Photo & Video: Lion cub tripletsmongabay.comApril 30, 2010 The cubs, born January 27, 2010 to mother Sukari and father M’wasi, will be on exhibit the zoo’s African Plains habitat, from 10am to 1pm daily. The triplet African lions are the second litter born at WCS’s Bronx Zoo in a year. The cubs were born at about five pounds each and now weigh about 25 pounds. African lion populations have dropped sharply since the early 1900s due to destruction of habitat, loss of prey, and relentless hunting. In 2006 the IUCN estimated 29,000 lions remain, down from more than 100,000 a century ago. Lions are increasinly scarce outside protected areas.
