Owing to human-driven climate change, the ice is disappearing at an alarming pace. According to data compiled by NASA and the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), a research organization based at the University of Colorado Boulder, the extent of Arctic sea ice cover has decreased by more than 12% per decade since satellite records began. Scientists even predict that the region could experience its first near-ice-free summer as early as the 2030s. The loss of sea ice threatens coastal communities in many ways, jeopardizing traditional livelihoods while accelerating coastal erosion and amplifying the impacts of sea level rise. To slow the melting of Arctic ice, researchers have proposed a number of innovative but controversial solutions, including spreading glass beads across the ice to bounce sunlight back into space, and spraying sea-salt aerosols into low-lying clouds to increase their reflectivity to slow down heating effects. In 2017, astrophysicist Steven Desch also proposed what was then considered a wild idea: Using millions of wind-powered pumps to draw seawater onto the surface of the ice during winter, allowing it to freeze and thicken the ice sheet. The technology was developed by the nonprofit Polar Bears International in collaboration with U.S.-based security firm Spotter Global in a bid to mitigate encounters between the animals and people. “We wanted to add another tool to the polar bear safety toolbox,” Alysa McCall, director of science at Polar Bears International, told Mongabay in a video interview. “With an early-warning detection system, there’s less chance of a bear getting killed because it surprised somebody.” Climate change is the biggest threat to the survival and existence of polar bears (Ursus maritimus). As sea ice melts in the Arctic, these threatened species are rapidly losing their habitats. As a result, they move on to land in search of food, where they risk coming into close contact with humans. With Bear-dar, scientists and conservationists say they hope to help manage such encounters and conflicts. The early-warning system uses radars and cameras that keep a watch on the landscape, looking out for motion in its field of vision. The radar panels, each about the size of an iPad, look at a distance ranging from a few hundred meters to 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles). For the first time, scientists have used satellite data to discover new locations in Antarctica where the birds go to shed and replace their feathers every year, an event known as molting. However, they also found that these molting sites might have melted from under the penguins, potentially causing fatalities. Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri), native to Antarctica, are the biggest of the penguin species. Since they heavily rely on sea ice for their survival, global warming is one of the major threats to their existence. A 2021 study estimated that the birds could lose 98% of their colonies and become “quasi-extinct” by the end of the century if sea ice continues to decline at projected rates. Every year, around late January, emperor penguins move to stable sea ice attached to a coastline to molt. It&#8217;s a life stage that scientists dub &#8220;catastrophic molting” because, unlike other animals, penguins shed all their feathers at once. Molting, however, is a vulnerable life stage. For one, the process of shedding and growing new plumage consumes a lot of energy. 							<![CDATA[International shipping is on the rise in the Arctic region now that climate change regularly opens up transpolar sea routes in summer. That surge in traffic is leading to higher emissions of black carbon — colloquially known as soot, considered a “super pollutant.” Those emissions are escalating climate change and quickening sea ice and snow loss across the Arctic, which is already Earth’s most rapidly warming region. At a recent meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), member states (led by Denmark, and including France, Germany and the Solomon Islands), proposed new regulations to require ships sailing in the Arctic to use fuels that emit low amounts of black carbon. But in February, global petrostates, including Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States, opposed this effort, meant to slow Arctic warming. This delay follows a 2025 postponement of an IMO plan that had been widely expected to succeed, which would have accelerated the decarbonization of global shipping. That plan was blocked by the U.S. along with other oil-producing nations. The just-nixed Arctic proposal would have required ships sailing in the Far North to stop burning residual fuels — responsible for high black carbon emissions — and instead move to less polluting fuels. The update, released Oct. 10 during the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, &#8220;uplists&#8221; the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) from vulnerable to the higher-threat category of endangered, and the bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus) and harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) from least concern to near threatened. Arctic seals depend on stable sea ice to breed, raise their pups, rest and access feeding areas. As temperatures climb globally, they are rising about four times faster in the Arctic than elsewhere and sea ice is thinning and melting earlier every year. This loss has undermined reproduction across multiple species. “The major driver of the declines that we are seeing is breeding habitat deterioration as a direct result of climate change,” Kit Kovacs, co-chair of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission Pinniped Specialist Group, told Mongabay. Kovacs participated in the uplisting decision. Now, as greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, some polar researchers are investigating a radical geoengineering plan to install seabed curtains that could protect Thwaites from melting down. Thwaites Glacier is rapidly shedding ice as the world warms from climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels. Thwaites is losing about 50 billion metric tons of ice every year, contributing to about 4% of present-day sea-level rise worldwide. But if Thwaites were to melt down entirely, it could raise the average global sea level by more than 0.6 meters (2 feet) over the next few centuries. This would inundate coastal cities around the world and force hundreds of millions of people to migrate. Some scientists think it could be even worse. 							<![CDATA[Sea ice floating atop the Arctic Ocean reached its minimum extent for 2025 on Sept. 10, covering 4.602 million square kilometers (1.78 million square miles) concluding this year’s summer melt-out. That’s far from a record low and represents a recovery, in some ways, from where things stood earlier this year. At the winter maximum in March 2025, the Arctic ice was in bad shape. That’s the month in which sea ice, encouraged by freezing temperatures and 24-7 darkness, annually reaches its greatest extent. Ice cover in the region then barely topped 14.3 million square kilometers (5.5 million square miles) — the smallest extent at the winter maximum observed in the 47-year satellite record, and more than 1 million km2 (386,000 mi2) below the 1981 to 2010 average winter maximum. With less sea ice to reflect solar radiation, and more open ocean to absorb and store heat, the polar cooling system that helps protect the planet from higher temperatures will increasingly become dysfunctional. In a recent landmark report, marking the World Day for Glaciers, UNESCO is ringing alarm bells: Cryosphere melt is putting freshwater accessibility at risk for more than one billion people living in mountainous regions and a further two billion living downstream as glaciers and snowpacks melt away and decline; most of those individuals live in developing countries. That same report finds that cryosphere melt is endangering two-thirds of irrigated agriculture across the globe. “The melting and the changes in the cryosphere are a reality and we need to really start taking action,” Abou Amani, director of the Division of Water Sciences and secretary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, tells Mongabay in an interview. That’s a stark warning, but only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to gauging the cryosphere’s importance to human wellbeing and evaluating potential harms as it shrinks away. Scientists say this rapid warming is reshaping the region&#8217;s environmental and human systems. &#8220;It&#8217;s not particularly surprising, although it&#8217;s still really sobering,&#8221; Twila Moon, deputy lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder and an editor of this year&#8217;s report, told Mongabay. The Arctic is Earth&#8217;s northernmost region, centered around the Arctic Ocean and surrounded by the lands of North America, Europe and Asia. The treeless tundra that rings the Arctic Ocean covers an area nearly twice the size of Alaska. This region has historically served as Earth&#8217;s freezer. Its permanently frozen ground, called permafrost, stores more than half of all the carbon stored in the Earth’s soil, which has accumulated over thousands of years. This map shows the Arctic&#8217;s average carbon balance from 2002-2020. Land areas colored purple were a source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The darkest purple clusters show areas where there were large releases due to wildfires. But the whales’ presence raises conservation concerns that may be difficult to address, the team reported recently in Global Change Biology. Thick ice sheets posed a natural barrier, breaking their dorsal fin if they pushed too hard into it. But as the northern polar regions warm up faster than anywhere else on Earth, the ice melts, letting in more of the voracious predators. The researchers, led by evolutionary geneticist Colin Garroway of the University of Manitoba, were curious about the Arctic’s growing population of killer whales and their impacts. This drop is almost one million km2 (roughly 400,000 mi2) less than the typical mid- September mean of about 18.5 million km2 (about 7.1 million mi2). But scientists say it may still be too soon to declare the winter sea ice annual maximum extent. Rapid midsummer melt is therefore both unremarkable and unsurprising. But it is also an unreliable indicator of just how much ice will cover the Arctic Ocean when the September annual sea ice minimum arrives. Now a combination of satellite and on-the-ice observations are helping scientists better understand summer sea ice behavior and track the evolution of melt ponds atop the ice, so as to more accurately forecast what extent will remain frozen at the September minimum. In separate research, scientists have recently demonstrated how to see details on sea ice, combining high- and low-resolution satellite images to get a clearer picture of melt ponds and thereby test how well climate models are capturing melt pond evolution. Uncovering melt ponds with satellites Ice and snow reflect sunlight, keeping the Arctic cool, while large dark areas of open ocean absorb abundant solar energy, which triggers more ice melt and delays the autumn refreeze. Melt ponds sitting atop the sea ice absorb more energy than fresh snow, but less than open water. 							<![CDATA[For a few days each June, the saltwater wind that blows over the fairgrounds in Utqiagvik, Alaska mixes with the smell of coffee, salmonberry pie and fresh whale meat. The festivities start early and end under the midnight sun during Nalukataq, the annual whaling festival. By noon, the tables at the center of the fairgrounds are filled with slabs of whale blubber, cauldrons of stew and baked goods — enough to feed the town for a month. After a prayer, crew members circle the fairgrounds and fill coolers with food. Meanwhile, captains trade turns making speeches, pumping up the crowd and singing songs into a megaphone. On the first day of last summer’s festival, one cut of whale meat was conspicuously absent from the spread. The kidneys of a bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), which are usually slow cooked through the morning, were sitting in wildlife veterinarian Raphaela Stimmelmayr’s laboratory eight kilometers (five miles) away at the North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management. Stimmelmayr received the organs back in March, just hours after the Little Kupaaq whaling crew successfully harpooned a 25-ton animal. Little Kupaaq member Martin Edwardsen was in the boat that day. And flooding: On April 15, Dubai got more rain in 24 hours than it averages all year; a recent study linked this to climate change. Three days later, record flooding hit Kenya, killing more than 180 people and displacing 165,000. Then Brazil in May, with 150 dead and more than 600,000 people displaced. And burning: Last year’s record fire season seems headed to a second sizzling year, with Canada announcing the fire season start in February, with a dozen major out-of-control blazes covering at least 200,000 hectares (500,000 acres) by mid-May. The Amazon, including Venezuela, has been aflame, and the U.S. West is bracing for another above-normal wildfire year. But the mood remains bittersweet for the delegation that must return to a region that has become a “sink” collecting plastic pollution that arrives from around the world. “Oil-producing countries and industries have wielded undue influence,” says Pamela Miller, executive director and senior scientist at Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) and co-chair of the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN). “We must ensure that the [next round of talks in November] is free of conflict of interest.” Though Indigenous delegates say there was significant progress in negotiations on a global treaty to curb plastics pollution by developing language to address harmful plastics chemicals, they were disappointed to see no commitments for cutting plastic production. They see high production and consumption of plastic as the root of the pollution problem. With the Arctic warming nearly four times faster than the rest of the world, communities in the Arctic are among the world’s most impacted by climate change and plastic pollution, according to a report published by ACAT and IPEN. Plastic pollution and the oil exploitation process to produce these petrochemicals are threatening Indigenous people&#8217;s health, food, livelihood, lands and human rights, say the authors. 							<![CDATA[Walruses have traversed the Arctic for millennia, gregarious pinnipeds that rest en masse on drifting pack ice, diving to feed on crabs, clams and other seafloor delicacies. Icy platforms also serve as safe birthing and nursery grounds. But as the far north rapidly warms and sea ice disappears, some herds now huddle on overcrowded shorelines, with deadly consequences for young calves: Because more disturbances occur on shore than at sea, calves are regularly trampled during panicked stampedes by the 1-ton-plus adults. Climate-driven changes are affecting other wildlife across this land of snow and ice. On the Arctic tundra, lemmings now struggle to eat, nest and move during the eight winter months they live beneath the snow, as they endure “weather whiplash,” with ever more severe fluctuations in temperature, snow and rain, says ecologist Dorothee Ehrich, at the Climate Ecological Observatory for Arctic Tundra with Norway’s Arctic University. As warming escalates, animals are on the move, bringing new diseases north. In December, officials reported that H5N1 avian flu infected and killed a polar bear — a global first. This highly infectious strain has circulated internationally since 2021, jumping between species, and has reached the polar region. It’s just one example of new pathogens there, raising serious concern because isolated Arctic species have little immunity to disease. But among the most intense pressures placed on the seas right now is humanity’s ongoing burning of fossil fuels, pumping dangerous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which in turn has pushed sea temperatures to record levels. The global ocean, which covers 70% of the planet’s surface, currently absorbs 90% of the solar heat trapped by humanity’s carbon emissions. This greatly moderates rising atmospheric temperatures and helps temper the intensity of the climate crisis. Put another way, the world would be a lot hotter by now if the ocean wasn’t taking in all this heat. But the ocean’s absorption of this anthropogenic heat still has serious consequences. One clear result has been an unprecedented rise in global sea temperatures, which has placed strains on marine life and biological processes, and increased extreme weather on land. Rising ocean temperatures are also resulting in an escalation in marine heat waves, placing even more pressure on marine organisms and ecosystems already struggling to cope with other changes brought on by fossil fuel burning, such as ocean acidification, along with other human stressors. Marine heat waves, defined as events where ocean temperatures rise to extreme levels and hold steady for at least five days, are becoming increasingly common as human-induced climate change fuels global warming. The ocean absorbs an enormous amount of human-made heat. The sixth assessment report of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that between 1971 and 2018, the sea took in about 396 zettajoules of heat, equivalent to the energy in about 25 billion Hiroshima atomic bombs. This heat absorption has resulted in a general warming of the global ocean. An analysis suggested that 2022 was the hottest year on record for the ocean. With the current El Niño climate pattern playing out this year, 2023 is predicted to be even hotter. While marine heat waves can impact any part of the ocean, certain areas have experienced more intense marine heat waves than others. For instance, one of the worst marine heat waves on record, known as “The Blob,” occurred in the northern Pacific Ocean between 2015 and 2016, which disrupted the entire food web across the region. More recently, the waters around the U.K. and Europe experienced temperatures as high as 5° Celsius (9° Fahrenheit) above normal, which is the warmest this region has experienced in 170 years. Instead, they ended up piloting a way to use existing undersea fiber-optic cables in the Arctic to track the extent of sea ice and monitor how it’s changing. “We were not at all expecting to be able to see sea ice changes clearly in the data,” Peña Castro, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New Mexico, told Mongabay in a video interview. In a study published in August in the journal The Seismic Record, Peña Castro and his colleagues described how they monitored changes in sea ice in the Beaufort Sea with the help of “ambient noise recorded by fiber-optic sensing technology deployed in an Arctic shallow marine seafloor environment.” While the findings were based on research at one location, they say the method could potentially be scaled up at other sites with existing fiber-optic cables. Studying how frozen seawater is changing is essential to measuring the impacts of global warming. Sea ice is usually monitored with the help of satellite imagery. However, the lack of high-resolution images often makes it difficult to gauge the reality in detail. 							<![CDATA[Emperor penguins in the Antarctic are suffering a “catastrophic” breeding failure as the region’s sea ice vanishes, pointing to a grim future for a species highly susceptible to the impacts of climate, a new study has found. Researchers used satellite imagery to find that chicks in four out of five emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea, an area along the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, didn’t survive to fledge in the Southern Hemisphere spring of 2022. This lack of fledgling success is directly attributed to sea ice loss, which is a consequence of human-induced climate change, according to the study published in Communications Earth &amp; Environment. Emperor penguin colonies require sea ice attached to solid land between April and January to breed, molt and forage successfully. Any changes to the sea ice can lead to penguin chicks missing the opportunity to develop the waterproof feathers necessary for survival. The researchers monitored the presence of emperor penguins between 2018 and 2022 at five colonies around the Bellingshausen Sea: on Rothschild Island, Verdi Inlet, Smyley Island, Bryan Coast, and Pfrogner Point. During the species’ breeding season in 2022, satellite imagery showed broken-up sea ice and no presence of penguins. This includes Antarctica — a region that has long seemed behind the curve when it comes to warming. But how radically or fast the south polar region’s atmosphere, oceans, ice and land will alter is hard to say. In January, data compiled by the World Meteorological Organization revealed the last eight years as the hottest on record globally. On the Antarctic Plateau, the coldest place on the planet, the Concordia Research station hit its highest temperature reading ever in early 2022 at -12.2 degrees Celsius (10.04 degrees Fahrenheit), while Antarctic sea ice shrank the same year to its smallest extent since recordkeeping began, to 1.92 million square kilometers (741,000 square miles). That’s an alarming record — but 2023 beat it, at 1.79 million km2 (691,000 mi2). This is potentially bad news for humanity: The White Continent, which holds 90% of the world’s ice, plays a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate. In an email to Mongabay, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) underlined the “disproportionate” influence the poles have on climate, stressing the contrast between the reflective properties of large white, ice-covered areas (which send the sun’s heat back into space) and the surrounding dark sea surface (which absorbs the sun’s heat, adding to global warming). 							<![CDATA[As Arctic sea ice reached a total winter maximum coverage that is again far below average, research has revealed how this ice is vulnerable to extreme weather arriving from more southerly parts of the globe — and how it might never recover. Arctic sea ice, which expands through the fall and winter, reached an annual maximum extent of 14.62 million square kilometers (5.64 million square miles) on March 6, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). That means Arctic sea ice is starting the summer melt season more than a million square kilometers below average. The maximum, which came almost a week earlier than normal, is the fifth-lowest in the 45-year satellite record. Antarctic sea ice extent has been in an even sorrier state, setting a record melt season low in February for the second year in a row, in what may be a sign that global warming will soon impact that polar system just as it&#8217;s been impacting Arctic sea ice. The combined sea ice extent around both poles hit a record low in January. While ice reflects most solar radiation, open water absorbs it, accelerating global warming in what is known as the ice-albedo feedback. As the Greenland ice sheet melts—2022 is the 26th year in a row that Greenland lost more ice than it gained—it’s sloughing off enormous volumes of sediment. That sediment could in turn be extracted to meet the voracious global appetite for sand. A recent study by researchers at McGill University and the University of Greenland, published in the journal Nature Sustainability, found that the vast majority of Greenlandic adults—eight out of ten surveyed—were in favor of extracting and exporting sand, if the projects doing so were under Greenlandic control. 							<![CDATA[In August, I traveled aboard the icebreaker Kinfish to the Svalbard archipelago, north of the Arctic Circle. Invited to the bridge as we cruised fjords near the 80th parallel, I was transfixed by towering blue glacier walls, but was confused by the map displayed on one of the ship’s screens. It showed our vessel sailing across a non-navigable frozen sheet. When I shared this story with Walt Meier, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, he didn’t seem surprised. “Things change fast there nowadays,” he said. So quickly, even polar ice mapping can’t keep pace. The 2022 spring/summer Arctic melt season, when the sun never sets and sea ice retreats, has now ended as the days quickly shorten, with the Far North heading back to full winter darkness. It wasn’t a record-breaking or news-making year for low ice extent — it ranked tenth­­, tying with 2017 and 2018 — but it has been yet another consequential melt season. A 2009 study estimated that the species has a biomass of between 300 million and 500 million metric tons, which is more than any other multicellular wild animal in the world. Not only are these teensy animals great in number, but they’re known to lock away large quantities of carbon through their feeding and excrement cycles. One study estimates that krill remove 23 million metric tons of carbon each year — about the amount of carbon produced by 35 million combustion-engine cars — while another suggests that krill take away 39 million metric tons each year. Krill are also a main food source for many animals for which Antarctica is famous: whales, seals, fish, penguins, and a range of other seabirds. But Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) are not “limitless,” as they were once described in the 1960s; they’re a finite resource under an increasing amount of pressure due to overfishing, pollution, and climate change impacts like the loss of sea ice and ocean acidification. 							<![CDATA[Arctic sea ice has reached its annual maximum at 14.88 million sq. km. (5.75 million sq. mi.), the 10th lowest winter extent since satellite monitoring began in 1979. The annual maximum was announced after temperatures at the North Pole shot up higher than normal by 28° Celsius (50° Fahrenheit) last week, close to the melting point, because of warm air delivered by a fast-developing “bomb cyclone” originating on the U.S. East Coast. Although ice extent is far from the worst scientists have seen, it is still 770,000 sq. km. smaller than the 1981-2010 average winter maximum and came on February 25, the second earliest date on record. Not only the quantity but also the quality of the ice is deteriorating remarkably fast, new research suggests. “We&#8217;re losing the older ice, the multiyear ice,” said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center. “There used to be stuff out there that was 10 to 12 years old. That&#8217;s gone. So there&#8217;s no secret here, you&#8217;re losing multiyear ice, you&#8217;re transitioning to a first-year ice kind of regime.” With less sea ice to reflect sunlight in the summer, the Arctic Ocean is absorbing more sunlight, a feedback that is speeding up global warming. For weeks, the sea ice had been tracking in line with the past record low years of 2020 and 2012. But then as cool, cloudy weather came to dominate the Arctic in early August, ice loss stalled and the region managed to avoid a calamitous year for sea ice cover. In fact, as of September 16, extent was at its 10th lowest on record, tracking above the last six years, covering 4.724 million square kilometers (1.824 million square miles). “We’re looking at a reprieve this year,” says Mark Serreze, executive director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) However, looks can be deceiving. The volume and concentration of sea ice, as well as the presence of multiyear ice — that is, older ice often between two and four meters thick — tell a different and worrying story. The big news: multiyear ice is at a record low in 2021, and it is likely volume is down too, though that data has yet to be fully analyzed.
