For generations, pastoralists learned to read the landscape. The arrival of seasonal winds, the timing of the rains, and the alignment of stars all carried meaning. Mohamoud Sulub, a 50-year-old livestock herder, grew up relying on these signs in Guuyow village. They told him when to move his herd and when to stay. He knew his neighbors would, in hard times, understand them, too — and help when needed. That knowledge is now failing him. This year, Mohamoud says, there is simply nowhere to go. “The land is all drought,” he tells Mongabay. The father of six has spent his entire life herding animals across this arid landscape, as his father did before him. For traditional herders such as Lama, rearing yaks (Bos grunniens), valued for transport, meat and wool, is becoming challenging due to rising costs, climate change, lack of local markets for yak produce, frequent spread of diseases and other socioeconomic pressures. This has not only increased challenges for domesticated yaks, but also for their wild cousins (Bos mutus). “My family sold dozens of them in the neighboring Mustang district last fall because it was more labor-intensive and costly to rear them, and we had limited kharka (pastureland/rangeland) to graze them,” Lama said. Many young people across the Himalayan rangelands are leaving for better opportunities in big cities or abroad, creating a shortage of labor. According to the National Population and Housing Census 2021 Internal Migration in Nepal report, in the country’s mountains, in-migration increased from 9,698 (2.2%) in 1971 to 75,542 (2.4%) in 2021, but excess out-migration resulted in a negative net migration of -543,966 by 2021. According to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), climate change is affecting Himalayan high-altitude ecosystems used for grazing. But in Kenya, it’s the king of the jungle that’s now becoming fearful — of domestic livestock. In Kenya, most wildlife is found outside formally protected areas. The lions, zebras and elephants that attract tourists mostly live in pastoralist rangeland. For farmers and herders, this can be both a curse — coexistence is hard work where predators sometimes attack livestock and cattle compete with wild herbivores for grass — and a blessing — many community-owned conservancies profitably lease portions of their land to tourism operators for safaris and lodges, generating revenue for their members. In most conservancies’ grazing plans, herders can make use of the entire landscape. This allows grazing pressure to be more evenly distributed, but it also assumes that when herders and their livestock aren’t present in an area, other herbivores and the predators that hunt them make free use of the space. Niels Mogensen, a biologist with the Mara Predator Conservation Program, a Kenya Wildlife Trust initiative aimed at preserving large carnivores, says no one had actually checked to see if this was true before now. Each day, the forest&#8217;s 390 billion trees release approximately 20 billion metric tons of water vapor into the atmosphere through evapotranspiration, creating what Brazilian scientists call rios voadores — flying rivers. These aerial currents of moisture flow westward from the Atlantic, recirculating water from the forest canopy before turning south to deliver rainfall across South America&#8217;s agricultural heartlands. But the mechanism is breaking down. Since the 1970s, Brazil has cleared 88 million hectares (217 million acres) of Amazon forest, most converted into low-productivity pastures, with around 45 million hectares (111 million acres) considered severely or moderately degraded. The consequences extend beyond biodiversity loss, carbon emissions and social disruption: deforestation threatens the continent&#8217;s productive capacity and the economic livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people. Droughts in 2023 and 2024 affected more than 50 million hectares (124 million acres) of forest, and scientists warn that continued deforestation could push the system past a tipping point where the Amazon can no longer sustain its rainfall regime. Yet hidden within this environmental crisis lies an economic opportunity. Brazil&#8217;s Forest Code, revised in 2012, requires private properties in the country’s Amazonian region to maintain native vegetation on 80% of their landholding as a “legal reserve” (reserva legal). Properties that clear forest beyond the 80% threshold carry a &#8220;forest debt&#8221; with a legal obligation to restore equivalent forest cover. For Antonio Cardozo, a local rancher who has planted hundreds of native trees, the switch has improved his cattle’s diet and health, while also providing him with additional sources of food and income. “Learning has a cost, but in a few years you start to see a difference,” says Cardozo, who has been combining trees with rotational grazing, a practice that keeps the soil intact and allows grass to regrow. In less than a year, this practice allowed him to more than double the number of cows he grazes per hectare Livestock farming is responsible for roughly 80% of the deforestation in the Amazon Basin and 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions globally. Yet agricultural solutions receive just 7% of global climate funding and were absent from the recent COP30 climate summit agreement. According to some researchers, planting trees in pastures, an agroforestry technique known as silvopasture, represents one of the most effective yet neglected opportunities to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Under ideal conditions, silvopasture sequesters carbon in trees and soils while providing better forage and shade to heat-stressed cows, leading to healthier animals that emit less methane and occupy less land. But, increasingly over the past several decades, Bosawás has also become host to cattle ranches and gold mines, at the cost of its rainforest. Despite its designation as a UNESCO site, Bosawás Biosphere Reserve has lost more than 30% of its primary forest cover since the turn of the century, according to satellite data from the University of Maryland’s Global Land Analysis and Discovery lab and visualized on the monitoring platform Global Forest Watch. Deforestation surged to a record high in 2024, with 740 km2 (286 mi2) — 10% of the reserve’s land area — cleared in a single year. A satellite image captured April 2025 by Sentinel 2b shows recently deforested areas in Bosawás Biosphere Reserve. The data show fire activity in Bosawás also rose in 2024, with 35% of annual tree cover loss caused by fire, representing a 700% jump from 2023. Preliminary data for 2025 indicate forest loss has continued this year, with satellite imagery showing telltale patches of brown spreading ever deeper into Bosawás’s remaining old-growth rainforest. This has given Triunfo do Xingu the dubious distinction of being the protected area with the highest rate of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. The main cause? Cattle. Triunfo do Xingu lies in the heart of Brazil’s cattle country, where cows outnumber people 38 to one. To feed this legion of cattle, ranchers carve pasture from forest, often using slash-and-burn techniques to clear areas and renew degraded soil. 							<![CDATA[Amid growing pressure for beef supply chains to be deforestation-free, a new certification system in Brazil will allow meatpackers, importers and retailers to guarantee that the meat cuts they sell are not associated with deforestation. Down the line, this could also help companies become compliant with the European Union’s regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR). The voluntary Beef on Track (BoT) label, launched by the Institute of Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification (Imaflora) in October and due to come into effect in 2026, is the first certification of its kind to guarantee deforestation-free beef. It will do so by building on existing monitoring, reporting and verification protocols adopted by the meat industry, rather than by designing new systems. “We’re not reinventing the wheel; we’re giving visibility to processes that already exist,” said Marina Guyot, Imaflora’s executive manager for climate, land use and public policy. Imaflora was involved in creating two initiatives that encourage best practices in the beef industry through monitoring, reporting and verification in recent years: the Beef on Track program (Boi na Linha in Portuguese) for beef produced in the Amazon, set up in 2019, and the Cerrado Protocol, launched in 2024. Companies that are already 95% compliant with these protocols are automatically eligible for BoT’s lowest certification level. Imaflora plans to develop similar frameworks for other Brazilian biomes in the future. But this approach does not accurately represent the larger-scale damage caused to nature, says study co-author David Edwards, a professor of plant ecology at the University of Cambridge. When forests are converted to pasture, some species win and others lose, he explains, and measuring the biodiversity loss at a local scale does not capture the larger-scale effect of these land clearances, which are occurring across the ranges of many different species. “When people want to understand the wider impact of deforestation on biodiversity, they tend to do a local survey and extrapolate the results,” Edwards tells Mongabay in a phone interview. “But the problem is that tree clearance is occurring at massive spatial scales, across all sorts of different habitats and elevations.” By focusing on isolated sites, researchers were missing how these effects accumulate across regions, he says. Brazilian meatpacking giant Marfrig spent $1 billion from bonds it issued to buy cattle from a ranch linked to its board chair — with some of that cattle originating from illegally deforested areas of the Amazon and Cerrado, an investigation has found. Marfrig Global Foods SA, which bills itself as the world’s largest hamburger producer, has raised 11 billion reais ($2 billion) since 2019 from issuing a type of corporate bond known in Brazil as an agribusiness receivables certificate (CRA). Half of that amount — 5.5 billion reais, or $1 billion — was used exclusively to purchase cattle from feedlots run by MFG Agropecuária, whose managing partner is Marfrig&#8217;s board chairman, Marcos Antonio Molina dos Santos. Bondholders include individual investors, buying through brokerage apps or indirectly via financial operators. Part of the money went toward buying cattle originating from illegally deforested areas of the Amazon Rainforest and Cerrado savanna, according to an investigation by Joio e o Trigo (republished by Mongabay), in partnership with the Center for Climate Crime Analysis (CCCA), a nonprofit organization that supports global climate action. MFG, indicated in CRA documents as the rural producer receiving the proceeds of the bond issuance, purchases cattle from other suppliers, known as indirect suppliers. The last of these bonds matures in 2032. According to a 2024 public document Marfrig shared with investors, 100% of cattle purchased by the six MFG feedlots are sold to Marfrig slaughterhouses. During 12 years of research expeditions, the valley has revealed to us not only the intimate lives of its wildlife but also the shifting ways in which people use this land. During our most recent fieldwork in July 2025, however, we observed changes that raise serious concern. Large numbers of goats and sheep were being grazed in areas once dominated by yak herds, directly overlapping with the habitats of the valley’s key carnivores: Himalayan wolf, snow leopard, lynx and brown bear. Fragmentation, the process by which large areas of intact forest become broken up into smaller pieces, is increasing in most of the world’s forests, according to a new Science study authored by Crowther and other researchers at institutions in Switzerland, Australia, China, the U.S. and the UK.   The study finds that more than 50% of the world’s forests became more fragmented between 2000 and 2020. Tropical forests fared the worst, with the findings indicating that up to 80% were fragmented over 20 years. This has profound implications for global biodiversity and ecosystem health, Crowther says. “[T]he scary thing is, even if we kept the same amount of forest area on the planet, if we&#8217;re turning those big intact ones into all the tiny fragments, we&#8217;re losing a lot of the ecological functionality.” Fragmentation can happen in different ways and for different reasons. Shifting cultivation can pockmark intact forests with clearings. New roads into previously intact areas can bring miners or loggers, creating a dendritic pattern of forest loss. Experts Mongabay spoke to agree the EUDR promises to become a landmark legislative tool for curbing commodities supply chain-related deforestation at the international level. But those analysts also warn of “unintended consequences” built into the law that could imperil the initiative’s objectives and effectiveness and in some cases raise the risk of further deforestation or land use change spreading to other ecosystems. Once it is implemented, the EUDR requires producers of a wide range of commodities — including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and wood — prove their products are not being sourced from land deforested after Dec. 31, 2020. EUDR implementation was delayed in 2024 when transnational companies and commodity producing nations complained to the EU of being unprepared for the law. That hiatus raised widespread concerns the delay might be used for “watering down” the statute. But the postponement could also allow time for potential EUDR defects to be addressed. The Rainforest Alliance, for example, which has supported the law from its inception, “definitely saw the unintended consequences from the start,” says Fanny Gauttier, the NGO’s European public affairs lead. Prime among those unintended consequences, she says, is the possibility of the EUDR accidentally excluding many of the world’s smallholder farmers. Other experts point to the potential “leakage” of commodities once destined for EUDR nations being shipped to unregulated markets. 							<![CDATA[Since the first scientific critiques of fossil fuels, oil companies have gone from being the &#8220;wealth of nations&#8221; to &#8220;destroyers of the planet.&#8221; In financial market terms, they have become environmental liabilities. It cannot be said, however, that they have also become economic liabilities. The global carbon credit market is heating up — quite like the planet — and oil companies are among the main players interested in leveraging this business. Among the world&#8217;s largest oil producers, countries on the Arabian Peninsula, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have partnered with Brazil’s Minerva Foods. It is the country’s second-largest meatpacker by net revenue, trailing only JBS — a giant firm whose supply chain has been linked to deforestation. In 2021, Minerva’s subsidiary MyCarbon 3 Ltda was created for a single purpose: to generate and sell carbon credits. However, the company’s projects are far from transparent. Currently under validation by Verra, the world’s leading carbon credits certifier, these initiatives aim to restore degraded pasturelands in the Cerrado. This biodiverse savanna ecosystem, which comprises around 20% of Brazil’s territory, is home to part of Minerva’s cattle supply chain and has already lost half of its native vegetation. The main cause of deforestation in the Cerrado is the activity that feeds Minerva&#8217;s meatpacking plants, farming. Partnerships between oil companies and carbon credit companies are emerging as a global trend. 							<![CDATA[Agricultural expansion in two Brazilian states has cleared a U.K -sized area of jaguar habitat, nearly a fifth of which occurred in the last decade alone, a new report shows. About 27 million hectares (67 million acres) of wild jaguar habitat have been lost as of 2023 in the Amazonian states of Pará and Mato Grosso, with 5 million hectares (12 million acres) deforested just in the period from 2014-2023, according to the report by environmental and human rights advocacy group Global Witness. It attributes part of this loss to ranches indirectly supplying cattle to meatpacking giant JBS, with nearly all of the deforestation since 2013 being illegal.  The report comes amid pushback against environmental enforcement efforts at the state level in Brazil, and as the country prepares to host the U.N.’s annual climate summit, COP30, in November. Jaguars (Panthera onca) need intact forests to live and hunt in, and are a keystone species, which means that any change to their territories affects the entire ecosystem they inhabit. According to ICV, 526,459 hectares (approximately 1.3 million acres) of native vegetation — an area about 50 times the size of Paris — was cleared largely in the Amazon Rainforest to raise cattle for the company’s beef supply chain. The findings are the latest in a series of deforestation allegations against the French retailer in Latin America, where it operated more than 3,000 grocery stores until recently. In 2021, a coalition of 11 Colombian and Brazilian environmental and Indigenous organizations sued Casino Group in France for environmental damage and human rights violations. The case remains ongoing in the Paris courts. Raquel Carvalho, author of the ICV report, told Mongabay that it took a year to uncover the new data. “There’s great difficulty in measuring the deforestation caused by beef sold in grocery stores,” she said. “The main challenge is the lack of traceability between cattle suppliers and these stores. Camp Simpirre, just next to the town of Gotu, is an unusual setting for an academic conference, but the Drylands Summer School isn’t a typical conference. Isiolo county, a sparsely populated, arid acacia-studded range where most people make their living herding livestock, is right where researchers who study pastoralism want to be. Hussein Tadicha Wario, executive director at the Center for Research and Development in Drylands, a pastoralist research institute based in the area that planned and convened the conference, said the setting is part of the lesson plan. High-level conversations about pastoralism, a lifestyle that still dominates large swaths of East Africa, are often held in Nairobi and other big cities. Moving livestock across vast landscapes in rhythm with seasonal change and environmental conditions, pastoralist cultures rely on freedom of movement and shared arrangements over how to use the commons. It’s a lifestyle practiced by between 200 million and 300 million people globally, typically featuring a strong connection to land and rich spiritual practices based on their relationship to the elements. Pastoralists are often a crucial link in the food security chain; East African herders, for example, provide as much as 90% of the meat consumed in the region and half of its milk. They are also under increasing pressure across the world. Climate-related drought, infrastructure projects on the land they graze — and in some cases conservation projects — are squeezing herders, particularly in Africa. At times portrayed as a threat to wildlife and nature, a growing body of research suggests that pastoralists play a critical role in keeping the planet’s rangeland ecosystems healthy. Today, pastoral communities feature prominently in the continent’s conservation efforts, as well as some of its most heated conflicts. In Kenya, they’re at the core of efforts to build community-led sanctuaries for elephants, lions and other wildlife. 							<![CDATA[CORUMBAÍBA, Brazil — They appeared at dusk. The day was ending in a pink-and-yellow sky when a cub moved in the grass. Its mother appeared next, red as the earth, small, slender. Krahô-Kanela is an experienced mom, having had at least four litters in her estimated six years of life. Having had numerous partners, she’s now with MacDonald, her fifth mate and stepfather to her three new pups. The cycle of life has taken away her partners and also the tip of her tail, but she’s resilient in her journey through the cattle ranches in the municipality of Corumbaíba, in Brazil’s Goiás state. The hoary fox or hoary zorro (Lycalopex vetulus) is a small but superlative animal: the smallest canid species in Brazil, the only one endemic not only to the Cerrado but also to the country as a whole, and the only one that feeds mainly on termites. That last bit is why it inhabits the biome’s clean, open fields, where vegetation is lower and termite mounds are more visible. It usually lives in burrows dug by six-banded armadillos (Euphractus sexcinctus). The litter is born in September, and mother and father share the tasks of raising the babies, searching for food and guarding the den to keep predators away. The pups begin to wean in December, when parental care is gradually reduced. 							<![CDATA[In recent years, there has been an enormous increase in awareness about the importance of rainforests to global ecosystems and economies. Meanwhile, another biome – one that covers more than half of the Earth’s terrestrial surface and is similarly important to tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation – has been overlooked. Rangelands, despite their size and significance, have been historically under-appreciated in global sustainability discussions. However, as this “triple COP” year of three UN summits draws to a close, we have an opportunity to reverse this trend. By giving rangelands the consideration and support they deserve, their potential to help lower emissions, reduce biodiversity loss, and reverse land degradation can be realized. Rangelands cover more than 79 million square kilometers of grasslands, savannas, deserts, shrublands, and tundra globally. But they are more than just expansive open landscapes – rangelands are central to global economies, ecosystems, and cultures. It’s common across this flooded ecosystem, a mix of savanna and wetlands that spreads over more than 125,000 hectares (about 308,900 acres) in northern Bolivia. Although they are vital nesting sites and source of food for the critically endangered blue-throated macaw (Ara glaucogularis), motacú palms also attract unwanted visitors. Cattle seeking refuge from the water have long consumed these islands’ understories and exhausted their soils, undermining tree development and endangering macaws. These islands are not the only ones vulnerable. Beni’s grasslands and forests are threatened by intensive grazing and encroaching rice and soy crops. But in the last 15 years or so, efforts to protect ecosystems and more recently, to involve the ranching community in conservation, have increased.   The Barba Azul Reserve – named after the Spanish name for the blue-throated macaw – spreads over 11,000 hectares (27,180 acres) in the Yacuma province of Beni. It contains a variety of ecosystems, from gallery forests and savannas to wetlands and secondary forests. The reserve was created in 2008 by Asociación Civil Armonia, a bird conservation NGO, which acquired the land to protect the rare macaws, whose populations had dropped dramatically since the 1970s. Letting livestock graze freely inside areas set aside for wildlife, the argument goes, can bring them to ruin. Grasses that a wildebeest or buffalo might eat are instead consumed by cattle, turning green areas barren and forcing the non-domestic animals into smaller pockets. It’s an argument with a lot of traction, undergirding policies in conservation areas across East Africa that amount to “no cattle allowed.” And there’s research to back it up. But a group of scientists say data they gathered over 19 months in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR) tells a different story. Their study, published in September, is causing a stir in the world of ecologists who work in the Maasai Mara — and among tourism operators there. The Maasai are barred from bringing their herds into the MMNR, and if they’re caught they face stiff penalties. Still, some do it anyway, especially when there are droughts or during the annual dry season. Several monitoring organizations — including the Spatial Production Allocation Model (SPAM), the Atlas of Pastures and Amazon Mining Watch — have released or updated satellite data and visualization tools this year that show what kinds of crops are being grown, where cattle ranching overlaps with other kinds of land use and how much of the rainforest is being cleared for mining. “We’re seeing all these products starting to come out with all these recent advances in satellite imagery, machine learning and AI,” Matt Finer, director and senior research specialist of Amazon Conservation’s Monitoring of the Andean Amazon Project (MAAP), told Mongabay. “To be able to do a direct comparison between crops, cattle and mining — I think it’s very compelling.” MAAP compiled the data into one report this month, creating an “overall estimate” of land use across the nine Amazon countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Suriname, French Guyana and Guyana. It could help identify new patterns and trends in drivers of deforestation, Finer said. The data shows that at least 40 different crops are present in the Amazon, amounting to over 106 million hectares (261 million acres), or around 13% of the biome, according to SPAM, a crop distribution platform. 							<![CDATA[If you’re in the United States, your meal might come with a side of deforestation.  The US imported palm oil, cattle products, soybeans, cocoa, rubber, coffee and corn linked to an estimated 122,800 hectares (303,445 acres) of tropical deforestation between October 2021 and November 2023 — an area the size of the city of Los Angeles, according to a new report provided by the NGO Trase for Global Witness. More than a third (33.8%) of the deforestation was linked to oil palm imports, primarily from Indonesia. Cattle products, sourced mainly from Brazil, Australia and Mexico, were the second-largest contributor, at 31.8%. Coffee placed third, at 24.2%, followed by cocoa (7.6%), soybeans (2%), corn (0.37%) and rubber (0.15%). “I think it&#8217;s quite striking how palm oil was potentially quite a big source of deforestation exposure for the U.S. as a commodity that has received lots of attention,” Mark Titley, senior research associate at Trase, told Mongabay. Several Latin American countries were identified as significant sources of deforestation. Brazil was the second-largest contributor to U.S. deforestation exposure, primarily through cattle products. Colombia was the source of nearly a fifth of the deforestation linked to U.S. coffee imports. Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Honduras also contributed, mainly by exporting cattle products, coffee and cocoa. Domestic beef production in Brazil could drop by 25% by 2050 as governments and the private sector look to step up climate change and forest conservation strategies, according to a new report from Orbitas, an initiative of Climate Advisers. The industry will have to find ways to adapt soon or else risk major losses. “The future of the Brazilian cattle sector is set to look very different to how it appears and operates today,” said Orbitas director Niamh McCarthy in a statement. “The sector has real climate risks it needs to contend with if it is to remain a significant contributor to Brazil’s GDP.” Brazil has the second-largest number of cattle in the world at around 232 million, according to FAO, and contributes about 20% of the world’s beef exports. The industry has grown massively over the last several decades, but often at the expense of important biomes like the Amazon Rainforest and Cerrado. Cattle pasture and agriculture for cattle feed are some of the top drivers of deforestation in those biomes, which act as carbon sinks helping prevent climate change. The IFACC, or Financial Innovation for Amazonia, the Cerrado and Chaco, is led by the Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). There are 16 signing entities, including Spanish lender Banco Santander and Swiss-based agrochemical producer Syngenta. “We see an important role not only from the financial sector, which is placing money on the table, but also from companies that depend on soybean and cattle farming in Brazil who are helping [the initiative],” said Danielle Carreira, director of financial sector engagement at the TFA. She said the initiative’s main objective is to place farmers on the sustainability agenda while still allowing them to increase their operations. “We want to give farmers a voice in this conversation.” Of the 11 projects funded by the initiative, seven are in the Cerrado, Brazil’s megadiverse savanna biome, and received 98% of the funding allocated to date, or $234.5 million. But until recently, Leshinga hadn’t figured out how to help his livestock compete for pasture with wildlife, or stay safe from predators; while settled pastoralists here often build a boma (a permanent corral or shed) to protect their herds at night, people like him who range farther from home often struggle to prevent predation. And when rangelands become degraded and wild grazers lessen in number, the predators in Kenya’s complex Maasai Mara food chain target livestock more frequently. A breakthrough for herders like Leshinga came in 2017, when mobile bomas were introduced at Enonkishu Conservancy. These are movable, wire-meshed enclosures in which pastoralists keep their livestock at night, safe from predators. Every 10 days during the dry season, locals responsible for a boma pool their labor to manually move the sheds to a new site, usually with hand carts or carrying the pieces by hand. In March 2023, gathered in Xinguara municipality, in Pará state, known as the “fat cattle capital,” some of the country’s largest cattle breeders debate an ESG agenda for the sector. Not long ago, the deforestation caused by cattle ranching in the Amazon Rainforest was of no concern to livestock farmers. But now, in the face of the climate emergency, they are under pressure. Investors, the meat industry, buyers and consumers know the link between cattle and Brazilian Amazon devastation. For cattle breeders, ignoring the problem has become a business risk. And none of them wants to lose money. “We can produce more with fewer natural resources, reconciling food and climate security,” Francisco Victer, coordinator of Pará’s Beef Alliance, the ESG event organizer, told Mongabay by phone. “Every farmer, even the most conservative, most resistant, accepts this improvement is necessary for the current scenario.” One of the topics discussed at the &#8220;fat cattle capital&#8221; was cattle tracking, which experts point to as the primary tool for curbing deforestation from ranching. The individual identification of 100% of the Brazilian herd is far away. Still, a series of recent decisions by different players in the meat chain shows the quest for traceability is progressing. In March 2023, the Brazilian Bank Federation (FEBRABAN) approved new rules for releasing credit to meatpackers and slaughterhouses in Amazonian states. 							<![CDATA[Rancher Bruno Heller, arrested at the beginning of the month and identified by the Brazilian Federal Police as the &#8220;greatest devastator of the Amazon,&#8221; transported cattle from a family farm fined for environmental violations to two other properties free from environmental implications, in 2021 and 2022. During the same period, these properties sold animals to a Carrefour supplier slaughterhouse. This practice is an indication of so-called &#8220;cattle laundering,&#8221; in which cattle raised in irregular locations are passed on to areas considered to have a &#8220;clean record&#8221; and subsequently sold to major meatpacking plants. The maneuver is commonly used to bypass control mechanisms and is considered one of the main sustainability challenges in the Brazilian meat industry. Animal transit information obtained by Repórter Brasil, a Brazilian news outlet, shows that animals raised on the Formosa II farm, fined for illegal deforestation and suspected of land-grabbing, were transferred in 2021 and 2022 to Formosa V and Formosa VI, free from environmental implications. These two properties, owned by Bruno Heller&#8217;s daughters, sold animals to the Vale Grande slaughterhouse, a Frialto group brand, in those same years. Frialto operates three meat plants in northern Mato Grosso, all authorized for export to the European Union and other countries. One of these units, located in a town called Matupá, in Mato Grosso state, acquired animals from the Heller family with suspicions of irregularities. In a new meta-analysis, researchers synthesized the findings of 320 studies about what is associated with more or less deforestation in the tropics. According to the study, published in the journal Review of Environmental Economics and Policy, converting land for farming and raising cattle is a significant driver of deforestation. In the Amazon, for example, 70% of deforestation has been linked to clearing for cattle pastures. Building more roads and expanding cities into forests almost always leads to more deforestation in tropical areas. The more accessible a forest is, the more likely it is to be cut. Population growth also means more people cut forests for housing and farming. “They’re things that many people already know,” study co-author Jonah Busch of Conservation International told Mongabay in an email. “But we can state them with the confidence that comes from a comprehensive, systematic, quantitative, review of hundreds of studies over 24 years.” Fires blaze across the Amazon forest in Altamira in Pará in 2019, one of the state’s worst years for fires and deforestation. These open, uninterrupted lands are threatened by degradation, changing vegetation, and diminishing soil quality. The Northern Communal Areas (NCAs) make up a fifth of Namibia’s landmass but are home to about half of the country’s population and cattle, in part a legacy of colonial relocation. The 1.2 million people living here are predominantly pastoralists and agropastoralists, herding livestock using traditional methods. Between 1970 and 2020, Namibia&#8217;s population tripled in size. This and the reduced mobility of herds are adding to the stress on these unfenced lands, according to anthropologist Michael Bollig. Apart from direct human pressures, climatic disruptions are also leading to greater aridity and promoting woody encroachment. In the south of the country, individuals own stretches of rangeland as private property, with each landowner making their own decisions about herd size and grazing, and managing their land with more or less success. But in the NCAs, communities displaced from richer, more hospitable land in the south to make way for settlers have had to adapt their traditional herding practices and economies to a new landscape.
