Uncertainty lies at every turn, yet for Antigua and Barbuda — and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like ours — navigating uncertainty is not new. It is our lived reality. I have witnessed firsthand how cascading shocks — climate events, market volatility, geopolitical fragmentation — strike our shores harder and faster. But while the world grapples with rising division and fraying international cooperation, small island nations are building stronger bonds and leading by example. For us, sustainable development is not ideological or aspirational — it is the foundation of our survival and the only viable path to a just, secure future. Though we represent less than 1% of the global population, SIDS manage nearly 19% of the world’s ocean space. We have emerged as natural leaders in marine stewardship, even as we face the gravest consequences of a crisis we did not cause. What may be manageable for larger economies can be devastating for us. My nation, which was devastated by a category 5 hurricane, Irma, in 2017, stands shoulder to shoulder with nations like the Maldives and Tuvalu, which may witness entire islands disappear beneath the waves. 							<![CDATA[Seven years ago, Redonda, a volcanic island in the Caribbean Sea, resembled the moon&#8217;s surface: a dusty, debris-covered, barren terrain. The island, which is part of Antigua and Barbuda, had once been mined for guano, seabird excrement used for fertilizer. However, mining operations on Redonda ceased around the start of World War I, and when the miners were gone, they left behind a legacy of rats and goats. Over the successive decades, the rats and goats stripped Redonda of its vegetation. Rocks and soil slid into the sea, damaging the reefs and seagrass and making it dangerous for anyone to venture onto the island. Then, in 2016, conservationists began removing the rats and goats to restore the island. They first used a rodenticide to eliminate the rats while not harming other biodiversity. Then, they captured and transported the small population of goats by helicopter off the island, most of whom had been starving due to the lack of food on Redonda. Native trees and grasses sprouted back. Seabirds like brown boobies (Sula leucogaster) and red-billed tropicbirds (Phaethon aethereus) recolonized the island. To help the island&#8217;s flora and fauna, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda is now initiating a plan to remove all goats and rats from the island. The Redonda Restoration Program  program has been formed by the Antigua &amp; Barbuda Government and the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) in collaboration with organizations like Fauna &amp; Flora International, British Mountaineering Council, Island Conservation and Wildlife Management International Ltd. “This work will dramatically transform an entire island ecosystem,” Sophia Steele of Fauna &amp; Flora International told Mongabay. “It will save a number of rare endemic species from otherwise almost certain extinction, such as the Critically Endangered Redonda tree lizard, which currently finds itself living on an island almost devoid of trees.” Redonda from the air. The island currently has a population of over 5,000 invasive black rats that prey on the island’s native species. The rugged island is also home to around 60 long-horned goats that humans brought to Redonda more than a century ago. 							<![CDATA[The Antiguan racer (Alsophis antiguae) shares a similar story with many highly endangered island species. Invasive mongoose killed every racer on the Caribbean island of Antigua, leaving only a small population on nearby Great Bird Island. Confined to 8 hectares, this final population was being killed-off by invasive Eurasian black rats. By the time conservationists took action, only 50 Antiguan racers survived in the world. But here&#8217;s where the story turns out different: 15 years later, a partnership between six conservation groups has succeeded in raising the population tenfold to 500 snakes and expanded its territory to other islands through snake-reintroductions. &#8220;I am proud we proved the pessimists wrong, and turned the fortunes of this unique and endearing animal. Many people have contributed over the years, but special credit must go to the local volunteers,&#8221; said Dr. Jenny Daltry, Senior Conservation Biologist with Fauna and Flora International (FFI). The Antiguan Racer Conservation Project began by eradicating rats from Great Bird Island as well as 12 other offshore islands, which since 2006 have been included in a marine protected area, the North East Marine Management Area. Following eradication, the project carefully reintroduced the snake to other small islands, increasing the Antiguan racer&#8217;s habitat from 8 hectares to 63.
