Issues of the Day: 100 Commentaries on Climate, Energy, the Environment, Transportation, and Public Health Policy: Book Review

Issues of the Day: 100 Commentaries on Climate, Energy, the Environment, Transportation, and Public Health Policy is a wonderful overview of 100 different issues presented in two-page briefs by teams of expert individuals. With 100 articles on Global Environmental Challenges, Energy Policies, National Environmental Policies, Managing Natural Resources, Transportation and Urban Policies, Public Health Policies, and Environment and Development, this collection is an excellent compendium of a wide range of systematic issues currently faced by our business, policy and NGO leaders. Articles are focused both on global and local U.S. issues written and presented with careful economic analysis.

For example, Professor Kenneth R. Richard’s article titled “Forests in a U.S. Climate Program” provides results based approach analyzing forest carbon sequestration breakeven costs for the U.S. market under a cap-and-trade program. His article also includes a reference list for future reading. It is through this approach of presenting short two-page articles that interested parties can quickly reference an idea along some reference material.

James Boyd’s article on Environmental Accounts describes the immediate necessity to develop environmental indices similar to gross domestic product (GDP) indices. For example as GDP increases as a result of increases in production and consumption, natural capital decreases. What if instead, GDP environmental indices measured environmental sustainability efficiency where GDP would be valued as a measure of efficiency rather than consumption. This is an example of the conversation of the typical two-page briefing note within Issues of the Day: 100 Commentaries on Climate, Energy, the Environment, Transportation, and Public Health Policy.

I highly recommend this book as a resource for business, policy and NGO leaders. It is available to download for free here. Issues of the Day: 100 Commentaries on Climate, Energy, the Environment, Transportation, and Public Health Policy is a great resource that is available to you.
