But how does this work when they hunt animals that flock, school or swarm, forming bewildering displays that appear to move everywhere all at once? A study published today in Nature Communications reports that Swainson’s hawks (Buteo swainsoni) and some other raptors solve this problem by aiming toward a fixed point in space within a swarm, rather than focusing on one particular animal. “This study gives new meaning to the concept of ‘keeping your eyes on the prize!’” Nico Arcilla, president of the International Bird Conservation Partnership, who was not involved in the study, told Mongabay in an email. “Except that in the case of Swainson&#8217;s Hawks attacking bats in a flock, apparently the key to success is keeping their eyes off the prize, off the individual bats themselves … and on the fixed point that is their target.” Composite frame sequence of a Swainson’s hawk attacking swarming Mexican free-tailed bats at a bat cave in New Mexico, USA. 							<![CDATA[Near the city of Socorro in the state of New Mexico lies a small spring. It is only here where one of the most endangered isopods, the Socorro isopod (Thermosphaeroma thermophilum), lives. Also known as the Socorro sowbug, they are a species of isopod commonly referred to as roly-polies, or woodlice. They are not insects but actually are crustaceans, more closely related to crabs and shrimp than insects. The Socorro isopods are brown and live underwater in a thermal spring with temperatures ranging from 77 to 91 degrees Fahrenheit. Socorro isopods are important omnivores in their ecosystem. Like their terrestrial counterparts, Socorro isopods consume detritus, which is dead and decaying matter such as leaves, dead plants, and rotting wood, that can accumulate in the water. They also feed on algae. In ponds and other bodies of water, if there is an overabundance of algae, the algae produces toxins that kill fish and birds and are even harmful to humans. So, Socorro isopods, despite their limited range, play an important role within their ecosystem. Today, if you visit the native spring where they still live, you will see concrete pools and lighting set up around the spring vent, because the spring was used as a bathhouse in the early 1900s. “Where the concrete infrastructure exists, everything flows through it and those tanks just kind of guide the water. A hidden camera is the only witness to this scene in January 2019, in the Yaxchilán natural protected area of Mexico’s Chiapas state. Due to their solitary and nocturnal habits, it is rare to spot even one of the 115 jaguars that live here. Pac-Man, a young jaguar of around five years old and 55 kilos, prowled an area of 400km2 through Yaxchilán and Chan-Kin, at times crossing the mighty Usumacinta River. This was the last time Pac-Man was recorded before he ended up in the hands of poachers. Jaguars are trafficked for their fangs, claws, heads and genitals. The total price of parts from one animal, which are especially coveted by some wealthy Chinese, can reach US$20,000. “Pac-Man rings alarm bells about the Chinese illegal trade in search of the jaguar in Mexican territory,” said Dr Rodrigo Medellín, whose laboratory at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is dedicated to studying jaguars in the Lacandon jungle. Now a scientist is turning the tables, building a handheld device that analyzes the odor of wolf scat to determine the age, gender, and individual identity of the animal that left it. The goal is to improve estimates of the size and demographics of endangered Mexican gray wolf populations, and ultimately to help bring back the wolf and restore greater balance to the forests of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. The Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) is &#8220;the smallest, southern-most occurring, rarest, and most genetically distinct subspecies of gray wolf in North America,&#8221; according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) website. By the 1970s the subspecies had nearly been wiped out throughout its native range. An intensive eradication effort targeted the wolves after they began attacking livestock when their natural prey populations declined as cattle and sheep ranching took hold in the region. After wolves were listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, recovery efforts led to the first reintroduction of 11 captive-bred Mexican gray wolves to the wild, in 1998.
