The tsunami warning following a 7.3 earthquake off the island in Sumatra, Indonesia has been lifted according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The U.S. Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) said the quake was centered 300 km northwest of Bengkulu and around 160 km southwest of Padang at a depth of 35 km.

A 6.7 aftershock was recorded several hours later according to U.S.G.S.

The same area was hit by an 8.4 quake in September last year. That tremor killed more than two dozen people and destroyed thousands of homes. The December 26, 2004 earthquake that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 230,000 was also centered off Sumatra.
