Angana Chakrabarti
Angana Chakrabarti is an independent multimedia journalist based in Assam, India. In the past six years as a journalist, Angana has reported in the domains of politics, policy, health and environment. She started her career as a trainee journalist at CNN-News18, a digital newsroom based in Delhi. During her stint there, she and her colleagues investigated and reported on Delhi’s water crisis, which ignited her passion for environmental reporting.
Subsequently, she worked at another Delhi-based media organization, ThePrint, where she was tasked with tracking the impact of COVID-19. She traveled extensively across the country including the Northeastern states of Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. The Northeast, with its complex sociocultural and ecological landscape, left a lasting impression. So, in 2021, she took charge as ThePrint’s special correspondent for the Northeast. In that year, she reported on the landslide in Manipur’s Tupul area and the floods in Assam. She also won the Mumbai Press Club’s RedInk Award for her report on the vandalism of mosques in Tripura in 2022.
In the past year, as an independent journalist, Angana has delved deeper into other sociopolitical issues affecting the Northeast region, primarily the ethnic violence in Manipur. Through her reportage, she showed how the state government was partly culpable in the violence. Recently, she was also chosen for the University of Essex and The Guardian Foundation’s Media Fellowship and is currently working on a podcast. Angana is now committed to using multimedia to report on the fragile ecologies of the Northeast region and the current challenges it faces.
