							<![CDATA[In the 1990s, a single moratorium announcement wiped out an entire industry, leaving 37,000 people unemployed overnight. The ecological collapse of the Canadian Grand Banks Cod Fisheries is the most famous historical example of a collapse in fish stocks due to overfishing. Not only were cod stocks severely depleted, it was the largest layoff of workers in one day, and the biggest ever industrial layoff in Canada&#8217;s history: fishing fleets, processing plants, associated support businesses were all impacted when the moratorium was declared. It devastated coastal communities in Newfoundland and Labrador and led to significant migration, changing some of those communities forever. Five years ago this month, the Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement (CAOFA) was signed by Arctic Coastal States, in an example of unprecedented international collaboration based upon the precautionary principle, which put in place a moratorium on fishing in the CAO until 2037, thereby protecting Arctic Ocean species from commercial exploitation as the sea ice retreats. In effect, this moratorium establishes a temporary marine reserve for fish populations that are increasingly moving north as waters warm. This is Arctic exceptionalism in practice, a recognition that the CAO can be, as often heralded, a common heritage of humankind, a unique global inheritance that must be protected and preserved through an Arctic Treaty System, providing in practice a North Pole Marine Reserve. Why think about this now? This year, the moratorium on cod fishing on the Grand Banks was lifted. 							<![CDATA[In her 22 years as a small-scale fisher in Rio Grande do Sul, Viviane Machado Alves has rarely seen so much fish arriving in the cove that opens a short walk from her doorstep. By heart, she lists an extraordinary amount of mullet, sole, Brazilian silversides and kingfish, but also “several species that I’d never seen or eaten,” she says. Her husband, who has worked as a fisher for 50 years, even discarded a grouper — a fish of commercial value and highly appreciated in local cuisine — because he didn’t know that animal his net caught in winter. “But when it came for the second time on the same day, I decided to take it home and show it to my uncle, who is in his 80s. He was amazed, because he was still a child when he saw a grouper for the last time,” says Paulo Matias. They are members of the oldest fishing colony (a union-like association of fishers from a given area) in Rio Grande do Sul state, known as Z1, and they set up their nets around Marinheiros Island, in the municipality of Rio Grande, in the far south of Brazil. They fish in an area of the Marinheiros Lagoon — the largest barrier-lagoon in South America — 20 kilometers (12 miles) away, in a straight line, from the channel that connects it to the Atlantic Ocean. But a recent study has found that the size of some these noteworthy fish has diminished over time, even as reporters continue to tag them with superlatives such as the “largest” and “mammoth.” “[T]he fact that the media use similar adjectives to describe fish that are increasingly small is worrisome because people’s opinions are often shaped by what they read in the media,” Isabelle Côté, the study’s senior author and a professor of marine ecology at Simon Fraser University in Canada, said in an email. Moore, an assistant professor of environmental science and policy at the University of California, Davis, and the study’s lead author, said in a statement. Continued from part III. After four days of sailing up the fast-flowing Mahakam we arrive in the village of Laham, not far from the end point of Raven’s trip. In Raven’s time there was a Catholic mission school in the town “with an attendance of about seventy Dayak boys”. The school building still stands today, as does the church which recently celebrated its centennial anniversary. Raven had several dinners with the Dutch pastor, father Goossens, who was stationed here. We ask the people whether they remember or know stories of this priest, or even Raven himself, but too much time has passed. But they do tell us that two Dutch missionaries are buried in the local cemetery. And indeed, we find their gravestones next to each other. Sister van den Heuvel, born in the Netherlands in 1877, died in Laham in 1926. Brother Lauwers, born also in the Netherlands, died before his 30th birthday in 1928. The river sides are covered in increasingly dense forests and villages are few and far between. This starts showing in the wildlife we encounter. Surveying before dusk we see a group of monkeys every few minutes, including long-tailed macaques, silvered leaf monkeys, and proboscis monkeys. They are not even that shy and most just stare at us as our boat glides past their sleeping trees and don’t bother to move. This is a good sign. In areas with high hunting pressure, species like primates tend to get very flighty. The next day starts misty. We spent the night anchored near the town of Melak. An area of long-term human use because it sits on dark and fertile volcanic soils, something Raven noticed too. People on Borneo are not randomly distributed across the map, as one might think. They worked out a long time ago which soils were best for growing crops and where the climate was ideal. Borneo has several such population concentrations, even deep in the interior, where access is much limited by the almost impassable rapids in the upper river areas. In more recent times, Borneo has increasingly started to look outward though. We sail until 10 at night and tie up the boat near the mouth of the Kedang Kepala River in the town of Muara Kaman. This town has one of the few archaeological sites on Borneo, with building remains and unearthed artefacts indicating that in the 4th century AD this was the site of Martadipura, the first Hindu Kingdom in present-day Indonesia. The strategically chosen site, of which now little more remains than a few earthen ramparts, would have controlled the vast interior trade network. From this site, products like rhino horn, camphor and bird’s nests were exported to as far as China. Muara Kaman is normally also a good site to see the highly threatened Mahakam dolphin, a river species of which only a few hundred animals survive. I saw a pod of this species years ago feeding in the confluence of the two rivers, where the black peaty waters from the north meet the brown silty waters of the Mahakam. This time we don’t get to see them, which might have been because it is dark when we arrive and I am still asleep when the boat engine starts up again just after the 4 am call for prayer from the local mosque. We drive to Samarinda, the riverside capital of East Kalimantan Province in Indonesian Borneo, on a cloudy but warm day. Our boat, which Rustam our local wildlife expert has arranged, is waiting at the pier. There are some delays. Someone has thrown a Molotov cocktail at a local church, killing one young child and wounding several others. He tries to escape but locals catch him when he tries to flee into the river, and things do not end well. Religious tensions are once again playing up in Indonesia and the town is in turmoil so we are keen to get out sooner rather than later. The boat owner, however, has different thoughts and first wants to renegotiate the price that we had agreed for his boat. We step back and let Rustam take charge. After half an hour of bargaining we are good to go. Rustam sticks to his guns and doesn’t budge on the initial price. We push off and our journey in Raven’s footsteps can begin. Henry Cushier Raven With financial support from the National Geographic Society, our team is retracing the route followed by Henry Cushier Raven just over 100 years ago. Raven worked as a specimen collector for the Smithsonian in Washington. Yet human actions in the oceans are having a major impact on species, sometimes in unexpected ways. Indeed, a recent study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B finds that bottom trawling may be making some fish skinnier. Investigating how trawling affects the prey and diet composition of two flatfish species, plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and dab (Limanda limanda), Andrew Frederick Johnson, found that bottom trawling leaves plaice with reduced biomass. In other words, the fishing technique could be responsible for skinnier plaice. Johnson, a postdoctoral researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography&#8217;s Center for Marine Biodiversity &#038; Conservation and lead author of the study, conducted his study along a gradient of commercial bottom trawling in the northeastern Irish Sea. Chronic trawling here primarily targets Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), but it is clearly impacting non-target species as well. 							<![CDATA[If you have been fortunate enough to visit the Amazon or any other great rainforest, you&#8217;ve probably been wowed by the multitude and diversity of life. However, you also likely quickly realized that the deep jungle is not quite what you may have imagined when you were a child: you don&#8217;t watch as jaguars wrestle with giant anteaters or anacondas circle prey. Instead life in the Amazon is small: insects, birds, frogs. Even biologists will tell you that you can spend years in the Amazon and never see a single jaguar. Yet rainforest guide and modern day explorer Paul Rosolie says there is another Amazon, one so pristine and with such wild abundance that it seems impossible to imagine if not for Rosolie&#8217;s stories, photos, and soon videos. This is an Amazon where the big animals—jaguars, tapir, anaconda, giant anteaters, and harpy eagles—are not only abundant but visible. Free from human impact and overhunting, these remote places—off the beaten path of tourists—are growing ever smaller and, according to Rosolie, are in danger of disappearing forever. &#8220;Truly pristine sections of forest in Amazonia are free from any sign of human activity—zero annual river traffic, no trails, trash, chemical pollution, and no machete marks or chopped trees,&#8221; Rosolie told mongabay.com in a recent interview. In such places, Rosolie has observed that usually elusive animals behave quite differently.
