where municipalities like São Desidério stand out among Brazil’s most aggressive deforesters. The scenario is described in the book entitled Desmatamento e apropriação da água no Oeste da Bahia: uma política de Estado [Deforestation and Water Appropriation in Western Bahia: a State Policy]. The publication explains how between September, 2007 and June, 2021, INEMA (the Institute of the Environment and Water Resources) emitted Vegetation Removal Authorizations (ASV) excusing environmental licensing requirements for agrosilvopastoral activities and allowing for the deforestation of 992,587 hectares of land—an area 32 times the city of Salvador. Analyses of 5,126 ASV permits and 835 Water Resource Use Permits showed that 80% of the areas approved for deforestation lie in Bahia’s Cerrado region. Water permits emitted between September, 2007 and September, 2022 allow for the daily capture of 17 billion liters of water from the Grande, Corrente and Carinhanha River basins. This volume would be enough water to supply seven times the Bahia state population and nine times São Paulo city’s population every day. The ten municipalities where the most vegetation was removed under ASV permissions are Formosa do Rio Preto, São Desidério, Jaborandi, Correntina, Cocos, Barreiras, Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Riachão das Neves, Baianópolis and Santa Rita de Cássia. The Bahian Cerrado is part of the Matopiba region, composed of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, where Brazil’s advancing agricultural frontier has been accelerating the deforestation process. To avoid greater pressure on these lands and the communities that inhabit them, Indigenous leaders and NGOs are calling on EU authorities to review and expand the regulation at its one-year review period. The EUDR, set to prevent products linked to deforestation from entering the EU starting Jan. 1, 2024, applies to any geographic area where palm oil, cattle, coffee, cocoa, soy, wood and rubber are produced. However, for it to be considered deforested land, it has to fall under the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) definition of “forest,” which excludes certain savannas and grasslands. Unless illegalities are found according to national and international laws (including conservation laws), commodities produced in areas not covered by the EUDR will be able to enter the EU. This includes most of the Cerrado, an ecosystem that is known as the “cradle of waters” because of its vital role in replenishing the main Brazilian and South American watersheds, as well as providing energy and food security for millions of people. It is Brazil’s second-largest biome, covering more than 20% of the country’s territory — an area the size of Mexico — and is the world’s most biodiverse savanna. 							<![CDATA[A recent investigation has uncovered new significant links between Brazil’s top meatpackers — JBS, Marfrig and Minerva — and widespread environmental destruction in the Pantanal wetlands, the Amazon Rainforest, and the Cerrado savanna. The investigation, part of Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response deforestation monitoring program in partnership with Brazilian news outlet Repórter Brasil and sustainability NGO AidEnvironment, revealed that from October 2023 to February 2024, a total of 4,651 hectares (11,493 acres) were deforested and converted on five cattle farms in the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal biomes. These ranches reportedly supply Brazil&#8217;s largest meatpackers, which, in turn, provide beef products to major retailers such as Carrefour, Casino/GPA, Grupo Mateus and Sendas/Assaí. Notably, 86% of this destruction took place in the Pantanal. At the heart of these findings is Fazenda Soberana, a ranch in the state of Mato Grosso owned by Claudecy Oliveira Lemes. It accounts for 74% of the total deforestation recorded on the five ranches. Lemes is currently under investigation for using the herbicide 2,4-D, a key ingredient in Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War, to destroy 81,200 hectares (200,650 acres) of native vegetation in the Pantanal — an area four times the size of Amsterdam. “[The herbicide] is spread by planes, so it has a great power of spreading all over the area,” Mariana Gameiro, senior adviser at Mighty Earth and co-author of the report, told Mongabay. “It’s highly toxic. Márcia lives in PDS Terra Nossa, a land reform settlement in the southwest of Pará state, in the Brazilian Amazon, where land-grabbers are burning vegetation for the fourth year in a row. Designed as a sustainable settlement where dwellers once could live from small plots of farmlands collecting fruits and nuts, PDS Terra Nossa is now mostly covered by pasture and soy. &#8220;They&#8217;ve burned everyone&#8217;s crops. How are we going to live? How are we going to sell our food?&#8221; said Márcia, the most outspoken PDS activist. She survived three death attempts and is now part of Pará’s state human rights defenders protection program. On Aug. 22, the Federal Public Ministry in Pará urged federal and public bodies to take urgent measures to fight the fires in PDS Terra Nossa and the Munduruku Indigenous Territory, also in Pará&#8217;s southwest. The federal land reform agency, INCRA, which oversees the settlement management, sent Mongabay an email stating that the process of removing land-grabbers from the area is in the administrative stage. INPE’s deforestation alert system detected 666 square kilometers of forest destruction in July 2024, a 33% rise compared to a year earlier. Despite this uptick, deforestation remains 46% lower this year compared to last year on a 12-month rolling basis and is near a six-year low. However, the region is grappling with a severe drought that has affected large areas of the Amazon rainforest. The dry conditions have led to a sharp increase in wildfires, particularly in the Brazilian state of Roraima. Burn scars detected by INPE are currently at their highest level since August 2018. Taking advantage of a conservative majority in Congress, it has approved long-dreamed legislation slashing environmental regulations in favor of cattle ranching and farming, despite Lula’s green promises. One of them took effect in late 2023: The so-called Poison Bill, which opened new doors for the approval, retail and use of pesticides by the world’s largest buyer of pesticides — including several substances banned in the European Union. In discussion since 1991, the Brazilian Congress approved the bill in November 2023. The robust economy on the west side of the highway is evidenced by block after block of luxury-brand retail shops, streets filled with pickup trucks costing hundreds of thousands of reais and ever-increasing numbers of luxury homes and gated communities. Meanwhile, on the east side, cars made decades ago circulate on roads first paved fewer than five years ago in a landscape composed of simple, unfinished brick houses. Billboards for buses that carry anonymous workers to and from the northern state of Maranhão also dot the landscape. Many here have even given up their lives to the production chain of Cerrado gold, also known as soybean. The generation of wealth and propagation of inequality in Brazil’s central-west are two faces of the one single development project put into practice in the 1970s. Based on the logic that Amazonia and the Cerrado needed to be occupied by colonialists from southern Brazil, the project went into overdrive with the globalization of food commodities, consolidating Brazil as the world’s breadbasket. When she was younger, Silva tried to keep a job in the municipality of Cáceres, in Mato Grosso state, but the river always called her back. She decided to return to the banks of the Paraguay River to live among fish, tuiuiú birds (Jabiru mycteria), alligators and jaguars. Silva has been fishing for 15 years and is worried about the approval of a new bill that banned commercial fishing in Mato Grosso on Jan. 1 for five years. Authored by the state’s governor, Mauro Mendes, the law, known in Brazil as Cota Zero (Zero Quota), was approved under an environmentalist rhetoric of protecting fishing stocks. “A true professional fisherman respects the law and the quantity of fish he can take from the river,” Silva told Mongabay. “We respect the environment in which we live. The bait we catch if it is too small, we select and take it back to the place where we fished the bait. That&#8217;s respect.” The law exempts subsistence fishing by Quilombola, Indigenous and other Native peoples from restrictions and catching fish on river banks for local consumption. However, the transport, storage and sale of fish are prohibited. 							<![CDATA[In December 2021, six major European supermarket chains decided to halt the sale of Brazilian beef giant JBS products indefinitely. The boycott was announced after a report by the nonprofit media outlet Repórter Brasil, in partnership with the global NGO Mighty Earth, which directly linked JBS goods sold in Europe to deforestation in Brazil’s most threatened ecosystems, including the Amazon Rainforest. The journalistic investigation revealed that the meatpacking company had bought cattle raised in illegally deforested areas by indirect suppliers in a scheme known as “cattle laundering.” On April 29, Marcel Gomes, the executive secretary at Repórter Brasil, won the 2024 Goldman Environmental Prize for leading this investigative effort. “It’s a pleasure to receive the award for a journalistic effort and to see this field of knowledge valued,” Gomes told Mongabay by phone. “This investigative work required a lot of planning and dedication, years of defining strategies and implementation.” Other five Goldman awards were announced on Apr. 29: Alok Shukla from India, Andrea Vidaurre from the U.S., Murrawah Maroochy Johnson from Australia, Teresa Vicente from Spain, and Nonhle Mbuthuma and Sinegugu Zukulu from South Africa. 							<![CDATA[It was in 2015 when researchers were attempting to capture tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) in the Brazilian Cerrado to install monitoring collars so they could study the species. While trying to complete the anesthetic procedure, they noticed that the anesthesia was not working, and as a result, they had to supplement the doses for the procedure to take effect. This was the catalyst for research that revealed years later that tapirs in the region were contaminated with various types of pesticides and had alterations in organs important for metabolism. At the time, researchers hypothesized that something in the tapirs’ bodies was interfering with the anesthesia. One possibility was pesticide exposure, which is linked to changes in the metabolic process. Now, another hypothesis raised by the researchers back then has recently been confirmed: Residents of the same region also show contamination by pesticides. The tapir findings prompted researchers to collect biological samples from roughly 100 nearby residents, and more than 30 people tested positive for some form of pesticide, with more than one chemical present in some cases. The most widely used pesticide in Brazil, glyphosate, was found in more than 20 people. The work, released in a technical report in February, was conducted by researchers from the National Initiative for the Brazilian Tapir Conservation (INCAB) of the Institute of Ecological Research (IPÊ), who are preparing a paper on the research for publication in a scientific journal. The IFACC, or Financial Innovation for Amazonia, the Cerrado and Chaco, is led by the Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). There are 16 signing entities, including Spanish lender Banco Santander and Swiss-based agrochemical producer Syngenta. “We see an important role not only from the financial sector, which is placing money on the table, but also from companies that depend on soybean and cattle farming in Brazil who are helping [the initiative],” said Danielle Carreira, director of financial sector engagement at the TFA. She said the initiative’s main objective is to place farmers on the sustainability agenda while still allowing them to increase their operations. “We want to give farmers a voice in this conversation.” Of the 11 projects funded by the initiative, seven are in the Cerrado, Brazil’s megadiverse savanna biome, and received 98% of the funding allocated to date, or $234.5 million. The money is being applied to projects that recover degraded pastureland to preserve native vegetation and increase productivity in areas that have already been deforested. The Cerrado isn’t just the planet’s largest and most biodiverse tropical savanna — it’s also where 60% of Brazil’s agricultural production takes place.
