While surveying one of the last remaining patches of renosterveld shrubland in South Africa’s Paarl region, near Cape Town, he and his team of citizen scientists found a small, yellow-flowered daisy species: Marasmodes undulata. It had long been thought extinct, with the last 200-strong population observed at the same location near the town of Paarl in the 1980s. Now, Ebrahim’s team had discovered an even smaller population, numbering just 27 individuals. The citizen scientists had to act quickly to stave off species oblivion. Competing vegetation was choking out the small daisies, so Ebrahim’s team took the calculated risk of setting fire to the site to level the playing field and stimulate seedling growth for the fire-adapted daisy. But no M. undulata reappeared at first, and those popping up in subsequent years disappeared. “Every time we went back to the site, we found less plants,” Ebrahim recalls. Why put so much focus on conserving a diminutive shrubland flower? Among the diverse inhabitants of the renosterveld, few species are more easily overlooked than M. undulata, which botanist Donovan Kirkwood, the curator of the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden affectionately called the “ugly duckling daisy” before his untimely death in August. But just like other renosterveld plants, M. undulata belongs there, forming part of an ecosystem that becomes more sensitive to collapse with every species that is lost. Known as Rapa Nui to its inhabitants, who also go by the name Rapa Nui as a people, the island sits in a remote corner of the Pacific Ocean, 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) west of Chile. Like the mysterious stone Moai that line the landscape, there is more to this place than is visible from the surface. Some 142 marine species found nowhere else on Earth (27 of which are at risk of extinction) and 77 percent of the Pacific’s fish abundance thrive in the waters around Rapa Nui. An expedition in early 2017 uncovered even more species, some new to science, in the depths surrounding the island, many of which were striking shades of red and orange. In the depths of the ocean, as the sunlight fades, red wavelengths of light are absorbed first, rendering many of the new discoveries, such as the sunset-colored Anatolanthias fish and the ochre-hued sea biscuit (a burrowing, urchin-like creature) virtually invisible in the twilit water. Nearer the surface, coral reef fish like Pseudolabrus semifasciatus, a wrasse species splashed in purple, yellow and monochrome tiger stripes, are a vivid reminder of the region’s unique biodiversity. Project Eyes on the Seas is a surveillance platform that helps law enforcers at port swiftly detect and counter fisheries violations in expansive remote marine reserves through a centralized virtual watch room (VWR). It synthesizes and analyzes layers of information from different maritime tracking systems, real-time satellite images, proprietary databases, international fishing and marine reserve borders and environmental and oceanic data including depth and temperature. The system analyzes the compiled data and alerts analysts of suspicious activity, so that government enforcement action can focus on areas historically or currently exhibiting illicit fishing. It allows law enforcers to share information regarding illegal fishing operations, substantiate a case against them with evidence from analysts, track them into a port or enforcement vessels’ reach and prosecute them. Chilean president Michelle Bachelet has announced a new marine park to be established off the coast of Easter Island, 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) west of mainland Chile in the waters of the South Pacific. Comprising some 631,368 square kilometers (243,630 square miles), the new marine park will be the third-largest protected ocean area in the world, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts, which worked with the Rapa Nui, the indigenous people of Easter Island, on the proposal that led to the announcement by President Bachelet. The Rapa Nui proposed the park as a means to combat illegal fishing and protect the diversity of life teeming in the waters off the island’s shores, including 142 endemic species and 27 endangered or critically endangered species, among them bluefin tuna and leatherback sea turtles. The park will also allow the Rapa Nui to continue traditional fishing practices in an area that extends 50 nautical miles from the shore, according to Pew. Today the saga that is Easter Island&#8217;s past is well known. The tragic circumstances that led to the downfall of its early civilization through starvation and war are of epic proportions. Many scientists agree that the real life scenario born from this isolated island serves as a warning, about the interrelatedness between scarcity of natural resources and conflict, for all mankind. However, current natural resource practices suggest that this lesson has fallen on deaf ears. There is a strict sequence of events following an indiscriminate harvesting of forests: (1) removal of vegetation, (2) soil erosion, and (3) desertification and loss of land fertility, as experienced in Easter Island. Considering the way we are clear cutting our forests, urbanizing our natural areas, and abusing our water resources, there can be little doubt that our population is reaching a &#8220;peak&#8221; which will inevitably suffer a dramatic decline once the productivity of the land diminishes. The research is published in this week&#8217;s issue of the journal Science. Terry Hunt, an archaeologist with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a team of field researchers excavated archaeological deposits at the sand dunes of Anakena, the main canoe-landing spot on the island and found charcoal samples and rat-eaten palm nuts that dated to A.D. 1250. The discovery suggests that Easter Island was not settled until around the year 1200&#8212;400 to 800 years later than researchers originally estimated. Hunt said that he chose to reevaluate previous radiocarbon results published for Easter Island due to inconsistencies in data reflecting the history of human settlement. &#8220;It didn&#8217;t fit with what everyone believed about the island&#8217;s chronology,&#8221; said Hunt. Hunt and co-author Carl Lipo of California State University, Long Beach, applied a &#8220;chronometric hygiene&#8221; approach to exclude samples&#8212;like old wood and shells from marine animals&#8212;known to cause inaccuracies in radiocarbon dating. Butler, mongabay.com December 6, 2005 Rats and European traders may be responsible for the mysterious demise of Easter Island according to research presented last week by a University of Hawaii anthropologist during an American Anthropological Association meeting. Anthropologist Terry Hunt and colleagues say that introduced Polynesian rats may have caused the deforestation of the island&#8217;s 16 million palm trees which were key to sustaining Easter&#8217;s human population. The history of Easter Island, its statues and its peoples, has long been shrouded in mystery. Some have suggested that aliens marooned on earth planted the statues as signals to their fellow aliens to rescue them. Others have said that the statues were constructed by a great race of guilders that were stranded on the island and built them before being rescued. Still others are convinced that an ancient society endowed with flight technology constructed them along with the Nazca lines in Peru. However new evidence based on pollen analysis supports a much simpler theory, that the Easter Island inhabitants destroyed their own society through deforestation and the introduction of invasive species &#8212; specifically, a rat. When Easter Island was &#8220;discovered&#8221; by Europeans in 1722, it was a barren landscape with no trees over ten feet in height. 							<![CDATA[Polynesians came from Taiwan says new study Polynesians came from Taiwan says new study mongabay.com July 13, 2005 Polynesians, history&#8217;s greatest seafarers who settled islands across a vast area of ocean from Madagascar to Easter Island, originated in Taiwan, according to a new genetic study published in the journal Public Library of Science Biology. The study looked at mitochondrial DNA, which is passed along virtually unchanged from mothers to their children, to determine that clear similarities exist between nine indigenous Taiwan groups and ethnic Polynesians. Most Taiwanese today are decended from mainland Chinese who have arrived in the past four centuries. Jean Trejaut and Marie Lin of Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei lead the study and found that Taiwanese aboriginal populations have likely been genetically isolated from mainland Chinese for between 10,000 and 20,000 years. Press Release announcing the findings: Genetic techniques involving mitochondrial DNA ( mtDNA ) have been used to try and determine whether there is a link between Polynesians and other Southeast Asian populations by estimating how much mtDNA different populations have in common. Early results were conflicting or inconclusive; however, the research by Trejaut et al. has finally nailed this down. Trejaut et al. analyzed mtDNA from people in China, Southeast Asia, Polynesia, and Taiwan. The authors focused specifically on the aboriginal populations of Taiwan, suggested to be ancestors of today&#8217;s Polynesians, and looked for unique genetic markers that occurred in the aboriginal people.
