High in the Amazon canopy, oropendolas build some of the rainforest’s most incredible architecture: huge hanging pouch nests woven from fibers, vines and leaves. Hundreds of these nests form entire “tree cities” suspended 30 meters above the ground. But the design isn’t just impressive — it’s strategic. Toucans constantly try to raid the nests, so males defend the colony, build decoy nests, and even place their entire city beside deadly wasp nests for protection.
