Possible questions for ATBC scientists
August 31, 2007

To promote the 2008 ATBC meeting in Suriname, Dr. Pierre-Michel Forget and Rhett A. Butler (mongabay.com) have proposed a series of interviews with ATBC scientists. The interviews would appear on mongabay.com, a popular environmental science web site with a special focus on tropical ecosystems. To see examples of previous interviews on the site, please visit All interviews or Rainforest interviews

POTENTIAL QUESTIONS

In the interest of making the process as simple as possible, below are a list of potential questions.

These questions are fairly generic but can be answered very specifically. Responders should feel free to answer just a selection of questions or add their own questions. There is no limit -- responders can write as much as they like, though style-wise it is best if responses are not overly technical.

I like to illustrate interviews with photos so it would be helpful if responders could make some photos of themselves and/or their work available. If desired I can provide links to CVs, web pages, and projects as well.
  1. What is the focus of your research?
  2. How did you become interested in [your area of focus]?
  3. What is your background [your area of focus]?
  4. How is [your area of focus] tied in with conservation? [may be covered in previous question or may be so obvious as there is no need to answer]
  5. What are the biggest threats to the ecosystem/species of focus?
  6. What is your long-term outlook for the ecosystem/species of focus? [may be covered in previous question ]
  7. Do you expect climate change to impact the ecosystem/species? [may not be relevant]
  8. What's the best way to protect tropical ecosystems/conserve biodiversity?
  9. What can the general public do to help?
  10. Do you have any advice for aspiring conservation scientists (students)?
  11. What's the best way to motivate young students to become interested in conservation science?
  12. What is you favorite place in the tropics? [very optional]
If you need more information or would like to discuss more personal/specific questions, please contact Rhett Butler.

Interviews and accompanying pictures can also be sent to Rhett, who will confirm receipt. Interviews will be prepared in web format and cleared with the interviewee prior to posting.
