							<![CDATA[Mutant algae may fuel cars Mutant algae may fuel cars mongabay.com April 2, 2008 Chemically-modified algae may become key to the production of hydrogen gas which seen by researchers as a next-generation fuel source. &#8220;We believe there is a fundamental advantage in looking at the production of hydrogen by photosynthesis as a renewable fuel,&#8221; said David Tiede, a senior chemist the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Argonne National Laboratory. &#8220;Right now, ethanol is being produced from corn, but generating ethanol from corn is a thermodynamically much more inefficient process.&#8221; Tiede says that the process would work by exploiting hydrogenase, an enzyme that can create small amounts of hydrogen gas. Tiede and his colleagues at Argonne are working to introduce the hydrogen-generating part of the enzyme into the photosynthesis process to create larger amount of hydrogen gas. &#8220;Biology can do it, but it&#8217;s making it do it at 5-10 percent yield that&#8217;s the problem,&#8221; Tiede said. &#8220;What we would like to do is take that catalyst out of hydrogenase and put into the photosynthetic protein framework.&#8221; Tiede says algae offers a number benefits over corn and other food crops in fuel production. &#8220;If you have terrestrial plants like corn, you are restricted to where you could grow them,&#8221; Tiede said. &#8220;There is a problem now with biofuel crops competing with food crops because they are both using the same space. The executives said electric cars will be a better way to cut emissions and improve fuel efficiency. Speaking at the Geneva auto show, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told reporters that advances in lithium-ion batteries will enable electric cars to drive up to 300 miles without recharging, making them more attractive to the mass market. He added that fuel cells are too expensive for mainstream use. &#8220;If we get lithium-ion to 300 miles, then you need to ask yourself, Why do you need fuel cells?&#8221; Lutz was quoted as saying. &#8220;We are nowhere [near] where we need to be on the costs curve&#8221; for fuel-cell vehicles. Separately Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe echoed the sentiment, saying that costs for fuel cells remain high and the infrastructure needed to distribute hydrogen is not in place. A team of researchers, led by Y.-H. Percival Zhang of Virginia Tech University say that a combination of 13 enzymes can convert polysaccharides (i.e. sugary carbohydrates) and water into hydrogen. The new process would be significant because it is cost efficient and &#8220;clean&#8221; relative to producing hydrogen gas from natural gas, as most hydrogen is currently produced. &#8220;Polysaccharides like starch and cellulose are used by plants for energy storage and building blocks and are very stable until exposed to enzymes,&#8221; states a news release from Virginia Tech (VTU). &#8220;Just add enzymes to a mixture of starch and water and &#8216;the enzymes use the energy in the starch to break up water into only carbon dioxide and hydrogen.'&#8221; A membrane separates off the carbon dioxide and the hydrogen is used by the fuel cell to generate electricity. The process takes place at low temperature &#8212; about 86 degrees F &#8212; and atmospheric pressure. 							<![CDATA[Cell phone batteries could be powered by OJ Cell phone batteries could be powered by OJ mongabay.com March 26, 2007 Researchers at Saint Louis University in Missouri have developed a fuel cell battery that can run on virtually any sugar source &#8212; from orange juice to tree sap &#8212; and may last three to four times longer than conventional lithium ion batteries. &#8220;This study shows that renewable fuels can be directly employed in batteries at room temperature to lead to more energy-efficient battery technology than metal-based approaches,&#8221; said Shelley Minteer, an electrochemist at Saint Louis University who described the findings at the 233rd national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago. &#8220;It demonstrates that by bridging biology and chemistry, we can build a better battery that&#8217;s also cleaner for the environment.&#8221; The batteries work by using enzymes to strip charges from sugar to generate electricity in fuel cells while leaving water as the main byproduct. All materials used to build the sugar battery are biodegradable, explained Minteer. The batteries could run on a wide range of sugars. Saint Louis University chemistry professor Shelley Minteer, Ph.D. &#8220;So far, Minteer has run the batteries on glucose, flat sodas, sweetened drink mixes and tree sap, with promising results,&#8221; reported a news release from Saint Louis University. &#8220;She also tested carbonated beverages, but carbonation appears to weaken the fuel cell. Danish researchers develop hydrogen tablet; stores hydrogen in inexpensive and safe material Scientists at the Technical University of Denmark have invented a technology which may be an important step towards the hydrogen economy: a hydrogen tablet that effectively stores hydrogen in an inexpensive and safe material. With the new hydrogen tablet, it becomes much simpler to use the environmentally-friendly energy of hydrogen. Hydrogen is a non-polluting fuel, but since it is a light gas it occupies too much volume, and it is flammable. When we think of timber from lush, tropical forests, it conjures up images of valuable old-growth trees pillaged by logging companies and illegal timber mafias, ignoring the plight of wildlife and local communities. But tropical timber does not have to be bad, some experts say. Tropical wood forms an integral part of many of our daily-use products, like furniture, toilet paper, flooring, construction, and packaging material. And this important resource can be harvested from forests responsibly and sustainably, experts say, ensuring that we meet our future wood needs while conserving forests. “When you speak about tropical forests with anybody, my mom or whoever, it&#8217;s always corruption, it&#8217;s always blood, it&#8217;s always stealing, it&#8217;s always dirty. Nobody wants tropical timber anymore,” Paolo Cerutti, a senior scientist at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) who has been working on sustainable forest management in sub-Saharan Africa, told Mongabay. “But that is bad because we can harvest the forest in a way that is clean and proper and sustainable.” It is this need for “clean” timber that gave birth to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) — a voluntary, worldwide certification program formed in 1993 by a group of environmentalists, indigenous groups, human rights organizations, and timber users and traders.
