Death rate on China's roads is highest in the world
July 7, 2005
Car consumption in China has boomed in the past couple of years. After soaring 56% in 2002, demand for cars in China jumped to 75% in before slowing in 2004 to around 15%. This growth in the number of drivers on China's expanding network of roads has not come without a significant cost; China's roadways are some of the most dangerous on the planet.
According to the latest figures from the World Health Organisation, 680 people die and 45,000 are injured every day in motor vehicle accidents. For comparison, in the United States where there are more than 600 cars for every thousand Americans (versus 7 or 8 out of every 1,000 in China), daily deaths are around 115.
