As populations grow, governments must provide homes, transport and other essential infrastructure while protecting the natural ecosystems that make cities liveable. These decisions are often framed as a trade-off between development and conservation, with forests viewed primarily as reservoirs of biodiversity or stores of carbon. What if we have been overlooking one of their most important contributions? As climate change intensifies, urban heat worsens and chronic diseases associated with sedentary, high-stress lifestyles continue to rise, a growing body of research suggests forests are far more than wildlife habitat. They are living public infrastructure that helps keep people physically healthy, mentally resilient and socially connected. Mature forests cool neighborhoods, encourage physical activity, provide opportunities for stress relief, strengthen community cohesion and support biodiversity, which is fundamental to many of these benefits. This perspective is particularly relevant in Singapore. The city-state has earned global recognition for integrating nature into one of the world&#8217;s most densely populated urban environments. Yet many of its remaining forests – including the 23-hectare (57-acre) Maju Forest in Clementi – are increasingly under pressure from development. Current plans would retain about one-third of the forest and convert approximately 15 hectares (37 acres) into public housing. Although he is not officially part of the Ebola response, his position within the Alur community, an ethnic group living in northwestern Uganda and northeastern DRC, has made him an important local ally. Uyergiu Mambo, a volunteer host on the community radio station Radio Terra FM, which states it has an audience of five million listeners, said he was frustrated with the situation, but not surprised. &#8220;It&#8217;s common for government employees to go unpaid for long periods. One potential consequence is an increased risk of pathogens jumping from animals to humans, prompting researchers to explore the dynamics of how viruses circulate in nature and how best to prevent the risk of this transmission. New research from Thailand identified genetic material belonging to Betacoronaviruses, a genus of viruses that includes the strains responsible for Covid-19, SARS and MERS, within commercially available agricultural products, raising concerns over a general lack of safety protocols to protect harvesters and handlers from exposure. In the study, published in PLOS One, researchers screened 41 samples of bat guano fertilizers commonly sold in Thai markets for the presence of coronaviruses. While all the samples were from products bought in Thailand, the researchers couldn’t determine the exact origins of the guano contained in each product, which may have been from outside the country. Two of the samples tested positive for Alphacoronaviruses, another genus of coronaviruses, and one tested positive for Betacoronaviruses. Genetic analysis showed the Betacoronavirus sample was closely genetically related to the sarbecovirus subgenus, the group that includes the Covid-causing pathogen, SARS-CoV-2. Importantly, the researchers note the viral strains detected are not known to infect humans. Moreover, they only detected a fragment of viral RNA, the genetic blueprint of viruses, and did not fully isolate a live virus in the samples. People in this area only die of cancer.” She sees illness as an integral part of the neighborhood’s landscape and includes her own family in the tally. Her husband Paulo José da Silva died at age 51 from a brain tumor. Cosma herself recently underwent surgery to remove a nodule. As she deals with the consequences of the treatment — a wound that burns and itches on the side of her chest — she continues to observe several sick relatives, neighbors and acquaintances. The connection between these cases and the environmental contamination that has marked Itatinga’s history has never been proven or investigated the way residents expected it to be. From the 1970s to the 1980s, part of the neighborhood was used for the disposal of oily sludge associated with oil exploration. Years later, homes were built on the land. Environmental investigations by public agencies found contaminants in the soil and groundwater. The goal is to develop a standard treatment for the strain, whose current outbreak has already resulted in nearly 1,500 confirmed cases and more than 450 deaths. According to DRC health authorities, clinical trials targeting this rare strain of Ebola, which is affecting the eastern part of the DRC, were officially launched on July 2 at the Evangelical Medical Center in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province. &#8220;During this epidemic, we also needed to conduct research to find specific drugs to treat this Ebola virus disease and to identify an effective molecule we can use to treat patients suffering from Ebola,&#8221; Dieudonné Mwamba Kazadi, director of the National Institute of Public Health and coordinator of the response to what is now the DRC&#8217;s 17th Ebola epidemic, told Mongabay. According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), three molecules will be studied in these clinical trials: Remdesivir and MBP134 for patients confirmed to be carrying the Bundibugyo virus, and Obeldsivir — a post-exposure prophylactic treatment to be administered to individuals exposed to the virus, including frontline response personnel. Researchers trapping small mammals in the Manombo Special Reserve caught tuft-tailed rats in the intact interior forest. In the nearby littoral forest, despite repeated efforts, they found none. The traps held black rats instead. The observation appears in a recent paper describing the first complete mitochondrial genomes for two endemic species, Eliurus webbi and Eliurus minor. The study, published in Mitochondrial DNA Part B by Elise Paietta and an international team of researchers, itself is technical. It assembles genetic sequences, places them within a sparse phylogeny, and notes gaps in what is known about these animals. Yet the fieldwork offers an important ecological finding: native rodents were confined to intact forest; degraded habitat was occupied by an introduced species. The pattern is not unusual. In many tropical systems, disturbance tends to favor generalists. Species with narrower ecological requirements recede as habitat fragments or is altered. 							<![CDATA[NEW YORK — Catherine Quayle has been caring for sick and injured wild animals in New York City for the past 12 years, first as a volunteer at the Wild Bird Fund, the city’s only wildlife rehabilitation center, and now as that NGO’s communications director and a licensed rehabber. Despite all her experience, she is stunned by what she’s seen at the clinic lately. “We certainly deal with viruses on a day-to-day basis, but nothing like this,” Quayle said, speaking from the nonprofit’s clinic on the Upper West Side. For the past four years, the fund has been dealing with a rising tide of suspected highly pathogenic avian influenza cases and operating in “triage mode” — setting up isolation areas, adopting new H5N1 virus protocols and relying on protective gear and regular testing. “People call us every day,” about sick and dying birds, Quayle said. “About Canada geese, especially.” Geese are just the tip of the iceberg. More than just a document, the agreement represents a global commitment to multilateralism and collaboration across borders and disciplines. It acknowledges a long-standing elemental truth: that human health is interdependent and deeply intertwined with the health of animals and our shared environment. Building on decades of global health engagement — from the pioneering 2004 Manhattan Principles to the 2019 Berlin Principles on One Health, and our influential international policy work through the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) — we have had the privilege, over the past three years, to represent the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in the pandemic agreement negotiations. From the earliest drafts, when One Health was unfamiliar to many delegates and prevention was little more than an afterthought, we have consistently championed a transformative vision that commits to actions to prevent pandemics at the source — those interfaces in nature where viral pathogens first make outside contact. 							<![CDATA[When the Parker Lake wildfire erupted near Fort Nelson in British Columbia, Canada on May 10, it marked the start of what many fear could be yet another devastating Canadian fire season. With an ongoing multiyear drought, forests across western Canada are tinder dry and primed to burn. By February, hundreds of “zombie fires” that had lain dormant underground over winter started to smolder. In April, British Columbia’s spring snowpack was just 63% of normal, the lowest ever recorded. Then, in mid-May, there was a week of hot and windy days — and a spark set the forest outside Fort Nelson alight. Strong winds drove the flames toward the community, advancing 8 kilometers (5 miles) in just four hours. By May 12, officials had told nearly 4000 people to evacuate. As of June 13, about 323,000 hectares (798,000 acres) of forest had already burned this year in British Columbia. That’s three-quarters of the average annual amount over the past 20 years. To the east, in Alberta, similar scenes have unfolded. This year’s fires have erupted even while memories of last year’s record fire season are still fresh. Last year, 15 million hectares (37 million acres) burned in Canada, an area one-sixth the size of British Columbia and more than twice the previous record. Four percent of Canada’s forested land went up in flames that year alone. Those fires drove nearly a quarter of a million people from their homes. 							<![CDATA[Nepal is a small biodiversity-rich country that is subjected to climatic vagaries: conditions range from tropical in the south to alpine in the north. While Nepal contributes ~ 0.027% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, it is the 4th most vulnerable country in the world to climate change. A climate change vulnerability assessment conducted in 2010 showed that more than 1.9 million Nepalese (7.03% total population) are highly vulnerable to climate change, and 10 million are at increased risk. About 80% of rivers and streams, major water sources for drinking and irrigation, are fed by glaciers that are retreating. With global warming, the Himalayan glaciers and ice caps are melting at an alarming rate resulting in an increase in the number of glacial lakes in that region. Specifically, these glacial lakes have almost doubled numerically in the last four decades associated with increased frequency of flash floods and overflowing rivers due to glacial outbursts. Recently, Nepal has been experiencing major disasters almost every year: the Seti Flood in 2012; the Jure landslide in 2014; the Gorkha earthquake in 2015; glacial lake outburst floods in Bhote Koshi in 2016; the Barun Khola and the Terai floods in 2017; the tornado in the Bara-Parsa district in 2019; the landslides and debris flow in Sindhupalchok in 2020; and landslides and debris flow in Mustang in 2021. On 15 June 2021, landslides in Melamchi Sindhupalchowk killed 5 persons, adversely impacting local people and disrupting the water supply to Kathmandu, the capital city. 							<![CDATA[As an American living in Germany and working for an international conservation organization, I find that most everyday people I speak with do not realize that in 2008, Chancellor Angela Merkel made a commitment of €500 million per year to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with a focus on protected areas. That was an extraordinary commitment by the German government—something worth knowing and to be proud of. Initially intended as a four-year commitment, this annual allocation has continued through to this day, making Germany one of the world’s largest bilateral donors to biodiversity conservation. In addition to biodiversity, Germany has also shown significant leadership in the Global Health sector. As we confront a pandemic originating with the zoonotic transmission of a virus from wildlife to humans that has devastated the global economy, there is now an opportunity to combine these two commitments and areas of expertise. In so doing, we work to create a new pathway toward green recovery: One Health. The One Health approach acknowledges the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health. In 2004, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) brought together stakeholders in global health to discuss issues at the nexus of animal, human, and ecosystem health. That’s led WCS to include health components as a standard part of its programming, he added, “even though we are the Wildlife Conservation Society.” But getting that message across to consumers in wealthier countries, who are better insulated from the immediate health risks of ecosystem degradation, as well as key decision-makers, isn’t as straightforward. That’s why WCS and other conservationists, scientists and policymakers are calling for better integration between the environment and health sectors to deal with the challenges we face.
