Forest loss is on the rise in Borneo, according to data from a team of researchers led Matt Hansen of the University of Maryland. The study, published last November in the journal Science, now underpins Global Forest Watch, a worldwide forest mapping platform.

In contrast to the new PLOS ONE study led by David Gaveau and Erik Meijaard, data from Global Forest Watch is updated monthly with coarse MODIS data and annually with higher resolution Landsat data. But Global Forest Watch goes back only to 2000/2001 and, outside of Indonesia, doesn’t distinguish between intact forests, logged forests, and plantations.
