							<![CDATA[As humans encroach further into ecosystems, people and wildlife are brought into closer proximity. One potential consequence is an increased risk of pathogens jumping from animals to humans, prompting researchers to explore the dynamics of how viruses circulate in nature and how best to prevent the risk of this transmission. New research from Thailand identified genetic material belonging to Betacoronaviruses, a genus of viruses that includes the strains responsible for Covid-19, SARS and MERS, within commercially available agricultural products, raising concerns over a general lack of safety protocols to protect harvesters and handlers from exposure. In the study, published in PLOS One, researchers screened 41 samples of bat guano fertilizers commonly sold in Thai markets for the presence of coronaviruses. While all the samples were from products bought in Thailand, the researchers couldn’t determine the exact origins of the guano contained in each product, which may have been from outside the country. Two of the samples tested positive for Alphacoronaviruses, another genus of coronaviruses, and one tested positive for Betacoronaviruses. Genetic analysis showed the Betacoronavirus sample was closely genetically related to the sarbecovirus subgenus, the group that includes the Covid-causing pathogen, SARS-CoV-2. Importantly, the researchers note the viral strains detected are not known to infect humans. Moreover, they only detected a fragment of viral RNA, the genetic blueprint of viruses, and did not fully isolate a live virus in the samples. The region is a biodiversity hotspot, home to native species including trogons and antelope jackrabbits (Lepus alleni). “These bats just go, like little kids on a sugar rush,” Hudson told Mongabay by phone. “They&#8217;re taking in so much of this rich sugar stuff that they&#8217;re flying about doing happy laps, as it were, in the sky.” The bats’ long tongues can extend nearly 8 centimeters (3 inches) from their body and are covered in hair-like protusions, papillae, that help it drink nectar from flowers. They primarily feed on agave nectar, cactus flowers, soft fruits and the occasional insect. Hudson used a movement trigger and flash to snap the moment. “It all happens so fast,” he said. “You have to get the bat as it&#8217;s coming into the plant and see if you can capture it as it hits the plant.” The agave plant is used to make tequila and mezcal, Mexico’s national spirit. But according to bat ecologist Paul Webala, there is no conclusive scientific evidence linking bats to Ebola and the natural reservoir remains unknown. The current Ebola outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, a variant for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments, according to the World Health Organization. In this interview with Mongabay, Webala discusses why bats are often misunderstood, details the important ecological services they provide, and explains why habitat destruction may pose a greater risk for zoonotic diseases that spill over between animals and humans than bats themselves. 							<![CDATA[KAMPALA — In the hills and trading centers of western Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities are racing to limit the spread of Bundibugyo ebolavirus, a rare species of Ebola for which there is currently no vaccine or cure. The number of suspected cases in the DRC is fast approaching 1,000, with Uganda reporting seven cases, as of May 25. The first cluster of cases of the ongoing outbreak was detected in early May in Ituri province in the DRC, which shares a border with Uganda. The close community and economic ties between people residing on both sides of the border has complicated efforts to contain the outbreak, with Uganda taking measures to stem the flow of people. The Ebola virus driving the current outbreak is named for Uganda’s Bundibugyo district, where it was first detected almost two decades ago. (International health bodies including the World Health Organization have since moved away from naming disease-causing pathogens after places, citing stigmatization.) Most Ebola outbreaks to date have been caused by the Zaire ebolavirus, which also drove the 2014-2016 epidemic centered on West Africa. 							<![CDATA[Billy Mclean knew nothing about bats. As a lifelong Kiwi, there was no reason for him to. Unlike in neighboring Australia and other parts of Oceania whose renowned flying foxes grow meter-long wingspans, Aotearoa New Zealand is famous for its birds, not bats. Mclean worked as an arborist in the Franklin area, an agricultural county south of Auckland on the North Island. He said he felt he knew everything about the local forest, until one night 23 years ago. As he headed home from a nighttime walk on his property, a shadow swooped from the arched tree canopy. He ducked — all his years spent in the trees, and he had never seen anything move like it. Mclean said it took a minute to register what he had seen. “As the picture develops, you get that classic crescent-shaped wing,” he told Mongabay by phone. “That’s when I knew. We’ve got bats.” That night sparked a passion for bats that Mclean has been pursuing ever since. After years of being “straight-up ridiculed” for trying to convince his community that these creatures lived in their backyards, many are starting to believe him. Today, he’s an active member with Finding Franklin Bats (FFB), a locally run research project teaching community members how to find, monitor and protect the overlooked bats that live in their backyards. Roughly a quarter, or 35 species, are listed as data deficient or not listed at all, meaning their conservation status hasn’t yet been evaluated, the report notes. Sixteen bat species are found only in India, including the somber bat (Cnephaeus tatei), Salim Ali’s fruit bat (Latidens salimalii), the Kolar leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros hypophyllus) and the Nicobar flying fox (Pteropus faunulus). Most of the endemic species are either threatened or data deficient. Chakravarty said there’s still plenty to learn about the ecology of India’s bats. For example, many bats have been found roosting inside caves, plants and even human-made structures like mines and culverts, old buildings and archaeological sites. Hundreds of bats, many rescued from war-torn areas in the east of the country, were released late Saturday at one of multiple events around Ukraine planned to coincide with the arrival of spring. “This is important for us as an organization because these are on a red list of endangered animals. Preserving them is very important,” said Anastasiia Vovk, a volunteer at the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center, which organized the release. All 28 bat species in Ukraine are listed as protected animals due to declining populations. For many attendees, the event offered welcome relief and an excuse for a family outing after a harsh winter marked by subzero temperatures, nightly Russian drone and missile attacks and crippling power cuts. With a meter-wide (3.2-foot) wingspan, they transport large quantities of pollen and rain down seeds in their poop, helping establish new trees. A new study in Scientific Reports provides the first economic valuation of the ecosystem services provided by flying foxes in Australia, focusing on their significant contribution to the timber industry. Recent fires and heat stress events have led to colony loss and a dramatic drop in bat numbers; more than 80% of some populations have been wiped out amid extreme heat events. Justin Welbergen, an animal ecology professor at Western Sydney University who was not part of the study, told The New York Times, “A single hot afternoon can result in mortality on a regional scale and in biblical proportions, with tens of thousands of dead flying foxes.” Flying foxes can travel thousands of kilometers per year, spreading pollen and seeds over large distances, making their economic value immense. First author Alfredo Ortega González, a University of Sydney scientist, said in a video interview with Mongabay, “There is no bird that can move the distance, on average, that a flying fox can move in a night.” The study authors calculated the spatial extent of the bats’ nightly foraging, based on the locations of 1,209 roosts of four mainland Australian flying fox species (Pteropus poliocephalus, P. 							<![CDATA[As the afternoon fades at the Three Sisters Caves in Kenya’s Kwale county, David Wechuli’s team begins setting up nearly invisible nets along the hillsides in the coastal forest. “When dusk arrives, bats begin pouring out of the caves,” Wechuli says. “Some fly straight into the nets. We quickly remove them, carefully untangling each bat before taking morphometric measurements such as body size, weight and wing length.” The captured bats are carefully placed in small cotton bags, allowing them to breathe while preventing escape over the next two or three hours. The research team from Bat Conservation International (BCI) will work into the night, measuring each animal, determining their sex, and taking tissue samples to check for the presence of disease, before photographing each one and releasing it back into the night. Earlier in the afternoon, the team will have inspected the site, moving carefully through the dark cave filled with thousands of bats clinging to the cave’s roof and rock walls. “Some caves are deep tunnels, more than 100 meters [330 feet] long,” Wechuli tells Mongabay in a phone interview. “Others have bats roosting very high. 							<![CDATA[With hues of orange and black on its wings and a furry, fluffy face, the painted woolly bat is a stunner. But its beauty has become a deadly liability. People want to hang the bats — dead and stuffed — on their walls, display them as collectibles and even set them in jewelry. In recent years, taxidermied and framed bats have become popular as Halloween décor and, oddly, as Christmas tree decorations, sold to customers in the U.S., as well as Europe and Canada. This macabre trade first came to light in 2015 when scientists found dead bats, including painted woolly bats, for sale in Vietnam’s largest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City. Then, nearly a decade later, scientists realized that it wasn’t just a few stores selling bats: There’s also a huge online market. In 2024, researchers from the Bat Specialist Group at the IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority, documented nearly 800 bats for sale on Amazon.com, eBay and Etsy over a three-month period. Their “Dying for décor” study, published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research, suggests that the trade is global. A quarter of the bats sold online were from a single species: painted woolly bats (Kerivoula picta). After a successful awareness campaign by conservation organizations, eBay and Etsy banned the sale of bat products on their sites in 2025. 							<![CDATA[Limestone karst is like an island. Each rocky formation rises distinctly out of the surrounding landscape. Over time, an array of highly specialized species, each adapted to that particular landform’s jagged forests and dark caves, have evolved. As a result, many karst species are endemic and perilously rare. Myanmar is home to Southeast Asia’s second-largest area of limestone karst, after Indonesia; its rugged peaks cover a total of more than 80,000 square kilometers (31,000 square miles. The area hosts the entire global population of Popa langurs (Trachypithecus popa), one of the world’s most recently described primates, and scores of gecko species described only in the past decade. Scientists say countless others likely remain tucked away in obscurity, waiting to be discovered. Yet despite its biodiversity, less than 1% of Myanmar’s limestone karst is formally protected, prompting concerns from conservationists about fragile wildlife populations that are facing mounting pressure amid a boom in clandestine mining and deforestation across the country to meet rising demand for cement, minerals and timber. Big Bend National Park in Texas is a destination, as is Hidalgo County in New Mexico&#8217;s Bootheel. It wasn&#8217;t until last year that DNA evidence helped to add Arizona to the list. Bat Conservation International announced on Tuesday that swabbing agave plants and hummingbird feeders on the fringes of New Mexico&#8217;s Gila National Forest also turned up proof that the bats are farther north than ever before. The research shows they&#8217;re traveling about 100 miles (160 kilometers) beyond their known roosts in New Mexico. 							<![CDATA[In the early 2000s, José Juan Flores Martínez was studying for a bachelor’s degree in biology and working as a volunteer in a program designed to control invasive rodents on islands in the Gulf of California in northwestern Mexico, which are home to several seabird colonies. On one of those expeditions, his group traveled to Isla Partida Norte near the city of La Paz, where something surprised them: they heard bats. Accustomed to seeing them in caves, Flores Martínez was intrigued when he saw them coming out from between the rocks and making clicking sounds under his feet. “It surprised me to find out that they were on an island, in the middle of the desert, under extreme conditions: They can resist sub[-freezing] temperatures and heat above 50 degrees [Celsius, or about 122° Fahrenheit],” said Flores Martínez, now an academic technician at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s (UNAM) Institute of Biology. “But it was much more surprising to me that, when I began to ask questions, I was told that they feed on fish.” They were fish-eating bats (Myotis vivesi), and they fascinated Flores Martínez. 							<![CDATA[In 2018, researchers from Bat Conservation International, Cameroon&#8217;s University of Maroua and the American Museum of Natural History entered abandoned mining tunnels in Guinea’s Nimba Mountains as part of an environmental and social impact assessment for an iron ore project. They wanted to better understand the habitat and behavior of the critically endangered Lamotte’s roundleaf bat (Hipposideros lamottei) in order to mitigate the negative impacts of a proposed mining project. As they were prowling in the horizontal shafts of mines left behind in the 1970s and ’80s, they encountered a distinctive and distinctly unknown-to-science bat species. It was joy for the scientists, and potential disaster for U.S. miner Ivanhoe Atlantic (formerly HPX), which is seeking to develop an open-pit iron ore mine amid the rich biodiversity of the Nimba Mountains, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Residents of the villages around Nimba had previously reported sightings of a bat with bright orange fur here in the mountains, around 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level, but the 2018 survey was the first formal record of the bat. The scientists searching the abandoned mine shafts were able to trap, examine and release just two individuals on two occasions, one male and one female. They also recorded echolocation at a total of five adits, the access tunnels to the old mines, that matched the vocalizations of the bat they’ve formally named Myotis nimbaensis. However, this is likely the first time invasive brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) have been recorded feasting on bats in urban hibernation sites of continental Europe, the researchers say in a recent study. “Because bats in Central Europe are increasingly threatened by human activities such as urbanization, light pollution, and road construction, it is becoming harder for them to reach their winter hibernation sites,” Florian Gloza-Rausch, study co-author and bat researcher at the Museum of Natural History Berlin, told Mongabay by email. “If an additional stress factor — predation by invasive species — is added, populations may weaken and decline further.” The brown rat, believed to be native to parts of Asia, colonized Central Europe in the 18th century and has since become pervasive in the region’s cities and towns. In northern Germany, the researchers observed rats preying on native bats at two sites: Segeberger Kalkberg, a cave in the town of Bad Segeberg, and Lüneburger Kalkberg, a rocky hill with crevices in the city of Lüneburg. 							<![CDATA[Furry, feisty, and often on the wing, bats are tricky to observe, let alone to protect. Some species hibernate deep in caves or tree cavities for months at a time; many migrate long distances in search of food, shelter and potential mates. Their diversity of lifestyles often makes it difficult to include all bats within conservation plans. Designing and locating protected areas with bats in mind is a particular challenge. Numerous studies have found the small winged mammals are frequently overlooked in conservation areas across many biodiverse parts of the world, such as Africa, Brazil, and now, Vietnam. Only about 6% of the land where bats are found in Vietnam is included within its existing protected area network, according to a new study published in PLOS ONE. Nearly one-third of all bat species known from Asia are found across Vietnam’s remaining tropical forests, mountain valleys and cavernous limestone karst formations, where they face a slew of threats, with many species in decline. The study, by a team of biologists from Vietnam, Hungary and Taiwan, used spatial distribution models to analyze to what extent Vietnam’s protected areas encompass the range of 81 species of bats, including insect eaters, fruit eaters, and eight globally threatened species. They found the range of 78 species falls largely outside of the country’s protected areas, with threatened species particularly poorly represented. All the specimens were collected from either primary or secondary forests, currently threatened by mining and shifting agriculture, the authors write in a new study. “These bats are notoriously elusive, so the tube-nosed bat collection this study examined was cobbled together over many years, expeditions, and memorable experiences — one bat at a time,” Jodi Sedlock, study co-author from Lawrence University, U.S., said in a statement. For the study, the researchers examined the bodies and genetics of museum specimens of tube-nosed bats collected from various Philippine islands over the past couple of decades. Their analysis found six species previously unknown to science. All the bats are insect-eating and weigh just 4-14 grams (0.1-0.5 ounces). Alvarez’s tube-nosed bat (Murina alvarezi): Found in the southern and central Philippines, this bat has been recorded from a diverse range of forests on the islands of Mindanao, Siquijor, Bohol, Cebu and Sibuyan. The species is named in honor of James Alvarez, a young Filipino bat biologist who died in 2018. Balete’s tube-nosed bat (Murina baletei): This bat was recorded in primary and second-growth forests of Lubang, southern Luzon and Catanduanes islands. It’s named in honor of Danilo S. The newly described bat is a species of pipistrelle, a group of tiny insect-eating bats, and scientists have named it Pipistrellus etula, with etula meaning “island” or “nation” in the language of the Bubi people of Bioko Island. “The recognition of P. etula as the 1,500th bat species is not only a symbolic scientific milestone but also carries deep conservation significance,” lead author Laura Torrent, a Ph.D. candidate at the Natural Sciences Museum of Granollers, Spain, told Mongabay by email. “It reminds us how much biodiversity remains undocumented, particularly in under-surveyed regions like Central Africa.” The story of P. etula goes back to 1989, when bat researcher Javier Juste first captured a few individuals of the bat from the montane forest on the slopes of Biao Peak, a volcano on Bioko. At the time, Juste suspected it was an undescribed species, but confirmation would take decades. During a 2024 expedition, Torrent and her colleagues captured more individuals of what looked like the same bat at Basilé Peak, another volcano on Bioko. 							<![CDATA[In the rainforest, much of life dwells in the tree canopy. But getting up there to study it isn&#8217;t easy. By the time a human has clumsily lumbered up from the ground, most of the critters have scattered. So a team of researchers had an idea: Why not collect the rainwater that trickles down through the trees and analyze the water for traces of DNA? Every living thing, from the tiniest moss to the largest monkey, sheds microscopic pieces of itself. Cells slough off. Saliva droplets land on leaves. Waste products get deposited on branches. When rain falls through the forest canopy, it washes all this biological debris downward, creating what scientists call rainwash, a carrier of environmental DNA, or eDNA. To gather the rainwash, researchers repurposed ordinary umbrellas, drilling holes and attaching tubes to funnel water into collection devices, and hung them under trees in the Amazonian forests of French Guiana. Named the Himalayan long-tailed myotis (Myotis himalaicus) in a new study, the bat boasts a tail nearly as long as its body. Rohit Chakravarty, a bat researcher and conservationist with the nonprofit Nature Conservation Foundation, told Mongabay he first caught individuals of this bat in Uttarakhand during fieldwork for his Ph.D. in 2016 and 2017. He collected blood samples for DNA analysis before releasing the bats. While the individuals did seem a bit different from other bats Chakravarty had seen, he didn’t suspect at the time that they were an undescribed species, he told contributor Nikhil Sreekandan for Mongabay India. The subsequent DNA analysis showed that these bats had considerable genetic differences from other similar Myotis species. But the team couldn&#8217;t describe it as a new-to-science species based on genetics alone. For confirmation, they needed to study the morphology and anatomy of an entire individual in detail. Five years later, in 2021, Chakravarty said he finally managed to catch an individual for the analysis, and “put all the pieces of the puzzle together.” By then, Chakravarty had handled numerous Myotis species, and he could tell the individual he’d caught was different: it had a distinctive bare patch around the eye and weighed about 7 grams (0.25 ounces), some 2-3 grams (0.07-0.1 oz) heavier than the other similar Myotis species in the area. Pollinators receive more attention because of their known importance for food production and the economy. But roughly half of all plants, including 90% of trees in tropical rainforests, are dependent on seed-dispersing animals for their propagation. When frugivorous, or fruit-eating, animals consume seeds, their digestion process prepares the seed to receive water and germinate once they’re deposited, making such animals “unknown heroes,” the press release notes. “Seeds consumed by animals will germinate more, faster, and will establish themselves in safer places to grow,” Galetti said. Some plants rely on a single species for seed dispersal, as in the case of the Brazil nut and the agouti, an Amazonian rodent. “If the agouti becomes extinct locally, the Brazil nut’s seed dispersal service will succumb,” Galetti said. Birds, bats, monkeys and tapirs are the most common types of seed dispersers, but there are some more surprising animals involved. The conventional thinking has been that protected areas offer a safe haven for many animal species, including bats. However, a recent study suggests that bats have been largely overlooked in monitoring and conservation programs conducted in protected areas and may be quietly declining as a result. &#8220;Protected areas (PAs) are a critical conservation tool; however, their effectiveness in safeguarding many taxa, such as bats, remains unclear,&#8221; the authors wrote. This study set out to assess how well protected areas actually protect bats and highlight the areas where conservation efforts need to be improved. So, researchers assessed the distribution of bats in protected areas across sub-Saharan Africa to identify areas where bats are underrepresented in monitoring efforts and where conservation and survey work is most needed. “We used georeferenced occurrence records and species distribution models for 263 bat species in 7,875 terrestrial protected areas in sub-Saharan Africa,” Cecilia Montauban, a co-author of the article, told Mongabay via email. They found 89% of bat species were recorded in at least one protected area but 28 species, including five threatened and 15 data-deficient species, were absent from all the protected areas. The analysis also revealed high species richness of bats in certain understudied areas in West Africa, Central Africa and the Albertine Rift. Also shortlisted for the category was an episode from Mongabay Explores, a podcast hosted by Mongabay’s Mike DiGirolamo. Wild Frequencies, reported and co-hosted by Mongabay India&#8217;s Kartik Chandramouli and Mongabay&#8217;s Shreya Dasgupta, with sound design and original music by Abhijit Shylanath, was additionally shortlisted in the award’s “Best Limited Series” category. 							<![CDATA[KIGALI, Rwanda ― Following the recent rediscovery of the critically endangered Hill’s horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hilli) at Nyungwe National Park in southwestern Rwanda, researchers are calling for actions and policies aimed at their conservation. Scientists say that this is the first sighting and documentation of the horseshoe bat Rhinolophus webalaiin the park and Rwanda’s first observation of the Damara woolly bat (Kerivoula argentata) since it was last observed in 1981. According to Paul Webala, a senior lecturer in wildlife biology at the department of forestry and wildlife management at Kenya’s Maasai Mara University, scientists consider bats the second-most diverse group of mammals after rodents. In countries like Rwanda, he says, where most of the natural forests and savannah habitats have been lost, altered or degraded, bats may comprise “at least 40% of the overall mammal diversity.” According to a 2022 study that Webala co-authored, insectivorous bats in Rwanda provide critical ecosystem services and also act as pest controllers in agricultural areas. But experts in India have come up with a potential solution to make long-duration bat research easier: they’ve devised an automated, solar-powered instrument called BatEchoMon that continuously listens for bat calls in the surrounding landscape, and relays the data back to researchers in near-real time, reports contributor Aisiri Amin for Mongabay India. Bat biologist Kadambari Deshpande and technologist Vedant Barje, who developed BatEchoMon last October, have installed two of the devices on private farms in the western state of Maharashtra. Their goal is to monitor insectivorous bats and understand the role they play in agro-systems. “For instance, insectivorous bats control agricultural insect pests of several crops, and thus contribute to the protection of yields from pest-driven losses,” Deshpande told Mongabay India. To study insectivorous bats, researchers generally rely on handheld devices called bat detectors. Whenever a bat flies by, the detector’s microphone picks up the high-frequency sounds the mammals use to navigate and find food. The device then displays the calls as graphs on the detector’s screen, with each bat species having a unique call signature. But there are a few challenges: there isn’t yet a comprehensive reference resource for Indian bats’ calls as many species remain unrecorded, and sorting out bat calls from background noise, as well as analyzing the data, can be a long-drawn-out process, Amin reports. But researchers have now found that he isn’t alone after all: they’ve confirmed two individuals of the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis) hibernating in the U.K. Bat experts from the Sussex Bat Group, Bat Conservation and Research Unit (BatCRU) and Vincent Wildlife Trust announced on Jan. 23 that they’d found a healthy 28-gram (1-ounce) adult female individual hibernating in South Downs National Park. BatCRU founder Daniel Whitby, who was among those who caught the bat and attached a ring on it for future identification and monitoring, said they were able to identify the female as a greater mouse-eared bat due to its especially large size, among other features. “It’s bigger than any other UK species,” he told Mongabay by email. Nick Gray of the Sussex Bat Group told Mongabay by email that they were “excited to discover that this was a breeding female, which has the potential to stay in the area to give birth and to attract other males of the same species.” The greater mouse-eared bat was initially declared extinct in the U.K. in 1992, until the lone hibernating male was discovered in 2002. 							<![CDATA[Attracting seed-dispersing bats to degraded landscapes and aiding in tropical forest restoration efforts has long been an alluring prospect for conservationists: potentially a cheaper, less labor-intensive technique than media-hyped plantings of millions of trees. Researchers have experimented with a variety of seed disperser lures for decades, but a recent project in Costa Rica may show an efficient, less costly way forward. Researchers successfully utilized synthetic chemical compounds derived from the fruit of Piper plants to attract wild fruit-eating bats. “To locate fruits in the dark, bats rely on their sense of smell. In our study, we used synthetic volatile molecules that mimic the scents of fruits preferred by fruit bats to attract them,” Mariana Gelambi, study lead author and Virginia Tech postdoctoral researcher, writes in an email. The research team placed these synthetic bat lures at sites within the La Selva Biological Research Station. They then observed fruit-eating bats from the genus Carollia drawn to the scent and also noted a slight increase in the quantity of seeds dispersed. This work builds on past research that tested the potential of essential oils collected from tropical fruits to attract seed dispersers. The chemical scents used in the Costa Rica experiment could cut the costs of extracting essential oils from fruit, making this new approach a possible candidate for large-scale future use, Gelambi says. Now, in a new study, researchers have mapped the odyssey of common noctule bats (Nyctalus noctula) using innovative tiny trackers. And the results have surprised them: the trackers reveal that the noctule travels far across Europe by “surfing” warm winds that precede storms. What the study says: For long, bat migration has been “poorly understood” because researchers lacked the tools to follow multiple bats over long periods of time, Edward Hurme, the study’s lead author from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPI-AB) in Germany, said in a video statement. To address this, Hurme and his colleagues designed specialized tags that weigh just over a gram each that can be attached to bats. The tags use what’s called the Internet of Things technology, relying on a large wireless network of devices connected to the internet that communicate with each other. The team tracked the movements of 71 female common noctules they tagged in Switzerland over the course of three years. The common noctule is a widespread insectivorous and migratory bat species in Europe. The researchers chose to tag female bats as they were more migratory than males. The study revealed that the bats traveled up to 1,116 kilometers (693 miles) across Central Europe, moving hundreds of kilometers in a single night. 							<![CDATA[DHAKA — Scientists have published the first record of the great Himalayan leaf-nosed bat in Bangladesh, dropping another pin on this wide-ranging species’ distribution map across Asia and highlighting the importance of continued biodiversity surveys in Bangladesh. The species, Hipposideros armiger, was found in a cave in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh during field surveys between July and December 2023, according to a newly published study. “We were thrilled to confirm this species in Bangladesh,” said lead researcher M. 							<![CDATA[Bats play a key role in maintaining the health of forest ecosystems as pollinators, seed dispersers and insect pest controllers. But according to new research, bats and the ecosystem services they offer are under threat in Brazil’s heavily fragmented Atlantic Forest biome, where natural lands have been largely converted for agriculture and mining, degradation that is increasing wildlife exposure to toxic heavy metals. Scientists at Brazil’s Santa Cruz State University plucked hair samples from bats in the state of Bahia across a patchwork of landscapes — including cattle pasture, eucalyptus and coffee monocultures and cacao agroforest — then tested them for three metals: lead, manganese and copper. “We found that bats living in areas where the landscape is dominated by intensive agriculture or grasslands have higher levels of toxic metals, particularly lead and manganese,” says Julián Barillaro, the study leader and a conservation ecology researcher at Santa Cruz State University. This, he says, is likely due to use of agrochemicals and leaded fuel. Reduced natural habitat also likely increased exposure. Other factors, such as bat species and sex, didn’t affect bioaccumulation, leading the authors to believe that the bats came into direct contact with these heavy metals by resting on contaminated leaves or trees and then grooming. The exposure levels within different monocultures requires further study, Barrilaro says, as some bat species are highly mobile and could be moving from crop to crop.
