As part of an effort to expand African environmental and conservation news coverage, Mongabay welcomed David Akana as the program director of our recently launched news bureau, Mongabay Africa. David began his career in journalism in his homeland of Cameroon as a writer for The Post Newspaper, before transitioning to broadcasting. He then worked for Radio Reine, Radio Environment, and the Cameroon Radio Television Corporation, while freelancing for Reuters and RFI. Over the past 10 years, David has been driving innovative environmental journalism initiatives and reporting projects in the Congo Basin as a journalist, media trainer and communications expert. He played a significant role as the managing editor of InfoCongo, the Congo Basin’s first geojournalism platform, and currently serves as a member of the U.N. Ocean Decade’s Strategic Communications Group; an advisory committee member for the Pulitzer Center’s Rainforest Journalism Fund; and an editorial committee member for Our Planet on Earth. As program director, David will oversee and manage Mongabay Africa‘s operations in a high-impact leadership role. He shares his thoughts here on the vision and opportunities ahead for the nascent bureau. Mongabay: What sparked your interest in environmental issues? David Akana: Interestingly, my career started as a sports reporter, and the environment wasn’t even on my radar. Mongabay has won the prestigious Biophilia Award for Environmental Communication for its “outstanding track record” in communicating issues related to nature and biodiversity, especially in countries in the Global South. The Biophilia Award was launched in 2019 by the BBVA Foundation, the charitable arm of one of Spain’s biggest banks, to recognize the work of professionals and organizations working to improve public understanding of ecological issues through the dissemination of scientific knowledge and sharing of new perspectives. The award comes with a cash prize of 100,000 euros (about $106,000). American journalist Rhett Butler founded Mongabay in 1999. Image courtesy of Rhett A. Butler. Award-winning journalist Karla Mendes (right) interviewing sources for a palm oil investigation in Pará, Brazil. Image courtesy of Karla Mendes. The evaluation committee praised Mongabay for successfully making “the connection between science and journalism by disseminating research on environmental protection and making studies available under conditions of maximum access.” These achievements have enabled Mongabay to “highlight specific situations or serious environmental problems affecting communities that tend to be overlooked by mainstream news sources,” the committee said in a statement. Founded in 1999 by U.S. journalist Rhett A. Butler, Mongabay is a nonprofit digital platform that has built up a network of 800 correspondents in 80 countries and publishes original reporting in six languages, including English, Indonesian, Spanish, French, Hindi, and Brazilian Portuguese. Mongabay reports on issues all over the world, but it has a particular focus on tropical regions within Asia and Latin America, which are home…This article was originally published on Mongabay

A group that works to protect the rare okapi, a type of forest giraffe found only in the Congo Basin, has has won mongabay.com’s 2012 conservation award. The Okapi Conservation Project [DONATE] has been working to protect the okapi and its habitat in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for 25 years. The group was instrumental in establishing the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a 13,700-square-kilometer tract of wilderness in the Ituri Forest of northeastern DRC. While the Okapi Conservation Project has had a long track record of success, earlier this year it was devastated by a brutal attack on the reserve’s headquarters. Two wildlife rangers were among the six people killed during June 24 assault. 14 endangered okapi were slaughtered during the early morning raid, which was reportedly a response to a crackdown on illegal elephant poaching and gold mining inside the Okapi Wildlife Reserve. The attack was led by Mai Mai Simba rebels. The militia destroyed buildings and equipment at the facility, which is shared by the Institute in the Congo for Conservation of Nature (ICCN) and the Okapi Conservation Project. Computers, phones, medical supplies, food, and other gear were stolen. The dead included two ICCN rangers, the wife of one of the rangers, an immigration worker, and 2 residents of Epulu, the town where the attack took place. In recognition of the shocking attack and the general struggles of working in the DRC, Mongabay.com selected the Okapi Conservation Project as this year’s recipient of the award. “What happened in…This article was originally published on Mongabay

The Panamanian golden toad, a species now extinct in the wild, is being bred in a number of facilities around the world to ensure its survival. Photo by Rhett A. Butler. An effort to save the world’s most endangered amphibians has won mongabay.com’s 2011 conservation award. Amphibian Ark [Donate] — a joint effort of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the IUCN/SSC Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, and the IUCN/SSC Amphibian Specialist Group — is working to evaluate the status of threatened amphibians, raise awareness about the global amphibian extinction crisis, and set up captive breeding programs. The initiative is targeting 500 species “whose threats currently cannot be mitigated quickly enough to stave off extinction” — in other words, 500 species that will not survive without captive breeding efforts. Amphibians — which include frogs and toads, salamanders and newts, and caecilians — are among the most threatened of all animal groups. They face a range of threats, including the outbreak of chytridiomycosis, a deadly fungal epidemic that is rapidly extinguishing amphibians around the world; habitat loss from deforestation, forest degradation, and loss of wetlands; the impacts of climate change, including shifts in rainfall and temperatures; introduced species; pollution from pesticide and fertilizer use; and overexploitation for the pet trade and human consumption. Nearly 1,900 (30 percent) of the 6,285 amphibian species assessed by the IUCN are threatened with extinction. Some 165 are known to have gone extinct and another 130 are “missing” — they haven’t been seen in years and…This article was originally published on Mongabay

Two groups working with local communities to conserve forests in Sulawesi have won mongabay.com’s 2010 Conservation Award. The Alliance for Tompotika Conservation (AlTo) [donate], which works in Central Sulawesi, and the Nantu Forest Conservation Program, which operates in North Sulawesi, were recognized for their efforts to protect endangered forests on the Indonesian island, which is known for its high levels of endemic species. “This year we selected two organizations working in Sulawesi to highlight the conservation significance of the island and the threats it faces,” said Rhett A. Butler, founder of mongabay.com, a site that provides news and information on tropical forests and the environment. “Both AITo and the Nantu Forest Conservation Program rely on strong support from local communities to protect endangered forests and wildlife.” Sulawesi’s biodiversity is partly the result of its strange geography. Authors of a 2007 study on forest cover called Sulawesi “a large island without an interior” in that no location is more than 100 km from the coast. Map by Rhett A. Butler “Sulawesi has long been overlooked,” Butler continued. “A lot of people in the United States have never heard of it, yet alone place it on the map.” Straddling the Wallace line, an area of biological discontinuity between Asia and Australia, Sulawesi is characterized by high levels of endemism–more than 60 percent of its mammals and more than one third of its birds are found nowhere else on the planet. So unusual the island’s biodiversity, it helped inspire Alfred Russel Wallace to…This article was originally published on Mongabay

Ranger blogging network wins accolade for efforts to drive support for conservation. WildlifeDirect, a group that promotes conservation through blogging by rangers and scientists, has won mongabay.com’s “Innovation in Conservation Award” for 2009. The prize, which includes a cash donation and and prominent placement on the mongabay.com web site and newsletter for the month of December, is granted each year to an organization using an unconventional and highly effective approach to conserving forests and biodiversity. “We’re thrilled to win Mongabay’s Innovation in Conservation Award,” said Paula Kahumbu, Executive Director of WildlifeDirect. WildlifeDirect provides a platform to more than 100 wildlife bloggers in dozens of countries across Africa, Asia, and South America. Through their posts, which often include photos and videos, WildlifeDirect bloggers provide first-hand information from the front lines of conservation, building awareness for their projects and a means for attracting contributions, which are used from everything from paying ranger salaries to buying field supplies. WildlifeDirect bloggers are also news-makers; they have broken a number of stories since the site debuted in 2006, including the 2007 slaying of seven mountain gorillas in Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park and last year’s invasion of Virunga by rebels. WildlifeDirect bloggers have documented births of endangered species in the wild and reported on new threats to parks and wildlife. But WildlifeDirect is going beyond helping wildlife and protected areas. Through computer training and other support, the group brings new opportunities to communities that are often poor and isolated. The story of 23…This article was originally published on Mongabay
