							<![CDATA[POTIGUAR BASIN, Brazil — On the estuary beaches where the Atlantic Ocean mixes with freshwater rising from mangrove soils, the shorebird known as the red knot has a single goal: to feed. While one member of the flock keeps watch, the others use their specialized, tireless beaks to capture clams, oysters, snails and earthworms that inhabit the muddy soils. Soon the time to migrate will come, and the birds must double their weight to endure the long trip. Each May, after spending the previous eight months in the coastal wetlands of Brazil’s shoreline and in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego, at the far south of South America, red knots (Calidris canutus) begin a long return flight to the Northern Hemisphere. Their final destination is the cold, desert-like Arctic tundra. It’s there, during the northern summer, between June and August, that they breed. Even before the journey starts, on the beaches of Macau, Guamaré and Galinhos — coastal municipalities dotted throughout Brazil’s Potiguar Basin — observers can see a sign of their preparation: the birds’ chests display a reddish color typical of nuptial plumage. Among migratory birds, the red knot is one of the longest-distance travelers. It flies for about six days and six nights without sleeping, eating or drinking. 							<![CDATA[COBH, Ireland — On a bright, warm day in April in Cobh, Ireland, I step down a centuries-old cobbled slipway that descends into a harbor packed with fishing boats. Halfway down, something interrupts the weathered wall: an installation of 60 hexagonal concrete panels bolted into the stone. Some panels are ridged or textured; others are pitted with holes and crevices that either trap water or let it filter through with the changing tide. Bright green algae drapes across many of the panels. When I look closer, I notice a few marine snails, including periwinkles (Littorina littorea) and dog whelks (Nucella lapillus), stuck to the tiles. These panels were installed at Kennedy Pier in Cobh, a seaport town in Ireland’s County Cork, in September 2025, as part of the Living Seawalls project. Spearheaded by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and the company Reef Design Lab, both in Australia, the Living Seawalls project aims to create biodiversity-friendly panels, boulders and pilings that can be installed on seawalls, marinas, piers and other hard coastal infrastructure to make them more hospitable to marine wildlife. 							<![CDATA[Every morning, before the sun has fully risen over the tidal flats of Satkhira in southwest Bangladesh, women begin walking. They walk two kilometers, sometimes five (about 1.2 to 3.1 miles) and sometimes more, carrying empty vessels that they will fill with water fit for drinking. Then they walk back. Then, some days, they walk again. A UNDP study found that women in coastal Bangladesh spend up to six hours a day on this task alone, six hours that cannot be spent earning, learning or caring for their children, and this is not even a drought zone. This is one of the largest deltas on Earth. The women walk past rivers, channels and flooded fields. The water is everywhere, and none of it is safe. Approximately 20 million people along Bangladesh’s coast cannot safely drink the water that surrounds them. Yet, a UNDP survey found that 73% of residents in five coastal sub-districts of Satkhira consume saline water every single day. The crisis does not make the front pages of international newspapers the way droughts in East Africa or floods in Pakistan tend to. It is slow, structural and unglamorous, which is precisely why it has been allowed to continue for this long. Published by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), Urban Forests and Green Spaces in Africa: Case Studies and Lessons from Across the Continent brings together 34 case studies from 14 African countries, covering everything from restoring biodiversity around wetlands in Rwanda’s capital Kigali, creating Miyawaki forests (forests with native trees planted closely together) in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, greening heat-stressed neighborhoods in Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, transplanting baobabs in Senegal to rehabilitating degraded urban land in South Africa. Hot days, hot nights, and heatwaves have become more frequent across Africa, concludes the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s most authoritative scientific assessment on climate change. The report also finds that coastal cities are vulnerable to floods related to rainfall events and sea level rise. The study, published April 14 in the journal Nature Water, found that more than 10% of monitored locations showed a significant years-long decline in groundwater levels, indicating a susceptibility to saltwater intrusion, which can render water unusable. 							<![CDATA[“I would like for me and my children to live here forever,” said Lâm Thu Sang, a resident of Vietnam’s Cần Thơ, a city of more than 2 million people located near the mouth of the Mekong River on one of the world’s largest river deltas. But that may not be possible. In the past, about 160 million metric tons of sediment was annually funneled down the 4,300-kilometer (nearly 2,700-mile) Mekong River to form and nourish the vast delta where the river meets the sea. By 2024, that deposition rate had fallen by 70% per year — starving the delta of much of its source material. The Mekong flows through six Asian nations, draining a roughly 800,000-square-kilometer (309,000-square-mile) basin, until finally releasing its combined sediments into the 40,000-km2 (15,400-mi2) Mekong Delta — a complex ecological system of low-lying fertile lands and a web of waterways the size of the Netherlands, stretching from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to the South China Sea in Vietnam. 							<![CDATA[Vinh Long, VIETNAM — Khanh Chi tends a small apricot blossom orchard in Nhuan Phu Tan, a commune in southern Vietnam’s Vinh Long province by the Co Chien River, one of the Mekong River’s final distributaries before reaching the ocean. Her orchard is 55 kilometers (34 miles) inland. According to the provincial hydrometeorological observatory, Chi’s commune is the furthest point along the Co Chien River where, this year, salinity levels hit 4 parts per thousand (ppt) — the threshold at which rice farming is damaged. As saltwater pushes deeper and less predictably into the delta in recent decades, Vietnam has responded with canals, dikes and sluice gates to keep it out. For farmers, such projects offer the most explicit and immediate relief. Scientists say that might be a problem. Instead of engineering its way out of the salinity crisis, scientists argue, the region must adapt to it. “I buy freshwater, bring it back by truck, and just spray it like a mist,” Chi says, describing how she waters the apricot during dry season, when the river is saline. The man is José Rangel Edison, 57, a fisher from the community of Cuauhtémoc, an Indigenous Ikoots community of 900 people in the municipality of San Mateo del Mar, on Mexico’s Pacific coast. “In the past, the sea used to be over there,” Edison says, pointing to the horizon across the cresting waves. “But since I was 18, when I started fishing, it’s been coming in little by little. Now it has almost wiped out Cuauhtémoc.” Edison’s community is perched on a slim stretch of land between the ocean and a large lagoon system. The study, published Dec. 15 in the journal Communications Earth &amp; Environment, found that sea levels across the continent have risen four times faster since 2010, on average, than they had in the 1990s. The primary reason was additional water mass from polar melt, rather than other phenomena that can cause sea-level rise, the authors found. “When you have ice-free summer [at high latitudes], it means that the water went somewhere,” Franck Ghomsi, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba in Canada and lead author of the study, told Mongabay. “The glacier moved from ice to water, and it [water] started migrating. And it is the tropics [that] are now … getting this outflow of water.” The impacts include flooding, erosion of coastal land, displacement of coastal communities and intrusion of salty seawater into freshwater drinking sources. Logs carried from upstream forests poured out of river mouths and spread along the coast here in Padang, the capital of Indonesia&#8217;s West Sumatra province, blocking access to the sea and cutting off the livelihoods of hundreds of fishers. The mass of floating wood has made it impossible for fishers to pass, with some intact logs measuring up to 90 centimeters (35 inches or nearly 3 feet) in diameter. “For the past two days, the logs have been piling up. Powerful waves pummeled Belgium’s shoreline, eroding some parts. Jagged, cliff-like formations appeared on certain beaches. Eventually, contractors reshaped the sand to prevent further erosion and to keep the public safe. Yet some stretches of the Belgian coast fared far better. Among these was a 750-meter (2,460-foot) strip of beach in Raversijde, a neighborhood in the coastal city of Ostend, where a series of constructed dunes stand seaward of a promenade that doubles as a dike. I drove to Raversijde on a rainy afternoon in late November to visit these dunes, which are part of a “dune-by-dike” system. The dunes and dike are meant to work in tandem to create a double buffer between the sea and the coastline: The dunes form a soft barrier that dissipates wave energy, while the preexisting dikes play back-up as a hard barrier, should the dunes succumb to a storm. The fisherman has been out on the waters of the Wouri Estuary for hours, and all he’s brought back to show for his effort is a tiny catfish. “It’s so frustrating,” he says, putting away the empty net. “A few years back, you didn’t need to go far to have a good harvest. Everything has changed.” The coastal landscape here has changed, and with it the fishing fortunes of resident communities. Experts point to retreating mangrove forests as one of the reasons for the troubles Ekam and other fishers here are facing. The Cameroon Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration and Resilience (CAMERR) project, launched in November 2022 by a group of international NGOs in partnership with the Cameroonian government and local organizations, is one of the largest mangrove restoration projects in the country. It aims to restore 1,000 hectares (nearly 2,500 acres) of mangroves over 30 years. The focus of the initiative is the estuary of the Wouri River, with the city of Douala on its southeastern shore. The Watershed Task Group (WTG), a local nonprofit leading the effort, says it has restored more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of mangroves in the Cameroon and Ntem river estuaries. Due to climate change, the global ocean has already risen by 21-24 centimeters (about 8-9.5 inches) since 1880, and the rate is accelerating, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A new climate idea aims to slow this rise by moving seawater to reflood inland depressions. The main causes of sea level rise are ice packs melting and the volume of water in the ocean expanding as Earth’s temperature increases due to human-caused climate change. Depending on the ferocity with which we cut greenhouse gas emissions, predictions of future sea level rise vary widely. According to NOAA, if we cap the global temperature rise at just 1.5° Celsius (2.7° Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels — nearly impossible at this point — the sea level would rise an additional 30 cm (12 in) by 2100. If emissions remain at the very high end of estimates, sea levels could rise by 200 cm (6.6 feet) by the end of the century, flooding many of the world’s coastlines and affecting tens of millions of people. There are even worse scenarios: if we lose much of Greenland’s ice sheet or the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica — dubbed the Doomsday Glacier — the resultant rise in water level could affect billions. In the central Philippines, island barangays — administrative units akin to villages — in Tubigon town might soon be submerged due to land subsidence, brought by a major earthquake in 2013. Meanwhile, Hagonoy town, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Manila, has been suffering from persistent floodwaters due to land subsidence from excessive groundwater extraction, among other factors. Globally, around 40% of the population lives in coastal areas, according to the U.N. More than 850 million people live in low elevated coastal zones (LECZs) less than 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level, including more than 150 million living less than 5 m (16 ft) above sea level — mostly located in East and Southeast Asia, the U.N. Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) reported. As sea levels continue to rise while some lands sink, coastal and island communities alike are left to adapt and live with the floodwaters. Now, as greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, some polar researchers are investigating a radical geoengineering plan to install seabed curtains that could protect Thwaites from melting down. Thwaites Glacier is rapidly shedding ice as the world warms from climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels. Thwaites is losing about 50 billion metric tons of ice every year, contributing to about 4% of present-day sea-level rise worldwide. But if Thwaites were to melt down entirely, it could raise the average global sea level by more than 0.6 meters (2 feet) over the next few centuries. This would inundate coastal cities around the world and force hundreds of millions of people to migrate. Some scientists think it could be even worse. Thwaites may act as a natural dam for the rest of ice contained within West Antarctica. The president on Aug. 25 officiated the formation of the North Java Coast Management Authority to oversee the construction of a 700-kilometer (435-mile) seawall from Banten to Gresik, aimed at protecting 20 million coastal residents from erosion, tidal flooding and land subsidence. The $80 billion project will cover planning, financing and construction, with officials hoping to attract investors while addressing environmental and social impacts. Prabowo appointed retired Vice Admiral Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, who’s currently the vice fisheries minister, to lead the new government agency, with Darwin Djajawinata and Suhajar Diantoro serving as vice chairs. The agency will oversee planning, financing and construction of the seawall, addressing environmental and social considerations, and its head can adjust plans as needed. “Why two vice chairs? Because managing the North Coast (Pantura) will inevitably involve investment. One vice chair was appointed from Danantara. 							<![CDATA[Indonesia’s marine ministry has approved one of Java’s largest coal plants to use vast amounts of seawater for cooling, prompting concerns from marine experts over the impact of heated discharge on coastal ecosystems and fisheries. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries on July 22 issued a permit for the utilization of seawater for non-energy purposes (ALSE) to PT Bhimasena Power Indonesia (BPI), the operator of the Batang coal-fired power plant in Central Java. The permit makes the Batang facility the first power plant in Java and the second in Indonesia to be legally authorized to manage seawater for industrial activities, the ministry said in a statement. The ministry said the Batang plant utilized approximately 3 billion cubic meters (106 billion cubic feet) of seawater annually, primarily for cooling purposes, and such large-scale seawater use requires accountable management in accordance with government regulations. The ALSE permit regulates the use of seawater for non-energy industrial purposes, such as cooling, potable water production or other uses, according to the ministry. “This effort also supports transparency and accountability in sustainable marine industries,” Frista Yorhanita, the ministry’s director of marine resources, said in the statement. The study uses a first-of-its-kind, open-source risk index tool to predict risk for mangroves, according to warming estimates for three different scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions (intermediate, high, and very high) projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2021. “Almost all regions will see a non-negligible increase in risk,” study lead researcher Sarah Hülsen, from ETH Zürich’s Institute for Environmental Decisions, told Mongabay. But Southeast Asia is likely to be worst affected, with more tropical cyclones and higher wind speeds than at present, according to the study. “Even at the lowest emission pathway [scenario] … Central America, Southeast Africa, East Asia, and Oceania, will become newly affected by very high intensity tropical cyclone winds,” the study says. The tool predicts that the eastern Philippines may experience 254% more tropical cyclones than the historical maximum, regardless of the emissions scenario. Cracked riverbanks crumble into brackish water, where mangrove saplings now sprout in orderly rows. Their pale green leaves flutter under the weight of the sun, as if unsure whether they belong in this parched, toxic place. Here, in one of Iraq’s most ecologically stressed regions, an unlikely green force is beginning to take root: mangroves (Avicennia marina). These hardy, salt-tolerant trees are being planted across tidal flats and riverbanks in a bold effort to slow coastal erosion, filter pollutants, and fight climate change. But the stakes stretch far beyond Basra’s shoreline: the health of Iraq’s southern marshlands, including the fragile Mesopotamian Marshes, may depend on the survival of these coastal trees. “This project is about defending a disappearing ecosystem,” says Ayman Abdul Latif Al-Rubaye, head of the mangrove planting unit at the University of Basrah’s Marine Science Centre. “Mangroves are our frontline against salinity, pollution and coastal collapse.” Covering 400 hectares (990 acres), the mangrove nursery in Khor Al-Zubair includes acclimation basins, seed pools, and a dedicated management facility. The sun slips behind the hills of the mainland, and night falls on a crowd that flashes with scarlet body paint and the vivid colours of the traditional dress made of mola, a hand-made textile worn by the Indigenous Guna woman. As one of the 2,500 inhabitants of the island of Uggubseni, located in the Guna Yala provincial-level Indigenous region, or comarca, of Panama, Goporas has been raised on stories of the past. The island has spent the month of February participating in region-wide celebrations to mark the centenary of the Guna Revolution. During the bloody 1925 revolt, the Indigenous Guna expelled repressive Panamanian authorities and established their autonomy in the region. Today, Guna Yala remains an autonomous comarca with its own laws, though the Panamanian state retains its obligation to protect and support the region. A representative body, the Guna General Congress, controls access to Guna Yala, manages engagement with the Panamanian government, and prohibits most commercial activity by external businesses in the region. Whenever he talks about “home,” he remembers his days in the delta of Keti Bandar, 145 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of where he now lives. “We used to go fishing every day when I was a teenager 22 years ago,” Dablo, a member of the traditional fisherfolk community, remembers. But for Indigenous fisherfolk like Dablo from Sindh province, who traditionally live near inland lakes and small creeks, rising sea levels are eroding their homes and livelihoods, forcing them to relocate to higher ground — only to find that climate-induced sea level rise threatens them there as well. “For the last two decades, the sea started rising to our homes, the fish became harder to catch and freshwater was nowhere to be found,” said Dablo, who packed his clothes, kitchen utensils and other belongings and moved to Karachi with his family in 2017. And according to some estimates, it could create anywhere between 200 million and 1.2 billion climate refugees by 2050. As people flee floods, failed harvests, dried rivers or destroyed homes, what becomes of the ecosystems they leave behind? Of the wildlife, trees and endemic species? In the southwestern Pacific, people are bringing much of this biodiversity along with them. The residents of the Carteret Islands in Papua New Guinea are responding to climate threats by moving not only themselves to safer ground — but also the plants and trees that sustain their way of life. In their move, they have transplanted hundreds of specimens, representing dozens of species, across a small stretch of ocean. “We’re not just leaving. We’re trying to bring a part of our islands with us,” says Maria Kamin, who left the Carteret Islands to relocate with other families in response to rising sea levels. They’ve moved to Bougainville, another island part of the country. In their new home, this vegetation, combined with local flora, have helped establish a thriving forest of 175,000 trees and plants. During this “green migration,” residents tell Mongabay they hope to preserve not only the biodiversity of their native islands as conditions worsen, but also their culture and sense of place. He is hopeful for a good yield, he says. Sirajul, from Satkhira’s Shyamnagar upazila, resumed rice cultivation two years ago, after having stopped it for two decades. During these two decades, he commercially farmed shrimp in a marine water enclosure — locally called gher — which initially seemed profitable. However, after gradually facing a loss from aquaculture, the 53-year-old, whose family have been rice farmers professionally for generations, switched back to agriculture. He tells Mongabay that the shrimp production dwindled due to viral outbreaks, while excessive soil salinity barred him from cultivating other crops around the shrimp enclosure. Like Sirajul, many smallholder farmers in Bangladesh’s coastal districts, especially in the southwest, like Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat, are turning back to agriculture as an adaptation strategy to combat climate change impacts due to rising sea-level and temperatures. Instead of a monoculture of shrimp, they now cultivate aman rice during the peak monsoon season, and different fruits like watermelon, oil seeds like sunflower and mustard, maize, various vegetables, boro rice, and other crops during the dry season, optimizing the alluvial lands around the year. “Now, I cultivate rice during the monsoon season and vegetables or fruits in the dry season on the same land that was exposed to high salinity earlier,” Sirajul says. In this transition zone that’s subject to tides, the plants have adapted by developing their own structures to breathe underwater and better cling to the muddy soil by using prop roots. Mangrove forests can be found along almost the entire Brazilian coast. Considered nurseries for marine life, species that eventually migrate out to sea, mangroves are key to the fishing supply chain, both small-scale and industrial. Just like any other ecosystem, mangroves provide natural services that people benefit, from such as carbon sequestration — up to 15 times more than forests on a hectare-for-hectare basis — and protection against the impact of sea waves, which can cause erosion in places where the native vegetation has been stripped away. However, these biodiverse areas are increasingly threatened by urbanization, invasive exotic species, sewage disposal, fires, and climate change. Due to the inevitable rise in sea levels and the increase in the frequency and intensity of storms, coastal cities need investments and adaptation measures focused on reducing risks and minimizing the impacts caused by extreme weather events. According to projections by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sea levels are expected to rise by 20 centimeters (8 inches) by 2050 if the increase in the global average temperature remains below 2° Celsius (3.6° Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels. It’s the land of her ancestors where she feels deeply rooted. The sprawling array of remote atolls and islands that make up the Marshall Islands holds an immensely rich biodiversity and coral reefs intricately tied to their culture and identity. The atolls were also once a testing ground for nuclear warfare. Displaced once because of nuclear testing in the 20th century, some communities are now at risk of evacuation and seeing their lands disappear if sea-level rise continues at its current rate. In one of the world’s lowest-lying island nations, researchers say communities will face threats to livability over the next 70 years with just a 50 -centimeter (20-inch) sea-level rise. Some projections say this will happen by 2090. In the government’s national adaptation plan to address the issue, almost half of people surveyed said they already observed waters rising. These events, just three days apart, built on damage suffered during another storm during the December 2023 holidays and another during the previous December. “Extensive” is the word that Peter Slovinsky, a marine geologist for the Maine Geological Survey, chose to describe the most recent damage during an interview with Mongabay. He pointed to an estimate that 60% of Maine’s working waterfronts were severely damaged. “We saw numerous seawall failures and erosion of anywhere between 15 to even up to 30 feet [4.5-9 meters] of coastal sand dunes, and massive bluff failures also,” Slovinsky said. The common response to busted docks, condemned houses, shrinking shorelines, disappearing dunes and faltering bluffs has been to bolster the shore with &#8216;hard&#8217; infrastructure like concrete jetties and breakwaters of imported boulders. But those interventions are expensive, carbon-intensive, and ultimately ineffective due to continual sea level rise. It’s been a year since his last fishing expedition — the one that almost took his life. On Feb. 19, 2023, Dhasan and his nine-member crew were on board their motorized boat, the Ruby, 450 nautical miles (830 kilometers) off the mainland, when a Hong Kong-flagged container ship reportedly rammed into their vessel, tossing the crew, like flies, into the cold, blue waters. “It felt like a big explosion,” Dhasan recalls. “I thought this is our end.” The boat began capsizing while the crew floated in the water, screaming for help. Dhasan, the captain of the boat, says he froze up and just hoped for what he calls “help from the heavens.” “It’s God’s grace that we all survived,” he says. “If neighboring boats had not come to our rescue, we would have become food for the sharks.” Two local boats towed the wreck home. Since the incident, Dhasan and his crew have been out of work while the remains of the Ruby lie in a corner of the harbor that mostly houses scrapped boats. Dhasan is claiming damages of more than $10 million, including the boat, gear and lost fish catch. As the OOC took place, news broke about the world’s coral reefs undergoing a mass bleaching event, which lent a sense of urgency to the conference. Experts say this global bleaching event is a result of the current El Niño climate pattern as well as the ongoing rise in global ocean temperatures due to human-induced climate change. “Devastating but also predictable,” is how Melissa Wright, a senior member of the environment team at Bloomberg Philanthropies, which funds ocean conservation work, described the bleaching event at the conference’s opening press briefing. She urged leaders to take “decisive action” on climate change as well as other threats such as overfishing, pollution and development. Residents say the government has failed to integrate traditional and local knowledge in the relocation and site development plans. President Laurentino Cortizo told residents of the Indigenous Guna that the new site would be completed by Sept. 25, 2023. But no one has been given keys yet and the site has no basic services, such as water or sewage disposal. According to Erica Bower, a climate displacement researcher at Human Rights Watch, the Panamanian Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (MIVOT) told HRW that the houses would be ready on April 4, but that deadline was not met. He darted into the shore break to pick up a bone before it was snatched by the tide here in Indonesia’s Maluku province. “There are probably around 20 graves that have been damaged,” Samadin, a caretaker at the Tutuni public cemetery, told Mongabay Indonesia. “Some are also missing.” Like many seaside communities in the world’s largest archipelagic country, Haya village faces an uncertain future owing to erosion of its coastline. In Haya, the combined forces of currents, tide, wind and impact from storm surges have pushed back the coastline here by about 20 meters (66 feet). A study published in the journal Scientific Reports in 2018 found that approximately 28,000 square kilometers (11,000 square miles) of land had been eroded by coastal abrasion globally, an area 10 times the size of Hong Kong. Further research in the same journal in 2020 projected that losses from extreme coastal flooding would soon accelerate, and that sea level rises would “radically redefine the coastline of the 21st century.” However, residents of Haya village worry that the gradual forces causing their coastline to crumble have been stimulated by new demand for sand. The middle-aged boat pilot calculates how long it will take for the tide from the Atlantic Ocean to reach the riverbed, increasing the water level and allowing him to navigate to a nearby community with his boat. &#8220;It seems that nature is revolting, angry with us,” Marques told Mongabay. “I&#8217;ve been reading nature since I was a child, but I am no longer able to decipher it.” Climate change, coupled with man-made actions in the Bailique Archipelago, a group of islands at the mouth of the Amazon River in the Brazilian Amazon, has changed the water cycle and made life increasingly arduous over the past four years. Natural phenomena are becoming more aggressive and unpredictable, and Bailique’s residents, struggling to adapt to a new environment, are living now what people from other parts of the world will likely face in the future. To the south of the archipelago, buffalo ranches and hydroelectric dams far away from the islands gradually diverted the course of creeks and tributaries to the Amazon River. An enhanced river current is accelerating house-engulfing landslides on its riverbanks. It is also affecting the north, where the Amazon River and its tributaries are becoming weaker, silting up in part by the land being washed and dragged away from the south and leaving residents sometimes stranded.
