Bringing the protection of the “Atlantic Galapagos” one step closer to becoming a reality, the Governor of St. Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha, Philip Rushbrook, designated a large-sale Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the waters around Ascension Island last month. The MPA will cover the entire Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Ascension Island, a UK Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. That means that an area of more than 440,000 square kilometers or 170,000 square miles will be included in the Ascension Island MPA, making it one of the largest in the world. While legislation and a management plan won’t be finalized until long-term funding has been secured for the MPA, it has been proposed that commercial fishing and mineral extraction be prohibited altogether within the waters around Ascension Island, which has been described as a “miniature Galapagos Islands” because of its rich biodiversity. Ascension Island and its territorial waters provide important habitat for several key species of endemic fish, green turtles, land crabs, seabirds, sharks, and tuna, among other wildlife species. The island’s EEZ also includes extensive seamounts, underwater mountains that teem with life. The designation of the MPA was made at the recommendation of the Ascension Island Council, which said in a statement: “The designation of such a large-scale Marine Protected Area will ensure that the near pristine marine environment around Ascension Island will be protected for future generations. We now eagerly await appropriate funding from the UK Government to support the ongoing future management costs of…This article was originally published on Mongabay

In a remote spot in the South Atlantic, roughly 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from the coast of West Africa, lies Ascension Island, one of the U.K.’s Overseas Territories. In January 2016, the British government announced plans made by Ascension’s elected governing body to protect the island’s biodiverse waters with a marine reserve spanning 230,000 square kilometers (90,000 square miles), an area almost as big as the U.K. itself. Fishing is prohibited in half this area and closely regulated in the other half. On March 14, however, the U.K. Treasury announced in its annual Spring Statement that not only would the Ascension Island Marine Protected Area (MPA) almost double in size to a massive 443,000 square kilometers (170,000 square miles), but that all of it would become a fully protected “no-take” zone. Commercial fishing will be prohibited, although the local community will still be able to fish for recreation and subsistence. Currently, governments are working toward a pledge to protect 10 percent of the world’s oceans by 2020. In September 2018, the British government joined calls to increase the goal and protect of 30 percent of the world’s oceans by 2030. “I’m delighted to hear that the U.K. has heeded our call to fully protect the waters around Ascension Island, a jewel in the Atlantic Ocean,”said the U.N.’s Patron of the Oceans, endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh, in a government press release announcing the new MPA. “Protecting 30% of the world’s oceans need not be a dream.” The dramatic coastline of Ascension…This article was originally published on Mongabay

To date, nineteen nations have hit or matched record high temperatures this year, according to Jeff Master’s Wunder Blog, making 2010 the only year to have so many national records. In contrast, no nation this year has hit a record cold temperature. Over the past decade, which was the warmest on record, 75 nations have seen record highs, whereas 15 have seen record lows. Nations hitting record highs this year are the Ascension Islands, the Solomon Islands, Finland, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Colombia, Zambia, Cyprus, Myanmar, Chad, Niger, Sudan, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, and most recently Bolivia. If Palestine were nation, the year’s total would be twenty, since it hit an all-time high of 51.4°C (124.5°F). This year is looking to be among the warmest yet recorded since data keeping began in the lat 19th Century. While the first half of the year was unusually warm worldwide, an expected La Nina phenomenon has recently brought cooler-than-average temperatures to much of the Northern Hemisphere. Climate experts overwhelmingly conclude that the world is warming due to extensive greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. Asian continent sees warmest temperature ever recorded. The summer isn’t over yet, but already seventeen nations have matched or beaten their all-time heat records. According to Jeff Masters’ WunderBlog, Belarus, the Ukraine, Cyprus, Russia, Finland, Qatar, the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Niger, Chad, Kuwait, Iraq, Pakistan, Colombia, Myanmar, Ascension Island, and the Solomon Islands have all equaled or broken their top temperature records this year. In addition, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Asia was taken in Pakistan at 128 degrees Fahrenheit (53 degrees Celsius); this incredible temperature still has to be reviewed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Russia is currently undergoing a heat crisis with drought, forest and peatland fires, and dangerous temperatures threatening Moscow and parts of Central Russia. Thousands of people are thought to have died due to heat-related issues and Russia has halted wheat exports after the crop was devastated, aggravating fears of a global food crisis. The head of Russia’s weather service, Alexander Frolov, has said that Russia hasn’t seen such a heat wave in 1,000 years. While 17 nations have hit their highest ever temperatures in the last seven months, only one has recorded its lowest: Guinea in January recorded an all-time low. Climate experts overwhelmingly say that the world is warming due to extensive greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. The last six months have been the hottest on record worldwide since data-taking began in the 1880s, while the past decade (from 2000-2009) was the warmest decade on record.
