Mongabay.com, a leading environmental science web site, was awarded as this week’s Cingular Spotlight community hero.by San Francisco-based radio station Energy 92.7 FM. The $500 cash prize was donated to the Amazon Conservation Team, a group doing pioneering work in protecting the Amazon rainforest.

“It’s an honor to win this award,” said site founder Rhett A. Butler. “I’m very pleased that the Amazon Conservation Team can benefit. The organization is doing some ground-breaking work helping indigenous people in the Amazon protect their land and culture using a combination of cutting-edge technology and traditional knowledge of the fore set.”

“[Rhett] has an unwavering commitment to environmental issues and is a devoted defender of the rainforest and other fragile ecosystems,” stated the award. “Rhett has made an impact locally and continues to demand a more beautiful world.”

Mongabay.com, which was founded in 2000, aims to raise interest and awareness in wildlands and wildlife through an educational web site. Mongabay.com also offers a kids-targeted version of its rainforest education site in more than a dozen languages.

“I hope to eventually have the kids site available in more than 25 languages,” said Butler.

With more than half a million monthly unique visitors mongabay.com is one of the world’s most popular environmental web sites. Its sister site, wildmadagascar.org, is among the most popular sites about the island nation of Madagascar, one of the planet’s biodiversity hotspots.

Mongabay.com also offers tens of thousands of wildlife and nature photos for use in student presentations and projects.
