The world’s only sloth sanctuary works to save orphaned and injured sloths in Costa Rica. A recent short film (below) by Lucy Cooke highlights a few of the stars of the sloth sanctuary. Cooke has a new hour long film debuting on Animal Planet on December 17th at 8 PM EST, following the adventures of a number of these sloths.
There are only six species of sloth in the world, all found in Central and South America. These unique animals spend almost their entire lives in rainforest canopies eating plants. The brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) are the species found in Costa Rica, neither of which are endangered. However, two sloths face extinction. The maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus) is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, while the pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus) is classified as Critically Endangered.
