4.2 earthquake hits San Francisco Bay Area

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area around 8:40 p.m. Thursday evening. The quake's epicenter was located about a mile from Lafayette, California, or about 20 miles from San Francisco.
The earthquake began with a sharp jolt, then petered out.
There were no immediate reports of damages.
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake is considered a "light" quake. More than 6,000 occur on an annual basis according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
To date in 2007, there have been four fatalities caused by earthquakes worldwide. In 2006 more than 6,500 were killed in quakes, mostly in Indonesia.
