Burrowing owls do not usually dig their own homes. They occupy tunnels made by mammals, especially badgers and prairie dogs. At Umatilla, the decline of those animals had removed much of the owls’ shelter. By the late 2000s, only a few breeding pairs remained. David H. Johnson, who died on June 15th, aged 69, decided that the shortage of burrows could be addressed. He and his collaborators buried plastic barrels and connected them to the surface with lengths of pipe. The structures were crude substitutes for badger burrows, intended to keep the population breeding while the recovery of its habitat remained a longer-term task. The owls accepted them. Within a year, the number of breeding pairs had risen. Over the following decade, the depot became home to one of the region’s most closely studied burrowing-owl populations. Researchers banded chicks, recorded calls, tested nest designs, and tracked the birds’ movements. By 2024, they were monitoring more than 100 nesting attempts and had banded nearly 500 chicks that season. Johnson had been interested in owls since childhood. Boats are lifted in and out of the water by crane, and the fleet is limited to smaller vessels that work close to shore. Those limits have defined both the economics of fishing and the character of the community. The pressures facing such places have accumulated over time. Declines in some fisheries, shifting regulations, and rising costs have narrowed margins for small operators. Entry into the industry has become more difficult, as access to permits and quotas has tightened. In response, fishermen in Port Orford have experimented with ways to retain more control over their catch, linking how fish are harvested to how they are sold and understood by consumers. Aaron Longton was part of that response. He died in January aged 64. He came to commercial fishing later than many, having worked in other trades before buying a modest boat and a permit for a few thousand dollars. From that starting point, he built a career through persistence. Fishing, as he often noted, was not only physical labor but a form of applied observation: understanding currents, habitats, and behavior well enough to anticipate where fish might be found and how stocks might change over time. On Sept. 8, 2020, a brush field in southern Oregon, in the northwestern U.S., caught fire. Over the next week, &#8220;walls&#8221; of flame tore through the towns of Talent and Phoenix in the Rogue River Valley. Here, hot, dry summers crisp low-lying vegetation, and convective winds — like those that kicked up in early September 2020 — can fan the spread of fire from even the smallest ignition. The 1,300-hectare (3,300-acre) Almeda Drive Fire was small by contemporary standards in the U.S. West, where blazes repeatedly shatter records. And this one was human-caused, as are more than 80% of fires in the U.S. But neither statistic made it any less devastating to the families of Talent and Phoenix, more than 2,600 of whom lost their homes to the blaze. Amid a swirling mix of past mismanagement of forests in the western U.S., an explosion of dense settlements, and hotter, drier conditions on account of climate change, there&#8217;s been a push in recent decades to actively manage forests for fire risk — aimed at avoiding disasters like the Almeda fire. The idea is that management tools such as forest thinning, prescribed burning and post-fire restoration can help claw back some of the characteristics of how forests used to be, when fire itself was a more active part of the landscape. Thompson was just 7 years old when she witnessed an apocalypse. &#8220;A day after our world renewal ceremony, we saw all these fish lined up on the shores, just rotting in piles,” says Thompson, a Yurok tribal member who is also Karuk and living in present-day Northern California. “This is something that&#8217;s never happened in our oral history, since time immemorial.&#8221; During the 2002 fish kill in the Klamath River, an estimated 30,000 to 70,000 salmon died when the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation diverted water to farms instead of letting it flow downstream. This catastrophic event catalyzed a movement to remove four dams that had choked the river for nearly a century. Now, that decades-long tribal-led movement has finally come to fruition. As of Oct. 5, the four lower Klamath hydroelectric dams have been fully removed from the river, freeing 676 kilometers (420 miles) of the river and its tributaries. This is the largest dam-removal project in history. Brook M. 							<![CDATA[As a field biologist, Keith Perchemlides has often watched flames dance around tiny ponds that mark the remains of a vast wetland that once covered a large part of southwestern Oregon’s Rogue River Valley. Often, he was the one that set fire to the dry grass. Back then, he was working for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as a part of a team trying to restore habitat for vernal pool fairy shrimp (Branchinecta lynchi), a translucent invertebrate with walrus-like tusks and a forked, red tail. In the soil, their eggs survive long droughts when their ephemeral pockets of water, called vernal pools, disappear. The inch-long crustacean feeds on small particles in the pools and subsequently serve as food for waterfowl, songbirds and amphibians. Without fire, invasive weeds or trees will crowd these basins where rainwater collects into seasonal, shallow ponds, limiting where this threatened species can live. It builds up this thick, dense layer of thatch that doesn’t break down quickly. 							<![CDATA[The haunting deep-green forests of Oregon are more than a backdrop for angsty teen vampires in the Twilight series. These coastal temperate rainforests on the west coast of the United States are some of the most important carbon storage facilities in the world and, at a local scale, shelter 80% of the drinking water for the state’s residents. A recent study published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change is the first to determine which forests are the highest priority for conservation by analyzing data on drinking water sources, biodiversity, carbon storage and forest resilience. “Here&#8217;s a map that shows you where&#8217;s the biggest bang for your buck and what we need to protect first,” Beverly E. Law, the study’s lead author and professor emeritus of global change biology and terrestrial systems science in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, told Mongabay. “We&#8217;ve laid out what needs to be done, where we need to start, and where we need to look first.” Most (67%) of the high-priority forests, researchers found, are on federal lands. Some of these areas include forestlands around the Devil’s Staircase Wilderness and Elliot State Forest in the Coast Range; Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Blue Mountains; Kalmiopsis Wilderness in the Klamath Mountains; and Crater Lake National Park in the Cascade Mountains. 							<![CDATA[Earlier this summer, members of the Forest Legality Alliance (FLA) gathered in Washington, DC for their Semi-Annual Membership Meeting. As a precursor to the upcoming CITES COP17 meeting in September, the FLA member meeting focused on issues pertaining to illegally traded CITES-listed timber species, proposals to add new timber species to the CITES list and wood identification technologies to aid CITES implementation. Representing the Forensics Laboratory at the US Fish and Wildlife Service was Kristen Finch, who presented her work with the Direct Analysis in Real Time Mass Spectrometry (DART-TOFMS) machine. DART-TOFMS can determine the full chemical profile of a piece of wood, rather than identifying a timber species through the genetics or structure of a sample. 							<![CDATA[Government and company officials in California and Oregon have reached an agreement to remove four large hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River in the hopes that it will restore the river’s historic fish runs. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) called it “one of the largest river restoration efforts in the nation.” Removal of the dams, three in California and one in Oregon, is scheduled to begin in 2020. The agreement was signed at the mouth of the Klamath last week by California Governor Jerry Brown and Oregon Governor Kate Brown, as well as Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan, and the president and CEO of Pacific Power, the private utility company that owns the dams. &#8220;This historic agreement will enable Oregon and California and the interested parties to get these four dams finally removed and the Klamath River restored to its pristine beauty,&#8221; Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement. The hydroelectric dams were built along the Klamath River almost a century ago, blocking wild salmon and steelhead trout from reaching southern Oregon Klamath Tribes that have depended on them for thousands of years. Proponents of the agreement argue that removing the dams and restoring hundreds of miles of river to its natural condition will help save fisheries and protect the environment for California, Oregon and sovereign Native American tribes.
