Smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) are found from India to Sumatra. They are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List due to destruction of wetlands for hydropower, agriculture, and other development. Widespread pollution and a decline in prey pose other problems for the otters. In some places smooth-coated otters are actively killed as they are seen as competitors for fish and pests to aquaculture projects.
