The North Atlantic can look empty until someone begins paying attention. A stretch of gray water off Newfoundland may hold only a few white specks at first glance. Through binoculars those specks become murres riding the swell, puffins carrying fish crosswise in their bills, or fulmars riding the wind above the waves. To Bill Montevecchi, these birds were never simply inhabitants of the ocean. They were observers of it. Their breeding success, feeding trips, and unexplained absences offered evidence about fish stocks, changing currents, pollution, and the state of an ecosystem that people could not otherwise see.
For more than five decades, William A. “Bill” Montevecchi, who died on July 11th, aged 80, treated seabirds as the ocean’s most reliable witnesses. His work helped establish them as indicators of environmental change long before the idea became commonplace. At the same time, he became one of Canada’s best-known public interpreters of marine science, moving comfortably between academic journals, government advisory panels, newspaper columns, and radio interviews. He approached each with much the same purpose: to understand what the birds were saying and to explain why others should listen.

Born in New York, he developed an interest in birds at an early age and trained as an ornithologist before moving to Newfoundland, where he spent most of his career at Memorial University. Newfoundland offered what he sought: immense seabird colonies, productive seas, and unanswered questions. It also placed him close to fishing communities whose observations often complemented formal scientific studies. He worked closely with fishers, hunters, and local residents alongside oceanographers, psychologists, and ecologists.
His research covered subjects that ranged from puffin foraging behavior to contaminants, offshore oil development, fisheries, plastics, and climate-driven changes in the northwest Atlantic. The common thread was that birds integrated information from across the marine environment. A kittiwake returning late to its nest or a murre feeding chicks different prey could reveal changes unfolding many miles offshore. Rather than treating seabirds as isolated objects of study, Montevecchi regarded them as participants in a much larger ecological system.
That perspective proved especially valuable during periods of rapid change. The collapse of the northern cod fishery, shifts in capelin abundance, expanding offshore petroleum development, and warming ocean temperatures all altered conditions in Newfoundland waters. Montevecchi and his collaborators showed that seabird behavior frequently reflected these changes before conventional surveys could fully describe them. Their work informed fisheries management, oil-spill preparedness, marine conservation, and environmental assessment.

Fieldwork remained central to his life. Many of the places where he worked required boat journeys, exposed landings, and long climbs to breeding colonies. Funk Island, once home to the extinct great auk and still one of North America’s largest seabird colonies, became one of the landscapes most closely associated with his research. There he counted nests, monitored breeding success, and watched the daily rhythms of birds that many people would never see outside photographs. Scientific papers emerged from these expeditions, though so did stories, observations, and friendships.
Students found a supervisor who expected careful thinking but encouraged independence. Colleagues frequently remarked on his willingness to explore unfamiliar ideas and adopt new technologies when they could improve understanding of seabird ecology. He collaborated widely across disciplines, reflecting a conviction that marine ecosystems did not divide themselves according to university departments. When the Pacific Seabird Group presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, the citation emphasized his curiosity, generosity as a mentor, and unusual ability to connect basic science with practical conservation.
Montevecchi himself described his motivations with less ceremony. In one of his final newspaper columns, part of a long-running series called Birds I View, he reflected on the difference between basic and applied science. Understanding “the nature of things,” he wrote, was often the more enjoyable pursuit. Yet environmental problems demanded attention, and scientists had a responsibility to communicate their findings beyond academic audiences. He acknowledged that writing about pollution, conservation, and policy was less satisfying than studying bird behavior for its own sake. He did it because the evidence mattered.
That belief shaped his public life. He wrote regularly for Newfoundland newspapers, gave interviews to radio and television, and commented on subjects ranging from offshore oil and seabird mortality to wind turbines and species-at-risk legislation. His tone remained measured. He returned to data, observation, and the limits of what was actually known. He argued that environmental debates improved when claims were tested against evidence rather than assumption. Quoting Noam Chomsky in one column, he suggested that intellectuals had an obligation to question accepted beliefs, including their own.

Friends and colleagues often noticed the phrase at the end of his emails: “Keep looking up.” It worked as practical advice for anyone interested in birds, though it also captured something of his outlook. Curiosity was an activity rather than a disposition. New questions appeared wherever someone was prepared to notice them.
Near the end of his career, Montevecchi continued writing about seabirds with the same attention that had first drawn him into the field. The colonies still reflected changes in fish populations, weather, and the chemistry of the sea. They also continued rewarding careful observation. For him, the birds remained what they had always been: reliable witnesses to an ocean that revealed itself only gradually, to those willing to watch closely.
