He had “an unusual request,” he recounts telling friends in the U.K. who owned a private jet: A bunch of geckos needed to be evacuated. Mauritius had just entered COVID-19 lockdown, its airspace was closed, so it would have to be a special flight. Amid the chaos of the pandemic, the island nation had been hit by one of the worst environmental disasters in its history. On July 25, the MV Wakashio crashed onto coral reefs off Mauritius’ southeastern coast, later spilling around 1,000 metric tons of oil. In time, the slick spread north, creeping to the islets that line the coast. These are home to threatened lesser night geckos (Nactus coindemirensis), prompting Tatayah to call for their evacuation. The oil spill occurred near Blue Bay Marine Park, a coral hotspot, and two other protected sites: the Pointe d&#8217;Esny Wetland (a Ramsar site blessed with rich mangroves ) and the Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve. Oil started leaking from the ship in the first week of August. On Aug. 15, the Wakashio broke in two. In the days following the spill, ocean currents nudged the floating oil northward toward Vieux-Grand-Port. At its most expansive, the oil spill covered nearly 30 square kilometers (11.6 square miles) of coastal waters. While surveying one of the last remaining patches of renosterveld shrubland in South Africa’s Paarl region, near Cape Town, he and his team of citizen scientists found a small, yellow-flowered daisy species: Marasmodes undulata. It had long been thought extinct, with the last 200-strong population observed at the same location near the town of Paarl in the 1980s. Now, Ebrahim’s team had discovered an even smaller population, numbering just 27 individuals. The citizen scientists had to act quickly to stave off species oblivion. Competing vegetation was choking out the small daisies, so Ebrahim’s team took the calculated risk of setting fire to the site to level the playing field and stimulate seedling growth for the fire-adapted daisy. But no M. undulata reappeared at first, and those popping up in subsequent years disappeared. “Every time we went back to the site, we found less plants,” Ebrahim recalls. Why put so much focus on conserving a diminutive shrubland flower? Among the diverse inhabitants of the renosterveld, few species are more easily overlooked than M. undulata, which botanist Donovan Kirkwood, the curator of the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden affectionately called the “ugly duckling daisy” before his untimely death in August. But just like other renosterveld plants, M. undulata belongs there, forming part of an ecosystem that becomes more sensitive to collapse with every species that is lost. This type of annual synchronized spawning is crucial to the survival of these corals. Now, scientists are pinning their hopes of saving corals battered by climate change on this natural phenomenon. A team of researchers from Mauritius and abroad is preparing to collect millions of larvae from Blue Bay this October. It’s part of one of the largest projects in the Western Indian Ocean, aimed at restoring corals through sexual propagation. “The project really starts from scratch,” says Gaëlle Quéré, marine scientist and project lead at Secore International, one of the partners for the Mauritius project launched in 2024. “The main objectives in the first year are to understand which species are spawning and when they&#8217;re spawning.” Secore, short for SExual COral REproduction, is a U.S.-based research nonprofit. The project itself is spearheaded by the Mauritius-based Odysseo Oceanarium, an expansive aquarium showcasing marine species. In the pink of health — and red, blue, green and purple — corals resemble underwater fireworks, forming glorious landscapes pulsating with marine life. But the latest episode of mass coral bleaching, starting in 2023 and stretching into 2025, has left much of the coral world gasping for life. Mass bleaching occurs when an oceanic heat wave sweeps across the planet, leaving dead and damaged corals in its wake. Such events are amplified by the climate crisis. The island nation of Mauritius, off the east coast of Africa, is home to nearly 250 kinds of corals, and it wasn’t spared. This March, ocean heat waves bleached 80% of corals in Mauritian waters, according to Pierre Edgard Daniel Marie, director of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI). Coral reef systems may have already reached a point of no return. Scientists estimate that warm-water corals, like those found in Mauritius, reach their tipping point when the temperature rises by 1.2° Celsius (nearly 2.2° Fahrenheit). The planet has seen an average increase of 1.4°C (2.5°F), according to the 2025 Global Tipping Points report. Scientists say humans could be one generation away, by the year 2050, from losing nearly all healthy coral reefs due to climate change. With them, entire ecosystems would disappear; coral reefs shelter a quarter of all marine species. Their flourishing flocks belie the predation and habitat destruction that nearly drove these colorful songbirds to extinction in their original habitat. Twenty years ago, conservationists began breeding the birds in captivity and releasing them on the little limestone islet they now call home. The fodies (Foudia rubra) have since thrived to the point that they’re no longer considered critically endangered. “We thought we were going to have to do a lot of intensive work for decades, but they bounced back so nicely on the island,” says Vikash Tatayah, conservation director of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, a conservation NGO that ran the project. Returning lost species to their former stomping grounds or moving them to new, safer locales is a critical conservation technique called conservation translocation. But research shows it only works about half the time. With 1 million species headed toward extinction over the next few decades, scientists are urgently trying to work out how to improve the strategy’s odds of success. “Moving species around has been an extremely important tool in the past. If we can improve the likelihood of succeeding in future, then it will become a much more reliable tool in the fight against large-scale biodiversity loss,” says Shane Morris, a conservation ecologist at the University of Tasmania, Australia. Now, it’s a conservation marvel, acting as an example for the translocation and reintroduction of other species too. A team of scientists from five organizations analyzed the long-term trends of four isolated populations of reintroduced Mauritius kestrels in their recent paper published in the IBIS: International Journal of Avian Science. Their findings help shed light on the key ingredients for successful wildlife reintroductions, a conservation practice where scientists raise newborn animals in captivity and release them into the wild to boost population numbers. Mauritius, an island smaller than the U.S. state of Rhode Island, lies 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. 							<![CDATA[A Japanese ship that wrecked off the coast of Mauritius in July and sparked one of the worst environmental disasters in the country’s history may have run aground because of birthday celebrations on board at the time. That’s according to a statement from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), in the latest development from the July 25 wrecking of the Panama-flagged and Japanese-owned M.V. Wakashio, a bulk carrier. The ship, bound for Brazil from Singapore, was sailing through Mauritian waters when it ran aground on a coral reef and leaked almost 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil. In its statement published in Spanish on Sept. 7, the AMP, which is collaborating in the investigation into the accident, said the ship diverted its navigation plan, possibly in relation to “the celebration of the birthday of one of the crew members.” &#8220;[T]he change of course is produced by indications of the captain of the boat, who gave instructions to approach about 5 miles away from the coast of Mauritius, looking for a telephone and internet signal, so that the crew members could communicate with their families,&#8221; the AMP said. The Wakashio&#8217;s captain was taken into custody on Aug. 18 for endangering safe navigation. According to the government, the ship had failed to respond to several calls from the Mauritian Coast Guard. Mauritius&#8217;s environment minister, Kavydass Ramano, called it an &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; crisis, and the prime minister declared a national emergency on Aug. 7, a day after oil began leaking from its tank. Thirty-nine of the mammals have beached in the week to Aug. 28. Social media is awash with photos of the stranded animals, including mothers and calves. At a press conference Sudheer Maudhoo, the Mauritian fisheries, marine resources and shipping minister, called the beachings a &#8220;sad coincidence.&#8221; Though a link between the deaths and oil contamination has yet to be established, disaffection has swelled in the aftermath of the spill, with protesters taking to the streets of the capital, Port Louis, and wielding an inflatable dolphin with &#8220;Inaction&#8221; written on it. The Wakashio struck the coral reef barrier off the country&#8217;s southeastern coast on July 25; the damage to its fuel tankers led to a leak on Aug. 6. Wakashio, had rammed into the island nation&#8217;s coral reef barrier on July 25. In the weeks since the crash, it leaked almost 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil into the sea. Oil-laden waves crashed on the shore, and greasy residue settled on coral reefs and slunk into the mangrove forests that clutch the eastern coast of the island. At least 30 kilometers (19 miles) of shoreline is heavily affected. The country is still trying to mop up the oil, but another problem now looms large: what to do with the broken halves of the ship? This week the Mauritian government floated the idea of sinking the severed bow 13 km (8 mi) off the east coast, in open waters 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) deep. On Aug. 17, two tugs started this operation. The move has proved controversial. &#8220;Out of all available options, the Mauritian government is choosing the worst one,&#8221; Happy Khambule, Greenpeace Africa senior climate and energy campaign manager, said in a statement. &#8220;Sinking this vessel would risk biodiversity and contaminate the ocean with large quantities of heavy metal toxins, threatening other areas as well, notably the French island of La Réunion.&#8221; The French minister for overseas departments, Sébastien Lecornu, who visited Mauritius on Aug. 16, also appeared unimpressed with the plan. The ship, plying under a Panama flag, originated in China and was heading for Brazil. It was not carrying any cargo but did have 3,894 tons of low-sulfur fuel oil on board. That fuel oil is now sullying the waters of Mauritius. Over the weekend, oily sludge clogged the coastline, washing up on Mauritius’s pristine beaches and threatening a host of ecologically sensitive marine areas. The ship went aground on the reefs of Pointe d’Esny, a Ramsar site and the largest remaining wetland in Mauritius. The Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve, Blue Bay Marine Area and Mahebourg Fishing Reserves all lie close to the spill site. Coral reefs rising from the seafloor are natural breakwaters that create shallow lagoons near the shore. It grows only in the mountains of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius; it’s the only species in the genus Roussea; and the only species in the entire subfamily Rousseoideae. It’s also down to just 250-odd individuals in the wild, which means that most people will likely never encounter it in their lifetime. For Prishnee Bissessur, it was love at first sight. Before 2014, though, Bissessur had never climbed a Mauritian mountain and never seen the plant. But prodded by her professor at the University of Mauritius, who was hoping she would study the rare plant, she hiked up the thumb-shaped Le Pouce mountain in the northwest of the tiny island to see what the fuss was all about. Close to the summit, R. simplex, a plant with woody vines that scramble atop other trees, was in bloom, displaying its pendulous yellow flowers in full glory. “They were so beautiful that anyone who would see them would fall in love,” Bissessur told Mongabay. Falling in love was one thing, but when Bissessur went back and started digging into the scientific literature on the species, she quickly realized that the plant was more complicated than she’d anticipated. “It’s called Roussea simplex, but it&#8217;s more like Roussea complex,” she said. Until now, growers and the government have been operating on the assumption, based on little evidence, that an endemic bat called the Mauritian flying fox (Pteropus niger) was responsible for much of the crop loss. But when Gareth Jones, a biology professor and bat expert at the University of Bristol, U.K., and his colleagues from Mauritius and the U.K. approached the question scientifically, they found that the picture was quite a bit more complicated. “It seems bizarre that a species that plays crucial ecological roles that is found nowhere else in the world should be culled to such a huge extent in the absence of reliable evidence about how much damage it causes and whether culling is an effective form of control,” Jones said in a statement. Government-sanctioned culls eradicated nearly 40,000 bats in 2015 and 2016. Those losses likely wiped out around 40 percent of the population. Lemur expert Patricia Wright won the award in 2014. Jones, who is Chief Scientist of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Scientific Director of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, was chosen as the winner from among six other finalists. 							<![CDATA[Despite widespread protests by conservation groups and citizens, Mauritius will start culling its native Mauritius fruit bats (Pteropus niger) tomorrow. These bats are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. According to a press statement released by Mauritius&#8217;s Ministry of Agro Industry and Food Security today, culling of 18,000 bats will begin on Saturday, November 7. The culling will be carried out from 6 PM to 6 AM in state forests &#8212; which includes national parks, nature reserves, mountain reserves, and river reserves &#8212; in collaboration with the Police Department and the Special Mobile Force. Media reports speculate that the bats will be killed using shotguns. The statement warns the public not to enter any state forest lands until further notice. &#8220;The Ministry will not be held responsible for any incident which may occur as a result of non-compliance with this communique,&#8221; the statement said. The culling will start mid-October and will go on for three weeks until the “target is attained,” Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, said at the sixth National Assembly of the Mauritian Parliament held on October 6. But conservationists are calling this decision “unacceptable” and “disgraceful.” “Culling is the most insensible, unscientific action that can be taken at this stage, as it will, at a cost, harm both the fruit producers and the native threatened biodiversity of the country,” Vincent Florens, Associate Professor of Ecology at the University of Mauritius, told Mongabay. The cull could be disastrous for the native bat species, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added in a statement. “The implementation of a cull will very likely result in an up-listing of the species from Vulnerable to Endangered or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, which will damage the reputation of Mauritius as a world leader on conservation,” the statement notes. A recent study published in the journal Biological Conservation demonstrates a new way to evaluate a conservation organization’s work in preventing extinctions by using the IUCN Red List Index (RLI) as a performance indicator. The study was led by Richard Young, head of conservation science at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and it examined Durrell&#8217;s own work as a case study. Durrell is a U.K.-based international non-profit organization that conducts long-term conservation programs to save species from extinction. The RLI is calculated from data in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, widely considered the most authoritative and objective database on the status of species. In the Red List of Threatened Species, species are assessed against criteria for geographic range and population size, structure, and trends. They are then assigned to categories of extinction risk: Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, and Extinct. From these assessments, scientists can calculate an RLI for any set of species. The RLI indicates the proportion of species that move through the IUCN Red List categories between periodic assessments, either away from or towards extinction. In their study, Young and his co-authors examined the fate of 17 species — one amphibian, seven mammals, and nine birds — that Durrell has worked to conserve in five countries. While scientists have long cataloged the impact of invasive animals on island wildlife, there has been less clarity when it comes to invasive plants. However, a new paper in mongabay.com&#8217;s open access journal Tropical Conservation Science has found that invasive plants do indeed negatively impact local species. &#8220;The impacts of invasive alien plants appear to be considerably less severe and, at times more debatable,&#8221; the researchers explain. &#8220;In particular, it can be challenging to disentangle the impacts of alien plants on native plants from the multitude of other impacting factors like habitat fragmentation, pathogens, browsers or seed predators.&#8221; But the researchers, from the University of Mauritius and The Mauritius Herbarium, saw an opportunity to study direct impacts when a weeding program of invasives occurred next to similar habitat that was non-weeded. Three female orange-tailed skinks skinks have produced 16 skink babies in just four months, according to the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (DWCT), which is captive breeding the Critically Endangered species. The breeding efforts are all the more remarkable since the females only produce two eggs at a time. Found only in the Mauritius, the species has been nearly exterminated by invasive predators, especially the Indian musk shrew. &#8220;Even in our wildest dreams, we couldn’t have hoped that the females would get off to such a flying start. They are clearly happy and healthy, and we are delighted that population numbers of the orange-tailed skink in Jersey are increasing so rapidly,&#8221; Matt Goetz, Head of Durrell’s Herpetology Department, said in a press release. The three females are apart of a group of 22 orange-tailed skinks that were taken from the wild population in hopes to start captive breeding as an insurance policy against extinction. Around 400 of the skinks were also moved to a predator-free island, Coin de Mire, in the Mauritius. The species is now extinct on its native island, Ile Plate. Hansen and M&uuml;ller found that the blue-tailed gecko (Phelsuma cepediana) &#8212; a species responsible for pollination and seed dispersal of the Roussea simplex shrub &#8212; avoids plants that have been colonized by the invasive white-footed ant (Technomyrmex albipes). Colonized individuals have lower seed counts, suggesting that ants are taking a toll on the rare species. The authors found that unlike alien invasive wasps and birds that fed on Trochetia blackburniana nectar without collecting pollen, the blue-tailed day gecko was tagged with pollen &#8220;either just behind the head or on the gecko&#8217;s throat and chest,&#8221; making it a crucial pollinator of the plant species.
